This is not a good game. The art is nice, music is pretty good, the concept of the story is not horrible...But the writing is. My god.
My main issue is MC. She is unbearable at her worst and boring at her best. She's supposed to be this powerful, immortal character, but every fk time she has a chance to do ANYTHING she either "can't move" or passing out. It got so ridiculous, that every time I read her "I can't move" I was saying out loud "Yeah, what else is new". The cherry on top is how she often says/thinks how she's not some damsel. The irony, I can't... And that's not even all! Her inability to focus while working is infuriating, she'd rather act like 13-year old first time in love (mind you, she's supposed to be 20 and with some experience). She's not a leader and would be a horrible CEO (especially cause she let's her hormones make BUSINESS decisions). She's dumb, naive and has an allergy for making good choices. And she supposed to have her own story and "mission" to do like finding her mother and getting rid of her powers and immortality CAUSE REASONS. By the way, her immortality doesn't affect sht, cause dudes still sacrifice themselves for her which is just so dumb..., but don't expect to get resolution for that, because her main priority is whatever her dude is going through. Not very feminist, authors. Like seriously, you'll never know where her mama went cause we never ever meet her again. Ever.. So, yeah, she's just an embarrassment of the MC.
Dudes are not much better. First of all, the chemistry with almost all of them is non-existent, romance progression is rarely there (she just decides she's in love now, so time to act awkward). The exceptions are Shinji and maybe Hikaru.
Takumi is mid. Rash, kind of dumb and sometimes pretty annoying.
Tatsuya has several of the most cringe moments in his route like, MC apparently didn't look in the mirror for 3 goddamn days; fighting a duel over MC with her being basically the prize - cause she's an object I guess; and people constantly making assumptions and implications that these two are dating - it's not cute, it's super fk annoying and the whole route just feels like some cringe middle school fanfic.
Shou is...fine? Mostly boring and forgettable, so much so that I had to skip a lot of his route. And of course MC thought that running after your stalker is a good idea when she is unarmed, barely knows any magic and stalker is going into dark abandoned alley.
Shinji is the best of the worst. His route actually pretty interesting (if you can stomach MC stupidity and naivete of course), he is subjectively the hottest, has pretty fun personality and kind of has a chemistry with MC. And the moment with flower crown was actually cute.
Hikaru route is the most interesting one, but Hikaru himself is a creep. There was absolutely no reason for authors to make him a professor. The plot was pretty good, but I would enjoy it a lot more if there was no romance. It's far, far from perfect though. Like why would MC care about him at all? At that point in the story she only knows him as a jerk/creep professor that assaulted her and was the reason behind her super hella traumatic experience of floating in nothingness for who knows how long, until she disappears. But suddenly she's down to travelling parallel timelines doing fetch quest for his soul? What. And the super strong GODDESS OF TIME had 500 years to think, but never realised that maybe silly, weak humans didn't killed a god for no reason. I mean, I guess she is a goddess of time, not wisdom. But overall, his route is least cringe and I didn't hate myself constantly for reading it. He didn't have to be a professor and it didn't have to be separated into 2 books.
Side note, you know the game is not good when skipping text you've read is the most enjoyable part. Also, personal pet peeve, but when you give your MC a lot of power that is controlled by emotions, I expect at least 1 bad/dark end when she goes berserk unleashing all of it because she just done with it all. Would've been so cool too. Instead we get boring bad ends, unintentionally hilarious bad ends or bad ends that are actually pretty good ends for MC probably.
Epilogues are pointless. Mostly feels like authors taunting you. Like, "See? We didn't forget she has her own story and motivations. You're just not gonna get it lol." His POV stories are not worth it - short and boring. God of Chaos mini story is just some 4th wall break set up for sequel/spin-off that will never be released.
It's just not a good game. I cannot in good conscience recommend it, especially cause all the parts without sale will cost you around 20$.
I really enjoyed this game. The endings are all so varied and with each route you uncover more mysteries about your world. The individual routes themselves build onto the story line which I have never run across in a game before.
I was very torn about whether or not to recommend this game. On one hand, it's very clear the studio put a lot of effort into it and I think they have a really great concept on their hands. The content is sizeable, the art is beautiful, and the music is great. On the other hand, those things alone do not make a quality game, and I found Mystic Destinies to be incredibly unpolished.
First of all, each chapter of every single route in the game was peppered with errors! Sentences like, "I thought knew he felt that way," where you can tell it was originally written one way then was changed and just didn't get edited properly. This happened so many times, it was absolutely ridiculous. A few mistakes here or there are expected, but their number of errors far surpassed the amount you would expect to find in a product you paid for.
