On the eve of another successfully completed mission, high-ranking member Father Kevin Graham is immediately assigned to retrieve one more artifact that rests beneath Grancel Cathedral. What’s more, even though this is a task he could easily complete on his own, he must reluctantly do so in partnership with his newest recruit, rookie Gralsritter and childhood friend Sister Ries Argent.
Thus begins the start of a routine mission that becomes anything but, delving into a new and mysterious realm that follows an unnaturally strict set of rules: Phantasma. Therein, the history of the Septian Church and the pasts of the many familiar faces who took up arms for the sake of Liberl’s future will be laid bare…and some may have been better off staying forever sealed behind closed doors.
A More Personal Adventure
Trails in the Sky has become a fan favorite for thoughtfully written characters down to its NPCs, and for its final installment further focuses on fleshing out its playable cast via Moon and Star doors found as the story progresses.Familiar Tactics, Brutal Combat
Widely considered the most challenging title in the series, players are encouraged to iterate upon the combat style they’ve come to know in the 3rd’s predecessors by either enjoying its in-depth story on Easy or crying with frustration on its unforgiving Nightmare difficulty. One More from Falcom Sound Team jdk
Nihon Falcom is known for its brilliant music, and the Trails series has never been an exception, with the 3rd adding dozens of new tracks to keep players engaged as they journey through Phantasma.Even More Olivier

A beautiful send-off to an amazing trilogy of JRPGs. Third takes some really strange but creative decisions with its storytelling, but the confidence and willingness to experiment with a lower budget title really paid off.
The main narrative is strong, but the different "Memory Doors" are the real strong point here - expanding on characters from the previous two games and planting seeds for the future two series (Crossbell and Erebonia), all told through a non-linear structure from different perspectives of the cast is somehow a mix of fanservice with really interesting foreshadowing and character growth. It feels like something you could only do with a series like Trails.
The gameplay is still only alright, but I'll forgive it for being complex enough to keep me engaged. Also this game has like the perfect art-style. Absolutely wonderful to look at.
DON'T SKIP IT!!! And don't wait for some remake either come on now...
Misadventures of the ~church besties~
Sky 3 is a bit of a weird one. Tough to talk about it without spoilers, I like the fact that it exists but I definitely wanted more of it overall. Still plenty things to enjoy and it didn't overstay its welcome
I don't know why some people say to skip this game. This game is one of the most important Trails you have to play if you want to get more deep into the story. Go play it if you want to get into trails story more.
Preface: After getting my love for JRPGs back thanks to the Nier games, Yakuza games, and Persona 4 Golden, I was going on a slight decline with the likes of Persona 5 and Final Fantasy 16, two games that left me feeling pretty sour by the time both games were over. To me, the big letdown in those two examples was that I just couldn’t care enough about the characters, and JRPGs have to really need powerful characterization for me to want to follow them on the ride.
Well, I found what I was looking for.
This is a review of the Trails in the Sky trilogy (FC, SC, and 3rd) more than it is a stand-alone review of 3rd. I was going to originally post this in FC’s store page, but I decided to post the review in the 3rd’s, instead, because quite frankly: It deserves it.
I went into these games with absolutely no knowledge of what I was in for, and that is absolutely the way you should engage with these games. The less you know, the better, because unlike a lot of JRPGs, the world truly does invite you to learn about it as much as its central leads. The setting and characters are the stars of these games, and while the first game has an intense slow-burn, the payoff in both SC and 3rd are truly worth the wait. I also believe that you should, without a doubt, make sure you are running the voice-mod that inserts the Japanese VOs, as voice-quality sells you on the hype-moments of the series.
One detail I love about the games is how it builds its world-logic in terms of politics, technology, religion, and even minor details like their measurement-systems. You feel like a fish out of water in FC, but by 3rd? You’re ready to run 1,000 arge races (their version of meters). Even minor information like the fact that monsters are deterred from trade routes via orbment installations that detract them help you believe what civilian life is like in the setting of Liberl.
Combat is serviceable, but also knows how to up the dramatics with flashy attacks, extensive complexity in its Quartz magic system (especially in 3rd), and can oftentimes be used to boost dramatic moments in later story-sections. I think my only gripe with combat is that I wish movement was a free-action to encourage positioning more, but overall, it does the job, and the speed-up function, as well as shining-poms and catch-up XP mechanics truly help reduce grinding to nearly null.
