There isn’t a lot to say about this one. It’s… fine? It’s a bit more of a standard shmup compared to XIIzeal, in that you just have the one weapon without the blade attack. It’s a lot better than it probably should be, considering it employs just about every terrible element these games often do (super fast scrolling backgrounds, sudden jerky panorama shifts horizontally/diagonally that completely F up your dodging or aiming, and bullets that are difficult to decipher from everything else around you). Thank god there weren’t any come from below enemies, that would have taken the cake. It somehow manages to keep your attention though, and never gets quite so frustrating as you might expect. It’s just kind of

If there was ever a ''diamond in the rough'' or a ''hidden gem'' then this one counts, it really counts.
This game has something most other games can't seem to understand, good, grimy, muddy and downright rough looking pixel art that gives the game an authentic feel, it reminds me a lot of the old RAIDEN TRAD game, in a very very good way.
The music is outstanding, gotta give props to level 3 music the most.
The powerup system is interesting, and quite fun and challenging that ends up rewarding.
The only downside is that it's incredibly hard and almost unfair at times, i really hate the split second it takes from when the bullet hits and u lose, thinking u got away with it, but u actually lost.
Starting the game with 2 credits and then eventually 3 is not enough for most casual players, but u do end up getting good at it, and u notice u get a bit farther each time.
If u love the genre and find it cheap, get it, it is a good game.

The weapon system is really cool and it's a fun game, but MAN there are a lot of small bullets with low visibility that are coming at you VERY fast at times. Certain sections just feel a bit too bullsh*t for me to recommend this. That being said, if you love the old fast shmups that people often describe as bullsh*t, you may like this one.

Deltazeal is a return to the 90s style shoot 'em ups I enjoy so very much. Simple game mechanics, outstanding pixel graphics and an excellent challenge without being overly brutal.

The mechanics that that make Deltazeal standout are the way power ups work. The game has the standard wide shot, missiles and lasers. However, the game lets the player mix and match these weapons and upgraded version along a power up track. Each time a power up is picked up it gets add to the right of the the track. Once the power up track is full, the left most power up is dropped to make room for the newest one.

I really like this power up mechanic. Many shooters reset of the strength of the power up once you switch. Deltazeal not only doesn't do that, but allows the player to craft a mix to get a little bit of everything or really concentrate on one type. Me, I prefer powerful missiles and laser attack with limited spread shot to deal with popcorn enemies.

The other thing that stands out in DeltaZeal is the stage design. Just like in science the symbol delta means change. So to with the stages. Often having differing sections or be completely different stages. One such more significant stage change is the Warning sub-stage. This can be a parking lot of tanks or fleet of hidden submarines popping up to take shots at the player's ship. What this does is keep the player on their toes. Preventing pure memorization to take over. And I like that. These changes aren't so much that they could ruin a 1cc run (I don't think). But they also keep the stages from getting stale as they are played over and over.

Deltazeal doesn't do anything incredible, but it does do a few things a little differently. It's these little differences that elevate a good shooter to something I want to come back to and play more and more. Other than that, it provides all the things I look for in a STG.

First i am going to say that this game is not bad. However I can only recomend it if you buy it with discount. at current price i can´t recomend it as in my point of view is expensive for what it is compared to other shmups games in the market.
Pros:
- There is nothing wrong in gameplay mechanics , bullet patterns. graphic and sound while not great do their service. the game is fun to play.
- It is good to have a classic shmup (not bullet hell) in this era as the simple and classic gameplay as his charm.you have normal shoot , a special shoot and a bomb and pretty much sums it up.
- some enemyes (specialy bosses are quite original and unique)
- has tate mode, and you can also zoom and move the gameplay area.
Cons
- The visual clarity is not the best. in fact some enemy bullets could contrast more with the background
- there is a limit of 3 credits. I think it is elitist, every gamer should have a oportunity to reach all levels
- some enemies bullets are fast but in a wrong way. They are fast because your ship has a default slow speed to dodge. In fact you take a lot of time for a shmup to go to the other side of the screen with your speed. luckly if you play often you and memorize the positions, type of enemyes and patterns and you will eventualy get through
In the end we have a shmup equal to many. with nothing wrong, but also nothing great (witch is still a problem). When we see old and better shmups like ikaruga, toaplan games and psycho here on steam at a better and cheaper price and also some good modern ones cheap i can´t recomend this game. Buy it if you like classic shmups and want to play something new to have fun (my case) but with a discount as i did (at least 50% discount , but 65% is more fair).

There's a lot to praise in DeltaZeal. The gameplay is fun, the power up mechanic is very unique and interesting, the blackhole attack is a very nice addition that gives more defensive options to players, and the presentation is solid. However, the game suffer from one MAJOR design flaw... and that is the horrendous visual clarity.

