I wanted this game to be endearing, but it ended up more so annoying. The artwork is grotesquely misproportioned. The dialog is overly long and often unnecessarily duplicative. The voice acting for the protagonist os awkwardly stilted—this may have been an unfortunately intentional choice to try to make him seem clueless, but I found it grating. Most of the action is a long, boring series of fetch quests. At times, the game tells you exactly what to do, even if it's obvious; at others, the game provides very little clue what the puzzle to be solved even is. And toward the end, the game loses cohesion, as if the developers were sloppily rushing to finish.
Good game overall, however, a guide is recommended, since it's super easy to get stuck (like most of the point & click). A special compliment to the art direction, really beautiful.
Very good story, nice graphics, music and funny :-)
A great game with a beautiful and unique story. The most unique thing in this game is the fact that you can talk with other animals, plants or even things. In my opinion, it's a combination of kind horror, cuteness and a humorous comic book.
The puzzles of the game are not too easy or difficult, but just fine. Perfect levels to give this game a challenging feeling without get stuck for too long. The most important thing you have to do in this game is have eyes for small details...
Simple, but beautiful music in this game.
One of the best point & click adventure games I have played in a long time...
I liked this game up until the end when the puzzles got ridiculous and involved backtracking to locations I was done with and items that I didn't think I needed any longer. It ticked me off to the point I used a walkthrough continuously just so I could finish the freaking thing. Not fun.
I hesitantly recommend this because the game was fun and the puzzles were mostly solvable up to that point.
Incredible annoying and extremely slow, you have to listen to the characters say the same things again and again and again. No relevant help in game, only for someone who has no life...
pros
+ gorgeous looking, colorful and detailed hand drawn background artwork and character models
+ Danny Elfman style great background musics fits the tone of the game very well
+ puzzles and mini games are various and mostly enjoyable. they are not so easy or difficult. there are also inventory puzzles you can combine some items
+ diverse cast of fun and engaging characters
+ religious-themed story witty and enjoyable
+ when you press to space, hotspots highlighted so no need to pixel hunting
+ there are two playable characters
+ there is a map for fast travel
+ there are steam achievements
+ there is auto save
cons
- voice acting hit and miss
- some stiff character animations
- there is an hint system but it's not helpful
- there are some puzzles with nonsensical solutions
- game doesn't drop cards
Overal this is an good quality and enjoyable puzzle adventure game. i like it.
Good, not great.
It's specifics:
- Visually superb.
- Fully voiced, perfectly subtitled.
- Verbose, yet not annoying; instead it's rather charming.
- The humour is German, and this game is the historical source of this horrible stereotype, i.e., it's not funny.
- The story is interesting enough. It's about a bunch of angels (from the Christu mythos) being mean to everyone and to each other, one of them relentlessly using a mouse as a slave.
- The puzzles are often rather weak and abstruse. Sometimes things that cannot possibly work actually work, while things that would make sense fail with no explanation, a pitfall that better games avoid.
- What is most lacking is feedback on interactions, instead of the constant dryness of "That won't work."
- The interface has everything the genre needs: a full-featured save system, a hot spots key, a reminder of current tasks, a very welcome map for fast travel...
- All interaction icons are shifted above their interactive actors. No idea why. You get used to it after a while, but it remains odd and pointless.
All in all, I liked the game.
Just not every single minute of it.
I really don't know why so many people complain about the voice acting, I thought it was great. To me it was a character choice and made sense that Talorel would have slightly stunted speech and not talk normally because..well he's an angel and he is learning everything for the first time, so it was comical and appropriate to me. I was charmed by the game it reminded me of Memoria and Book of unwritten tales. I enjoyed the art style and I found all the characters delightful. I was impressed with having as many locations as this game had and having a map for fast travel is a very much welcome feature. I liked the in game hint system though sometimes it wasn't especially helpful because I needed to know how to get something specific and they just tell me the main goal again, but I very much appreciate an in game hint system that doesn't break up the story. I hope this developer continues and I would glady support them to make more games like this. I loved it!
I wish I had liked this game. The art is nice and the concept of the story is really intriguing. Nonetheless, the main character is annoying and it's more tedious than it needs to be.
Pros - Voice acting is......acceptable.....some is quite good, whereas some is flat, uninspiring and borderline painful to sit through. The problem is that the worst offender of the lot in terms of bland, emotionless script reading is the main character. So, this is actually also going to be a con
Graphics - Pretty decent, not awe-inspiring, but certainly not eye-gougingly bad either.
Gameplay - Decent......bog-standard point and click adventure stuff with a few added wrinkles (the mouse, the homunculus), none of which serve to raise the game above the hopelessly average. Ooh, and there's a fast-map, as well as the ability to double click on locational hot-spots and be instantly transported to the appropriate location. So that's good.
Cons - Dialogue: It's not the actual dialogue per se (although it is pretty banal), but the sheer repetition of lines over and over and over again, not to mention that characters will tell you what you just did (at length) as if you weren't playing the game just seconds ago before they chimed in. And sometimes you will even reply back to them and repeat it all over again! And there is just SO MUCH unnecessary verbiage....so very very much! Pro tip (that I wish I had figured out prior to 5 hours in or so....): After mashing the space bar, the enter key, the left mouse button, the escape key, etc etc time and time again trying to escape the tedious, repetitious, redundant effluvia of the game's dialogue, I eventually realized that a RIGHT mouse button click will (usually, but not always) allow you to skip dialogue. It will save your sanity!
