Version 1.2 introduces a brand new scoring system and features new special abilities. Save up on extra-lives in the Bank of Hearts and reap the rewards such as auto-flagging or securely opening tiles. Players who pride themselves in good memory and fast sweeping skills get the points they deserve and new challenges they seek. Fine Sweeping!

About the Game

Fine Sweeper is a re-envisioning of the good old casual game we’re all familiar with since Windows 3.11 came along, and we collectively sunk millions of productive hours into an ugly little thing called Minesweeper. Still itching for a fix but you can’t look at the hopelessly outdated and functional presentation any more? Now there’s cure: Fine Sweeper inherits and expands upon the best traits of the genre.

Players who just randomly clicked tiles open in past and never got the addictive rules have the option to learn the mechanics with a little tutorial slideshow. Seasoned players can test their abilities in the “Classic Mode” without extra-lives. Or set up your game independent from the campaign mode to either be a stroll in the park or a dash Through the Fire and Flames.

The campaign offers levels increasing in difficulty and size of the playing field while staying true to the core mechanics. It offers newcomers and veterans a challenge without the game being unfair, item drops will help you progress, and a little mishap near the end doesn’t mean “Game Over” right away.

Further, Fine Sweeper is now integrated into Steam: There are 18 + 1 achievements waiting to be unlocked, global and local leaderboards, your progress and settings will be synced with the Steam Cloud so you can keep progressing no matter where you are.

Please note: Fine Sweeper won’t guarantee guessing-free boards, there’s always an element of luck involved to progress (especially on higher levels), still your first click remains always safe.

I love Minesweeper and have been wishing for a game that builds on the original in a way that feels significantly additive. This unfortunately is not that. Looking for regular Minesweeper with minimal added variation? Then this is it. But my quest for a true follow up to the original continues.

Minesweeper + Quality of Life Improvements = Fine Sweeper
---

If it wasn't obvious enough from the store page, Fine Sweeper could easily be called a clone of Minesweeper. But it's not quite a clone, it's a much improved variant that offers a greater sense of progression, less random failures (that aren't your fault) and numerous other (minor) improvements that total up to a much better game than the one it's cloned from.

If you already know what Minesweeper is and want a better version of it, this is a no brainer. It's a cheap and pleasant way to kill some time and play with brain teasing puzzles.

If you aren't familiar with Minesweeper, it's a classic game that used to be included with early versions of Windows operating systems to give people a fun way to practice their mouse clicking skills (yes, prior to a mouse being a ubiquitous and common tool, people honestly didn't know how to use the thing well). These days (for whatever reason) it's no longer included by default with Windows 10, but can be found for free through various sources.

Sometimes you just want a simple relaxing series of puzzles to chip away the hours.
---

EDIT: I've been playing this game a lot more lately. I guess I just have a thing for simple puzzles and minesweeper was something of an addiction 30 years ago, so here we are all over again. If I have one issue with this game it's the repetitive music. Of course, most of you already know how easy it is to solve that: Just turn down the music (not the sound effects) and listen to your own music.

Well, just for the heck of it, here's what I've been listening to while playing:
Tech N9ne Radio (Channel) on Pandora (music streaming service)

If you are outside of their service area, might I suggest looking for something like Great Dane - Alpha Dog or Tech N9ne all 6's and 7's.

General:

Rating: None (Probably E though)
Price: $2.99
Genre: Puzzle
Time played: 2.5 hours

Did you enjoy minesweeper? This game is a minesweeper variant with extra features. You get lives, there’s score keeping and of course Achievements. As a fan of minesweeper I really enjoyed the game.

Gameplay - 9

This is a pretty niche type of game. If you don’t like minesweeper you probably won’t care for this game. If you have never played the game the basic idea is that you are sweeping for mines. You pick a square and if it’s not a mine. Good job. If it is you blow up. Now if it’s not a bomb it will either be a blank space or a space with a number in it. If it’s blank. Move on to another space. The number tells you how many mines are in the 8 squares around that 1 square. From there it’s just using logic to figure out where the mines are located.

Story - N/A

Graphics - 8

Pretty decent, easy to read and there is no confusion. Not much else to say.

Controls - MouseKeyboard -10

You left click to uncover a single square, right click to mark mines. Left and right click on a number, that already has associated mines marked, and it’ll clear out all the area it can around.
That’s pretty much it, you can also mark ?’s but I take off that feature in options.

Repeatability - 8

It’s mine sweeper, you’re going to be playing the levels over and over. There’s an achievement to get to level 7 in less than 1 minute. Not impossible, but difficult enough that you’ll be playing the first 6 levels over and over a few times.

