This film was originally experienced on 5 different projection screens in an art gallery space with custom-designed 8 channel surround sound, and has since then been re-created virtually in order to showcase the art installation experience to more people with ease. Created by artist animator Yo-Yo Lin, Ricerca is a media installation that combines the virtues of cinematic storytelling with that of installation art, an experience designed to tell compelling stories in a more intimate format.
Ricerca pushes boundaries in storytelling by creating a cinematic experience every viewer will experience and interpret differently by how they move around in space. The installation beckons viewers to physically move in and around the animated film and explore the three-dimensional soundscape in the room, giving viewers the ability to develop a highly personal relationship with the film and go on their own self-search through time.
"Ricerca VR" is itself its own unique experience- instead of being in a room with other viewers, one goes on their own meditative journey in solitude. Just as in the physical art installation, the entire experience loops over after 12 minutes, giving the viewer opportunities to ruminate over the experience many times. The narrative is structured to have no clear beginning or end, drawing from the director’s Buddhist beliefs of reincarnation and flow of karmic energy.
The sound design and musical score come together to create a directed experience in 360 space, allowing viewers to effectively follow a narrative on five screens by following certain hard sounds in different parts of the room. While there are directional sounds present to tell the viewer where to look, ambient sounds are spread throughout the room to create an immersive world for the viewer themselves to explore freely. Using Two Big Ear's 3Dception, our team effectively re-created our soundscape for Ricerca VR.
While Ricerca VR is no game, it presents an interesting idea of how art installations can live on in virtual space, changing our perception of a temporal-based medium into one that has the potential to live on in a digital afterlife. Ricerca VR asks the questions, how will virtual reality be used to archive and distribute art? Will a virtual gallery system appear as the line between art and technology continue to be blurred? How can we foster the human experience that is integral in art-viewing with a medium like virtual reality? We hope Ricerca VR is a start to answering these questions.

I wasn't entirely sold on Ricerca VR when I first booted it up, but I have to admit that it grew on me quite quickly. The binaural audio works well in drawing the user's attention to the various screens around them. As an artist, this form of storytelling was both interesting and inspiring for me to experience. I would recommend this VR experience for anyone who is invested in VR art and it's various forms of expression.
Enjoyable experience, different from other visual art experiences
Experienced on Windows Mixed Reality
This is a purely cinematic experience. This isn't really VR. You're in a VR environment sure, but it's just a sad white room with 5 big screens where you can see a 2D film play on on those 5 screens and you can sort of get immersed in the different happenings on each screen. Sometimes there will only be one screen showing, other times all 5 screen will be showing different perspectives of the story.
Whole affairs takes approximately 12 minutes (the experience does restart on its own and has an abrupt conclusion). There is good spatial audio. The drawings and animations, in my opinion, were not all that great. The story was very artistic and experimental. There is no dialogue.
This experience really wasn't my cup of tea. You may enjoy it more than I did, but I can only give it a neutral recommendation, mostly due to the low price.
Rate 5/10. Buy if you're into artsy, college-level productions.
This is one of those ones where you just lie down and watch in the middle of your play place. It does go on a bit long though, but if you're looking for a evocative, subtle, meditative experience (and you really do want to kill 15 minutes) you will enjoy this. I don't think it features any advanced positional audio technologies, but it nice to have the sound come at you from varying angles. Incidentally, I need to purchase a bean-bag chair.

We need more experimental VR experiences like this one. For a quick (yet wholly memorable) experience, pick this up for the $0.99.
I enjoyed the experience when I was standing still in the Vive. As soon as I moved though, the space acceleration kicked in, and unless I took giant pretend steps, it conflicted with my nervous system and detracted from the experience. I understand WHY this was done, but for me, it spoiled the experience.
Let me start by saying for $0.99 its worth it if you like an artsy take on VR. I am intrigued with alot of the animation style and I'd like to see more of it. I'm just not sure I like having to ambiguously turn to see what is going on. The experince could benifte from beter binaural audio and to beter direct your atention to things as they change and evolve. Overall I am glad I gave it a chance and look forward to more.
The game description pretty much tells you what you need to know. It's basically a multimedia art installation, brought into VR. If you like modern art and would happily pay admission to an art museum, then it's probably worth a buck. No need to worry about little kids ruining it for you, either. Unless you have little kids in your house. Why would you do that to yourself? I just don't understand some people. ;-)
This experience made me very dizzy very fast to the point I could not finish it. The surrounding seems to be made out of a stereo cube map, which works only if you rotate on an axe, any translations of your body will cause weird effects and dizzyness. I felt imprisoned because I had to restrain myself from moving to decrease my discomfort before finally giving up during the "show"... I will ask for a refund, because I can't experience it.
The idea is interesting though the execution needs to be rethough.
Very engaging art piece. Very good binaural soundtrack. Nice to see HMD VR used in this way.
This is a beautiful example of the potential for storytelling in VR. Not a game, more of a vr avant garde experiment.
To the devs however. I ended up having to watch this sitting down. The way the screens sort of waver around while I walk/look through them is interesting, but ended up making me sick. A sort of true 3d environment would be better, at least the option.
It is a genuine looped art demonstration that fits perfectly into a VR space (with added binaural audio).
The screens use heavily compressed video, though, and it shows in the darker scenes and the ones with lots of slower movement.
When I purchased it, it was $0.99 which I feel is perectly priced for what it is. This is a good demonstration of what VR can do outside of games.
Because the set-up is very simple there is not much that can pull you out of the immersion. Just sitting on the ground watching the screens in an art gallery somewhere else in the world.
For what it is, a virtuall art gallery installation, it is definitely worth the 1 Buck it costs.
Hope to see more of this kind of experience, in the future.
Like any new form of media (which is how I view VR), we need experiments to find out what works well and what doesn't.
Ricerca is certainly one of those. It's not profound, but I liked it and appreciated it as a noble experiment in media.
TLDR: It's cool - try it. We need more stuff like this.
Beautiful. Welcome to the most complex artistic medium. I can't wait to see what comes next!
What was this about! A cyclist having a mid life crisis would be my best guess. It surprised me in that it is all animated on five big screens, I was expecting a static art gallery display so it was a plus and engaging all the more for this, I like all the different things the Vive brings to the table, Art installations to the gamer hell yeah! Support the different and diversify and as in the words of the Pop Group "**** art let's dance!"
Well executed. Not sure I fully understood it but if you like arty stuff then join me in supporting Yo-Yolin and buy it! A nice feast for the senses :-)
I love to see content like this growing up, VR is not only meant to be game oriented. The installation itself was good, it makes you feel like you are in the museum. Great work!
A-m-a-z-i-n-g. This is really cool immersive vr art experience! You really feel like you'd be there in the room with massive displays.
Well done! More stuff like this please =)
