Still enjoying this masterpiece since I first purchased it in 2001!
It is an easy game to play. A good strategy game
Worse than Civ 2. All the Civ games are worse than Civ 2.
its great
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE COMPUTER GAMES
It is a great game.
FUN,learning,and sid meiers game
It is quite immersive.
Actually one of my favourite civ games, although it does crash sometimes :(
So save often.
A great game!
The best of the classic Civ games
love this game!
I like the ease of modding
This is one of the best games of all time. I have been playing it since I was in the 6th grade. I more then likely have well over 1,000 hours of real play time of this game over all the years. I used to come home and pick up my civ from where I left it. Before I knew it hours had gone by. I am now a grown man and I still play this game. IMHO it is far superior to the civ games that have come after it. They tended to make it easier to play and more orientated toward the casual or kid player. I will continue to play this game as long as I can run i have an OS that will run it.
classic coming back in 2024 October started 2006 my dad loved this game
The only reason I rate this game 9/10 is because it's too addicting.
Seriously, this was my childhood, and surprisingly, it still holds up today.
Would definitely recommend.
game won't load this sucks i payed for it its my favorite game ever. error code 13
very competitive environment for an older turn based game
its simplicity and reliable operation
Its a fun old school game. Likely the newer versions are better but its good fun none the less
Best version of Civ before they started destroying the franchise.
played it since i was 19 and in the navy. great game
lots of replay value
loved this game back in the day really wanted to play but couldn't get game to work 1st had issue with not going full screen (idc about low graphics its an old game) got it to kinda work so i could at lest see the full menu (cut off at very bottom) still wouldn't go full wide tho was finally able to get to build world and select civ and try to start but every time id try to launch game after set up it would crash very disappointing tryed editing game files and couldn't fix issues even trying to fallow community fix guides wish threy would fix these issues as i would rather play 3 or even 2 over the new sid meiers games civ 2 and civ3 were better games IMO sad i cant get it to work.... :'(

Classic. Old school 4x strategy. One of the best out there for its time.

I have a lot more hours than this
8/10. Spend a lot of hours in my childhood playing this game. I remember I was cheating a lot but it felt really good to conquer nations anyway
Please... I can't stop... I played this game so much as a wee child, and the music + pixel art have aged so well. The game mechanics are certainly simpler than the later games in the series, but for some reason I find this one the most addictive.
I bought this again on Steam, even though I know I have the CDs somewhere, just because it called to me so strongly. There are some bugs, namely with the audio, which I imagine are probably also present in the original version when played on modern hardware, but you can download some third-party audio thing to fix them. There are also occasional crashes (they seem to only happen occasionally when moving a stack of units off of a transport) that I don't know how to fix, but they are honestly not that annoying, since even if you forgot to save, it autosaves every turn.
A classic. Newer versions look more polished but the game play in Civ3 is unique.
It allows you to create your own maps, allowing historical battles to be fought.
Absolute classic!

it's a classic.
Huge, wonderful, time sink.
Is not visible even reducing screen to 800 x 600!! Seems to need 640 x 480 (talk about old school) but my PC monitor can't go that low. Too bad. For nostalgic reasons, I would have enjoyed playing this a little bit again. In particular, with Civ II and III also, I think, you could invest in a particular rich square to get multiple benefits from a single worker.
classic
I liked the easyness of the game.
I have been playing this game for many years. It is engrossing, addictive and I still love it!
Civilization 3 was and is, by far, the best Civ game ever. I do not understand how Sid Meier could deviate from the concepts, GUI, look-and-feel, etc., of this great game. Civ4 started to deviate by removing the 'defensive' stats of units, diplomacy seemed much more limited, and the graphical design was very bad with the 'giant units.' I won’t even mention Civ 5, which I played for maybe 30 seconds before immediately uninstalling: Civ 5 is an insult to the Civ lineage. Civ 6 I played for a few hours, but it just feels painful—it’s as if they deliberately threw away all the great ideas in Civ3.
Combats, for example, which were always central to Civ, are now almost nonsensical to me. First, it is nonsensical and a pain to remove unit stacking. 'Ghost' garrisons that 'magically' exist in new cities are just nonsense. Unit movement points causing units to 'wait' until the next turn to move to hills or similar terrain is just a pain—all the excitement of combat in Civ 3 was removed. Diplomacy feels 'pre-defined' and dull compared to Civ3. And the interface is catastrophic compared to Civ3—the wonderful and very practical advisors's screen where you could see all your cities (and citizens' heads!) and all your units (per city or per unit), etc., are gone and replaced by useless and awkward elements. Wonders don’t feel like wonders. Shields are gone. We no longer have the 'feeling' of the process of building and accumulating shields. New 'features' like the 'civics tree,' districts, and other additions are merely minor and unnecessary complications that don't add any real value... I could go on for a while.
I really beg Sid Meier to reconsider Civ3, which is objectively a wonder of the world. I am sick of people thinking that they need to change things just for the sake of change—even things that worked well! Keep the things that work. There are, however, many minor changes and improvements (e.g., new units, some details or 'bugs' in the diplomacy, etc.) that can be addressed. But 'change for change’s sake' is simply equivalent to stupidity and generally leads to very unsatisfactory outcomes. In the culinary world, you don't improve a recipe by randomly changing all the ingredients.
Please, Sid Meier, if you read this: It’s time to revive and continue a 'true' Civilization lineage that fully embraces and builds upon the core principles that made Civ3 an unparalleled masterpiece.
P.S.
Please note that I have been playing Civ 3 since it was released around 2001-2002, and I still play it today. Before that, I played Civ 2, which was a fantastic game as well, though I must admit that Civ 2 now feels a bit "dated" to me.
Civ 3, however, still doesn't feel like an old game, even here in 2024, which is solid proof of its enduring greatness.
An ancient game by today's standards but a significant one, but worthwhile. It exhibits a fine balance between the various factors affecting growth and security. Although the AI opponents are not super-bright they do cause you problems.
Simple strategy, like chess.
The best of a classic
Favorite of all time. Wish somebody would update the interface but not the game.
Still a good balanced game, and arguably the best of the Civ series until the release of Civ V.
Not as good as CIV II