Music - ???

It’s there? Usually while gaming I listen to my own music, unless it’s a sound based game.

Multiplayer - N/A

Pretty sure there is not multiplayer, but there are online leaderboards.

Initial Thoughts:

Oh a minesweeper type game. I haven’t played that game since I was a kid. Interesting you can earn extra lives and such.

Soma Says:

Normally I like to put in a good 10 or so hours into a game before reviewing it. However, this game is an easy exception. I’ve put 100’s if not 1000’s into the original minesweeper. I live an exciting life as you can tell.

The addition of extra lives is a good one, it’s frustrating to hit a mine because you made a stupid mistake and have to start all over. This is just a more forgiving version of minesweeper.

If you enjoyed minesweeper you might want to pick this up. If you like sudoku puzzles or any type of logic puzzles this is a game you will most likely enjoy. Also it’s 3 bucks. Not exactly breaking the bank here.

If you liked Minesweeper, you'll like this game. A well-made, enjoyable re-make with a few extra features that make it more addicting (ie. campaign mode). And the music reminds me of Streets of Rage, which makes me happy.

I'll admit that the original minesweeper from the 90's was my favorite way to procrastinate and waste time whenever I had important assignments due or serious finals to study for. I've spent hours playing it straight into the wee hours of the morning only to realize at 6am that I was completely screwed because I hadn't yet started writing that essay or even cracked open a text book. Nothing like turning on the computer with the very best of intentions and thinking "hey I'll just play one game to get my brain going before I get started" only to fail miserably every time. Ah, the nostalgia...

If you were a fan of the original minesweeper, this game is a must have for your steam library. It plays much like the original and has some added improvements which makes it even more addicting if you can believe it. Multiple modes are included in the game, my favorite one being the campaign mode which progressively gets harder the more you advance. I've long since collected every achievement in the game but I keep playing it because the challenge is so enjoyable .

I find this game to be very satisfying and relaxing but I don't think everyone will feel the same way. If you are on the fence about it, I would suggest playing the free 90's version first to see if you enjoy it at all. If you don't, you likely won't like this one either.

UPDATE 11/26/17: I am nominating this game for the "No Apologies" award category in the 2017 Autumn Awards. As of today I am STILL playing this game, and no one I know in real life can understand why I'm so into it. I don't really understand it either but the important thing is I'm still having fun and don't care what anyone thinks. =)

A decent expansion of the gameplay of windows minesweeper with a smoother difficulty curve, a scoring system to reward being able to play quickly while still being accurate/correct, and a campaign mode where you can accumulate lives and try to progress as many levels as you can without making too many mistakes or losing out when forced to guess from multiple possible solutions, while the purist can play in classic mode for the same game play as the original if desired.

Overall it plays very smoothly, has a good range of options over the original concept it expands on, and could keep you occupied for many hours.

pros:
- it's just the minesweeper we know!

cons:
- it's just the minesweeper we know..

No but seriously, I got it with a coupon for cheaper, I wouldn't have bought it for full price. I just like minesweeper and my OS doesn't have it. I could perhaps play it online free somewhere, but now I have it in my steam library and it looks somewhat decent.

One thing that I find annoying is, you can't restart a new game. You HAVE to purposely die so you can select a new game. Otherwhise your only option is to 'resume' the old game.

For those who've never run a Windows device, or are just too young to have really caught the original game in its prime, back in the day when you had to open a hatch and shovel coal in to power your PC, or sacrifice some of your blood into the little funnel on the top and get it to run for an extra 66.06 minute's worth of use, there were two games that were all the rage for everyone from the lowliest peasant to the wealthiest king, many of which would spend literally millions on a new machine just to play them and nothing else. I am of course talking about Solitaire and Minesweeper. Solitaire has already seen several enjoyable re-workings, but now it's Minesweeper's time to shine with a modern update in the form of Fine Sweeper. And you know what?... It ain't half bad.

Presented with a grid full of square panels that are hiding several mines underneath, you click on a panel and reveal some blank spaces and some numbers. Each number represents how many mines surround that tile, and based on that information, you must deduce the locations of every mine and avoid them as you click and remove all the unoccupied panels on the board. With each cleared grid, you move on to another that's either bigger and/or has more mines hiding from you. Make a mistake and you'll have a fully primed ball explode in your face. Do that several times, and it's game over.

The difference with this update is it's far more lenient than its original granddaddy. You now have hearts that allow you some breathing room where each heart will give you a free pass should you click on a mine, more of which can be found hiding under some random squares that can be used to replenish your stock and give you more room for mistakes. Or, alternatively, instead of using them you can save them in a bank and eventually cash them in for special, one-time use abilities to help you clear the board. And for hardcore score enthusiasts, this version has scoreboards for you, too, along with additional methods of play available to maximise that goal.

