This game is absurdly good, I can't believe I slept on this series for so long. You can definitely tell these were the same guys who made Company of Heroes 1 (my fav RTS of all time), but with even more love and polish. 23 hours to finish the Space Marine campaign, now for the other EIGHT factions.
probably the best dawn of war stopping point, necrons are a little bit overtuned but its not as broken as soulstorm
This gem is 19 years old - yet still unbeaten by newer Warhammers.
Compare the Steam review scores. Very few strategies have this high 95%+ score.
Hint: If you want a somewhat similar experience in 20 mins -try Stormgate
Thank me later!
Excellent strategy game with a lot of play options. You don't need to be a Warhammer fan to enjoy this game. Balance resource build with attack and defence strategies, The skirmish mode and campaign modes also give variety to allow quick games or a longer term battle for a planet. Such a good game!
This is the game where RTS's finally clicked for me.
easily one of my all time favorite RTS and 40k games generally
Yes............ but this campaign is just basically global domination. A real step down from the other 2 games but the new races are excellent.
At around 16 or 17 years of age, this game introduced me to 40K and i thought damn the Space Marines sure are cool, wish i could get more information about them. Thats where it started. Thank the Emperor we don't get those model kits here in India, that stuff would be like crack cocaine to me.
At first was felt a bit let down on how it disnt have a straight forward campaign however putting time into it, the story develops somewhat as you take over the planet.
Silent king awaits.
It's like Minecraft but Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Dark Crusade
Still the same addictive laser laden chaotic army builder that you remember. Addictive and fun.
This game gets an automatic pass because it was my introduction to 40K back in my teen years around 2008. But I'm also compelled to say that this game has by far some of the best, most memorably voice acting ever. And I am ranking it up there with the likes of Bioware games, Commander Shepard cannot hold a candle to "UHH, BOSS, WE'Z GETTIN SHOT UP." or "SHATTER THEIR SKYYYY"
I know this game is old, but it has one of the worst balancing issues I've ever seen. Absolute DOGSHIT. Whoever designed this shit should never work in gaming again. Whoever tells you to play this game is an asshole who doesn't respect your time.
I hate how I feel about this game, but I think it's not as good as the Original or especially Winter Assault. Still better than Soulstorm! I'm not that crazy.
Never cared for "board-game" designs in strategy games, I much prefer a structured campaign because they provide a variety of challenge that scales with a decent narrative. Whereas this game feels like a couple of skirmish matches, until you stubble into one special mission difficulty spike, and then the rest of the game is just cleaning up the map. With repeating skirmish matches that feel even easier because most of your base stays on the map after winning. And you'll have leveled up far past anyone else.
Most mods for this game are complete overhauls or are in Ultimate Apocalypse. But something I would've liked was a campaign mod that makes every faction take their turn at the same time. That way the skirmish matches can be more than 1V1's and have a chance to add mechanical variety. This could also apply to the Home Base Siege Maps making them a potential race between factions that spawn on different ends of these (Honestly too big) maps. Especially if there was a 30 or 60 min time limit (because of plot reasons, or something) because if they're not completed in that time, buildings from that faction can stay in certain areas of these (Honestly way too big) maps, like in the normal skirmish maps, giving them history, a story of battle you can uncover when you get your turn. Maybe use that factions voice lines if they activate one of the triggers instead of the Player.
I respect this is a lot of peoples favourite, I mean I thought it was mine if you look at my play time since I was a teenager, the Tau and Necrons are objectively cool, but playing Vanilla Dark Crusade now, I wouldn't recommend it.
My favorite RTS game (mostly from nostalgia). Do not try to mod as it is evil and somehow made every game in my library have nothing but purple textures. Would recommend modding still though cause it is funny
100% it beating the campaign with all races would do it again
An RTS mixed with the RISK boardgame. Kicks ass.
One of the best Warhammer 40K gmaes out there

This game makes my brain give me the happy chemicals.
Woke up just to see some homeless people camping on my lawn, people these days man
fucking amazing
I would recommend Playing several rounds of Skirmish mode with a race and then playing Campain/Conquest mode with said race for maximum enjoyment. it suffers from age more than anything else, but this is just my opinion.
FOR HIM! FOR TERRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
10/10, banger of a classic
Great DLC to a great game. Genre classic.
While the enemies of the emperor still draw breath there can be no peace
"A Battle for the Ages, Guided by Hidden Forces"
In Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, the universe’s factions fight for dominance, but there’s always a deeper force at play. Each battle feels like a piece of a larger, unseen puzzle—just as the Illuminati would orchestrate events from the shadows.
Strategic, intense, and full of secrets. Perfect for those who understand the true power lies in the details.
10/10. The game doesn’t just play you—it’s playing us.
This Game was my childhood and is really scratching that nostalgic RTS itch :)
Holds up even after 20 years
oldie but a goodie
Great Game... a true classic
One of the best games among all genres.
Back in the day, this was the GOAT of warhammer games and one of the best RTS in the industry. The followup Soulstorm had some nice additions, but as far as great campaigns go this is the peak of DoW1. Let me tell, you after so many years, it holds up way better than it has any right to. It still looks great and plays great.
Best campaign they said
Overall: 8.5/10
THEY SHOULD MAKE A DARK CRUSADE II, III, IV, AND SO ON. SOUL STORM IS ANOTHER GREAT GAME LIKE THIS. THESE GAMES ARE CHEAP NOW, BUT A LOT OF FUN. THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO PLAY. WELL, WORTH THE MONEY. CHECK OUT THE WHOLE FRANCHISE. OH, I GUESS STEAM DOES'T SELL THIS ANYMORE. SORRY TO HERE THAT.
This game, YEARS later, is still the best Warhammer 40k video game ever made. An absolute gem. I'm not sure there's a better RTS that's ever been made either. Yes, Starcraft was bigger and sold more copies, but this is just as balanced, and with 7 races, compared to Starcraft's 3. Absolutely amazing game.
Classic Warhammer40K fun. My favorite out of all the Dawn of War games.
My first warhammer game.... ah sweet childhood
The original Dawn of War is one of my favorite RTS games of all time. Great Warhammer 40K flavor, and a fast-paced resource mechanic based around controlling locations. There's no turtling up and building an overwhelming force in this game. You have to get in and brawl.
Dawn of War isn't without its flaws but it's a lot of fun.
good. dont buy soulstorm tho dark crusade 4 life
Excellent 40k rts goodness. If you like either of those, get in there.
The Emperor protects
FOR THE GLORY OF THE NECRONS
Necrons are broken.
this game is kinda nice
It good :)
there are few RTS games that reach the lofty peaks that DOW and Company of Heroes scaled in Relic's heyday.
Dark Crusade is maybe the best of the original ones - Soulstorm has good additions but adding in Flying units was never great and the campaign is too big, vs Dark Crusade's more contained one.
I've played DOW (all of them) for a lot longer than is listed here and i can only recommend it, it's not perfect but it's damn near close
Dark crusade scares me, the necron are just terrifying in this game, both in feel and just not balanced the best imo,
this starts the trend of reworking the dawn of war formula for no real reason, never the less the turn based style works for some and isnt anything amazing,
