Where do I get a manual for the games associated with this download? I didn't see a manual download button on the sales page, and every time I tried to search for and download the manual from the web browser, I was told that there was a malware risk associated with downloading it. Thanks.
I have purchased all of totem games. they are truly unique in subject matter that no one else has dared to tackle. I enjoyed dynamics and gameplay mode as they have set it up.! The graphics are the best available for this era. If you enjoy modding your ship, that is, to a limited degree, possible too. You can add to the models, or deletetoo, but the texturing must be to the same model texture. Also, textures can be modded very easily. If you enjoy nautical and accurate games, This is a good one for you! 9.9 out of 10.
+The game is a major improvement over the average IRONCLAD game and dlc.
+The game turned into an actural strategy game rather than just tactical, you have to plan stuff several turns ahead now.
+The game puts a lot of focus on manouvers in line formations, which is a great improvement over the original.
+/-The game does a partly good job with the new and improved Damage Control System. But it is lacking in some aspects. See details below.
+/-The game is oddly catchy... I want to play more of it, but it's just so... unpolished or broken I never bother to play more than a battle or 2 at a time.
-The game is not very userfriendly. (the manual is good however)
-The game has old school and impractical controls, all camera movement is limited to the mouse.
-The original Ironclad games had better steering and speed control. This one is just Hard to Port/Startboard or steady as she goes.
-It inherites some/many of the flaws of the old games and some are made worse.
-The map interface is akward. Also the game lacks an ingame tutorial "this is war, good luck" (the manual is good however)
-Although ramming is a thing according to the manual, the result of ramming is little more than earrape.
-The game includes "time of day" as a thing, but it does not include weather (as far as I have seen)
-The mecanics of the games rarely work. (check below)
-The soundeffect are lazy. There are many diffrent types of naval artillery and ships in the game, but they use the same sounds for eveything. There is only one "splash", one impact and I've only heard one type of gun sound effect... This is made worse with the game only playing one track doing battle for 1½ hours average.
-The turn system is nothing but silly, you send a ship to go 1v1 but then puff the enemy has 3 more ships joining in or running away (cowards...)
-Troops can move across the entire country in 1 turn... that's a march of nothing less but 1100mils +logistics, by train of the era, that would take 5 days straight with NO stops and along the coast line, ground units should move from city to city.
-The H.L. Hunley plays no role in the game.
It would be an interesting idea to deploy a mothership which could attack ships in port from a blockage position without a naval battle taking place.
-Adjusting the settings will FÜCK up the game (mouse disappears) on both of my computers.
-if you pound a lonely enemy ship, the enemy will run off scared and the battle ends... you'll be denied the pleasure of sinking them or even better, capture them.
*over 3 attempted games.
*The first naval battle run smooth with seemingly everything working as it should. While the next battle always has atleast one maulfunction.
*The enemy ships either cannot be hit or take no damage on impact.
*I have chased an enemy ship around for 1 hour and 20 minutes at close range with more than 140 shells flying at her with over 24% accuracy, not a single shell hit... the odds of that are (2.06 e-17)%
*I have often encountered the enemy flagship takes 0 damage on impact. I have had 3 ships pounding the USS Buffalo (armed steamer), one at less than 100 meters with all shell types, no damage from SB 64 pdr. guns over the span of an hour...
*If your shell counter reaches 0 on any shell type, the guns on the ship will maulfunction as well as in any other vessel in the following battles that turn, changing your shell type will NOT make your guns use onboard shell while they still fire. No splash, no impact, no damage... You are Salouting the enemy vessels in the middle of a battle while they are throwing very REAL ordinance at your vessels.
*The game often needs to be reinstalled to work properly. It just loads, and loads, and loads and loads... open my Focking save already! I have americans to kill with their own guns.
*I have seen my ships fire what I can only descripe as a Vortex at enemy vessels... I presume it's just a glitch in the animation as it seems like my ship frie cannons, fireballs, people and even other ships at the enemy... very interesting glitch
okay first I was mugged in 2004 suffering a head tramua that gives problems in SP and grammar so excuse this still smart just messed up writing .
I only played about 6 hours but enough to know /learn few things. the game is simple once you learn what to do. I went to Youtube viewed a video someone posted as their is no Tutorial. I see is made by small Russian group. not a big fancy company so do not expect bunch bells and whistles. You need to pay attention to the ship types and dates . remember you are stopping ships from getting to port or leaving . I made big ships taking to long to make and lost early on . next i made small ones trying to stop them at the coast nope so a good way is a mix of ships when damaged pull them back for refits takes less money and time then new builds.