Second, the content didn't feel edited. I don't just mean structure mistakes, but the story itself. There were numerous moments when information was inserted into the plot when it shouldn't have been (for example, the MC calling a character by their name before the MC had even learned their name) and moments when information was inserted at random and then unexplained. One of the most obvious moments was during Shou's route when the MC recognizes Takumi but then never explains where she recognized him from. The moment just passes awkwardly. I reread it several times trying to see if I missed something but I hadn't.
Third, the script was in desperate need of tightening up. I found it overly verbose to the point of being repetitive and boring, so that every time I started to get sucked in and interested, I got pulled right back out by long-winded internal monologues, time skips, and irrelevant information. On top of that, I really dislike having important information recalled by the MC when it should be something I experience with her, and that happens a lot.
Fourth, the presentation started off really strong but then quickly lost momentum. I didn't mind being confused at first because the MC herself was confused about what had happened to her, but then we got some time skips and I was still confused while the MC had apparently learned some stuff. I would've appreciated a longer prologue that fleshed out the game world and lore a little bit more so that I felt more on the same page as the MC. In a game where you aren't limited by which route you can play first, it's important to find that balance of information, and I don't think MDSOA achieved that balance.
A few other minor complaints:
-I was really unimpressed with the MC. Her growth as a sorceress was really varied and largely underexplored. In most conflicts, she was pretty useless so that by the time she actually did something effective, I had a hard time believing it.
-Some of the characters' personalities lacked consistency at times, including the MC.
-The endings were dependent upon player choices but there was no intuitive reason why option A, B, and C gave Z-ending. I remember going back through for achievements and was thinking, "What does this have to do with anything?"
-The illusion of choice was, 90% of the time, an illusion. What you picked may get you a different ending, but it wouldn't change anything at all about the actual story, which was really unsatisfying.
-They just dismissed the prologue's plot entirely and, in some routes, that felt very strange.
-There were times when the art didn't line up with the story.
-This is just nitpicking, but it annoyed me: in a couple of the routes, nearly every scene where two or more people got together required drinks (often accompanied by snacks). In some places it felt natural, in others it was just weird filler text and it happened often enough to be noticeable.
The game was so long-winded and had enough problem areas that I had a hard time investing myself in the characters and their stories. I spent nearly 60 hours getting through this game, and after about 20, I was ready to quit and only kept going because I was determined to get some answers (I had high hopes for the last route and, sadly, it disappointed me the most). I've played free games with more polish and a tighter story than this one. At the end of the day, I think MDSOA has a lot of potential to be an amazing game. It has so many things going for it but, to me, it just fails in the execution.
Well, I was able to get it when it was on sale for $10 ('it' being a bundle). This included everything except the POV and Chaos story, which I was disappointed to find out later. Honestly, they just need to put the whole thing together. The only reason I don't completely write off the aspect of separating each story and epilogues is if someone buys it at full price but can't buy everyting at that time (~$45). However, the game being classified as 'Free to Play' is just ridiculous.
Was it worth the price I paid? Absolutely, without a doubt.
Am I going to pay another $10 for the 'Deluxe Edition' DLC which is two POV stories and the Chaos story? Nope.
Seriously, just wait for it to go on sale. Zero regrets. ~Favorite Route: Shinji~ <3
I don't know why I didn't write a review sooner but... I've been following the developers for a long while now, and bought this game a year ago, and I can seriously say that I admire these girls for producing this masterpiece! I really hope that the sequel (Echoes) comes out in the second half of this year like they say it will due to it being pushed back a lot and I really can't wait anymore.
This game is one of my favourite games ever (hence why it says I spent 180 hours playing it.. BUT it's actually more than that due to being offline when playing it also lmao) and I can easily say that I'm one of its biggest fans haha. That being said, my review is not going to be biased.. It's just going to be.. my review. (:
Anyway, I TOTALLY recommend this game, but people need to be aware of the fact that this game is NOT FREE! Yes, it says it is but that's because it's free to play the prologue and 3 chapters of the route of each of the 5 guys.. everything else needs money (and there's a lot of chapters for each of the guys). I'd say that the money was my only downfall for this game (because I can't really waste money) but even that was still okay because the money didn't go to waste due to me playing it constantly~
The graphics/artwork are gorgeous, and the storyline is creative, intriguing and really well written! Moreover all five routes are extremely different from each other and will keep you hooked (Takumi's is my favourite), and you'll end up easily falling in love with all the guys (in real life hehe) and their different personalities. I also fell in love with the heroine because her character was so relatable and enjoyable. So yeah, I spent all my free time playing this game, I couldn't get enough of it; I was addicted! The game's also easy to play (runs smoothly etc) and the soundtrack is extremely beautiful..
