About the Game

Story

War...
No one knows when or how it started.
In the lands controlled by humans, one fights in the name of peace and justice, one battles for no reason other than to fight, one battles out of greed, to gain more land, and like this, they all faded in the fighting.
The victor edits history to put them in a favorable light, and removes anything that they deem unflattering...
As a result, humanity has lost many things to the wars.
Territory, technology, and their true history...
Now there's not a single country that’s lasted more than 50 years...

Description

Lost Technology is a real-time-strategy (RTS) siege game.
The game is centred around three major phases:
Phase One: Turn-Based War Strategy
Recruit units, and build your army. Find those who will fight for you, command their movements and formation to smoothly prepare to assault your enemy’s territories, or being diplomacy to build peaceful and prosperous relations.
Phase Two: Real-Time Battle
Co-ordinate your army and navigate them through the battle field. With a variety of terrains, attacks and formations, utilize them all to overpower and defeat your enemy.
Phase Three: Story Event
Play through scenarios, each triggered by special events within the game. Your choices and interactions here will affect your strategy and progression.

You must take control of all territories to complete the game.

The World

At a glance, the world of Lost Technology appears to resemble the Middle Ages, as well as a fantasy setting.
However, civilization had once exceeded our current level of scientific advancement.
This drastic difference in advancement is due to the decaying effects of ongoing war. What remains in the game is the world experienced by the player.
Long ago when the realms were undivided, there existed incredibly advanced technology that we could not even imagine.

This technology would be:
"Weaponry", "Ideology", "Appliances", "Theory", "Manufacture", "Speech", "Craft", "Knowledge", "Study" and "Law"...
A wide range of fields that were developed over long periods of history.

However, most of this has now been lost through the endless wars.
The player's mission is to choose a single power and bring an end to the wars, once again creating a world of peace.

Game Structure

  • Turn-Based War Strategy Phase
  • Real-Time Battle Phase
  • Story Event Phase

War Strategy Phase (Turn-Based)

  • Form your squad
Assemble your ideal team of warriors.
  • Attack
Once prepared, move to attack the enemy region.
  • Recruit troops
Recruit standard troops and strengthen your army.
  • Recruit comrades
You can recruit powerful comrades in your region.
  • Diplomacy
Deepen your bonds with those you would rather not fight.

Battle Phase (Real-Time)

  • Move your army into battle.
  • Command your army into various formations.
  • Lead your solders into battle with a variety of attacks.
Many components are automatic, allowing for a good flow and making each engagement short and satisfying.

Event phase

There are various factors which can trigger the event phase.
  • You increased your territory.
  • You befriended a specific comrade.
  • Your territory borders another country.
  • You destroyed another country.
  • You met a certain comrade on the battlefield.
The event will display story text with occasional choices to be made by the player.

Features

  • Over 100 comrade units (generals) with their own beautiful illustrations by Agahari!
  • Carefully chosen music samples, as well as compositions from the legendary Cranky!

The differences between the Japanese and English versions

This is a game has a large amount of story text for each playable faction. Ideally we would like to provide fully localized versions for each respective faction, however, the size and scale of the game meant that a full localization would be extremely difficult to provide all at once, and so only the six factions known as the Reinald Empire, Makan, Álfheim, Kingdom of Gug, Castus and Dragon Knights of Fevnr are included in the English release.
It is possible to start with any of the other playable factions, but story events will not occur and only the simulation part of the game may be played.

The Japanese version still contains the currently available free version, all of the basic functions without changes, and all factions are included in full right off the bat.
(We had to remove some fan content from the build due to the copyright issues though.)
However, it will be distributed as a paid title due to adjustments made specifically for Steam and the addition of trading cards, etc.
We currently plan to look carefully at how this title sells (including sales within Japan) and will proceed with the localization of the remaining factions in accordance with the sales numbers. The remaining factions are set to be distributed as additional DLC in the future. Please stay tuned for more news regarding further details.

With your support, we hope to provide players with Lost Technology in its full glory!