Voice acting: Lead character is annoying and flat, and talks SO bloody much.
Gameplay: Too many outer-space, galaxy-brain point and click game solutions (many solutions do make sense, but far too many will have you scrambling for a walkthrough and yelling, "This??!?! This is the bloody solution?!?!")
So, ultimately, with almost everything about it being average and too many minor annoyances to just shrug off, I'm afraid I can't recommend Heaven's Hope. There are better ways to spend your time and money (unless you're desperate, in which case wait for a deep, DEEP sale) than this middling and oft times downright irritating "adventure" game.
Let's say there are things that possibly could be more polished but overall it is a great game and I had a lot of fun with it. Also I played it with English sound and German subtitles so I wouldn't miss a joke or anything and in my opinion you did a very good job here!
I really love point and click games, this one just falls flat however. The voice acting is atrocious, espcially the main character. The animation is either hit or miss, some of the puzzles are far too easy or make no sense. There is far, far too much dull dialog. This game just wasn't fun. I played right to the end as i wanted to see where is was going, it was a slog to get through
Heaven's Hope has everything required for a good adventure game: nice animations & backgrounds, constant attempt at humour, slow-paced gameplay, a good number of puzzles with solutions which make no sense and lots of guesswork & trial & error.
The experience of Heaven's Hope starts out very promising, art style and the uncommon plot immediately catches your attention. You visit new places, meet new people and collect everything you can. Sooner or later you reach a point where you end up with a lot of items and no idea what you're missing. There is a hint system in the game but in my gameplay the advice given was rarely relevant to what I needed to move forward. So you start revisiting everywhere and everyone and you realize that the game relies upon trigger events as the solution of story progression problem, something I didn't particularly enjoy. Fast travelling using the map eases this pain which negatively impacts your overall experience throughout the game and searching for the next interaction can be boring.
In every adventure game, there is this specific point where you start to lose interest in the middle of the story. After that, Heaven's Hope manages to pick up speed and wraps up the storyline without dragging it too much in about 7 hours in total. I recommend Heaven's Hope to every adventure gamer, it's better than most of the recent point & click alternatives and a better than average game in general. Also, it was a nice change to play a game with a religious theme which doesn't constantly try to lecture the player on how ridiculous and horrible religion is. I hope the developers build up on this and we'll see more from them in the future.
A respectable adventure game. Good puzzles, and a built-in hint system that works fairly well. It is helpful to know a bit about Christianity as the game does use some Christian themes in it. Someone devout might be put out by the angels gossiping about the saints and behaving closer to imperfect teenagers than divine messengers (more like the Greek gods than the normal depiction of the Christian one). The humor is subtle - if you like deadpan humor you'll have fun with it, but if you prefer zany/outrageous it may not be to taste.
My main complaint is the graphics aren't terribly impressive. The animation looks a bit like cardboard cut-outs moving in front of a background -- a bad bluescreen effect (the first video kind of shows that).
There's really no saving grace for this game. It is booooring on so many levels that it is only through a sheer force of will that one can finish it. Short version? Don't buy it. Not even on sale. Not even for $2.
Cons:
* Triggers: The worst is triggers: practically everything in this game is triggered. There are multiple locations, items and characters that you can interact with only after something arbitrary has happened. But there's no way to tell! So you can go into the tavern for 90% of the game, and have nothing to do there until arbitrary trigger. But since there's no way to know something has changed you can go around for hours not realizing that.
This game is not so much hard as it is simply *tedious*.
* Puzzles that are boring and have absolutely nothing with the plot or the game
* Boring characters, boring plot
* Monotonous, repetative responses. There was zero effort to make the character reply to what you are trying to do. After a while "I don't know what to do with that" for pretty much anything gets super-annoying
Just no.
A fun little adventure game. Talorel, the fallen angel, is a sympathetic protagonist. The concepts for the various puzzles were good, but the implementation could stand some improvement. German voice acting was mostly good, the subtitles had minor bugs. Overall, I liked this game.
A very enjoyable point and click adventure with beautiful scenes, interesting characters, great voice over and good puzzles. Not on the easy side, but not frustratingly difficult either. I loved playing this game.
Took a while to get how to do things and was just getting into it when I found out the designer must be a Monty Python fan cos no one expects the Inquesition whose two things are Fear and Surprise ...its three things are..........
Anyway an enjoyable game
I`m two hours into the game and my first look so far is quite positiv
+great visuals
+good voice acting (german and english are both of good quality)
+story is interesting (hope this will last over the whole game /edit after 6 hours: still good)
+Charming dialogues
+Fast travel to any location possible!
-animations are choppy
-Puzzles are relatively easy until now, dunno how hard it will get later on (edit after 6 hours: the puzzles are getting more complex, but still the adventure typical "have item A in place B to get item C" etc., some fresh approach would be more attractive in my opinion)
If you are interested in some gameplay footage, I will provide a full walkthrough over the next couple of days here:
https://youtu.be/SP0B0uePHG8
EDIT: I am most likely in the middle of the game right now and the length should be between 10 and 15 hours. If you are using guides like my walkthrough and cut down dialogues you will obvious run through the game much faster and can beat it in 5 to 6 hours I would guess.
