The game had an amazing story line that almost felt like going down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. very imaginative and a lot of thought went into this game. I can't wait to beat the other 2!
fun if you're in to this type of stuff. some of the solutions super easy and others take some thinking to figure out. One solution you absolutely need a walk through for as there is no rhyme or reason for it. Definitely need to write down everything you find.
This is a great game and I suggest that you give it a shot. In general this game has a great story line, challenging puzzles, fun codes, and lots more. This game also goes out to prove that you don't need to be a "smart" person in order to hack. And overall I had a great experience with this game so you should definitely give it a shot!
This is more of just a story. Doesn't really have anything to do with "hacking". Getting a hang of the way the UI/programs work is fairly intuitive. I'm not much for interactive stories, which this borders on, but in the end I did enjoy playing through it.
PSA:
Since this game is all about reading comprehension I took a LOT of notes during the game. I thought I'd need to build a story of minute details in order to progress later on. In fact, there was exactly ONE time that it helped, and by the time I needed that information I also knew what I needed to do to go back and get that information. You really only need to look at the very latest thing to get to the next thing and so on and so forth. Don't worry about taking a bunch of notes!
So far so good but I have to point out.
You have to complete the level tasks in specific orders else you get the message 'You are already logged in....'. This means that you have skipped a step though what you are doing may be a correct step and it even might be the very next step after the one you missed, but you cant continue till you have done the previous step(s).
This is not great as it forces you to do one step at a time. I came across this when I guessed a password but it kept coming up with that message. I had no idea what I had missed out, I had not read the message at the previous step.
However, don't let that put you off a great game.
If you like to experience typing some commands in terminal, then you may try this.
However, it was quite funny to see how the story ends XD
But note: You won't actually learn how to hack/program anything here
But there're some commands are slightly accurate (I would say so)
Still 6/10 I guess HAHAH
The game seems a bit repetitive and quite self intuitive. You will not learn any real hacking but it does teach some better lessons such as finding information and making sure to read everything correctly. It was an okay game but I did find it a bit boring at times.
Would I recommend it? Go ahead, for the price / on sale, it seems like an interesting game and concept. However, it gets a bit boring and so i'm a bit so-so. I would give it a 6/10. still enough for a thumbs up
Nice try, but not really worth any time or money. More of a puzzle game following simple instructions than anything else. Also, a part of the game requires you to visit a website and listen to a song to progress, like a ridiculous ad.
A lot of the times the game is inconsistent when handling case sensitivity. For instance, when entering the first workspace ("Alice"), she is mentioned with a capital A, but you need to use lowercase to progress.
At level 14, it's very confusing you have to go via Alice's account to access Frank's workstation, when you have the same credentials. Poorly instructed.
It quickly turns into a cycle of access someones account, read their emails to find password hints and accounts, and use them.
I was sad to see the game in general has very positive reviews, and this is what the game actually was.
It might be entertaining for a short while though. But, if you have any experience with Linux or hacking in general, you're going to get bored very quickly.
This is a tentative recommendation, as while I enjoyed the presentation, I felt that Hack RUN had a few too many little problems for me to say it's fully fun. A lot of the usernames and passwords are guesses, and several come from regional things like common last names or songs, which made them tedious to crack. That may have been intentional, but it wasn't enjoyable. The story also jumps the shark halfway through, which is a bummer since I liked it initially.