Soundtrack starts off good in FC, thrilling and exciting in SC, and downright perfect in 3rd. Music needs to hit hard in JRPGs to keep me hooked, and this series just keeps getting better in each game. I will likely save some tracks and revisit some of these in the future, because they are so catchy.
Character-writing and dialogue are the make-or-break. I understand that there’s a stereotype about how JRPGs never shut up at times, and while the games can become borderline visual-novels at times with how long the dialogue can drag, I have to give huge props to Falcom’s writing team, because I could enjoy the character-banter between these characters all day. It reminds me of the party of Persona 4 Golden, in the sense that these genuinely feel like friends by the time you’ve gotten to the end of 3rd. The finale left me pretty speechless with how emotionally captivated I was by the conclusion.
Special shout-outs to Olivier, Agate, Kevin, and Ries as my absolute favorites of this cast. It especially says a lot about the confidence of the writing-team that Ries only had one game to shine by the 3rd, and yet she sniped pretty hard how easy it was to enjoy her characterization. I also want to highlight that 3rd’s main story, as well as some of its door sequences (especially 15), push the boundary on how far you can drive a nail into someone’s heart when it comes to liking characters.
I genuinely am excited to continue the journey of the future games. You should check these out if you want a long, deep, character-driven JRPG. See you in Crossbell!
The least skippable game in the series. No, really. DO NOT SKIP THIS ONE.
Not only is Kevin's journey fantastic, but there is so much set up for future arcs. Most of it sets up the Cold Steel games, but some of it even relates to Daybreak. The characters from the first two games are even further developed and explored, and certain characters have incredibly shocking reveals. The battle system is one again improved upon (battle really only gets better as the series goes on).
Also, this game has the greatest soundtrack ever made.
Fantastic finish to an amazing trilogy! A lot of great characterization, especially for some characters from the previous games that needed more. If you are here, then I assume you already played the other two. No need to question it, just play this one, too.
quite quick playthrough, epilogue to the first two games, a lot of story wrap ups
A pretty good ending for the trail in the sky trilogy, i would consider this game more of a DLC/Epilogue to the story from the second chapter.
PROS:
-This game is by far the shortest between the 3
-Like usual the characters and their interactions are pretty funny(barring a couple of weird interactions)
-I liked the difficulty a lot in here since it's though while not being too unfair
-In my opinion in this game the dungeon exploration is way less annoying that in the first two games since it's much shorter
CONS:
-The main plot while not bad i think it's not as good as the previous two
-It does have some very notable padding scenes/events that may or may not be annoying to certain players(i didn't mind them since they were entertaing enough but i can see why other players may not like them)
-Dungeon exploration is way more present in this game
I m a fan of all legends of heroes, they all got their charm and stories. make a collection of them as they are hours of stories and game time :)
An emotional conclusion to the Trails in the Sky trilogy, this entry distills the gameplay of the previous entries into a dungeon crawler. The combat is still enjoyable, and the story beats still hit the right notes. This series now ranks as my favorite game trilogy of all time. 👍👍
More of sky, and more of a dungeon crawler than the others. Still a good story.
Finally, I have finished this game in the easy mode and got twenty achievements. The side stories are really interesting.
But I don't think I can finish it on nightmare. The final boss of easy mode is a tough one.
For me, that's enough. Next I will play Trails from Zero or Cold Steel.
If you like turn based JRPGs, this is a good one, but its two predecessors are better. This one is the third chapter, yes, but different. For that reason, it's a little harder to recommend, but I'm still recommending if you want the backstory of several characters and all that.
But one thing in its favor is that it sort of set ups the future games - the one that follows is Trails From Zero (and Trails To Azure). I have loved both of those games, so give this one a shot if you've played the first two Sky games.
Another great RPG from Nihon Falcom. I was worried that having Kevin as the
protagonist would be unpleasant. It turns out this is more of an ensemble story and the memory doors allow for side stories about many different characters. It made me want to jump into the next game in the series right away.
A very special and unique game even by the Sky trilogy standards; a masterpiece of the most sneaky sort. Just like FC pretended to be a straightforward coming-of-age story, the 3rd dons the mask of an unassuming dungeon crawler with epilogue-style content on the side, only to eventually hit you with some of the most dark, emotional and well-written storytelling in the series.