While making a shmup, it is very important to make every element on a stage visible to players and make sure they don't blend together. A lot of shmups use distinct color palettes to avoid clarity issues, while others give players a choice to dim the background (e.g. Rival Megagun) so the enemies and projectiles appear more colorful and bright in comparison. DeltaZeal does none of those. Enemy projectiles not only blend with with the background and your own attacks, but also get camouflaged by the bonus point items. This paves the way for many, MANY unfair deaths and generates needless frustration.

And we cannot try to (wrongfully) defend the game by mentioning its roots as a coin-gobbling arcade game. As with the rest of Triangle Service shmups on Steam, This re-release also has limited continues (only 2 at the start of the game) that can be increased by reaching unknown goals. So we cannot even put a band-aid on this issue by abusing unlimited credits.

I want to like this game, but I can't. The visual clarity is too big of an issue to ignore, and it makes the game painful and unfun. I do not recommend playing this game.

Awful presentation and menu system. Unplayable in full screen mode. So pathetically bad that, if it were free, it wouldn't even be worth the energy you would spend to click the button to add it to your account.

I really like the pixel graphics and the music. The power-up mechanic is cool and the shooting is fun.

Poor projectile clarity ruins the game for me unfortunately.

Oh, I *really* don't like this one. It might be the most miserable experience I've had, as a casual player, with one of these so far. The biggest issue is projectile visibility. They're all glow-y white or glow-y pink, they blend with the background or, worse with your own projectiles. Half the time you can't tell what killed you. Another issue is the speed of enemy projectiles as related to your ship; they're not *faster* than you, but many of them are just *slightly* slower. This means if you're pressing one direction and suddenly need to switch to dodge, you don't really have enough of a window to do so. Then, there is the issue of enemies popping up from every corner of the screen and sucker-punching you.

In general, the game is cheap. It seems like memorization of levels takes precedence here over reflexes or split-second decisions. I know it's an arcade port, but I don't got any coins on me and this is very much designed in a way you'd expect a coin-gobbler to work. Different difficulty settings don't really counter that problem; on the contrary, they just make it even more obvious. I'm not a pro, but I'm not a complete noob either. If I have the exact same problems on Very Easy and on Normal, there's probably a deeper reason for that.

Deltazeal does feature a couple of unique-ish mechanics. Its power-up mechanic is probably the most interesting; instead of simply different types of weapons, you have a bar you can fill up with a specific type of a color-coded weapon power-up (spread, missile or laser), granting yourself an enhanced version of that weapon; alternatively, you can fill up the bar with different types, resulting in a weaker, mutli-purpose weapon (by mixing the three types) that covers a wider range of attacks. The more spaces a color takes up in the bar, the more prominent the respective weapon will be in the attack.

The other feature is branching paths, but to be perfectly honest, I have no idea how to engage them. I only accidentally found myself in a different level 3 during on session and I don't know how I got there. But hey, it's something that exists in the game.

I don't know what else to say; it does feel like I'm wrestling with the game over who has control and that's just not entertaining to me. Getting hit with a projectile in a shmup can elicit responses that range from frustration to denial to determination for future plays. Getting hit with a projectile in Deltazeal gets a single response from me every time: an eye-roll. By the time I'm down to my last credit, I feel defeated, playing on auto-pilot. The fact that once you're out of credits, the game doesn't even lead to an instant game-over, but waits for the timer to run-down waiting for extra credits (which you, of course, have no way of obtaining at that point) is just adding insult to injury. This one, seemingly tiny, oversight by the developers to patch this arcade convention out is just rubbing salt in the wound.

It's a game that seems to be liked by many as well, so I don't know how helpful my take on it is; but I'm not having fun with it and I do believe us, the proud caste of Filthy Casuals, will have trouble getting into it.

Disclosure: Updated the review with information on the power-up system and the branching paths, as well as clarifying the final verdict.

Arcade version was definitely more fun, maybe only due to atmosphere.
Visual clarity at an all-time low, and the hitbox detection isn't great.

The game lags prior to projectile collision, essentially widening the size of your hitbox in the sense that you have less space to dodge something than you think you would, because once it stutters you're dead, even if you had another 1cm+ of space before collision. Like the game seems to project that your death is imminent, loads assets for that, the load itself causes the stutter: death is inevitable.

Music's good at least, and I was surprised to see that the leaderboards are still online.

I like the pace and music of the game, and I especially like the powerup system (which is unique, as far as I can tell), but unfortunately, the game suffers from one major design flaw that prevents me from recommending it. The developers, for some reason, decided to make enemy bullets nearly identical in color to bonus point gems, which are nearly identical in color to your spread shot. All three are a shade of pink. Why? Why would anyone think that's a good idea? It only adds artificial difficulty to the game and, consequently, frustration for the player. Triangle should take notes from the developers of Crimzon Clover, who have managed to make an arcade shooter with remarkable bullet visibility, despite that there is so much more chaos in that game than this one. I want to like it, want to play it, but I can't--not like this.