I got the game on a big sale for like 3 bucks so if did not like it was no great loss. I find once you figure out a build pattern best place for type of ships to be in the game it is a nice simple game .
I did a bunch of auto battles and every time I did lost more then doing it myself playing the battle. or took less damage so play the battles , they are nothing great graphic wise but do have clean crisp viewing. I found that you need to run straight 1/2 way through turns to keep speed up then finish the turn even with steamers you want keep a eye on speed . also make sure to check the ammo you are using or can.
once you learn the game workings it has some nice promise for a few buck game do not expect a lot from it enjoy it for what it is and you will enjoy a game that will bring you some great time kill hours

This game has a major problem which none of the other reviews are addressing and I feel it is of the upmost importance that you are aware of this before you purchase any Ironclad title:
This is NOT a conventional video game, it's closer to a digital table top game. I would argue it is a digital Board game. Adjust your expectations accordingly.
From the bare bones combat controles to the lack of user interface, the games reliance on RN-Jesus and the lack of general audio visual feedback Ironclad Civil war can be a daunting challenge and I almost refunded the title.
However there is easily available PDF instructional manual you can download. I not only did this but I have the damn thing printed and sat on my desk at the time of writing this. Once you read the manual the game is not only playable but there is a surprising amount of depth to be found. Just be aware that there are no in game tutorials to help you.
As for the gameplay, its split into two components:
A very basic turned based economic and strategic system where you can move Naval and Ground assets between ports via shipping lanes providing that the pre-determined shipping lanes have not been blockaded by your opponent. This aspect of the experience is based around the correct use of blockades, economic management (You gain a set amount of resources per term depending on how many ports you own and your ability to intercept, capture or evade blockade runners.) and time management.
Each turn is a month of in game time and the construction of new ships or the training of soldiers is realistic. You want a new Ironclad? Wait 8-12 Months, also note that if your port is captured the construction project goes poof. All the money you sank into the endeavour is forfeit and you can very easily destroy your entire in game economy and make the game unwinnable in a single turn.
The second half is the real time naval combat. This takes on average an hour of real time to complete (seriously) and will often end in stalemates unless you have numerical superiority or you micro manage your flotilla.
The combat is in real time but everything is controlled via the mouse- you click on onscreen buttons which can control either your entire flotilla or individual ship. You can have up to 8 ships per flotilla with no limitations of fleet composition. I ran a 3 Ironclad strong Confederate flotilla against a Union blockade of 4 Steamers and 2 Monitor Ironclads and I came out victorious, sinking two ships and crippling an opposing ironclad- Then the game crashed but more on that later.
Due to the fact you control the game with the mouse attempting to play the combat in real time (Or god help you, on a faster speed) is impossible. You will need to slow the game down, you will need to pause, set commands per ship and then hit play. The combat may be real time but due to the lack of intuitive controls you need to play this as a turned based system.
That being said, if you are willing to micro a single ship then I cannot even begin to describe how satisfying it is to spend 5 minutes carefully orchestrating course corrections to successfully conduct a ram. Or how insane it can be to successfully ram an opponent’s ship from both the Port and Starboard at the same time.
Ships health pools are broken down into sections. Port, Starboard, Bow and aft. The more one side if damaged the more of your overall health is lost so manoeuvring to ensure your strongest armour is always facing the enemy is important. Guns can be controlled by manual fire, automatic fire (which can be pre-set to volley fire, broadside, individual opportunistic fire etc) or you can control each cannon individually. I don’t know how the latter is possible with the limited control scheme but the depths is there.
You also can auto-resolve the battles but the games hard-line approach to realism will ultimately decide on who the winner will be. Armour thickness, speed, rate of fire. The Random Number gods will play a part but if on paper your flotilla seems unable to defeat your opponent odds are you will either take considerable causalities or even lose your entire force.
The auto-resolve battles do not take into considerations advance tactics. It’s a rock paper scissors game.
If you have the time you should always take manual control of a battle. Just remember that it takes about an hour to complete the combat and there is a reason why my personal playtime is so low. I burnt out after my second battle which hit the hour 20 mark due to my abuse of the pause button, referring to the manual and time dilation.
