Why choose Football, Tactics & Glory when there are other football managers?
If you’ve played traditional football managers, you’re probably familiar with the following feelings:
Complex attributes: Footballers have many attributes, and you don’t always understand which ones truly affect the match outcome. Often, the only strategy becomes buying high-level players instead of finding a footballer whose unique attribute perfectly suits your tactics.
Unclear results: You never really know why you win or lose. This forces players to search for "winning" formations on forums instead of analysing the opponent and consciously selecting footballers capable of exploiting their weaknesses.
Financial complexity: Club funds quickly disappear, and it’s hard to understand how to manage finances and strategically plan expenditures.
Football, Tactics & Glory is a game about full control and a complete understanding of what’s happening on the pitch and in the club:
Transparency of attributes: You always know exactly how each footballer’s attribute impacts the encounters, allowing you to customise formations for each opponent, defeating even stronger teams with the right player selection and tactical approach. This also makes transfers much more interesting and exciting.
Control over tactics: Feel like a real coach, making smart tactical decisions, not just changing formations hoping for luck.
Control over luck: Luck plays a big role, as in real football. But you can minimise its impact by understanding your players’ abilities and building the team around your playstyle.
Strategic financial planning: The game’s economy is designed so that you always feel in control of your finances. The game demonstrates the importance of strategies like "developing" footballers for sale and finding promising talents who will become your future stars.
No micromanagement: This is a game about strategic planning, not micromanagement. Instead of wasting time on increasing an attribute by 0.01%, you make decisions that significantly affect the club’s fate. Therefore, the game lacks the boring elements of football managers: endless spreadsheets, routine tasks, and unimportant mechanics.
Great variety: FTG is so deep that even after hundreds of hours, you’ll continue discovering new and interesting things. The game world develops uniquely each time, creating new challenges and exciting emergent stories. This makes each campaign different from the last one.
The game values your time: You can complete one football season in a few real hours instead of days, as in other football managers. At the same time, each season is packed with events and interesting decisions.
Comprehensive tutorial: The game explains all elements in detail. And if you still have questions, the active community will answer them on the forum or Discord.
Why does a football manager need a turn-based match mechanic?
Good turn-based mechanics allow complex systems to be simplified, while retaining their essence and emotions. For example, XCOM perfectly conveys the feel of firefights with aliens, and Civilization — the development of a civilisation.
Our turn-based system uses key football concepts to make match outcomes and your tactical decisions clear and transparent. Once you understand how these mechanics work, you’ll feel the emotions inherent in real football.
Additionally, the ability to take your time with each move allows for comfortable gameplay. Especially if you’re over 40 and don’t have the reaction speed you once had.
So, is it a full-fledged football manager?
Yes, it’s a serious football manager that’s easy to start playing due to its apparent simplicity, but hard to stop because of the depth of its features.

Tons of fun.
Extremely fun game that leverages the strategy of tactics and the beauty and elegance of football.
great game, feels like if pes was combined with a board game
incredible, who would have know that mixing turn based strategy with football was a good idea. Well it is! This game features mechanics I've never seen before and implements them very well. Would recommend.
It's an amazing RNG take on the FM formula. The learning curve is there, and you need to do the extensive tutorial to be successful. However, the tutorial is also extremely well made, with training ground scenarios that help immensely with immersion. It's extremely satisfying to employ the tactics you learned to beat opponents that would otherwise wipe the floor with you. Coped with the players you signed and then trained to specifically fit into your tactical vision, you do feel like a manager pulling the strings just right to get that narrow win against a stronger opponent.
As FM and Battle Brothers veteran, I felt this game as a very fresh take on the genre. Sure, sometimes luck will not be on your side and you'll pull your hair losing to a weak opponent that just got lucky, but other times you'll feel you put the pieces in just the right places to do that successful season you prepared for. And sometimes, you'll be the one to pull a narrow 1:0 win against a much, much stronger opponent. Just like in real football, no match is alike, and anything could happen - if you take that into account, you'll save yourself a lot of rage, and you'll be able to enjoy the game much more.
Generally, a very good game that I spent a lot of hours of enjoyment on. The occasional annoyance of bad luck is made absolutely worth it by seeing your players grow, seeing your tactics finally start to work, and the player you spent so much money and glory on becoming a star.
It's a good game - you will need to put in some time to learn it, but it's absolutely worth it!
FTG is a great turn-based tactics game. Don't be fooled: this is a game more like XCOM than like FIFA. You don't need to be a big football fan to enjoy it, though some knowledge will help. Well worth the purchase.
After 500h, and i didn´t even start with Manager's Journey jet, it´s finally time to give a thumbs up here. Right amount of complexity, pacing and randomness to play for a long time and create emotions in both directions. Perfect for Steam Deck. Great game, well done!
This is a brave but misguided attempt to enhance the beautiful game for those of us with a strategy spine, and there's much to admire here.
The character animations are great, whether in play or in celebration, and the character customiser is probably the most comprehensive I have ever seen in a game. You can alter the tip of your player's nose in at least two or three ways! Why that is necessary, I have no idea, but it is fun - again, if you have that kind of brain.
Sadly, that's where the good news (for me at least) ends.
There are three ways to play a match. You can play it yourself, you can simulate the outcome, or you can watch. If you play it yourself (which would seem to be the whole point, but it's really not) you will have to master a bewildering array of special conditions that apply differently to all the many different types of players.
There are defenders, midfielders and forwards, each of which has a number of sub-categories, each of which has a variety of moves characteristic of that type. For example, defending wingers can go on long runs up their appropriately footed wing, whilst defending sweepers can move free of charge at the front of the box. Those are just two examples.
