As I finally decide to tackle my disgustingly large otome backlog, I am once again put into a scenario where I wish Steam would add a 'neutral' review option. But since there isn't one I'm going to say there's just not enough to Destiny's Princess to recommend it. There is nothing especially bad about the game, its just a 'meh' mobile port I feel no particular love or hatred for- probably helps that I bought it for sale for about 1-5 dollars (At full price I heavily discourage anyone from buying this one).
Art style was pretty and that was really all it had going for it. Everything else felt very underdeveloped and average- which about standard for mobile ports. Story-wise it had an interesting setup but then it felt like it just wanted to rush from point A to point B as quickly as possible with just enough development that you vaguely understood what was going on, but not enough to actually keep you all that interested. It was interesting that some of the love interests were locked into one of two 'bad' endings regardless of what choices you made, but I mean- I've played better games that do the same thing better. Was pretty unique for a mobile otome though, if nothing else.
All the characters were nicely drawn, but design-wise they were all, frankly, very generic with the one exception of Nobunaga. They all fell pretty flat in characterization too- As of writing this review I 100% beat the game this weekend (with the exception of one achievement that seems to be glitched out and unattainable), and if you were to ask me which character was my favorite... I literally could not tell you, I forgot all their personalities and plot points for the most part.
As for the whole 'taboo' plotline of two of the MLs being the protagonists fake "family members" Its really nothing. As in- if you actually LIKE the taboo elements of it you're going to leave disappointed, and if you don't you're not going to feel anything because its so forced that once you reach the mid-point you forget its even there half the time, until generic spite-less maid number 27 mentions that everyone in the castle thinks its really weird that you made out with your twin brother in broad daylight, and you realize "Oh yeah this is one of the incest routes, wasn't it?" The fact that the MC is acutely aware of the fact that she's not actually related to any of these men and that they are, in fact, total strangers to her also takes the bite out of the whole situation, for better or worse.
To conclude- if you're dead set on playing this one- get it on sale, go in with low expectations. Its one of the better Dogenzaka games, whatever that counts for. I'd place it above something like My Secret pets (which was so garbage I ironically enjoyed it) but below the Men of Yoshiwara games, which have no right to be AS entertaining as they are.
it's honestly not too bad if you read it with your expectations on the ground, or no expectations at all. :)
It is Dogenzaka's game after all, that should be its own warning at this point. I can stomach a lot in fiction, too, so I managed to finish the game. (I have it only because it was in a really cheap bundle with at least a dozen other games.)
It honestly has a good premise. I'm not going to lie and say that it's good, because as always these types of otome games always have rushed stories and (in the case of dogenzaka's mature rating) sometimes ....problematic scenarios, but I think overall I like the way it isn't afraid of using heavier themes and even including major character death . Kotaro and Masamune are good, Hanbei is an ass (even after you figure out his reasonings, whether you are able to forgive him or not is very debatable). Yukimura is ...very questionable, I think he's a good dude too, it's just that he has been forced to take our brother's place, and Nobunaga is very questionable, too, to say the least. I left him for last not only because of the game recommendation, but also because I knew that if I did him any earlier, I wouldn't want to continue the game at all afterwards.
What disturbed me wasn't really the fact that these characters liked us, it was more of the reveal in Nobunaga's route that the demon in the dagger chose these 5 men to replace because they had feelings for MC already? Which meant what for her original, unnamed brother and father, exactly? That disturbed me more than these named character's feelings. And the dream / illusion sequence with the demon in Nobu's route too. Damn that ugly thing to whatever a demon's hell is.