Historical accuracy is the name of the game:
At its height the Confederate Navy only operated with 7 thousand active sailors, the game reflect this. You will be trapped in a defensive war with an overwhelming superior opponent. Your victory conditions is that you merely hold onto your ports. You can be aggressive and challenge the Union but the game does will not provide you with an easy route to this path. Welcome to hell.
The Union held control of all of America’s Naval forces after the Souths succession and once war was declared they used their Naval superiority to blockade supply lines and eventually bombard costal targets and invade ports. You will start out with 3x the ships as the Confederacy, you will construct ships faster and your objective of taking the CSA’s ports is easily accomplishable even in the early game. The Union is Easy mode.
Final notes:
The game is bugged to shit.
I don’t even think it runs on an engine, rather it’s a executable file infused with Russian Black magic and Vodka.
If you tab out of the game. It will crash, If you click outside of the game (Dual monitors) it will crash. If you minimise the game during the combat portion there is a very high chance it will crash.
The turn based management and the real time combat are two different instances. The game has to close one to open the other and even after I had successfully completed a daring assault on the Union Blocade and freed a shipping lane for my Blocade runners… The game closed down the Real time instant and failed to re-open the turned based. Because I minimised the game, meaning I could not save. Nor would the autosave initiate as it is bound to the turned based instance only.
This game will crash if you do ANYTHING to anger it. But at the same time it’s completely stable if you just play it and attempt nothing else. She’s a cruel mistress.
Would I recommend the game?
I’m a civil war buff with a particular fascination with the Naval conflicts. I’m planning to visit both the USS Cairo & the replica CSS Neuse II one day despite being a Europoor.
This game can be a fascinating eye opener to the struggles faced by both sides, the South’s underdog, relentless resistance to the North aggression and the North’s unexpected struggles against the numerically inferior yet unpredictably resilient foe.
Just note that I used the term ‘can be’
If I didn’t hold such an interest there would be no chance in hell could I recommend this title. The lack of user interface, competent controls, the crashing and lack of tutorials make this a very hard sell.
But if you take the time to read the manual there is a very good game hidden beneath the surface. The combat is challenging and yet you can overcome overwhelming odds through strategy if you take the time to learn just how to control the units.
It’s a very good digital boardgame and due to its unique setting I can’t help but endorse it.
This is the only Historically accurate Naval focused American Civil War game out there, and that makes it the best one by default. Just be aware of what you are buying and adjust your expectations accordingly.
If you are into this era, definitely get this! It is a bit complex at first as there is no in-game tutorial, however the game does have a nice manual and there are plenty of helpful players on the forum that would be more happy to help you out. It is a bit basic in its functions, however it is a big step up over their other games. Ships, while simple in graphics are still beautifully modeled and in all delivers a great Civil War naval experience.
This game is an enigma. It has some nice aspects to it, mostly that it allows you to experience a watershed moment in naval warfare. Yet it is very limited and certainly not worth the 19.99 dollars that I read was the original price. Lucky for me I paid a trifle for it.
Basically the game is a battle simulator for up to eight warships on both sides and those are limited to two columns. This feature is at the heart of the game and the most developed. However for any experienced naval gamer the lure of options that the game seems to provide does not pay off. Most do not seem to work. And to top it: the AI is pretty stupid.
These sea battles are tied together by a strategic part of the game. This involves you in conquering ports and blocking or breaking blockades, depending on the side you pick.
The ai gets a big advantage: it goes second after you assigned your forces on a map that shows all commitments. In that way it is sure to get drop on you.
The game is buggy. At some point I was unable to create infantry for totally unknown reason. Luckily quitting the game and reloading solved that. But not so nice was a crash after winning an important sea battle. I had to redo it. More issues cropped up. Be sure to save often.
The stragic game is pretty locked down and historically totally unrealistic. The CSN gets about 2/3 of the USN production, which is nonsense given the strategic advantage of the USN. But this game has to give the Confederates at least a sporting chance and does so by limiting the federal production, giving the confederates an ironclad way before the federals get one and the limiting the federals by the slow production of ironclads. Making a monitor cost about 16 turns in a 48 turns game and you need to get enough money to get it which means about 20 turns from the start you get to your first one. The USN has to hold out against CSN ironclads for like 12 turns. Yeah, Hampton Roads will never occur in this game.
Some ships are totally pointless, like the steam frigate. Immensily expensive(1 million dollars) and with a massive production time, by the time you can field it, the war is almost over.
Game in practice is fought out with a handful of monitors and infantry. Once you know the drill you know the game. Limited, buggy and too expensive: a thumbs down.

