Until something does, anyway! A mysterious masked figure shows up one night and steals six holy idols from the local shrine. The self-proclaimed “Archduke of Arges” tenders a hefty reward for their return, and our “brave” duo jumps at the chance to go find them – Pokkle for the glory, and Pipiro strictly for the cash moneys.
Their journey will take them to every last nook and cranny across the land and lead to confrontations with a wide variety of friends and foes, each more ludicrous than the last, as a sinister plot to revive an ancient “Demon Lord” unfolds and 500 years’ worth of history comes into focus. Can two 14-year-olds with limited abilities and almost no social skills truly save the day? Or is Arges just pretty much screwed?
Released in Japan simply as Zwei!!, Zwei: The Arges Adventure is the direct predecessor to the previously released Nihon Falcom action RPG Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection, from the creators of the popular Ys and The Legend of Heroes franchises.
Boasting a completely standalone story set on a mysterious “low fantasy” island floating amongst the clouds, Zwei: The Arges Adventure plays out as a classically styled action-oriented 2D dungeon crawler with oodles of optional content and unlockables, player-defined challenge through a unique food-based experience system, and a pervading tongue-in-cheek humor style that helps set it apart from other entries in the genre. Although released on several different platforms in Japan over the years, this is the first time it’s ever been officially released in English, and is the most feature-complete version of the game to date.

Easily one of Falcom's worst games.
It's got shallow gameplay, horrible controls, padded dungeons, paper thin story, mediocre/forgettable music, dialogue that feels straight from 2010ish internet memes and not a fantasy world.
The only thing it has going for it is the "Typing of Ys" minigame.
Go play Xanadu Next instead. It's way better.
Mixed feelings about this one, sadly! I won’t pretend to put on my researcher cap as this is my second Falcom game besides Gurumin, but there’s a sophomoric feel to Zwei that is at least partially verified by looking at the developer credits to see that it’s much of the creative team’s first forays into game design, scenario and direction etc. I think it really shows in the ways that matter to me, charm-wise, multiplied by how fascinatingly of-its-time it is. The early-2000s design quirks, the MMO-like UI, the anachronistic rhythm mechanic, it all gives the game a unique texture that, while frustrating, is at least interesting, and Interesting is in short supply these days. The 2018 localisation did a decent job retaining the tone and humor you’d expect from a JRPG of that era, and that alone makes it a fun curiosity piece.
As most of the reviews here can attest to, this game can be painfully dull lol. Combat is functional but there’s not much going on - a sole dainty attack that is only modified by your equipment. Mentioned the rhythm mechanic earlier but it’s so out of place? Gurumin had one, too, but it was at the very least timed to the BGM, here attacking on the “clap” is just something I started accepting as happy accidents to coincide with critical hits. The dungeons themselves are at the very least short and punchy, lots of micro puzzle rooms that use the game’s few mechanics in inventive ways, but it rings hollow when there’s little challenge besides damage checks. I truly wanted to preface this review with a few pointers for anyone curious to play it, but this really is just a case of a companion guide being a necessity - signposting here is woefully inadequate 😔.
One weird focal mechanic here is the fact that you don’t get EXP from killing enemies, rather only from eating food. The game has an exchange mechanic where you can swap ten of any one given item for a superfood that has higher EXP yield than the sum of its parts - and can continue the exchange for even higher level food. It kind of hooked into my brain as an oddly satisfying routine of only eating what I needed to meet the bare minimum stat requirements to push me through a dungeon, snowballing my pantry in size as much as I could. My poor guys were staring at a mounting pile of bone in meat and I was swatting their hands away with a large ladle.
The whole game is just very carried by charm points, but at least it has a lot of charm to give. Characterful flavour text absolutely everywhere dependant on the character you’re inspecting the environment with. Unlockable widgets that stay on the screen permanently, like a clock and a pet minigame. NPCs that walk around the town independent of you, changing their routines and dialogue at story milestones. A downright adorable art direction that is, to me at least, uncannily MapleStory or Trickster Online, right down to the UI.. Lovely character art and environments.
If you would permit me a bit of strange and very personal praise; I hate menus in games more often than not because they don’t feel very tactile. One thing that struck me when I was playing Animal Crossing (GC) last year was that much of the daily routine wasn’t only the tasks themselves, but the labour of inputting and fulfilling them via the menus. Picking up items, dragging them through slots, scrolling through sub-menus, on screen keyboards. There’s a memetic heft to that that becomes a valuable part of a game’s texture to me. Zwei is a game that bafflingly has a very MMO-like UI without many niceties - there’s a scroll bar that is entirely too long and tricky to use, you can’t hold to use or exchange multiple items so every action is another button press. Character interaction is weirdly finicky (an NPC literally walks in front of you while you’re speaking to the food exchanger so you constantly need to adjust to let her through or correct the context sensitive action). I’d get back to the village after a dungeon, bag full of goodies and shit - and crack my knuckles knowing I had a very fidget sensory push toy button few minutes in front of me. “Quality of life” would take all of that away from me lol. ;;;;
Game looks terrible compared to the windows version! Performance, for THIS game, is atrocious. Constant freezes and chugs. Can't possibly recommend it.
A cute game that i really enjoyed.
+ Sprites and environments look nice.
+/- Soundtrack is pretty good. Most of the tunes are catchy, although they're also pretty short. You'll hear the same few measures of the town theme repeated a million times.
+/- The localization is a mixed bag. It seems the translators took a lot of liberties with some things. I have serious doubts that the 2001 Japanese original referenced the 2014 American "don't talk to me or my son" meme. Things like that, and the overall word choices and tone, give the translation a very "in the now" feeling, except "in the now" is already 8 years ago in this case. Your mileage may vary.
- A lot of little frustrations have already started adding up after about 10 hours of play. Gameplay is very fast, by which I mean twitchy. The male MC attacks by lunging forward with all of two frames of animation. It's hard to get used to, and it's hard to line up his attacks sometimes. Sometimes he'll just phase through a boss's hitbox over and over again. Enemies are similarly twitchy. You have almost no time to recover from an attack, so two or three enemies twitching into you at the same time can almost instantly melt your health down to zero. It's especially bad with some of the bosses, who can just walk into you and grind your health down to nothing in seconds. These are problems most developers had solved long before 2001.
- The game works against you. It encourages you to build up combos by attacking enemies in quick succession. This builds up your special attacks, and longer combos mean stronger special attacks. Your attacks will randomly cause enemies to fly into the air. It stuns enemies and allows you to juggle them, but it also breaks your combos.
- You gain levels by eating food dropped by enemies. If you collect ten of a particular food, you can trade it up at the village tavern for better food items. it sounds interesting in theory, but what it does is tie level progression to RNG. Enemies don't always drop food when slain, and the quality of food they drop is based on loot tables. It just makes the level grind much more tedious than it already would be.
I would only recommend this game if you can get it on sale for under $10.00, and even then only if you really, really love janky old games. I might keep pushing through to the end thanks to sunk cost fallacy, but that's not exactly high praise.
calling for Chinese version
This game is 100% a product of its time. I only needed to get into the very first combat to see how basic and repetitive the combat was going to be and likely stay. and boring repetitive combat bores me to tears. the combat sounds being extremely repetitive too didn't help either.
If you don't mind such things, and want to go on the adventure this game presents, go for it.
If you don't mind grindy JRPGs, you may still like this game. The visuals, while basic, are still kinda pretty. Story is generic, but thats sadly par for the course for most JRPGs. for most folks, i recommend skipping this game.