This entry sees a change of the main character’s position from Estelle to Kevin, and his story is as touching as it is heartbreaking. The only other game I know of that explores similar topics with equal depth is Tales of Berseria; nothing else comes close to the same raw energy of diving right into characters’ damaged psyches without holding anything back. JRPG stories tend to be ideological rather than psychological: rounding up motivations to conceptual ideas, focusing on actions instead of the inner states which lead to those actions, but that’s not the case here. Here, you will see everything that was happening inside Kevin’s head, and you will feel through it with unparalleled levels of immersion.
The notorious Star Door 15 is also an absolute feat of storytelling, painting a gut-wrenching picture without explicitly stating the worst parts. It’s highly impressive how well its corresponding character is developed and integrated into the cast throughout this entry, even though her appearance itself may come as a surprise. Some doors (i.e. side stories) can indeed feel like filler, made to please the fans rather than meaningfully expand on the world, but there are other memorable examples, like Olivier and Osborne perfectly setting up the Erebonia arc with one charged political conversation or Mary from the orphanage turning an unassuming daily episode into the most trippily mysterious piece of worldbuilding yet.
The turn-based combat is at the top of its game too, carrying over your high-level party from the SC’s finale along with 4 more playable characters. The only downside is that it really expects you to use every tool at your disposal and can get quite brutal if you don’t, even on Normal, but with care and patience you’ll be in for some very rewarding battles. And if you don’t feel like being tactical, dropping to Easy and playing it just for the story is a totally valid approach as well (LPT: there’s no option to change the difficulty mid-game, but you can still do so quickly and safely by hex-editing the save file).
Last but not least, it’s masterful how the setting here is almost perfectly tailored to this story but at the same time continues to expand on the previous entry’s themes. If you thought Aureole and the far-reaching consequences of its miraculous power were maybe a bit glossed over in SC, you should feel right at home with the 3rd – but even if you didn’t, this connection makes it work not just as a unique epilogue but also as a satisfying conclusion to the Sky trilogy as a whole.
If you care about quality storytelling in games at all, please play this gem. It really is an unforgettable experience.
Soundtrack highlighs: overdosing on Falcom Sound Team jdk bliss, farewell my nightmares.
If you didn't really like Kevin Graham in SC, then Sky 3rd is the serving you need to change your mind. Not only do you get to explore the darker side of his story, but you get a ton of character development for the rest of the cast from the FC/SC, along with a few new appearances.
Highly recommend playing with evo Japanese voice patch... it made it much more enjoyable!
Oh and what a BANGER of a sound track!
holy peak!
While not as good as Trails in the Sky FC and SC, this was still a fun game and is still worth playing, especially if you intend on playing through the entire series. This one did take me awhile to get through though, as I really wanted to just move on to the other better titles.
A lot of people say that Trails in the Sky the 3rd is a skippable gameplay-focused addition to the series that does not add much to the story. However, that is completely wrong because this game is actually a direct continuation of the story and the events of this game play a big role in major events in the following games. More importantly though is that this game gives a lot of attention to character arcs that were built up over the course of the last two games. For some of these characters this is their conclusion because this game is their last direct appearance. Some this is also setup for when other characters appear in later games and It is also the first appearance of some pretty major characters in the series. People who care more about story should absolutely not skip this.
Trails in the Sky is one of the best games ever made, and there is really no reason to not see its story through to the end before moving onto the rest of the franchise.
there are tears running down my cheeks as i type this, thank you falcom.
onwards to crossbell.
has ries argent. 10/10
The plot thickens
More side-story and post-script to the first two than a continuation still a wonderful game especially if you plan on playing further in the series.
best story ever
A proper farewell to the Sky series. It still hits me that everyone was saying their goodbyes at the last part. Those hours on opening and going through doors really made me attached to every characters (even Gilbert).
But every journey must come to an end.
The phasing in Chapter 6 was a bit rough in my opinion. But after all those boss rush, Chapter7, Star Door 14 and 15 and Chapter 8 were so straightforward I did it in one sitting.