A little extra flair is added with some clean, appealing visuals (the grid and its surrounding boarder resembling the top-down dungeons from the original NES Zelda) and some funky bass licks to keep the mood up from stage to stage. It's all perfectly pleasant and functional and serves as a nice, relaxed, modern take on a fun but dated classic. I'm not sure how many stages there are, as I stopped at the 50 required for the achievements, but with multiple stages of increasing difficulty, a custom mode with sliding scales of variables, and a sweet little price to boot, for fans of Minesweeper, whatever your flavour is, this has you covered. Although, even in this updated version, clicking on the wrong mine in a final 50/50 situation and wasting the past 20 minutes of your life never stops hurting.

A nice presentation of Mine Sweeper with a couple of nice, new features.

Auto-Clearing Option:
If you right-click on a cleared tile with a number (indicating how many bombs in it's surrounding tiles), and you have that number of marked tiles surrounding this number tile, all un-marked tiles will auto-clear. Just be sure you marked the right tiles or the revealed bomb will detonate. If you do not have the correct number of marked/flagged tiles around a number tile you can safely right-click on it to hilight the surrounding tiles and no new tiles will clear. This feature increases the flow of the game tremendously.

Health:
Each time you detonate a bomb, you will lose a heart. Lose all of your heats and it's game over. When clearing tiles, replacement hearts will randomly appear as well as extra heart tiles to increase your total number of hearts up to seven. I really like this approach, but I feel the game is too generous with how many hearts it gives you. This makes the game a bit too easy. It removes the tension you normally get when you play classic Mine Sweeper and you don't know if you are a mouse-click away from your explosive doom.

Graphics:
Simple space background graphics. The planets are drawn crudely. Subtle animated smoke and dust effects when tiles are cleared and when bombs detonate. There is room for improvement, however: Early levels (below 35 or so) have fewer total tiles. The smaller tile graphics from later levels are used in these early levels and scaled up. This makes the graphics look soft. After you reach level ~35 everything looks sharper because everything is displayed in actual size. Separate, larger tiles should have been created for these early levels so the graphics could look just as sharp as they look in later levels. The entire game download is under 60 megabytes. The developer had no reason not to create an extra set of larger tiles.

Aside from the soft graphics I meantioned just one paragraph ago (Remember?), the presentation is decent. It could have looked even better with more dynamic lighting. The tiles in this game are all evenly lit making them look like they could have been presented on a 16-bit console (other than the smoke and particle effects).

The game does present some fun graphics pop-ups that appear with certain achievements along with animated fireworks. If you have any achievements in Pinball FX2 you know exactly what I am talking about.

The game has modes other than classic mine sweeper, but I have not tried them yet. I've reached level 38 in the main game and I can easily recommend this game for it's low price, clean presentation and the auto-clearing feature.

"Windows Minesweeper clone with heart containers and different gamemodes"

You can either switch it back to classic mode which is like original Minesweeper (1-life option).
Pretty cool is the custom mode where you create your own field size (up to 36x22) and decide how many bombs you want to hide (max 790). In Normal mode you ascend levels with rising field sizes. There are also challenging timegoals to reach. Most grinding was to step on 5k bombs and set 50k flags.

Fine Sweeper is, well, Minesweeper, but with some changes which I found to enhance the basic experience. The game is immediately familiar to anyone who’s played Minesweeper, and it also has a tutorial for anyone who hasn’t.

The main mode of the game is a “campaign” style mode – you basically start with a tiny board to clear, and each time you win you progress to a slightly more difficult board (the backgrounds and colors vary as well). Pretty soon (and I do mean soon, it doesn’t take long to progress through the early levels) you’ll be playing on boards even more difficult than the “Expert” boards from Minesweeper. As you play through the campaign, you earn points for each mine you flag and each board you clear – and you can compare your scores to other players’ on the leaderboards.

This leads me to my only complaint – there’s no way to save your campaign progress. When you quit the campaign, your score is reset. You can still start at the highest level you’ve unlocked, but your score starts at zero. A single save slot would allow you to continue the game through more than one session.

As you play, you randomly unlock and find lives, which are used up whenever you detonate a mine. This single-handedly fixes the main frustration I have with Minesweeper – there’s no second chance if you guess wrong. Of course, once you run out of lives your game is over, but at least some of the frustration has been alleviated.

Custom game boards are included, so you’re able to create your own challenges. And if you’re not a fan of the new lives mechanic, you can play in “Classic” mode to disable it. The developer has proven to be very responsive as well, pushing out updates quickly and regularly based directly on community feedback.