Developer's Voice

- Developer: CB-SXF6
We’ve finally managed to make our way up to release.
We’ve come quite a long way in the two-plus years since PLAYISM first reached out to us on March 16th, 2015.
Lost Technology is an appropriation of a game program called Vahrenturga.
Vahrenturga was the winner of the 2009 game contest held by the major Japanese free game posting site Freem!, and boasts over 200,000 downloads.
I became obsessed with this game and spent an immeasurable amount of time playing it before subsequently becoming obsessed with creating mods, and then finally using the game system to create my own original title.
That title is Lost Technology.
Therefore, this program wasn’t created by our team, and the cooperation of the creator of the original game “Nanaashi”, was absolutely necessary for us to be able to release Lost Technology overseas.
Nanaashi was extremely happy to hear about our plans for an English version, and I myself was a huge fan of Vahrenturga, so I did everything in my power to ensure that this game could be released.
In Japanese, kanji characters can be utilized to shorten all sorts of texts, but that’s not possible in English.
There are some parts in which the text simply could not be made shorter.
Due to this, we often had issues with the game screen requiring tweaking in order to keep all of the necessary text visible and in place. Each time this occurred, Nanaashi helped immensely by accepting our requests for the required tweaks and adjustments. Furthermore, we also had some very serious problems with differences in non-Japanese OS text encoding, and these problems became so serious at one point that we actually came close to giving up on the release altogether.
However, Nanaashi was somehow able to figure out and solve the source of these problems, allowing us to finally bring the game to release. I honestly cannot thank Nanaashi enough.
To all of our overseas players who enjoy Lost Technology:
I would be enthralled if all of you would check out and play Vahrenturga as well since it's game program can be used freely, so as long as you have the various materials in place, you, too, can make your very own original strategy SLG on the same game system.

- "Vahrenturga" developer: Nanaashi
Congratulations on the release of the English version of Lost Technology.
As the creator of the original, I am truly honored to have Vahrenturga used as the base system for this expansive strategy-simulation title featuring beautiful illustrations, music, and voice work.
Thank you very much.

- "Hatoful Boyfriend" developer, and writer for the Kingdom of Gug Scenario: Hato Moa
Congratulations on Lost Technology and the English release of the Kingdom of Gug scenario!
It’s really deeply moving to think that those funky frogs are setting off out into the world.
Since it is, after all, a music-themed scenario, please be sure to check out the awesome original songs, too.
Have fun!

A Japanese total war where you get to control a faction and fight to unite the world under your banner

Pro:
>A really diverse cast of characters, voiced with their own background lore
+
>a solid RTS game with lots of builds/combinations to try out

>a roguelike dungeon mod

Cons:
>Really outdated control scheme lacking basic hotkeys like ctrl+1, 2, 3 to designate armies

>Questionable character maturity or motives
e.g. murder hoboing everyone because the leader likes democracy and women's rights
e.g. a team of archaeologists and treasure hunters waging a total war against the world because they found muskets?

>railroaded "bad ending"
Your victory sometimes have bad implication for the world/faction. And there is nothing you can do about it.

>Final boss/battle involves unassailable floating fortress where 99% of the units in this game cannot even reach.
but you can mod it out