It's something like a 6.5/10 for me, so take that as you will.
I bought this game on the recommendation of someone in a gaming group I’m in, after they learned that I enjoy hacking sims. Hack RUN is also available on mobile if you’re interested. This is more of a glorified puzzle game than a legit simulation, so no one is going to walk away with real hacker skills.
Honestly, this game felt like a lower budget version of the very excellent ARG, The Black Watchmen, also on Steam. The storylines are vaguely similar in that you’re hacking into a mysterious pharmaceutical company to discover they are doing heinous things, and both games utilize dummy websites you can actually go to for clues to solve their puzzles. However, The Black Watchmen is superior in pretty much in every way, from user interface to story design to puzzle quality to immersion.
Hack RUN is strictly a console-like window, much like Hacknet but smaller and less attractive. The commands are very straightforward and simplistic, and quite frankly the puzzles are too if you’ve already played other similar games. You do not need to have any coding experience to play this game; there’s help commands and even a hint command to guide you in the right direction if you get stuck.
There’s a whole lot of hacking into people’s emails, which involves very repetitive steps. The later part of the story starts going off the rails as far as believability, and I lost immersion due to the ridiculousness of it, but maybe scifi fans would embrace that aspect more.
Overall, I would probably give it a neutral rating if I could. It's not the worst thing I've played this year but there's better alternatives if you're looking for something deep and rewarding.
A really quick title to 100%.
This one is kind of a neutral game for me ,since it's not that much fun ,but it's not boring at all.
Worth it ,especially if you get in on sale or in a bundle.
The achievments are not hard ,since you pretty much just have to complete it to get them all.
Overall:6/10.
Finished in 1 hour, so not that much gameplay, and pretty repetitive after a while, but still fun.
The story gets a bit confusing near the end, so I used a walkthrough, and the backstory is pretty lacking. However, the game was still fun, mostly just because it's all about hacking. If it had more commands to hack with, and less instances of the same commands consecutively, it would be a much better game.
So, story's confusing, backstory's lacking, gameplay lacking, $5 USD...
It's cool, but not worth the price. Should be $1. Recommended? No.
If you liked uplink and hacknet then you should definitely give this game a go. It's short but it's engaging and fun. It's got the right mix of easy vs difficult going on so you shouldn't get stuck for very long. There were a lot of quirky gameplay elements that made me realise I was playing a very original game. I don't want to go into too much detail so I don't give anything away.
My main complaint? There's a plot twist that isn't averred to earlier in the game so it kinda feels like it's dumped on you with no prior warning. Would have taken Jonathan Creek like lateral thinking for me to have figured it out without looking it up.
A really fun game that gives a lot of satisfaction. But there's a bug that really makes me uphappy.
It's a trigger bug. I'm guessing that in order to make progress you have to activate certain triggers, but these triggers a lot of the time don't activate by themselves.
For example, if you successfully hack into someone's profile, it'll say
"------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUCCESSFULLY REACHED LEVEL [number]
You successfully hacked into [Such and such]'s [whatever] system.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------"
Thats an indication that you reached a trigger, and is supposed to happen when you gain access to someone else's login.
For example, I'm currently on a puzzle that is needing me to log into "Irene Smith"'s account, here is my log : [SPOILERS]
hack> reps
Establishing a connection to the RUN Sales Rep System
Connection Established

