Unreal Engine Rewrite
Greetings! I'm pleased to announce that Emergence has been rewritten in Unreal Engine 4.25 and now supports Valve Index and Oculus. Rewriting the application in Unreal engine took considerable effort, but I feel that it was well worth the performance boost. If you're operating without a VR headset, check the community page for a guide on how to bring up the Desktop Overlay interface. Kind Regards, ~W

Incredibly cool but hard to recommend for purchase to anyone that enjoys seeing games reach an actual 1.0 release. This game is deader than disco but if there was a neutral option, I'd use it since the price of admission is pretty decent considering what you're getting. Just sad that there seems not to have been any updates since its release 2 years ago but it's still worth $9.99 to someone out there in its current state.
edit: dev reached out re: my review and it was very helpful and kind and explanatory, so I'll flip this to positive and wait for the next update. Seriously, this game is great.
So stoked i stumbled upon this. Fractal Alchemist is still the better option for creative types who want to create their own fractal worlds from scratch, but as far as real-time exploration is concerned, Emergence is king. When set to an ideal render distance and number of iterations, the performance is Godly smooth and you can make and watch huge fractal transformations emerge at max stable frame rate. This one is an out of body experience that no VR user should pass up..
Didn't know I needed this. I've been interested in fractals for a long time, especially Mandelbrot. Seeing it all in VR is another level. Highly recommended - great variety of options in the infinite universes to explore and then also playing with colors and light/darkness. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS
The game looks and seems incredible, judging by reviews and images. But I can't even get the game to start without crashing :( I guess i'll patiently wait for an update that fixes this bug.
This experience in VR is breath taking, and intense. Very beautiful, and very.. surreal. The great soundtrack adds a lot to the experience. One of my favourite VR experiences.
This took me by surprise. I bought it kind of figuring I would most likely be disappointed, but I wanted to give it a shot. But I found this to really be beautiful and interesting. There's a lot of potential here for creative and expressive and incredibly beautiful visualization. There's a lot of room for feature growth, and I hope the developer has the interest and funds to pursue that. But as is, it already is a powerful app that yields some breathtaking VR visuals/visualizations.
I bought this on a small sale for $8.29. Obviously it's not the kind of thing every person would love, but if it piques your interest, I absolutely feel comfortable recommending it at full price ($9.99).
It seems that the dev is working on it further at the moment, but as it stands now, you can morph the fractals in a variety of high impact ways, change the colour/brightness, move around the scene... there's a lot of expressiveness in the fractals that you can discover and create as you play around with it. There's also a really nice variety of fractals to 'play with'.
Also to be clear, I have no idea what a fractal even is xD so if you're thinking "I'm interested in beautiful VR visuals/visualizations, but this sounds confusing to me and I don't know what a fractal is", don't worry, this is still for you! You just play around with altering parameters by moving the analog sticks (I'm on Oculus Rift S), and see things morph around you.
While I personally believe its very important to be supporting developers who try things new in VR, I don't believe this project is ready to be sold as a product on the steam market. The ease of usability is practically non-existant. The scale function scales the fractal from its object position, not the player position, making it extremely difficult to explore the fractal. There is only one movement control, and thats forward, so if you are interested in this game because you want to navigate and explore the detailed fractals in VR, you probably wont be able to properly do that until the developer improves this game.
Also, it really needs antialiasing, as there is flickering everywhere, and there is a black box around the field of view, so you aren't even getting a real VR experience.
This has so much potential. It really will be an incredible experience once the performance issues are worked out. If you have a gtx 970 you will not get a smooth frame rate. I'm looking forward to the new update which supposedly improves the performance. If it ran smooth I could see myself getting lost in here for hours on a regular basis. Keep up the good work! Don't let this one die!
Pretty impressive. Was basically blown away since I have never seen anything like this before. Love the fact that you can see in colour and the scaling ability adds a new dimension. There I was floating through the fractals examining the detail close up. Amazing. Have only used it for 30 minutes so probably have lots to discover yet. Felt like I was astral traveling in another dimension. The fact that you can experience something like this in immersive 3D with the Vive is truly amazing and something which was impossible not so long ago. One can only wonder how far this can be taken. I'm sure I will be surprised and blown away even more as this software matures.
very cool, nice music, interesting fractals
you can adjust the fractals shape and size, volume and color...
very trippy!
hope the dev adds more options (color filter, color filter responding to the music)
an option to always have a free space in front of the head where nothing is rendered would be nice too, so you dont even up with your head stuck inside the fractal and get lost.
A world of Fractals I could very well imagine used to create wonderful new unseen alien worlds.
I could spend a long time in this universe, changing the variables and seeing how the entire landscape changes, it feels like travelling trough space in an alien world.
I enjoyed this very much. It would be nice if the "Render Region" used more of the visual space alotted by the vive, the square visual screen makes me feel like im still just looking at a screen. Cool visuals nonetheless . Oh and a little less sensitive controls would be nice, you know for those finer tuned details.
Lots of fun and very beautiful to experience. The price is on point. I wish there were more fractals and coloring / lighting options and an ability to zoom in on fine detail. With a bit more work (the ability to use custom formulas, perhaps some way of producing static 360 stereo images to allow for more detail at the expense of being able to move, with a switchable real-time preview) this would easily be worth double the price or more.
This is very cool if you own a vive and like fractals.
pro
-there is a flashlight
-cool music
con
doesn't use all of the screen
Even though the UI is tricky, and sometimes the screen flickers, I am constantly blown away by this awesome experience. Of all the VR in my library, I go back to explore this one the most...Highly recommend...
It's like the scene in Interstellar where the tesseract is collapsing, except YOU are the one inside watching it move in strange and impossible ways. A very interesting and cool concept. Depth perception is really messed up on small scales (-1
Some things I would add:
-The hand controllers should be visible
-The UI should be made easier to work with, especially scaling while moving
-Scaling should scale from your head, not your feet
-The game should use the entire field of view of the headset
Great software!
About 25 years ago, I used to render fractals using my x386. I was wishing I could fly in these abstract scenaries, listening to some trippy ambient or techno... Today, it is (almost) happening.
I haven't had time to use it much, but I already have few suggestions:
- maybe we could play our own playlist?
- would be great to have a "random" mode...
- ...and maybe a "flight" mode !
Great job, anyway!
Must-buy for the vive. It does everything i could have asked it to. This is literally THE type of thing i was hoping would come to VR.
Cool.
Needs some more options and explanation.
Perhaps some shareable "runs". ie sequences of parameter adjustments and movements in a file for playback.
It's a cool software that lets you edit the fractal world with different parameters. Might take some time getting used to the controls, but overall great if you're into this stuff. Watching a world like that in VR can be both awesome and a bit scary. Dont use if you have clostrofobia