An absolutely incredible game.
There are two distinct aspects of its appeal, which some folks enjoy both of: the story, and the gameplay, each of which is incredible in its own right, though the gameplay/combat isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea.
The gameplay is basically in the style of a total war game, of grand strategy level unit deployment mixed with rts-style fights using those units. However, unlike in the total war series, including the total war warhammer titles, this game's high-fantasy in its combat. This means that, though melee combat and ranged weapons are undoubtedly relevant, it has quite a bit of magic that wipe out large chunks of an army, in the case of an especially high level mage or some other character with a very strong technique. Thus, like with a fair few other moderately old or more indie-ish strategy games, you need to think not just in terms of unit deployment, yet also in the sense of a magical rock-paper-scissors-carbomb-tank.
Unit deployment also is nowhere near as spatially restricted as in the total war series, as redeploying troops for defending on that turn, or to prepare for attacking the following turn, can be across any length of connected territory you own, meaning the grand strategy side of it is less central than in the total war series in some ways. However, as encirclements can occur, wherein a territory with no retreat path is conquered from a faction and causes the retirement of any heroes the other faction had there, in another sense it is even more necessary to pay attention to the particular provinces units are deployed in before hitting the "end turn" button, as well as when planning offensives. Terrain also plays a quite major role in combat, as lizards aren't especially fast in deserts or atop snowy mountains, yet nor are horses especially fast swimmers if combat takes place in a sea and can be slowed down considerably by swampy marshes.
Units, in combat, act using abilities, which you can choose to prioritize the use of or disable if desired. This gives a lot of ability to customize how exactly you want a certain unit to fight, which can be rather necessary in some cases, as, unfortunately, the combat ai doesn't tend to use certain skills unless explicitly told, and at times chooses to use some fairly sub-optimal options. How exactly to read what an ability does also isn't very intuitive at first glance, yet, with time, one can piece together how to decipher what an ability does (though, as a tip in advance for anyone who tries out water magic and comes to the impression basic water mages are quite weak: the bubbles can block some types of projectiles, and can be point-targeted).
On the whole, I quite like this style of gameplay, yet understand it isn't necessarily for everyone, and even may deter some who mainly play strategy games, yet are more used to ones which aim for modest power levels.
The biggest selling point of Lost Technology, though, above the mechanics I quite enjoy, is the story. Each of the factions has incredibly well written characters, who you learn more about not only through their own campaign, yet also by interactions that occur in other factions' campaigns. With time, you get a sense of the world's lore as well, of why exactly there are so many technologies that have, by and large, been lost to time, and why some would prefer they remain as such.
Each of the factions has quite different underlying goals for why they fight as well. Some desire power, others seek to bring about a more peaceful existence for all, some expand their borders out of curiosity or in pursuit of love, and others seek mere survival, whether their own or that of a companion they hold dear. The range between characters and factions can go from quite sombre or tragic, to, in other cases, fairly humorous or lighthearted, all the while still feeling quite in keeping with the world as a whole.
One note of caution, though, is that its saves are local, rather than to the cloud. This only really is of relevance if you leave a campaign unfinished, when each faction's campaign usually can be completed in under 20 hrs fairly easily, often under 10 when one is used to the mechanics, or if going for the rogue-like-esque dungeon crawling mode, which isn't really the main draw of the game in my view.
To conclude, the sheer quality of storytelling could alone justify this game being among the best I have played. Thus, I strongly recommend giving this game a try, especially given its very low price, which gets even lower when it somewhat frequently goes on sale.

This game is an absolute steal at the price point it's sold at. The mix of the turn-based strategy map and real time tactics battles works like Total War, but if you play the story mode (called Prologue in the mode selection) the game goes through a lot of story events, which reminds me of the Nobunaga's Ambition series. However, if you don't like that and would prefer a more sandbox way of playing the game with no events or stories, you can just play Free Mode or Random Scenario. The game is very simple but fun, however I feel like the UI is very confusing and unintuitive and takes some time getting used to. The balance can also feel a bit lopsided, I don't expect perfection but the elf faction feels really weak while the musket and lizardmen factions feel brainlessly simple to play. Still, the variety on display is really good. Not only do you have a good variety of factions, but recruiting heroes from other nations allows you to recruit units from their faction for that commander and best of all there are some heroes that start off neutral that have completely unique recruitment pools.

Incredible action RPG system. Highly recommend for people who enjoy deep and rewarding RPG systems and leveling up characters. I have this as one of my Favorites for sure. Feels like the best memories of an old SNES game.

UI is likely a bit unclear for new players, but I believe there's a sort of tutorial for some of the basics. Besides having to learn a few obscure buttons on the UI, the click-and-drag and pausable real time system is fun and intuitive.

Solid job on the factions and story, feels very much like a Brigandine or Dragon Force style nations vs nations game. But some of the names and story feel slightly awkward due to the translation from Japanese.

If you are into this style of game don't miss out on this gem!

Summary: it is worth buying because of its low price, but don't expect any surprises, and expect a lot of frustration.

I'll start with the negatives: terrible UI and poor visuals. The UI is the biggest problem by far.

Regarding the UI, it's very difficult to click and do what you want to do, to see what you want to see, and to understand what you want to understand. Very frustrating. Even the tutorial was really bad. Just not enough effort into making the user feel comfortable while playing this game.

As for the visuals, the main issue is really just the lack of being able to zoom into things. Everything is just so small, and together with the pixel graphics, it makes it feel quite lazy and difficult to look at.

A third bad thing is that there seems to be only a single map to play this Risk variation game, but the price for the game is low, so that one can be forgiven. Same with being able to walk over the sea.

And the good things: the story is fairly complex and fun, and it is the only thing where this game wins over the usual Risk. The units in the game are fairly varied, too. The artstyle is nice and... that's about all, I think.
