There must be something about us 90s kids who just love the cheesiness of this game.
I adore this game! It is so fun and nostalgic, and the story is actually pretty unique despite the now-overused 'young couple buys haunted mansion' trope. The puzzles are fairly intuitive so there isn't as much frustration as some of the other adventure games of the time. It is very easy to miss (lots of) scenes because the game doesn't force you to see them all to progress, so for me it has plenty of replayability, even beyond the fact it is basically an interactive movie. There are some silly easter eggs too! [SPOILER] I do wish the first chapter was longer so the one character's descent into madness would be more impactful.
I really like the puzzle aspect of all of Roberta Williams games, however I am used to her KQ games so this was a surprise when I started playing it. The dark aspect it brings to the classic search and discover model is a refreshing change. The game can be a little frustrating at times which is expected from a Roberta game but once you know what to do it becomes quite enjoyable. May require a little patience on the players part but it is a very good game.
Ahh, the start of all my love for Horror Games. I've played through this game so many times when I was younger. Had to find all the ways the wives died, lol. Great point and click.
awesome game from the 1990s , still frighten me so ,great plot
Classic game, one of my favorites!
The game glitched on the final chapter and then wiped my save >:(
Played this with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed the overwhelming cheesyness and lowbudget writing. My parents played it when they were dating back in the 90's and now I did the same thing, felt good. If you like FMVs or mistery games you'll probably enjoy it, but make sure to be patient, the UI is dated and clunky, can get on your nerves sometimes.
It looks like a decent FMV cheesy horror game, but this POS crashes constantly. I really can't be bothered to look into how to fix the issues just because I wasn't terribly interested in this game and bought on a whim. I originally bought it to see the gore , but I ended up just watching a YouTube supercut. If you are buying this game for the same reason as me, I suggest you just watch a video. Cool concepts based on the little that I saw, but the game just doesn't function. Worthless crap.
You will need to mess with DOS Box configuration by finding the config file down in where Steam barfs this game into, because it comes with some bigbrain fullscreen settings by default that will probably make your machine spaz out and rearrange your open programs all over the place across 3 monitors.
It's better to just do windowed with like 3x scale at this point.
Other than that, it's literally as it was in 1995, and it's still great to this day. It's proof Sierra made timeless classics. there is nothing to this game. You click stuff. You click stuff to look at stuff so you can maybe click the stuff and find more stuff to click. It is a mix of "Hidden item" style gaming, and point and click puzzle solving.
It's still just as exciting now when you find a thing you think you can use somewhere else, and go clicking back over to it to progress further. Worth the play.
I made this mistake of buying this without reading it, thinking it was some remastered something or other like the 7th Guest. I could've just popped my CDs in and played the game the same way, so that's on me. Be warned. Your 6$ are at stake.
THE GRAPHICS LOOK SO REAL.
By the way, if you're not into gore, might want to turn the parental control thing on, because some of the scenes are pretty vivid and exciting.

While I completely understand the appeal to this game and why someone would like it, this game is just not for me. Right off the bat, the playstyle is not my thing. It is a very click and watch kind of game without any real puzzle-based mechanics or deep problem solving. Even though this playstyle is not my thing, a game that I enjoy still could’ve been made (see my review for the sequel). However, while the game certainly has positive qualities, the overall package completely falls flat for me.
Pros: Entertaining acting, a decent story, and good atmosphere.
Cons: Bad story pacing, lack of a single puzzle outside of basic item interaction, useless animations that waste your time, and timer based decisions that confused me and left me to watch forced cutscenes multiple times when failed.
The game is good and has some old school 96' atmosphere to it, but chapter 7 is glitching/crashing the game and it deletes your save game making it a real nightmare to beat the game. I need to find a video of what to do as I'm seemingly stuck in endless loop of crashes and end game screens.
Roberta Williams of King's Quest fame produced a gothic horror inspired adventure that captivated my imagination. A married couple searches to find the chilling secret hidden beneath a newly acquired haunted mansion that has a sordid history. The dialogue's pacing can drag on a bit. Moving from plot point to plot point can take some time. But Phantasmagoria's premise is solid, and produces a story that holds the players attention. Rated 7 out of 10.
Good old game. Mid acting but fun. 6/10
Hawktasmatuah
too quick, too easy. lots of cinematics. novelty for its time but dated big time