Most of the time I actually found myself staying on the starting menu jamming to the song instead of playing the game.
To conclude, there's minor flaws with this game, but that comes with any game. If you want this game please don't let money put you off and just try it for yourself! You may get hooked like I did <3
Honestly, this game is totally worth your money. A friend bought me my first route as an early birthday gift and I'm looking into buying the others because they're just that captivating. The plot is amazing; it's all so heartwarming, heartbreaking, and full of swirling emotions to keep you on your toes. It really does make you want more.
Pay to finish it. !
What a con.
Pay to finish !
Only the 1st 3 parts are free. Then there is another 9 more to pay for.
It's a con !
Should not say free to play !
I'm relatively new to these types of games, but I have to say that this is one I really enjoyed. It isn't terribly expensive for the quality, either. The illustrations and routes are plentiful.
I started with Taku's route and am about to play another route. The fact that I came back to enjoy another route should speak for itself! :) You can read the first four chapters or so for each character absolutely free. There are plenty of story types, too. Kudos to the creators. I've certaintly enjoyed my time in this world.
I say try it out. ^_~v
I followed the production of this game for a very long time before I finally had the chance to sit down and play it. I was very excited to get the chance to experience something new and to support an indie VN developer. However, I am genuinely sorry to say that I have never before have I been so absolutely and utterly disappointed with a game. I wanted to like it so badly. It looked so promising, so interesting and it fell completely short. If it wasn’t already too late, I would request a refund. Since that isn’t an option, I’ll try and provide as thorough of a review as I possibly can.
ART
The art is lovely, as long as you only look at the sprites. While I saw some inconsistencies with the sprites, overall I would say they are of amazing quality. The sprites are by far the strongest aspect of this game. But only the sprites. The backgrounds were obviously stock and clashed horribly with the art style of the sprites. At times the sprites looked fuzzy and out of place because of the backgrounds, considerably diminishing the immersion.
MUSIC
I see so many people complimenting the OST that I have to wonder if they were actually listening to the same music I was. The tracks are bland and uninteresting and obvious stock material. The tracks do not loop very well, making it painfully obvious when a track suddenly repeats. For the most part, the tracks did fit in well, except for a few that felt incredibly strange and out of style compared to the rest of the OST. You could play this game muted and it would make no difference.
WRITING
The writing was by far the weakest point of the game. The Protagonist is vapid, confusing, and inconsistent. The game provides choices that would suggest you’re about to get some world building, and then immediately back pedals and undermines the player’s curiosity and desire to know more about the world by saying “ask me later” and never bringing it up again. A
character is introduced as a stranger in the game’s prologue, and once you purchase a route you are supposed to believe that he is the Protag’s long lost friend, and then he is never mentioned again. Every unique thing about the protag that is established in the prologue is strangely forgotten until it’s suddenly convenient to bring it up again. Each character route is advertised as its own complete story, but at the end (of at least Shinji’s route) you know absolutely nothing about the protag. You never find out more about her powers, there is hardly any mention of what happened to her mother or the impact on her family or future, she never focuses on her magic beyond plot device, she never deals with her curse, and she has no resolution to her own dilemma. As the game progressed, she became increasingly annoying. Her character development is somewhere between nonexistent and shoddy at best.
Every single time skip felt awkward and unnatural. At times, the game introduces concepts you are simply supposed to accept without questioning. What is this gear thing that instantly changes your clothes like some magical girl anime? Why does the Protag not react to suddenly losing her glasses whenever she transforms? Who knows. I sure don’t.
In Shinji’s route specifically, I was completely disgusted how their fight was handled. They did not talk. They did not apologize to one another. They did not address their issues. Instead, everything was resolved with sex. And that was it. The subject was never brought up again. Because sex resolves everything and fixes all relationship problems. Who needs communication? I’m very glad this is the lesson I walked away with. While I enjoyed Shinji as a character far more than the Protag, he had his own fair share of problems, beyond the whole sex solves everything dilemma. It is stressed multiple times that he is a kind a helpful person, but no examples are ever given to prove this. His big secret with the death magic and ghost possession business feels completely irrelevant. Even when it does come into play, it feels disorganized, like a first time writer trying to make their first OC as cool as possible.
