And then there's Jerry Rice & Nitus' Dog Football.
Let's be honest, you're here because of Dunkey. You were surprised this was even on Steam. You were surprised by the price and wanted to buy it for the meme and maybe just maybe play the game on a drunken bored day while you redownload Red Dead Redemption 2 in the background, only to undownload it because you forgot how long the intro of RDR 2 is before you can get to the interesting bits.
Jerry Rice & Nitus' Dog Football was actually a surprise to me. The level of detail of each dog and how their stats effect the game keeps it interesting. The game works like a normal football game however there's a twist of throwing in dog obstacles the dogs can risk themselves on to either run the ball further down the field or for the defense to get to the offensive runner faster. That risk/reward keeps the game fun, interesting and refreshing in ways reminiscent to NFL Street. They even do unique celebrations according to breed while the defensive dogs and human quarterbacks have their own unique crying sessions. Each map has their own unique obstacle courses you can master with various gift boxes you have to get to unlock customizations you can apply to your dogs (a practice so novel in today's games as you must pay instead.)
Adding to the risk/reward obstacles, you get "arf points". When I first saw this, I was crying laughing. I almost shut off the game. Now that I'm 3.5 hours into the game... "Arf points" keeps the game engaging. While you struggle to drive your team down the field, the more stunts you pulls off the obstacles, the more "arf points" you get. (for a example, on the skate park field, you can literally get your dog to ride a skateboard to get closer to the touchdown or get closer to runner trying to score) After you score a touchdown, you get a option of field goal to get the half the arf points you accumulated, OR go for the touchdown and get the full points. TRYING TO GET THESE ARF POINTS MAKES MY PALMS SWEAT. TRYING TO STOP MY OPPS FROM SCORING THEM MAKES MY PALMS SWEAT. It's chaotic. It feels unbalanced but if you realize the struggle that team went through to get those Arf Points, its actually very fair.
Because tbh, the controls suck. But honestly to me it just simulates what a dog would actually do. Sometimes a dog just stops and looks at a tree questioning its existence in this game that nobody plays, forever forgotten as the sea of the internet ever expands like the galaxy itself. Sometimes a dog tackles another dog on their own team. Sometimes, a dog just trips and rolls accidentally tackling the human quarterback. Its honestly how dog football would work in reality...well as close as it can be.
And graphics, that's really what its all about and uh...Judo Baby really put DETAIL in the levels. Its so fun spotting things, the depth of design on the fields. Each human has their own unique dialogue and personalities with their dogs to match them. Its cheesy fun.
I swear I'm begging for a sequel I'll never get because theres so much more they could've done with the game. They could definitely improve the controls. They can definitely improve on the systems such as the dog treats you can give your dog to boost their stats before a play. They could go even deeper with the customization. But this game has very good doggy bones.
Judo Baby, you have a great vision and I really wish you got a second bark at this. Its honestly a game I find myself just turning on after a long day of work and I really don't wanna sit through 2 hours of dialogue of games like Yakuza, Persona, Baldur's Gate, just to get to the fun. Jerry Rice & Nitus' Dog Football immediately puts you in the action. Its childish. There's stereotypes. They got eskimo girl, LOL girl, Scottish pub, black dreadlock kid from the little rascals. Paris Hilton. Everyone is in it. They all get their own theme music.
Idk man... I just really enjoyed this game beyond its meme status. There was clearly thought put into the game. Thanks Judo Baby. Thanks Jerry Rice. Please put Michael Vick in the game. He's a Primm's Hood Cinema Allstar. Put him in the game. Please.
Maybe I'm neurodivergent, but I give this game a strong Arf Points outta Dog bowl. If you played this game, did you love it? Did you hate it? What would you rate it? You're the best. What should I review next? Hit the like if you like. Please subscribe to Jontron. Hit the youtube bell as well.
Anyways, Macgunnny, Jerry Rice & Nitus' Dog Football, Forever.
game
A simple but fun arcade football game with interesting skill based and kid friendly mechanics. The controls are a little strange but it is an excellent mixture of sports, strategy and dogs that is decently fun.