Now, all of that probably sounds fine, but the problems come in the execution of these basic ideas. If you have not memorised all the many varieties of move then you will have to click in play to see the potential result of any action. BUT the action you can take (because your class allows it) once you have taken your current move is not shown, and you will have to remember the rules.
For example, you can cross the ball into the box, and any player in the opponent's box can head towards goal. BUT a player with a special ability to head the ball (more on special abilities in a moment) can head from anywhere inside an area that is related to his position. BUT, you cannot see either your crossing possibilities or the heading possibilities until you have committed to the move which allows you to cross the ball.
So, in regard to all the moves it's a bit like chess. The knight moves 2/1 and can jump over other pieces, the rook can move any distance in straight lines, but not diagonals, and so on.
BUT in chess, all the pieces look different, and the moves they can do never change (except when a pawn is queened), so you never have to spend any time trying to figure out which piece is which. But here all your players look the same, and whilst you do move the majority yourself, they do move according to their own rules as well, meaning it's very easy to lose track of where everyone is.
It's a hot mess of nested rule sets. Each player can do different things in different parts of the pitch AND each player has four stats that determine their basic abilities AND the basic abilities of all players can be affected by the proximity of their team mates (pressing) and/or opponents AND each player can have a "special ability" which can be brought into play depending on external events such as their proximity to opponents and their position on the pitch AND - the cherry on top of this nonsense cake - there are RNGs to determine final outcomes. It's like chess where all the pieces look the same, the moves they can make change according to a rule set that's more complex than the basic rule set, and even though the numbers give a very clear indication of outcome it will often all be for nothing because the dice didn't wobble in the expected way.
One final problem. The pitch is seven by ten, meaning seventy squares, with 22 players crammed in there. Each play lasts two virtual minutes, during which you can make three moves (unless you activate some ability or special skill successfully), and the complexity of the nested rule sets is compounded by a lack of turn time and game length.
The other football mechanics are less complex but a wee bitty janky, like penalties and corners etc.
I can see this game had a great start, but as the complexities of the real world met the feverish brain of the designer (apologies to the designer, I'm just joshing) the desire to have a full model of reality overwhelmed the whole point of playing games - fun!
This just isn't fun, even for someone like me who loves the whole idea of a great turn based football game.
There are positive reviews here, so someone loves this game, but my brain simply cannot handle the layers of obfuscation.
Do you know that sort of games that confuses complexity with frustration? this is one of them.
First they'll let you win some matches, but afterwards they'll show you their real face.
Don't let the 250+ hours fool you, I have almost as many on the Switch port. It's such a nerdy game and i love it. It confuses all my friends who wonder "what the heck kinda game did he put this many hours into?" but here i am anxiously awaiting the next iteration (2025) because the strategy + depth of career + uniqueness + challenge + balance is really unmatched in Football (Soccer) Management Sims. The devs remain active in the community and are always friendly and engaging. If you like management games, buy this one, it holds up.
.
Football Tactics & Glory (FTG) has certainly exceeded my expectations. A non-violent game (except for the occasional red card), you can play it casually or take it seriously and devote a lot of time and energy into developing your club from amateur nobodies to the best club on the continent (or the world with Manager's Journey). Bear in mind, I have only played the game with Football Stars DLC or with Football Stars and Manager's Journey DLCs. Also I have never played any other football managing game because reviewers indicated that they're extremely time consuming. With FTG, however, I find you can still enjoy it, while having a full time job as a professional and raising a family.
It has offered me so many unforgettable moments like when my star player, the top striker in the Budesliga and I dare say Europe, kicked the ball like he's an infant who just barely discovered his feet allowing us an ignominious defeat or when seasons earlier my underdog, struggling club beat the top German club by exploiting their defense with sound tactical execution. Or when your goalkeeper is the thin red line that is keeping you from getting absolutely destroyed or when my new goalkeeper flopped around like a fish out of water missing goal after goal. Or the time when we reached the championship match of the European Cup and sent Manchester FC home as second best. Or when Regensburg FC dominated me for years on end, then we finally beat them and then beat them again.
It's a thinking man's game that will punish or reward you. It won't ask for forgiveness or permission; when the clock runs out and you're down, it's over and you lose. However, there's always another chance, a chance to change tactics, a chance to stop repeating the same dumb mistakes, a chance to win a championship or advance to the next league or it may be another tough season where defeat is more common than victory and you face the humiliation of relegation. In the end I tell myself: “There are some defeats more triumphant than victories.” -Michel de Montaigne
Yes
I don't know anything about soccer, football or why the dude with the whistle wont stop blowing it. I do know its x-com meets pong and its awesome.
One of the most unique games out there when it comes to football.
You can truly bond with players when you are starting from the bottom.
You can create your own team and gameplay at times is RNG, but to be honest - football at times is also RNG.
If you like chess, strategy and football - enjoy.
Ideal for the Steamdeck. Certainly a different take on football management, but a refreshing one for sure (and I've been playing footy management games of various ilks for over 30 years now)!
One thing I would say is that, if you do decide to give it a go, save up and buy the game and all DLC's at the same time. You'll thank me for it, believe me!

"dammit"
If you like tactical games, you've got to play this!
Great turn based tactical football game
XCOM vs. Football Manager - for the few turn-based strategy sports games in the market this is a pretty good one. It scratches an itch, at least. Looking forward to seeing what the sequel has to offer.
Consultant taught me everything he know.
