Tutorial is both inconvenient and explains very little.
Controls are clunky and a little frustrating.
Gameplay is uninspired.
Events in the game make no sense.
And then there's the multitude of stupid stuff that completely breaks the immersion:
- "Milky Way" and "solar system" are not the same thing...
- "Galaxy" and "universe" are not the same thing...
- There are certainly more stupid mix-ups like this, but I honestly didn't bother to play this stupid game for any longer to find them...
- I would understand a mining outpost in the middle of the asteroid belt, but a trade post? Far from any inhabitated celestial body? C'mon...
[*]Why would an allied ship attack me on Pluto of all places? Why would it attack me at all? We're working for the same company! Is this supposed to happen on the very first mission?...
This game might be fine for casual gamers without basic knowledge of space/beyond, but if you're looking for a decent gaming experience and know more about science/physics/space than your dead grandmother does...
... you won't enjoy this stupid game.
The graphics are somewhat nice, though.
It needs a tutorial.
Project Tarvotan is a somewhat unusual kind of game, I suppose it's best explained as a kind of stat based "survival" game meets space exploration/trading game. There's a welcome depth to the game mechanics as you scan planets, dispatch probes, trade and ally with various factions and so on. But where it falls down is in a series of very poor game design decisions. Most of the game interface is just clicking through various menus and things like an interactive web game. There's golf-swing minigames and so on as well, which clash with the whole idea of piloting a spaceship and exploring the galaxy... thematically these elements just don't sit properly together.
One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately ethical behaviour and genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant gaming experience.
The first thing that will strike anyone seriously trying to play this is just how clunky, confronting and obtuse the user interface is. Standard UI conventions aren't followed, and because the majority of the "gameplay" here is conducted by clicking through menus, not getting those perfect is a death knell for this kind of game.
The game doesn't have any save game features, despite that being a basic standard for all games of this time. The developer might defend this as an attempt to make the game seem more "difficult" without them having to balance the game or do their job properly with engaging and challenging level design, but it's just as likely they simply couldn't work out how to make a save game feature work. Either way, that's a defect that adds another reason for gamers to avoid this game.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the mid 2000s. The planet Earth almost looks like a D20. I feel bad for anyone who has to fly around on that planet, avoiding all the hard edges. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
Project Tarvotan is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
8.5/10
I recently had the opportunity to play Project Tarvotan, a space exploration and survival game developed by FlagmanJeremy. This game has an interesting concept, as you are tasked with balancing resources and making decisions to explore different sectors of the Milky Way and restore balance to the universe.
One of the things I liked about Project Tarvotan was the trading system, which allows you to make trades with other ships to purchase goods and stay alive. The quests were also enjoyable, as they provided a challenge and allowed you to manage relationships with other factions in the game.
However, I did experience some issues with the combat system, as it felt a bit clunky and not well optimized. The graphics were also lackluster and could have used some improvement.
Despite these issues, I did find Project Tarvotan to be an enjoyable and unique experience. If you're a fan of space exploration and survival games, I would recommend giving Project Tarvotan a try. Just be prepared for some bumps along the way!
nice game :)
You start out in the milky way and you can work your way around different fantasy galaxies trying to find the right balance to survive in a strategic way
Обычная фигня. Не трогайте.
The best time I had with this crap was when I uninstalled it.
Very easy to own it, but the game is bad.
It takes about an hour to play through the game. You start in the Milky Way and go through a bunch of different solar systems until you arrive at the finale. Every new galaxy gets a lot harder and it takes a while to get enough science to get to the next system.
The finale is kind of like a roulette wheel because that black hole just keeps eliminating planets. The best strategy is to spend as little time as possible because every turn puts you at risk.
I mean the game isn't really worth more than a few bucks. Looks like the developer found a pretty generous price at 99 cents but I mean its a decent game.
This is like A-A+ school project game. It's pretty simple one, but interface does make it looks way too complicated. So you go to the tutorial and find one of the most baffling things I see in games. Every page of tutorial auto skips in 30 sec. You could press space to add time to read about different aspects of the game and interface. It's really got laught out of me than I forget to press space and auto move to another page and found out that you could go back and forward manually. So it makes counter and add time feature meaningless. Also, you could add time by pressing space only to the 59 sec. It's break my brain thinking about why do developers did tutorial like this. And it's the most interesting thing about this game.
I didn't find any logs, which is pretty important, because sometimes you see messages popup in the middle of the screen. They warn you about enemy ships, state of planets and amoung of resources you've got.
It was a little bit satisfying than you've got to the further systems than in your previous session. But it's only joy you've got from this game and I still can't recommend this one.
very good game about space for few hours worth the price
give it a try
This is a simplistic 2 dimensional game with a linear progression. It is probably not even worth your time.
idk what to do
Much orbit sims into where you can explore the galaxy! TRUST ME!
The game looks like it might have a really good concept. Too bad it's unplayable.
For one, no saving and loading. That makes it completely useless for anyone who has a life.
Two, the tutorial is laughable. Tutorials are supposed to explain how the game works, not just go over the HUD and then end. I can't figure out the controls, even if I could save the game. Which I can't. I spent ten minutes clicking on things in the combat screen, trying to get something to happen -- then gave up.
Do not waste your time on this game until the developers put in a save/load function and a tutorial that includes how to play the game instead of just explaining what you're looking at. When and if they do that, grab it.
Nope... I tried it and its a game that doesn't let you save.
If it had that feature it would be ok... a little niche tho, a niche I like to support.
But can't...
Cool idea tho but updates are rare and feels like abandonware.
There is still no way to save the game or to reload it. You start the game, you play it for a while, and when you quit, you have to start from the beginning again (if you bother). If you want to play such a game, go ahead - I don't.
Moreover, the game appears to be abandoned meanwhile - prove me wrong, developers!
I wonder why the other reviewers didn't point out that saving and loading is impossible (did they?).
I've rewritten this review a few times. Each time, I'd go back to the game, thinking I should give it another chance before I asked for a refund. Each time my experience was worse than the last. The more I learned, the more I disliked what I saw.
Then I realized that I've spent too much time both on this review and on the game. Time I'll never get back.
It's simply a bad game. Move along; nothing to see here.
Barely worthy of Early Access, let alone a full launch.
There are some interesting ideas at play (which is why I bought it in the first place), but after playing nearly an hour, all I can think of is "that's an hour of my life I'll never get back".
I wanted to like it, the concept is definitely interesting, but the execution is simply terrible. Tutorial barely worthy of the name, horrid combat, unresponsive UI. Just bad design overall.
From someone who loves strategy and simulation games: stay away.
I feel a game should grip you/capture your attention straight from the beginning, and Project Tarvotan does the exact opposite of that. Maybe it gets better? Perhaps this would be my GOTY of 2015 if I gave it more of a chance, but I guess I'll never find out.
Time to go ask for that refund.