On my way to embark Crossbell's saga. :)
For me this was the perfect send off to all the character we met throughout this arc, the combat was so much more balanced and everyone is actually useful, I enjoy the combat of the series so for me it was great how it was encounter after encounter like a dungeon crawler, with the story doors you are going to find from heartwarming moments to some gut punching ones, I went from thinking turn based games were boring to having a great time and now looking into some games I may have dismissed because of their gamepaly thanks to this series, now onto the new arc.
And yet another excellent Trails game, wrapping up the Sky trilogy in a neat lil epilogue.
Gameplay differs to the previous series by being a Dungeon Crawler but it still delivers a great story with great characters and development.
Don't skip out on the Memory doors.
And so we arrive at the end of the first major arc. Good god, I am so glad that I did not listen to anyone who tried to pass 3rd off as some kind of unimportant little side thing. This game is PIVOTAL to multiple characters's stories, Renne and Kevin most of all. I am in awe at how well they handled Renne's backstory. Once again, XSeed has my eternal gratitude for letting me experience this story in English.
traaaaails
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝗿𝗱 is the last part of the Sky Trilogy and it also closed the Liberl Arc story.
What makes 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝗿𝗱 story so great it's because they explain every missing details that the first 2 game left behind and they also give us a more detail story to all the main-casts character development which make us the player wanting to know since the last 2 games (especially 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲 and 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗲𝗿).
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝗿𝗱 also gives us a really good closing for the Liberl Arc and also a really great sets up for the next Arc in the next games that make us the player feels really really excited to play it as soon as we finished this game.
introduction of fast travel and party management, but still just a prototype feel of both.
The battle system is still very much the same as previous two games, pretty bad.
maybe just watch on youtube?
It would be my pleasure.
Trails in the Sky FC is going to be remade - awesome! I assume this means that they'll eventually get to remaking SC and 3rd.
Curiously, it was common for newcomers to ask whether or not Sky the 3rd could be skipped. Reasons varied for this question – from laziness to not wanting to play an older game…or perhaps they have heard how much the formula had changed for Sky the 3rd.
I would implore those who are taking the worldbuilding seriously to NOT skip this one. This game demonstrates the prominent role that the church has in Zemuria and explains the backstory behind several characters and events from FC/SC.
It is true – the game presents these backstories in an inorganic way. The game consists of going through a huge dungeon and encountering doors in which you can witness these backstories. Depending on how you like worldbuilding in games, this may strike as odd. For me personally, the events themselves were entertaining so I didn’t mind.
There is one exception - I will say there is one certain door that I wish had more proper build up. The severity of the tragedy of that event made me wish there were more hints in SC that led to this revelation. Anyone who has played this game knows which door I’m talking about – it’s the most infamous one in the entire game. I couldn’t help but feel a sting of missed potential with this one, because with more proper hints in the previous game regarding this character, it could have been even more impactful than it is now. As a result, despite the dark and heavy nature of the event, it may feel a little forced, even though I still simultaneously sympathized with the character.
The importance of buildup cannot be understated, because funnily enough, this door itself serves as buildup to an event in Trails to Zero, the next game in the chronology. The event in Trails to Zero related to this door became incredibly emotionally intense and I’d argue it’s the best section of that game. If anything, play Sky the 3rd so that section in Zero makes more sense!
Even that all these points aside, Kevin’s (the main character) story is a memorable standalone experience and you’d be missing out if this was skipped.
Perhaps there were those who were hesitant to play this game as they may have heard that Sky the 3rd’s main story is not as relevant to the Trails world at large compared to other games. While that may be true, there are still great moments and important worldbuilding foundations that will be referenced in later games. Now that it’s (hopefully) going to be eventually remade, I really don’t think there’s any excuse. Great game, go play it!
On a side note…I hope the newcomer meta doesn’t shift from “Can I skip Sky the 3rd?” to “Can I skip the Crossbell games?” now that the Sky games are being remade LOL
Bringing the balance to the reviews. Easily bottom 3 (only because i haven't played Crossbell yet.)
game so good the remake in 5+ years will make star doors even better
Good game. I was little worried as to how Kevin would hold up as the protagonist but I ended up really liking him, and Ries was pretty ok too. Damn that scene with Renne at the end almost had me crying. Hopefully Estelle and Joshua find her and she becomes their family soon. And of course the music is really good as always.
