Trigonarium Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

Trigonarium is a fast-paced twin-stick shooter that will seriously test your reflexes and strategy. The neon aesthetic and energetic soundtrack create an immersive atmosphere while you face endless waves of enemies. It's easy to pick up but hard to master—perfect for players who love fast action and intense battles. The variety of weapons and power-ups keep things fresh, and the boss fights are both challenging and rewarding.

I know what you're thinking, it's less than a dollar, how good can it be? Trigonarium is a good example of don't judge a book by its cover (or price).

I have very picky taste and analyze games on a more scrutinizing level, but I was pleasantry surprised with this 50 cent twin stick. Despite the 50 cent look of the game and lack of reviews, this dev seems to really know what he's doing gameplay wise. And no surprise, apparently this is made by an ex-Housemarque (Returnal) dev!

PLUSES:

-The game avoids many common issues for twin sticks like geometry wars, where the game eventually devolves into a bomb spam life farming loop. The game holds up at more advanced level play and plays more like a quicker robotron than geometry wars. There are more static enemies than in geometry wars, and combined with the more complex enemy patterns, the player can't just circle strafe around enemy waves but is forced to adapt and move in more compex and skillful patterns.

-The dash mechanic is not just defensive but attacks enemies and then gives the player a beefy amount of invulnerable frames at the end of it, affording the player strong enough base power to allow the enemy patterns to be juiced up more without feeling unfair. The movement feels adequate enough to dodge things as well as adapt on the fly; many other games in this genre don't give the player enough movement speed which forces the player either to predict where enemies will be or get locked into checkmate losing scenarios. This game focuses more on pure twin stick skill of dodging and shooting.

-The arena constantly changes and it's done well.

-Even though shooting power starts off a bit weak in the default mode (pea shooter syndrome) there is an "ultimate" campaign that juices the game up and starts the player off with a stronger starting shot speed for those who want a more fast paced "japanese" type gameplay and skip right to the intense gameplay. Similarly, some modes like "challenge classic" consist of being on a very large arena, and the dev intelligently gives the player a fast and strong triple shot on it at the start to accommodate the large play space, which again shows the dev is attentive to these little details that are important, where many other devs would not even think to do such. Your gun can also be upgraded through collecting the orbs in a typical fashion, and your shot power remains until you lose, another good choice.

-There are also a healthy amount of additional modes to keep you going. They shake up the gameplay in intelligent ways which is not always the case with additional modes in arcade games.

-The arcade mode lasts just the right amount of time. No 3+ hour campaign here, it's over quickly which inspires replaying runs which is what an arcade game should do. After beating a level, you jump immediately to the next; no menus breaking up the flow. The dev understands arcade design and has avoided most of the common issues with modern arcade games.

CRITICISMS:

-The visuals need to change more from level to level; it has been researched that arcade players actually feel a stronger sense of progression in an arcade game when the graphics and or colors change more from stage to stage as opposed to actual gameplay changes. The stages do offer new enemy types, but the lack of visual change does diminish psychologically the overall sense of progression.

-The bosses are undercooked. They aren't poorly designed, just too easy. Also some of them kind of repeat in design concept too much.

CONCLUSION:

This isn't just a good game for the 50 cents, it's a good game regardless of its cost. I really look forward to Sektori, because it seems to be more of the same but the visuals/sound are beefed up for a better audiovisual experience. With random 50 cent games like this, you don't buy it really expecting to be more than a 50 cent experience, and it certainly doesn't look like it will be much from the cheap visuals, but it just shows that there are these devs out there tied to prestigious companies like Housemarque doing there own thing, showing off their talent, meanwhile getting overlooked. It's not a masterpiece, but it's certainly worth more than 50 cents and demonstrates better game design talent than other similar games.

I've made it my life's mission to give a negative review for making me unplug my speakers to avoid hearing damage. Let's try setting the volume of the random song that plays when launching the game to about 50% instead of 500%, may we ?