Good 90s feel shmup...keep in mind though, even on very easy bullet speed is quite fast and something i never could get used to. Also, many of the bullets are different colors and can be very difficult to see sometimes.

I do like when you get hit everything stops for a quick moment. Nice chunky pixel graphics, branching paths and huge bosses too. You also earn continues by gameplay time instead of just getting unlimited continues from the start which is great, although once you reach level 7, if you lose all your lives you have to start the stage over again which means I'll most likely never finish the game.

The hitbox is feels kinda big though, but its still a fun game.

This game is more like Raiden sequel than XII Zeal sequel. It was rebranded into Zeal series simply because it was made by the same company. So, if you like Raiden, you may like this game.

Can save replay. Have online leaderboard. Can view replays from online leaderboard. I saw two replays that seems to not be a valid replay, but their scores are close to the valid top score. Either hacked or desync'ed.

The game starts with 3 credits and it will increase the more you play. It seems the maximum is 9 credits.

The original arcade name is called G-Stream G2020 in case if you want to emulate it.

A very well-rounded shmup with excellent sprite art and arcade feel. Well, this was in an arcade in Japan, there is no faux stuff here, if you play well it gets balls-to-the-wall hard. There is simplicity in its mechanics at the surface but a lot of depth thanks to the three-weapon based power up system and the black hole special weapon.

You collect medals that grow in value ala Battle Garegga and depending how you perform you get entirely different versions of the stages, some of them very challenging. The 1cc or 1 credit clear doesn't come easy at all!

Performance wise, the game runs like a charm even in lesser configurations. A pad is most definitely needed to play properly (or a big hori stick I guess) but I've only played with the Xbox 360 controller. No idea if others work as well.

All in all, a very nice entry on the Triangle Service library.

For whatever reason, DELTAZEAL is the only Triangle Service game I keep coming back to play time and time again.

It's kinda written off as just another Raiden clone by some--and it does feel a lot like any Seibu Kaihatsu or even a Psikyo game--but the weapon system, branching paths, and weapon system keep the gameplay interesting and reshreshing.

However, no game is without flaws and I have a couple complaints:
1) The enemy bullets are waaaaaay too hard to see sometimes. I'll have a near-perfect run going only to die without warning because a tiny pink bullet was hidden behind my larger pink bullets. This also applies to the powerups which are, you guessed it, the same pink color that both the player and evemy bullets are.
2) All Triangle Service games are basically straight ports of the XBox version which are simple ports of the arcade version. There are no concessions to PC gamers and how they expect a game to work these days: there's no tutorial, few instructions, no pause menu options, few graphical options to choose from, and the controls are simply maps from the keyboard to XBox controller buttons.

If you love arcade shmups and don't mind the difficulty and weird XBox-style controls and graphics, DELTAZEAL is an under-appreciated game that's a lot of fun to play. Despite my complaints, it's still by far my top pick of all of Triangle Service's games.

(Fun fact about the game: it was originally released as G-Stream G2020 by Oriental Soft for arcades, but because Oriental Soft didn't pay Triangle Service for the work, Triangle Soft now releases it under its current name)

If you played XIIZeal and didn't like it (Due to waggling and what not) fear not, DELTAZEAL Is where the money went.

Not only the music and presentation are fantastic, the entire game system is super good, there's branching paths depending on which side of the screen you stand on at certain points and the powerup system is very unique, there's 3 main weapons, wide shot, missile and laser which you powerup by picking color coded triangles, You can mix and match them and have multiple triangles for shot, one on laser and the rest on missiles or go all in and fill your powerup bar with the same powerup to get a super powered version of it, combine this with a black hole special attack that you can release to negate enemy projectiles (and raise your score) and you got a very unique experience.

This game is a little gem that was lost in time, originally it was called G-Stream G2020 developed by "Oriental Soft" which was later "remastered" by Triangle Service (founded by Ex-Oriental Soft's Toshiaki Fujino) and ported to Xbox 360 as in Shooting Love 10th Anniversary XIIZEAL & ΔZEAL (Japan import) and is now easily purchasable on Steam thanks to Degica.

Go buy it, it's good and you should support both Triangle Service and Degica so they keep bringing great games like this to PC.

Very good score based shmup by Triangle Service that brought us XIIZeal. Combine your three main weapons (wide, laser, missiles) the way you want by powering them up and destroy everything that moves. Featuring great level design, a wide assortment of enemies and many secret stuff. Online leaderboards and TATE mode are also implemented. Highly recommended!