Fine Sweeper provides a comprehensive Minesweeper package and improves on the classic. It’s more than worth the low price point.

Full review.

Exactly what you expect: A minesweeper clone with a few extra features

The "main" mode of the game puts you on a progressively harder sequence of levels. You start with 2 hearts (lives), which you can refill/increase from hearts hidden under tiles. The aim is to beat as many levels as you can before you run out of hearts.

Pros:
- Your very first move will always be a miss. I believe the bombs are placed after this. Maybe this is a bad feature, but no one likes to lose on their very first move.

Cons:
- No "restart level" button

If you want to play minesweeper, this game has you covered.

This game has perfected Minesweeper. You progress through levels of increasing difficulty and best of all it's very forgiving of mistakes and accidents because you have a handful of lives (hearts) plus random chances of finding more hearts under the tiles. Alternating color schemes for each level keep things fresh and some of the achievements are quite a challenge.

It's a light game but if you're a fan of Minesweeper then the small price is absolutely worth it.

As much as I love minesweeper I just can't recommend this game. There isn't enough new and the new stuff isn't up to a good enough standard.

As soon as I saw this game on steam I had to buy it. I am a huge minesweeper fan and I just couldn't pass up a new version of it being released. However this game isn't much better than the original.

The main mode that this version features is a continuous mode. This mode continues going with levels of increasing difficulty. They basically increase the difficulty by growing the board size and adding more bombs. The score increases as a sum of all the levels you do and it measures the time you take on each level. This is incorperated into a high score system that lets you compare your score with friends and other people. This is a nice addition that gives a new reason to play minesweeper.

However the problem with this mode is that there is no way to save it. I found myself going on a continuous run for over an hour earlier today. At that point I was getting pretty tired of it. I would have liked to quit the game and continue it later. But this wasn't possible since the game offers no way of saving it.

But this isn't the biggest problem the game has. It is horrible to play as you get further into the game with bigger boards. It is basically a guessing game at this point. Very little skill is involved. This is because the game puts you in situations where no amount of skill will let you figure out where there is a bomb and where there isn't so instead you just have to guess and hope for the best. I know this was a problem in the original minesweeper, but it definitely wasn't as big as a problem as it is in this game. When you get later into the game, i'd say around level 30ish, you start having to guess so often! This wasn't a fun experience and it isn't in the true light of minesweeper to have to guess instead of use skill.

The game does attempt to counteract this problem in a way. They use a life system. You find lives under blocks that you clear on the level which you can add to your collection. Everytime you hit a bomb you loose a life. Some people that are perhaps less skilled at minesweeper may like this addition. But to a hardcore player who has been playing for a long time this isn't of much use to me. I would much prefer to have only one life. I would prefer it if they would fix the guessing issue instead of using this lazy alternative to fix it. They don't even have an option to disable the life system which I would have done.

What I used to love about the original minesweeper is the ginourmous size boards you could make and play on. Whenever I played it I used to make one of the biggest boards possible and then I would end up playing for about half an hour or so just on the one board. Fine sweeper features a similar mode to setup a custom sized board. But is no where near the scale that you can do on traditional minesweeper. In fact the boards are puny in size compared to the original. It's quite laughable to see it actually. Even when you go to the biggest scale possible. I have no idea why the developer limited it so much!

The options menu of the game is also extremely lacking. The only option of note is the audio sliders of which there is a seperate one for music and for other sounds. It's also probably worth noting that the music and sounds aren't particularly good in my opinion. I had them off for my entire time playing it. And the only other option there really is the nostalgic colours option. That is it. They could at very least have some resolution options or something else!

There was only one thing in this game that I could find that may lead you to play this instead of the original minesweeper. The graphics. They are such an improvement over the classic original minesweeper. Although i'm sure you really need it to play a simple game like this. If only the developer could have put as much effort into making the game unique and work properly as they put in on the graphics!

Overall I cannot recommend this game. There are so many issues that it isn't actually fun to play. Theres not enough different for anyone to even consider playing it over the original. I am gonna go back to playing the original as well and I think you should to. I would also like to take the time here to recommend a great alternative to minesweeper that improves drastically on the original formula and of which I greatly enjoyed called "hexcells". If your a minesweeper fan and your wanting something new go and try that instead of this game.

TheIronicGamers rating system

  • Don't ever buy this game.
  • Maybe consider it on a sale.
  • An average game.
  • A good game that should definitely be considered.
  • [*]A must play!

At it's base it's a polished version of Minesweeper with progression to feed gratification and lives to continue playing if you make a small hiccup.