Excellent twin stick (geometry wars-like) shooter that hides under the radar. Has excellent game feel and stays frenetic. Not a fan of the boss fights.

This is a pretty great but small twin stick shooter, made by a developer that I'm a fan of and who has made a lot of other niche but unique and fun games you should check out.

The gist of this is a sort of level based twin stick shooter, featuring a couple of interesting mechanics like being able to perform a charge dash and constantly transforming levels. It's one of those games that, if you get into it, constantly tempts you to come back and try to beat your high score (which is made more interesting by the temporary multiplier, you have to put a lot of thought into keeping enemies alive, much more than any other game of this type I've played).

The art style is great, very trippy and psychedelic while still being very readable. The additional gamemodes are okay, but could be done better, and the bosses are repetitive. But have some nice designs and the few attacks they do have are fun.

For the price it's basically a steal, if you're into twin sticks you don't really have a reason not to check this out. I'm looking forward to Sektori and whatever is made after that!

It's a nice simple arcade game. The 2 player mode works fine. They have plenty of different modes although I can't really tell the difference.

definitely worth the £2 it costs, have maybe 4 hours played, (offline so it doesnt show up here)

lets face it, this is a geometry wars clone, but its slower pace, dash move, and confined, shifting levels give it a little something different. The music is nice, and i rather enjoy the pastel colours and the very slow nature of your "pew pew gun" and the fact that there's no smart bombs.

Its a crying shame steam or pc never got geometry wars 2, but my recommendation is get bot GW3 and trigonarium. Hell Even get GW1: retro evolved for the pittance that trigoranirium and GW1: RE go for.

Bargain at the price, and a nice change of pace from Geometry wars

I like twin-stick shooters, and I worried that TerminatorXPunisher might have ruined me for Twin Stick Shooters because IMO it is one of the best ever made and I still play it after 200 hours game time... I worried that another Twin Stick might not hold my interest. But NO, turns out that fear was wrong!!! This game is crazy fun and has a lot of nuance to it, and I'm instantly hooked. I played alnost 4 hours straight from the second I picked it up.

I got it for 80% off, I feel like I totally ripped the developer off. I would happily have paid full asking price for this. The mechanics are rock-FRICKING solid, my people. The sounds are beefy, the music is rocking, the color scheme and sprites are perfect for this kind of game, the enemy variety and different movement patterns and traits are mind-blowing. And they are so beautifully balanced. I love it and can't wait to play the ever-loving FRICK out of it.

I like saying FRICK.

Plays very similar to Geometry wars, so basically your standard twin stick shooter high score attack.

I'm not really a fan of the "in-the-zone" ("this game needs meth to complete") kind of gameplay, but I found this to be somewhat more relaxed and also has more content (modes, levels, bosses) than for example geometry wars or say super hexagon - which is not a twin stick shooter, but you know the type: frantic, requires high concentration, survive as long as you can then die and start all over.

A red flag is that the game is easier and slower on older hardware (framerate based logic?), which I believe to be a sign of bad implementation.

The achievements seems to be well balanced and I might continue to hunt them down (at about 40% now).

I guess a thumbs up is in place. It's not great, but I have come back for more several times now over a few weeks. No longer play sessions mind you, but it's easy to pick up and go. With my wallet this game is not worth more than $5.

Slick and responsive twin-stick shooter with a bright, colorful, and psychedelic visual style and a very intuitive and addictive dashing mechanic. Each dash ends with a powerful burst obliterating any nearby baddies with an extremely satisfying explosion, and is crucial in the most chaotic of moments.

The sound design kept my ears perked at all times just as any authentic arcade experience should, with distinct bleeps of power ups being collected and the tinkling of small crystalline enemies spawning from their red-glowing silhouette. Trigonarium is a twin-stick that just bleeds with awesome and nostalgic atmosphere.