I found multiple typos while reading and dialogue presented underneath the wrong name. I’m pretty certain that Shinji did not intend to call his own father “my darling husband.” On top of that, the GUI is bland and uninteresting.
In the end, I was left starving for more than what I got. I hate the Protagonist, I hate the lack of explanation for anything, I hate how absolutely needless half of the scenes that could have expanded on lore and side characters (who I adored, they were far more interesting than most of the main characters) felt. There was so much potential in this game, and I feel like all of it was wasted. Since I bought this game with Christmas money from my twin and I wish to honor his gift in every way, I'll continue to play what I purchased. Maybe my opinion will change, and I desperately hope that it does. If so, I'll gladly update this review.
But as of right now, honestly, in my eyes the only thing that made this game even remotely worth my poor brother's money was Shinji ripping out a still beating heart. That was beautiful.
TL;DR
Play something else. There are other indie developers more deserving of your time and money.
I'm pretty picky on what games to get let alone buy. A friend and I played this to just pass the time, not thinking much of it at the time, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well the stories are executed in this game. Each one is unique and keeps you wanting more. I highly reccomend this game for whoever is really wanting an adventerous story! I'm eagerly looking forward to what Aeon Dream Studios has instore for the future!
I love the game, everything to the artwork to the storylines. It’s a lot different than my other games that I pay, but something’s drawn me to it—I think it was both my friends’ recommendation and the artwork—and I am so glad that I bought this game. I also love the fact each story will have multiple seasons we could play far after the first story; I love that we will see more of the boys and how Ena [my character] copes with the major things that happened in the first story. If you love fantasy in a different light and deep stories, put up this game
Well, I need to give it a down, due to its pay2read mode.*
I bet they will also put soundtrack as DLC...
* my experiences with paid VNs are bad, I only enjoyed 2 of them. And ~20 others were bad.
I can understand why this is paid, at least it put more effort into customizing GUI/HUD, fancy visuals (somehow) and music. But still... Nowhere is marked that it's demo... and it should be considered as one.
Story and Characters
I have to admit, this is the best character route to date. Takumi has significant character growth and shows a lot of different emotions throughout the playthrough. The main story I believe, is the strongest yet out of all the routes and takes the player in for a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Like previous character routes, I really like how most characters appear in the other story routes and add depth to the development to the world and storytelling. I also enjoy that unlike most Otome's where the answers are cookie cutter and easy to tell which are the "bad" answers, this game does not insult your intelligence and instead has more complex dialogue between the heroine and romance interests.
Art/Animation
Overall, animation was amazing. I have played a lot of Otome games in the past and this is one of the few that I can always remember for being visually stunning. I get lost just looking at the backgrounds and all the subtle changes in facial expressions each character shows.
Sound
Mystic Destinies: Serendipity of Aeons overall has an AMAZING soundtrack. I was really impressed with the music and sound effects in this game. Takumi's route in my opinion has the best music so far. The music fits the plot, characters and is so darn cool~ Of course that's Takumi approved.
Enjoyment
I am in euphoria at finishing Takumi's route. Takumi's story was intriguing, captivating, and thrilling at the end. It felt bittersweet when I finished and it kept me wanting more. By the end of the game you can really feel the power of the love that is shared between the heroine and Takumi. Takumi is a really well written character and with the strong plot it makes the player wanting to finish the game in one sitting. All this, with a really good soundtrack and one of the best romance routes in the game, I recommend this game because it is one of the best Otome games out right now. 10/10.
I've been playing Otome type of games for years now, but I rarely get my hands on gems like this (not commercial ones at least)! Each DLC has a unique story, with beautiful art and magical mystery thrown in it, that leaves you breathless and wanting for more. And it gets better with each DLC. I got to play the previous parts thanks to my friend, that recomended it, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the latest part myself. The characters are realistic, distinctive and the story itself is emotionally engaging. Each story tells you a little bit about other main characters, just enough to pique your interest, and let you to get to know them just a little bit better (plus, I can't wait to finally find out what's up with the elusive 'mother' and her reasoning behind all of this).
Takumi's route is my favourite one, though, tightly followed by Shinji's. I don't usually fall for 'childhood-friends-to-lovers' trope, but this time I fell and fell hard. I just love how gradually and slowly the relationship builds, how they overcome and face the troubles together. I'm a sucker when it comes to tragic endings, but this time, I thanked the creators this is not the case. I couldn't bear to see the character to suffer more than he already has..
5/5 and I just can't wait for the last route to be finally out.
