might be one of the best games i played
If you are looking for a real-time naval combat simulator, this is not it. However, if you are like me, and loved to play those tabletop board games like Jutland, Midway, Guadalcanal, or Great War at Sea you are going to love this game. Its basically a move-and-fire routine, with each side taking a turn. It involves a combination of strategy (ship movement) and tactics (weapons aiming & firing). It's a fairly easy interface once you get used to the quirks - it took me a while to figure out how to properly aim & fire multiple torpedoes in one shot, for example. What I enjoy about this game is its simplicity. It makes a nice digital representation of the aforementioned board games. Overall for those that like the graphics of a game like World of Warships, but would rather compete in historical battles against one human or an AI opponent, this game is for you. I especially like how carriers are handled in the game, they can be devastating weapons if you keep them out of enemy gun range! I have not yet played its follow up game, Pacific Fleet, but I've downloaded it and am ready to give it a try.
There are a couple of things in the game I would improve if I were the designer. The mechanism for your angle of fire, which controls your gunnery aiming can be a bit frustrating, it seems to have a "random" selection of +/- 5/10ths of a degree to your shots, even without weather effects, which might be intentional...but the AI controlled ships don't seem to suffer from this problem, once they start hitting you they don't miss very often. Which makes it tricky when you are outnumbered - it took me a while to develop the right strategy for winning the Battle of River Platte as the Graf Spee the trick seemed to be to damage each of the three British ships to a point where their gunnery suffered. I took out the 2 light cruisers first and saved the Exeter for last, I still took heavy damage but won.
The other thing I would fix in the game is that when you choose one weapon to fire, that's it for your turn. It would seem a little more realistic to me to allow targeting of several weapons systems, then hit the "fire" button. If you can launch multiple torpedoes, why not fire your main and secondary turrets at the same time? Otherwise, I very rarely use the secondary weapons, mainly as a "last resort" once the main turrets are all knocked out.
Another feature I'd like to see, which is standard in a lot of other naval combat sims, is more control over repairs. It seems a little useless to be able to bring up a list of all the ship damage but not be able to do anything to direct it, it would be nice if you could select an area to be the focus of repair.
One of the graphics things that seems a little weird is that a ship can have its stern or bow completely submerged but still able to maneuver and fire normally - I don't know, maybe it was intentional "fog of war" sort of thing by the programmers? More of an aesthetic than a play issue.
Overall, its a good, fun game, more of an "arcade" style than a sim.
Fun game to just kinda kill time
Love the combat
Good graphics and fun to play. However, sometimes the maths don't add up, the target gets closer and you need to elevate the guns higher than the previous shot!!
Avoid really large fleet actions, moving and firing a lot of ships can get boring!
It is a mobile mod but still expected a lot better the guide is poor the difficulty is impossible to the point of un-playble on the campaign as somebody with a deep knowledge of the royal navy and the atlantic war was looking for something to wet my whistle and i wasted 4 hours try to understand it but some of the weapons and ship are over powered to the extreme and the overall balance of the game is flawed, a simple withdraw option when in campaign would have been easy and better when you have clear mis-matches or a lack of vessels. could be a good game but to be honest its very poor
The game suffers from a bit of wehraboo.
As a turn based combat game in and of its self it is fine. Competently made and everything.
But the actual statistics used for the ships are very suspect and universally favour the Kriegsmarine. You have things like (as one example amongst many) the German battleships universally getting an additional 5" or so of belt armour and such, which naturally means they are much tougher to sink than they should be.
The only reason I can think of that would explain it is that the devs wanted the German ships to be arbitrarily more powerful, which is ahistorical for a game which is supposedly caring about historicity. If you desire a game that reflects the ships of the Atlantic Theatre as accurately as a turn based game can (as i did) then this game is not to be recommended.
It just needs more experimental ships you can buy. Both sisdes should have an equal chance of victory.
Easy to understand tactical naval warfare game. Enough ship handling and gun laying to make it realistic and challenging, but not so much that you feel like you need to go to Annapolis before playing.
NOT an arcade style game, more tactical ship-handling involved.
I've certainly enjoyed it.
very good
t
Simple game based on historic encounters. Well done.
a fun game.a bit simplistic but enjoyable explosions.
Awesome game. Easy controls
I've wasted many hours of time on the mobile version of this game, specifically Google Play.
This game is a classic of mobile variety, and has aged some. While aged, it's a nice little turn based strategy game, and the graphics aren't too bad, certainly better than the mobile version as one would hope. I would catch this little game on sale, as frankly I did, and I think the price of about $5 is rather fair for the game. Although I would encourage you to look at the other projects by Killerfish games or adjacent to them, like War on the Sea (in the Pacific), or if you'd like a more cold war era naval game, Cold Waters and the upcoming Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age, the former a great submarine game with a good modding scene, and the latter an upcoming game from some folks who worked at Killerfish are great options. Essentially, this company is good to follow for naval games, and this is one of them, even if it is somewhat limited by it's mobile origin. As a WW2 Atlantic turn based experience I have trouble coming up with anything that even roughly competes.