The gameplay starts off slowly in usual twin-stick fashion with smaller enemies casually lurching around you from each corner, but as time goes on and score conditions are met the frequency and intensity of waves increases into a seriously chaotic clusterfuck of colorfully calculated craziness. Things get tense to the point where you're counting down every second until your next Dash move is charged to plow your way forcefully to that crucial power-up that just spawned across the map.

Trigonarium is an incredibly charming and inventive, extremely fun to play twin-stick and is criminally underpriced given the amount of fun I've squeezed out of it.

I bought this game on a whim. For the price you have to pay, you get a game that's:

1. Easy to read

2. offers a unique boosting mechanic

3. Is filled with all kinds of interesting game modes

What's also fun is that there's even a local multiplayer feature. So if you and your friend enjoy shooting abstract shapes and keeping your eyes peeled when the arenas re-configure themselves, give this game a try!

Trigonarium is a very solid twin-stick shooter that has never received the recognition and love it well deserves. If you find the Geometry Wars games to be too fast for you, but you enjoy the mechanics of Super Stardust HD, then this is the game you want to have a go at. Unlike many other titles in the same price bracket, this one appears to have been tested thoroughly: I don't recall experiencing any bugs whatsoever.

This title is critically underrated and at only three euros it's an absolute steal. I urge everyone to give it a whirl!

I don't write reviews but the value + playability + yeehaw! factor of this game made me do it. I want to be helpful so I will keep this short and focused.

Asteroids for grownups on LSD may represent the controls, the purpose, and the environment. Only one other metaphor is missing but I couldn't remember any games that did it. The maps you play on run a pre-programmed series of changes that alternately confound and isolate. Big open map starts and you are spinning and dodging to avoid enemies as they home in on you, then a warning sequence begins and you have to figure out where you think you should be. A level transformation won't kill you but it could leave you in a wholly isolated -tiny tiny- box of sadness for a few seconds. And while you are there, your new mini slice of the whole map is still spawning enemies in a 3" x 3" anxiety pool. When it happend to me I thought I might have found the fatal flaw in the design concept, then my prison cell burped homing death triangles at me and I just spun, fired, and laughed.

I like to shop on Steam for the 0.01 - 5.99 range of games looking for gems. This game, for the number of game modes (and each of the game modes has options for how you play that mode) and the pucker factor, is a gem.

I think I paid 2.99 for this title and I was satisfied in the first few minutes I played it.

Have fun--

I'm a big fan of twin-stick shooters and this one has some unique gameplay and modes. The arena morphes as you progress through the levels and makes it much more challenging. The power ups are short and powrful by collecting yellow hexagon and to power up upgrade fire power you collect the pink hexagon and there's a quick dash mode to ram through every emenies that get caught in the way but there is no bombs.

There's also boss fight after you complete/survive the waves.

Don't judge this game by lack of pretty/colourful graphics because the gameplay is just top notch for an indie game.

So I kind of bought this game on a whim, and let me say, I am NOT disappointed!

The gameplay is a very solid, tight knit, twin stick shooter with a unique boosting mechanic. The pacing, is fresh and frantic, with different enemy types and an ever changing arena.

The morphing arena is brilliant and really switches up the gameplay and your overall strategy. One minute your in an expansive room, the next your rubbing shoulders against the wall. I love it.

The sounds and visuals are very crisp, with satisfying sound effects when you fire your weapon. And the music is good too, however I do wish there were more tracks.

Overall I love this game, and it is CRIMINALLY UNDERATED! I wish more people knew about this game, because I think it would be a nice addition to the other twin stick shooters. With a multitude of game modes, achievements, and local coop, I will be spending a lot of time on Trigonarium.

I can't believe that this game has not received any love.

This is a Rose Red arena shooter.

The arena is constantly morphing.

There are more modes than Paul Bunyon could swing a giant redwood at.

The controls are slick and smooth.

I imagine co-op to be a pretty good rush.

I'll write more later...

But...

if you're any kind of retro style arena twin sticker...

you need this.