Second favorite Trails in the Sky game, very good way to end this set of games
brilliant payoff to the liberl arc, emotional and does a fantastic job at fleshing out the cast from the previous two games while setting up the crossbell arc
The 3rd game in the trilogy. It feels like DLC/epilogue, but still important to the series. If you were invested in the various Characters and NPC's, this will give you a lot more story and closure to their lives. It definitely is the weakest plot-wise, but it finished strong and loved all the possible party options. It was like saying goodbye to many of the characters you spent so much time with.
Definitely recommended to hunt down and install the Japanese voice pack for the whole trilogy. It enhances the experience so much and a lot better at just reading text the whole time.
Good Game!
In what is likely a VERY unpopular opinion, this is probably my favorite of the Skies trilogy. TC has been a breath of fresh air blissfully free of the often tedious side quests that plagued the first two games. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate world building, but let's be honest. We care about our party members and other prominent characters. Not Bobby Joe from down the street who lost her cat. And TC has replaced those side quests with more lore about the characters we know and truly care about. That alone is enough for me to recommend it.
good
What a fantastic way to end a trilogy.
A very satisfying experience and conclusion until the very end. I don't really understand the minds of the people that said that the third title of Liberl Arc is optional even though the journeys of every hero involved in the last two titles are explained here after the ending of SC.
Nothing can be said to clearly express how satisfied I am finishing this game. Every character got their own development, even Renne's past and important info regarding Ouroboros and neighboring countries are explained here.
Even though the game forced us to use all characters couple of times throughout the game, it didn't make the experience difficult and every character ended up easily with best gears and ideal level before the final bosses. I enjoyed the last boss here more than the one in SC. Challenging but not frustrating, just how I like it for every game.
I'm feeling the same way as the cast when they said goodbye o one another at the end. It's sad seeing that I won't be able to see Sky's cast as often in next arc/region since I love them too much (probably my most fave cast in any JRPG I've played so far), but I guess it's time to move on.
Crossbell+Erebonia next. Hopefully the next story and characters' development would be better than the ones in Liberl. I have high hopes.
9/10
Goated soundtracks, love the doors.
Love that they did something different compared to the last 2 games
Already loved Kevin in SC and seeing him being a protagonist on the 3rd got me very excited. After finishing the game I was in tears. Kevin's backstory hit like truck. Please play this game, its really REALLY GOOD!
GOD I LOVE THIS SERIES! Definitely buying more titles!
The gameplay of this entry in the series is much more balanced, and the strategy continues to be more fleshed out in a satisfying way. However, that is where my praise ends for this game.
The devs clearly had been given less time and money to make this game, compared to the first and second chapters. Despite their obvious attempts to make ends meet in spite of their challenges, the game severely suffers due to the lack of time and effort allocated. There are no new settings in this game, besides the final dungeon. The story is very weak, with essentially all progress in it happening along the borders of the game's chapters. With the lack of side and background characters that gave the first two games their amazing atmosphere, the middle of every chapter, without fail, becomes extremely slow. In addition, the story that is there entirely hinges on a select few characters' growth throughout the game. There is some effect of the story on the world, but it remains obscure and rarely referenced. The flashback scenes distributed throughout the game have some very interesting stories to tell, but they are the only highlight of the game, outside of slight additions to the gameplay strategy. If you are very invested in the stories of the characters from the first two games, like I am, the game is definitely worth playing. Otherwise, there are much better jrpgs that you could be playing.
lechter arundel
I was not sure what to expect from the 3rd installment of the Trials in the Sky series. This game felt like more of a filler episode in anime or shows that goes into detail of other characters individuals stories before and after the events in FC and SC. It was interesting to see what the other characters where up to after SC. But it didn't quite feel like your general Joshua and Estelle adventure story. Since the main characters are different.
COMBAT 7/10 - It was not different from how FC was, same quartz, same combat system. So people should be used to it at this point (Was expecting a new mechanic like FC introduced Chain system).
ART 9/10 - As usual it is a good style
MUSIC 10/10 - after playing the trilogy every installment gave great soundtracks.
DIFFICULTY 8/10 - The game expects you to know how to build characters and use their arts and crafts. I have my fair share of game-overs in the last boss
OVERALL 7/10 - Good game but did not feel like a 3rd installment rather it felt like 2.5