Unfortunately, there are some negatives which I hope will be patched in at a later date, these would include:

First click not being an island--This is a fairly basic mechanic featured on some of the more simpler versions of Minesweeper found on the web. Not sure why this wasn't included from the start, since otherwise you are taking random guesses and unfairly losing lives (albeit there are some situations you have to guess no matter what, but the first click shouldn't be it).

When you set off a bomb it changes the numbers around the explosion--When this first happened and a 2 changed to a 1, I didn't realise and thought "Oh, so the bomb went off on the one so I'll free these other spaces around the 1" and then set off another bomb. Maybe some people prefer this but I feel like it's misleading and completely interrupts my flow and I have to re-read the board to make sure the numbers that may have changed don't have the appropriate amount of flags already.

Along with this, when a bomb explodes, the numbers underneath are barely readable. As well as numbers underneath heart pickups, and the very font to be honest is a bit poor. I would much prefer a clear-cut font like the font used to display the amount of bombs left on the map to be used, perhaps it can be a customisable option or something.

The Game Over screen completely covers the board when you die, which is frustrating because you can't see your mistake and learn from it.

And finally, I looked at the 'things to come' screenshot quickly from the Dev (couldn't find a list of things he's patching otherwise I might have left some things off this list if he's patching them) but the colour contrast on the new colours for numbers looks quite poor and hard to read on darker levels--while not officially a thing that can be reviewed right now since it's not even in the game, I thought on the off-chance the dev reads this he can brighten up the colours for the numbers a bit.

Criticism aside, it's a nice looking iteration of Minesweeper and £1.59 isn't much to pay for a game which you can easily lose 30 mins or so of your day every time you load it, which adds up if you pace yourself. I would recommend, and I hope the dev updates it to become even more polished.

I would love to see more illustrations from the artist featured in the game some how too, they are quite lovely.

Whichever way you may view this game, it definitely builds upon the original Windows game, Minesweeper. Although not a direct sequel, it keeps with the spirit of the original, adding many more features, options, challenges, achievements, steam high scores and much more.

I supported this Indie Dev for $2. That's one Cheeseburger I don't mind missing out on.

Minesweeper is a classic. I think most people on the planet know of it's existence since Windows 95. It was once a way to cure boredom, something to do when parents were on the phone and stopped you from using the internet, or when the internet just decided to drop. Most people, at some point or another have played it for whatever reason..

Still with the same rule; avoid mines at all costs.

Now, it returns with an updated face, more levels, awesome sounds - along with a catchy tune to play it to and different backgrounds per game.

Return to the rage with Fine Sweeper. The original Minesweeper with a few extra twists that make it even more addictive but also more infuriating. Giving a little bit more of a chance to progress easier with life pick-ups and pick-ups to make your heart bar grow, it also comes adapted with; item drops, leader-boards, trading cards and achievements.

However, something they seem to have left out in Fine Sweeper is a good start, which I believe was introduced from Windows Vista on. While Fine Sweeper does seem to mostly prevent the first click from being a mine, it's quite likely that the clicked square is a 1 or greater, meaning you'll have to click somewhere else on the board randomly until you finally do find a good place to start, this was a slight embuggerance when it came to starting and instantly loosing a heart due to it being a bomb, or just hitting endless numbers higher than a 0.

None the less, new or old fan of Minesweeper, this is a great add to your library. Especially for all you Windows 8 people who miss out on the classic Minesweeper completely.

Ok, I was really hoping this would be what it said on the tin - a fine version of Minesweeper. And on most accounts it is, with visually appealing graphics, increasing difficulty, a life system, and an actually included right click number mechanic (although that really should be double left click). However, there is one major flaw. In Minesweeper, the first square you click should always be an empty space. Every. Single. Time. This accomplishes two things - one, making sure you don't hit a bomb on your first click, and second, setting up the rest of the board so you don't have take a leap of faith on you're second click. Somehow, the developer managed to miss this crucial game mechanic, that quite frankly makes the game infuriating and unplayable without. This game also suffers from a lack of features, some promised and some that can be found on free javascript versions online. The promotional video promises "heath pick ups and power ups," but only delivers on the first of those promises. The so called "custom" game mode only allows a laughable 18x11 grid. It has a pause function, but the only way it can be activated is if the window looses focus. Since I would not recommend anyone wasting $2 on this unfinished game, and you've made it this far, if you're looking for a minesweeper with more features and customization then you know what to do with, I'd suggest Mines from Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection. If you're looking for a visually appealing and highly polished version of minesweeper, go download Microsoft's version from the windows store. We're not stuck in 1992.