username: ISmith
password: may
Successfully logged into the RUN Sales Rep System as ISmith
See? No trigger. And when I try to check their mail, or see what files they have in order to advance, they have no mail, and they have no files for me to advance. As seen in this log
Successfully logged into the RUN Sales Rep System as ISmith

BUT, if I type in "answer" to the game, it skips the trigger, and I get :

Answer to reach level 19:

It gives me the trigger, and now everything is there.
This is incredibly frustrating for a game that takes a lot of trial and error. I've had to use this to get past the last 3 or 4 logins because I thought I had the wrong person at first.
The game is really fun, but as of 6/29/16, it is broken, and you can't play it the way that it was mean't to be played. When it gets an update, and this is fixed, I'll edit this and change my reccomendation. Because the game IS fun and satisfying, but the frustration of the bug outweighs that, and having to use a cheat to get the answers I already had just so I can progress just feels wrong, and takes out a lot of the satisfaction of the game.
This is a unique game. It's a hacking style / text adventre game that requires you to think and unless you plan on playing it all in one sitting, take old fasioned notes. The story unfolds via email converstations that lead you to more emails that lead you to more emails.
The first half of the game is reading emails to get the next users email account password. It even requires you to visit external sites which adds a bit of immersion, but also runs you into the ground. Once of the sites in game is down at the moment and now I am have to cheat to make progress.
Not worth the five dollars, as guessing passwords and user names gets boring. If you can look past this and the game breaking website access, you might have some fun.
vic.mail>s review
Since I've played Hacker Evolution from exosyphen, I'm interested in hacking games. Well, I don't play them often but when this one was announced, I've been intrigued.
I've finally decided to play it a few days ago and it was.... wow. Simply flashy green, with commands to write and nothing else around. It's called going straight to the point. And the big negative point? NO MUSIC! Hacker Evolution had music. Good music. Very very good music. And here? I'm playing in a deadly silence....
You're staying in the game for 2 main reasons:
- You want to know the story
- These achievements unlocking each time you're hacking, or receiving, or... in other words, it can be a quick release of achievements.
Because, let's be honest: typing always the same thing because the piece of information you need is always in an email isn't really captivating. Well, thanks god, there is at least 5% of the game that aren't about typing m and e.
And yet, if typing the same thing is boring, trying to find passwords, or usernames, or any clue that can help you is very very enjoyable. I'm only thinking about those that aren't singing the alphabet song in English, because I had to rely on wikipedia to find the right song (and the right version) before giving up and looking at a guide with passwords only (and you're facepalming because you never realized that for three letters, it was a pause after them). And the principle to open notes in the basic notepad and your browser to check websites specific to the game... and even listen to a song - yay, the only track of the game - is awesome. You can keep track of names for exemple. Well, my Notepad++ was already opened to write my walkthrough, so, I never needed to write "notes".
Anyway, the game managed to hook me to the series (though I'm still preferring Hacker Evolution). Maybe 5 bucks is a little too high (as it costs less in app stores) but I'm not feeling like I was robbed.
Now, if you'll excuse me, my character is now trying to save - again - his loved one in Hack RUN ZERO. After al-

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU ADVANCED TO LEVEL X - YOU SUCCESFULLY INTERRUPTED VIC'S REVIEW
(I'm not going to reveal here the big twist but 10/10 for the game by the way)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so after 4 hours im threw, actually more like 2 hours i just didnt close the game while getting dinner but nvm
the game is alot of fun, while you do mostly the same all the time
you figure out a username and a password and then get to read that accounts mails etc. and repeat
while that sounds kinda boring, it isnt.
the mails are very funny and while you dont get to see any character you always get some kind of info about the person you just hacked/you are a bout to hack
i had some laughs while reading some mails i found
in the beginning i liked the story very much because its kinda the way you think, how a hacker gets his job
you receive an email in which you are hired to hack in to the systems of a large company to look if u can find some dirty information
there comes a plot twist at around lvl 30 that is IMO kinda bad, since the story gets a little crazy and completely unrealistic
my 2nd bad point is, that i had the bug, that i hacked into the next acccount, but there was nothing on it (no mails nor documents or anything)
neither did the game tell me that i reached the next level, after relogin into the account several times, or typing "answer" just to see i did the right thing, it updated my level and the account had mails/documents in it
so theres a problem to fix i guess
still i would suggest you buy this game if you like riddle games, but buy it in the googleplaystore, since it only costs 3€ there
A fun little game, and I recommend it.
There is a strange mix of clues which are so obvious it hurts, and moments where you are having to take potshots, but overall its a fun puzzle game. Don't expect a deep hacking simulator - though it manages to capture some essence of the experience while making the secrets discovered interesting enough to motivate me to play through to the end. Took me a fair few hours, which I regard as money well spent.
It's a puzzle game on the terminal. I really like the concept, since you are allowed to purely focus on the tasks given. There are no distractions. On the overall, the puzzles are ok, but some are not really logical, like the guessing of some usernames. Don't get me wrong, the game is amazing, but I wished for some logical decisions, and not so much trial and error.
Very good Game. Entertained me well.
Story at the End is a little bit WTF, but the gameflow is nice.
You dont need any programming skills just a little bit free brainspace and maby google for binary decoding.
