Kingdoms is the most content-rich expansion ever produced for a Total War game, with four new entire campaigns centered on expanded maps of the British Isles, Teutonic Northern Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. In Medieval II, you were only given a tantalizing glimpse of South America, but in Kingdoms, vast tracts of land in both North and South America have been opened up for you to conquer. All-new factions from the New World are also now fully playable, including the Aztecs, Apaches, and Mayans.
Along with the new maps in the Britannia, Teutonic, Crusades, and New World Campaigns, there are 13 new factions to play, over 110 units to control, and 50 building types, adding up to 80 hours of new gameplay. Kingdoms also offers new multiplayer maps and hotseat multiplayer, a first for the Total War series, allowing you to play one-versus-one campaign games on the same computer.

- 13 new factions
- 9 new agents

The Kingdoms expansion for Medieval 2 is pretty close to being the best DLC of the whole Total War franchise. All four of its campaigns are excellent and each feel unique to play through multiple times with different factions.
The America's campaign is great because it is fun to playthrough as both the Spanish or one of the indigenous factions. The Spanish have a core of excellent well armored units, heavy cavalry and firearms, but have to rely on huge numbers of weak indigenous allied mercenaries to actually have numbers. Factions like the Aztecs on the other hand have better indigenous warriors, but are entirely unarmored and lacking in units like cavalry to do the moral shocks that are pretty central to Medieval 2's combat system.
The Crusades campaign is a fun cavalry arms race. Medieval 2 is already a very cavalry focused game, but here all of the factions are cavalry focused. The Egyptians and Crusaders have excellent heavy cavalry and the Turks have cavalry archers. This expansion is about using small corps of elite units to the best of their ability and it works well.
The Britannia campaign has has obscene amount of faction diversity and some interesting map starts. England has alot of territory but is spread thin and at war with everybody. They make up for this with the only good heavy cavalry in the game, but can only afford so much of it and need to decide where it should be. Scotland, Norway, Wales and Ireland have better infantry supporting unique playstyles and safer more conventional start positions, but very weak cavalry. With how the map is each campaign playthrough is completely different and full of battles against lots of enemy variety.
The Teutonic campaign is basically the Crusades campaign, but in a far more unique and interesting setting. It has a denser map with more factions bordering each other so it is far more chaotic than the other campaigns. Its considered the best of the campaigns of this expansion.
This is pretty much a must have for any Total War fan.
9.5/10
I had to review this game even in 2022. I bought TW Attila just for the 1212 AD mod, just to replay this experience.
I was playing as the Aztec as the Conquistadors came crashing into the east side of my empire. I sent hoards of warriors to fight them. As they and their allies crested the ridge on the battle map, I realized might sometimes cant fight steel. No matter, the OST came to a crescendo as I sent waves after waves of soldiers, and at the moment of victory, they flanked me and routed my army with those beasts they ride.
Just a fluke? As I was rutting out the pagans with my warrior monks, when they ambushed me from the forests. I faced them on the battle map, having all but my mounted units getting slaughtered. Battle lost? No my son, I had worked diligently to turn the land +95%, Christian. Nothing can stop a fully leveled, devoted knight of the order. Just three units routed an entire army of Lithuanians. Our losses are only temporary, as we will see our brothers in heaven.
But these holy knights didn't fare so well on the walls of Damascus, as my Mamluks sallied out of the besieged castle. The OST, the units, the focused campaign. This in my opinion, is the best TW ever.
Still one of the most versatile and complete Total War Games of all time. - have 100s of hours on the non steam version.
-Awesome real time combat
-Well rounded and challenging Campaign
-Better with Mods
One of the best total war games with a great campaign and custom battles.
positives
- Sieges
- Great long campaign
- Unlockable factions
- Good custom battles for online
- A vast amount of mods
- Pretty good graphics for when it came out.
- Long battles that needs time and patience to win
negatives
- No online campaigns
- diplomacy can be boring at times
I would give the game a 8/10
One of the best expansions of any Total War series with entirely new regions, factions and gameplay. It provides new frontiers in North America, Central America, Central Europe and the Middle East during the Crusades gives a lot of new content to play with. While they aren't all perfect and balance issues in the two American campaigns are worth bringing up but the unique setting and factions makes it worth while.
Value metric: Does it have a value of $1 per hour of gameplay? Yes
If all dlc were like this one, there wouldn't be such hate.
It adds vast amount of content. Units, regions, and campaings.
I remember spending my days after school paying all the pack had to offer.
Those were the days!
This is a decent expansion. It adds four unique campaigns to the game. They are much smaller in scale to the grand campaign of course but provide further experiences to be had with this amazing game. I will admit I don't really care much for these campaigns anymore. I always preferred the grand campaign and really only used this expansion for mods.
I still recommend it though for anyone who likes this title as they may enjoy it as well.
I can assure you 1000% this will be worth your money.
1) Without this you cant play a lot of mods
2) 4 new campaigns with a lot more factions and dozens of new units
3) Makes Medieval 2 one of the most replayable games out there
The Total War game of all Total War games.
