This visual novel has been adapted from a sound novel based on the actual historical facts of the Ako incident. In adapting the story to visual novel format, most of the main characters of the 47 Ronin have been turned into females, and parts of the core story have been polished into a lighter literary style that also incorporates fantasy elements.
The story goes something like this…
On the 14th day of the third month of Genroku 14 (1701 CE), an incident occurred involving the ruler of the Ako Domain, Lord Asano Takumi No Mikami shedding the blood of Kira Kousuke No Suke in the Corridor of the Pines in Edo Palace.
This incident that would later become known in Japan as the famous Ako incident.
Upon hearing of this incident on the same day, the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, became enraged.
It was ruled that that very same day, Lord Asano should be sentenced to seppuku, after which his lands were to be scattered and his house broken up. Meanwhile, Kira Kousuke No Suke received no no rebuke whatsoever, going against the tradition set by the first Shogun of punishing both parties in a fight.
Unable to comprehend this harsh and shocking punishment, the loyal Samurai retainers of Ako start to move to restore honour to their master by commencing a vendetta against Lord Kira.
Meanwhile, Fukami Suguha is transported from present day Japan to the Edo-period Ako domain, where he gets to know the Ako Ronin.
What will become of Suguha as he throws himself to the mercy of the cogs of history, and will he ever be able to return to his own time?

It's been 2 years since i completed this game and it still to this day manages to make me reminisce about that transcendent journey to the Edo era Japan and is the reason why I am making this review for those who felt put off from the game like I used to.
First while the plot synopsis seemed interesting, the artstyle put me off from playing this for years.
Then some time later I was struggling to find interesting translated visual novels to enjoy and so, searched for my favourite trope in VNDB tags and Chusingura was near the top of the results, just below Steins;Gate and ML Alternative.
I immediately bought it and boy what a ride it was. No regrets whatsoever even when it felt pricey for what it looked ought to be.
The artstyle i got over (and actually kinda started liking it) within hour or two. The wonky animations for fight scenes are luckily very scarce and didn't affect my opinion on this game at all.
All the small details in the game world (other than the genderswitch/play) felt so real. Like this was working world, characters had their roles to fill and lifelike prejudices against the MainChara all of that and much more felt so thought out.
I feel like that if the developers wouldn't have made this with eroge in mind, this might have been very well known staple of VN literature. It still is in my opinion, but it hides it well behind that artstyle.
i just wish they had 18+ patch because the story is the best, the new vn on this platform it just.
It's a pretty big VN with an exciting and extremely beautiful story. Although the game is free, I would have paid no matter how much it cost for it. The game itself has only the first chapter where you fall in love with Kuranosuke, but the end is a tragic one. Frankly Kuranosuke is a simple person, but he seems very complex because of how he behaves. Music, backgrounds and all characters are wonderful, relaxing and well-defined.
Nice game!@@素晴らしい##
This… wow… Okay, this takes the tale of the 47 Ronin and twists it in so many ways. You play as Suguha, who gets sent 300 years into the past. And he is sent to the Ako domain. The Ako being the Lord whose tragic dishonor is the impetus to all that follows. Well, not completely in Suguha’s case, but still… Anyway, there are five HUGE chapters, the first being free-to-play. Frankly, this took nearly a week to read through.
Through this read, you will experience the ups and downs of Suguha and the Ako Ronin. Note: four of the five chapters have Suguha falling in love with a different of the 46 Ronin (I think only one of which is male). And once the hidden conspiracy is fully revealed… well, he might have a bit of a choice on his hands as to who to end up with…
Fully recommend this title. Well worth the cost of Chapters 2-5…
Absolutely beautiful history told with cute girls, and epic fights.
It of course has fantasy mixed in, but the events of the history remain the same for the most part.
Even though this is my first visual novel, this game is very boring. The ecchi level is pretty high so if you are not into it, then dont play this game.
This story is just so well written. I am only finishing up chapter 2 now. 43 hours in, and only 2 out of 5 chapters are done. The story is very emotional and just sticks in my heart. The emotions in the writing come out very well in the voices. I only wish I knew japanese for the full affect, as a few lines are dumbed down for westernizing. I can't wait to dive into chapter 3!
One of the best Visual Novels on Steam [Period]
Ultimately, ChuSingura46+1 is a trap. At first the game appears to be all boobs and action, however, that's a trick to get you into playing an emotional and powerful story loosely based on real historical events that becomes massively addicting. In fact, besides how quickly addicting the game becomes, it's surprising how historically accurate the game is. Besides an obvious gender swap and the other fictional aspects of the story, the events and backstories of the characters provide a great and entertaining insight into the real story of the 47 Ronin who avenged their master. It does it so well, it is arguably better than any other modern English retelling (maybe even Japanese too)! So enjoyable, before I knew it, I was 30 hours in and 3 chapters completed in one weekend.
If you haven't played ChuSingura46+1 S, do it. You won't regret your time playing. The first chapter is free and will provide you with an exciting, fun, and almost completely standalone fictional retelling of the events of the 47 Ronin. However, be prepared, it's hard to resist purchasing the following chapters based on how great the game is and wanting to hear more about its wide cast of characters.
If like me, you get completely hooked playing ChuSinGura46+1 S, I promise you that you won't regret buying chapters 2+3 and 4+5. I purchased them at full price and have not regretted it for a moment. The story only continues to get better, Yasubee (the best character obvs.) gets a chapter heavily focused on her (thank goodness) and most importantly, the game stays fun and does not drag out like other longer visual novel. SO STOP READING THIS (IF YOU EVEN BOTHERED) AND PLAY CHUSINGURA46+1 NOW!
Good Game!!
I like
Best VN for me so far
First time i've found a novel that has everything i like, blood, swords, actual plot, and keeps you coming back to read more. But the only downside is everyone is a female which i over look since it's got a decent story line.
This is kind of a harsh judgement, but for my see through of just the part... I can't actually recommend anyone doing it.
There is a clear love in the game from the developers, and the idea of getting a bit more in depth with the whole legend compared to the old western movie is greatly done. The music is moving in just the right times, the sound effects are dead on about what happens.
But in the end, the whole additional aspect is too poorly executed. All ronin are female, but not the main character, who also is one of the ronin, and a guy who used to be the creator of food. But he is also a ronin...
The females are all 20 year old depictions, but are actually all well, forty with kids... Also, they have a tendency to change between "adult", to "7 year old kid" haphazardly, without any logic behind it.
And to top it off, as an european, I simply have a freakishly hard time with the whole...difficulty with saying stuff like: we have a feud, or I like you, and then suddenly, they change it to overaffectionate, since they need to "spice" up things a little more, for the game...
In the end, it is a slightly fun visual novel, which does not do it's job at getting you excited about the other 4 parts that the story is rich in any way. It takes too long to get through, and because it is a visual novel, the lack of choices makes it stop being entertaining by the first choice you can't stand behind :(
some characters on it had no voice
kawaii.........
The story was very interesting, but it was a pity that the character was a little thin and I did not think it was pretty cute.
I had some audio problems in start music too loud or too low ( music went akwardly low when characters talking).. Don't know where it diseppeared later on but futher you got into the plot the better it was. Ending made all the worth the gametime.
Even if you don't like the 1st hours of the game, give it more time since it gets better.