i thought i was buying a simulator set in an alternative history where the battles may have been won by the south or regular history by the north, the battles are nothing like the trailer showed them to be, i got all the ironclad 2 games on sale because they were dirt cheap.......... now i know why.
there is no tutorial. no real training. prices for ship are outrageous. you start with little to no money. i uninstalled the game today because i just cant play
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME
I love Civil War games, but not this one.
There is no tutorial and the game play is not intuitive.
I love alternative history. In this scenario serious work with historical documents is visible. It was pleasant to me that developers invented nothing.
Game very needs the mode of training or the training video. I do not like to read manuals. Surprisingly in a game very simple interface in the strategic mode. To occupy the enemy city it is necessary to drag the infantry there. Movements happen simply. We choose any unit and we click where to move it. If on the way of unit there are no enemies, then it will move.
It is not worse than battle of the warships than in other games (Total War, Age of Sail, Distant Guns).
unhistorical. difficult to understand strategic level quirky interface. unrealistic combat.
If there was ever a game that deserved the “buy it if you like the genre” rating, this is it. Seriously, you should buy Ironclads if you like the genre, and people who are only slightly interested in the game should probably look elsewhere.
Ironclads is a very realistic approach to naval combat in the middle 19th century, a time period that has gotten almost no coverage. Ironclads definitely does not serve as an introduction to naval combat strategy simulations. Instead, it’s one of the best games of that genre available and intended for veteran players and people who are serious about their naval operations. The realism means that Ironclads doesn’t have the wide appeal like some other games and I can’t recommend it to everyone, but it does fit its niche very well and fans of the genre will not be disappointed.
The only problem of this game is lack of training. In the first hour of a game nothing is clear. It is interesting to play on the strategic map. To operate battles of the warships long and boringly. However I do not regret that I bought this game.
There is no online tutorial for this game. The game play is virtually non-existant. The music is irritating (to be polite).
Wish I could get my money back, Steam should be ashamed for allowing such tripe on their servers.

I agree with the opinion of the absolute majority. This is an unusual game. This is a good wargame. The game has a lot of potential. I prefer board games. This game is similar to them. I played a little bit, but enjoyed.
As a game though this is a very good one, one that anyone interested in naval warfare should look at.
If you are even remotely interested in naval warfare from the great age of the gun then this is a very good game to check out. The game isn’t perfect, the interface can be frustrating to newbies but the game is fun, and engrossing.
The game is not a fast paced game. Yes, you can speed up the time in the game, in fact, you will have to if you want to play the game at all, but even so this is a slow paced game and the action fulfils itself over time. If you want a quick bang bang style game then this isn’t it. The ships of the time were notoriously inaccurate in their firing and in this game it is evident. You will fire hundreds of shots at an enemy ship before you will finally sink it. Yes, there may be a lucky shot but don’t count on it.
In the end I recommend the game.
Thanks to the developers for a fun, fun game. There is lots of depth to be found under the initial apparent simplicity of this game - don't run off because some have spent little time on it, then trashed it. Buy it!
Ironclads 2 is very easily moddable. All files are in plain text .xml. I've done a lot of game modding and 3rd party software for games over the years. This one is built on the same chassis as Pacific Storm + Pacific Storm Allies. You can change ANYTHING, including the game interface.
I've already modded and upgraded the camera angles, font colors to make them more readable to my old eyes, fixed the issue with the non-working ESC (escape) key. I'm playing with the battle map interface right now. Much more can be done.
Victorian Admirals, also by Totem Games (though a simple battle interface) and the other naval games in the developers kit bag are built on the same chassis too, and highly moddable. I picked up Victorian Admirals for the cheap, cheap price of $2.99 yesterday.
Thanks for opening up this game.

good game, good game speed, entertaining, interface is better than ironclads 1 but still need some improvements.
not a bad game at all
Well with some new games you start it all seems quite instinitive and everything seems to fall into place even with quite complicated games..Unfortuneatly for me at least Ironclads2 American civil war isn't one that does.No tutorial doesn't help either and even after reading the manual its all rather difficult and frankly a bit of an odd setup. But it looks good and I think the concept of naval operations during this period is worth having a bit of a fiddle. The ships look good, but controlling them is not as easy as in Shogun2 Fall of the Samurai however there are many options of things to make and courses of action to follow. In the very short time I have played there have been no bugs or glitches. So if you like the period I think this maybe a useful addition to combined ops in the US civil war.Give it a try....