And that modding community...
So many great mods and fixes. Well, some of the fixes are very needed...
However, if you like Total War, you will love Medieval 2.
Of course there are a lot of cons, cheating (and therefore army spamming) AI is one of them, but again, there's modding, you know?
Don't let my playtime fool you, i've played this game for over a decade ever since 2006 and probably sunk thousands of hours into this game on disc. This game features a combination of RTS (while in battles) and TBS (displayed on the campaign map), you move your armies around on a fully 3D map authentic to the terrain of Europe and Asia, Risk style.
There are many troop types from Horse Archers to Knights to Longbowmen even Elephants and Native American braves! this game is a perfect example of a well crafted Total War game. Yes it is old, even on max graphics a graphics snob might brush this game off right away but this game captures the atmosphere, lifestyle, turbulance and religious strife of the Middle Ages wonderfully.
i would recommend this game if
* You are a Military History buff
* if you enjoy a bit of politics (The Pope mechanic)
* if you LOVE the Middle Ages
* If you love HUGE expansions that were made with care(back when CA knew what the term expansion meant)
* if you would like to take the lead in Braveheart sized battles
Would not recommend if you are a graphics snob
my only question is when is Medieval 3 coming out? =p
Medieval 2 was the second Total War game I've ever played and it is also my favorite Total War Game. The game is old and clunky, but it is still awesome to conquer Europe by commanding thousands of soldiers and watching them fight. After a certain amount of turns, you can get gunfpowder units and sail your armies to america which is awesome. What really makes this my favorite total war game is the modding community. There are so many amazing mods, my favorite being Third Age Total War. Overall this game is absolutely amazing.
If only they just built and updated the concept of this game instead of shifting the Total War games that they have in recent years to different styles like Attila Total War, etc. This is by far the best Total War game and includes alot of factors that the newer ones simply drowned out.
A great expansion to an already great game. Highly recommended just for the mods alone, such as Third Age (a LoTR mod), Stainless Steel, and Broken Cresent. The expansions campagins are also really good, much more focused and I'd say faster paced than the originals Grand Campaign.
Each one of the four new campaigns is unique in setting and objectives and is fun to play. This addon is also a must buy if you plan to try some custom mods since the majority of them are made for it.
Its pretty good now go and buy it!
Pros :
-Great real time battles with thousands of soldiers mixed with great turn based empire management
-Fights look cool to watch
-Mods! (If you like Lord of the Rings I recomend Third Age Total War)
-A great variety of medieval civilizations to choose from
-Seige battles!
Cons:
-Graphics are a bit out dated but that does not really matter
-A bit buggy at times (Still better than Rome 2)
Overall I would rate this game at a 9.5/10
This game is a must own for any rts fan and in my opinion the best in the Total War series!
I love the game and i have put a lot of hours into it however after the game got an update the game completly disapeared from by library and there are no files on the computer. Im really annoyed and i hope it changes
Awesome game!! Not only will you spend hours on the vanilla game, but there's also loads of mods. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, you're in luck. There's also mods that add to the vanilla game such as more settlements and units. This game is fantastic. I've only played about 60 hours, but I'd recommend this to anyone who likes strategy games. I use to play Civilization 5 all the time, but since I've bought this, Civilization 5 looks so borring now XD.
The first thing you do when you have downloaded this baby is install the Stainless Steel mod.
But the original game was awesome back when I had played it for the first time. Back when CA made good games..
THE pinnacle of Total War "genre". It is by far the most well-done and entertaining game in the whole series, with nothing that came after it coming even close to its glory.
While of course it has its cons, such as lack of multi-core support, on recent rigs it handles battles up to ten thousand men with no problem.
However, what is the best about this title, is the modding community. You will find mods for everything, even vaguely medieval related: Call of Warhammer (Warhammer Fantasy), Third Age Total War (Lord of the Rings), Stainless Steel (Medieval Europe, basically M2TW how it should've been), Westeros Total War (Game of Thrones) and many others.
If you are a medieval warfare fan, this is a must-buy.
But, as I want to be fair to everyone who might be willing to buy this game, let me list the greatest cons game has:
- Without mods, it's "just" good.
- Steam Version contains a bugged, idiotic "launcher", that makes launching mods difficult
- AI is not the brightest at times
- Steam overlay tends to crash battles
- City battles are seriously lacklustre ( they are made enjoyable only recently in Rome 2 Total War )
- Crossbowmen will not fire from walls
- Without mods, there are a few quirks the game has (cavalry charge lacking "mass", AI stupider than it has to be, etc)
OVERALL, in my humble opinion, this is _THE_ grand strategy/battle game of choice. Don't be fooled by my hour count on steam, I have owned the game since its launch, and have clocked over two thousand hours in this... which, I think, shows just how good the game is.
Old yes, boring no, Medieval II Total War is an addicting strategy game that combines turn base and real time gameplay to make one of the greatest games on the planet.
With the huge array of mods for it, it might be inpossible for anyone one to get bored.
