This is an absolut killer game. Strategy well done. I simply love the animations, audio is superb and it is so easy to understand, which I can't say of all strategy games. I highly recommend this.
Steam should remove the multiplayer and coop info AS THEY DO NOT EXIST!
The only reason I purchased this, for myself and a friend, was to play multiplayer.
This does not exist, and to add insult to injury, we were fooled into believing that we had to play until level 6 to "unlock" multiplayer (thereby preventing us from getting a refund)
This is an absolute scam. 100% avoid this title if you have any intention to play multiplayer.
Also take not of Carbon Games' business practices (lying about features that do no exist and tricking customers out their refunds)
According to other reviews the multiplayer has not been working for ages.
If you are a "singleplayer only" guy like myself and like this kind of strategic games, I can recommend this one.
The game is well made and looks great in VR. It feels amazing to be in the middle of the action.
The only thing I have not been able to handle is using both hands for anything other than movement and zoom of the map. There are two modes: Virtual cursor and laser pointer. I prefer the second one.
Sometimes the laser pointer of my right hand stopped working. Had to switch modes twice to bring it back.
Purchased (and told others to as well) because the Steam page clearly states it's COOP. Even the description says the same. Tried getting it to work, and it would not. Reviewed the forums and people repeatedly state that pvp and coop options are broken, but the devs do not respond. I jumped on their discord, and asked the devs about it, repeating the question over and over for the period of a MONTH. Finally "InsaneFirebat" from Carbon responded stating the following:
"We cannot patch AirMech Command at this time. The multiplayer issue was trivial to fix, but the game was not in a state where we could put out an update. We've been doing a lot of other things with VR since Command and the engine has gone through many changes. Patching now would break more than it fixes."
Steam store page aside (because I can't edit it), the multiplayer issue will be fixed when we get Command caught up. The only versions of AirMech that have no foreseeable future are on consoles. There just isn't an ETA for it.
Carbon is small, and bills have to be paid if we want to keep making games. We've done this sort of thing to the other versions and even Command before. Can't keep every game up to date at the same time, so some of them go without updates while something else is going on. It's very unfortunate that Command lost its multiplayer in that time, but there's not much we can do about it right now.
Eventually, we'll make our way back around to Command. And Wastelands. And Strike."
Well, that's fine n' dandy, but they're still selling a product to customers falsely advertising it, and part of SELLING your games is that they're paying your bills. Us buying a game is part of that. They act like the game itself is the burden, but if they fixed it, it wouldn't be as much as more people would buy their games. But not when your reviews says "mixed" simply because you won't fix something and lie about it being a feature to anyone who comes around.
I really wanted to give the game a good review because it has a lot going for it, but this is just bad business.
Do NOT purchase this game if you have any plans on playing mutiplayer. It may state it has multiplayer, but it does not. They have totally lied to you. The developers know it does not work but refuse to fix it, answer any questions about it or even acknowlege its broken. Follow the game on Discord, the issues are there for everyone to see. The multiplayer button in the game is disabled so you can't even try it if you wanted to.
Stay away from this developer who have abandoned this game. They take your money and do not provide any response or updates.
Steam should force the game provider to update the game description or even force them to remove the game from steam.
I am truly pissed off at the devs of this game. There are many, many people complaining about the multiplayer being greyed out and not usable. the only reason I bought this for me an my friend was to play multiplayer. No explanation. No nothing. Really, really crappy behaviour.
Returning it!
Tried several times to do multiplayer VR with a friend but the options were always grayed out (only Practice was selectable.) I did the tutorial and practice and I could see this being a serviceable RTS game, but again multiplayer just didn't work at all for some reason.
Controls also felt a bit clunky. The default selection method was super weird. Where you pointed was not where your cursor was. Luckily there was an option to switch to a more standard VR targetting laser sort of selection. I wasn't a fan of the rest of the controls either. Selecting units and telling them where to move often took a couple of tries to get right for example.
If you aren't sure if you should buy this, go try the free to play Airmech Strike game. Plays very similar to that, though this is tougher to control in VR (at least with this Vive controller setup.) If you like that free non VR version, and you don't have the issue I did with the game modes being grayed out then you may like this. This does look pretty polished overall compared to many VR games.
What an extraordinary game. If you like entertainment... get it!
Mechs, squad building, strategy, action, tower defence, with direct or automatic control of your Commander/Trainspotter(C), all with 'animated' Viewmaster(TM) visuals. I thought I imagined all this stuff in my head, when I was a kid, but I was just reading the future.
I feel sorry for picking "not recommended".
I mean this game is correctly finished and far from a tech demo or a crappy port. Graphics are good, UI is well thought, even the choice between virtual cursor and laser pointer is a great addition.
There are tons of different units, you must choose your unit set carefully or you will have a vulnerability (air, ground, repair, management, ....).
Campaign is meh (no story, just doing maps with increasing difficulty to unlock stuff), but have enough content to be enjoyable.
So, why the downvote ?
Controls are a bit frustrating, as you absolutely cannot do any micro management. you just paint-select your group of units and give them a destination / target, and hope you have enough firepower to overpower the target location.
You can't assign a group of unit to a shortcut to micromanage your deployment, so faster units (usually the ones with less HP) will arrive first and get rekt before heavy tanking units arrive.
No micro management makes an assault just a swarm attack and let's hope for the best.
There's no strategy here, you don't plan an attack, you don't synchronize air troops with ground units, you can't separate things. It's more like a tower defense where you lead the swarm.
If that's your thing, then go ahead. If you want strategy, don't bother, you will end frustrated.
Great to see an RTS in VR! Makes good use of roomscale and is a lot of fun. If you like the genre, this game is worth getting, especially as there are not a whole lot of comparable options out there yet (that I know of).
Only have a few minor gripes, which might end up being fixed in a later version anyways:
1) Some aspects of the user interface can be a pain, such as selecting units with a cursor or laser--use a bounding box! Fortunately, the unit counts are small enough that this isn't a big problem and the rest of the UI is good once you learn it.
2) The NPC robots standing next to the map and flailing its arms around randomly doesn't make any sense...I try to just ignore it.
3) Some storyline (beyond short descriptions on maps) would really make the whole experience more immersive.
Other than that, excellent game!
Can't recommend a game that doesn't play. And I know I'm not the only one. I'm very disappointed because I wanted to play RTS in VR. They need to fix about a half-dozen critical issues before they should charge for this junk. Can't believe it originally was released at $50. On sale for $10 currently, but still not even worth that if you can't play. Will be requesting the first refund from Steam shortly. Not sure if they screwed up in a recent patch, but if you go to the discussion boards, you will see a bunch of people saying they can't play the game in the past couple months. Dev (InsaneFirebat) has responded to some of them, but apparently doesn't feel it necessary to fix a problem that prevents people from playing the game at all. It was obviously working fairly well at some point in time since the earlier review were so positive.
I was really hoping for better than what they delivered on. The concept is great. And I bought the same game on PS4 and enjoyed it on that platform, sin VR.
But, after 3 months from release, they really seemed to have just left this to die. The game lacks a good AI and good use of tools. When you turn into mech mode, good luuck keeping the battle going. Don't really have the energy to write a full review, as they obviously don't have the energy to put into the game...
UPD: Avoid. Devs basically confessed they are not planning to solve the issues for this game until stuff they are doing for f2p Airmech is done. This shows they have no commitment and no responsibility to the shipped product.
Original Review:
Damn shame they seem to have stopped working on it after the first patch. It's so sad that this game could be great with just a little bit more love from the developer. As it is - avoid. Too many annoyances that will infuriate you to no end.
Camera control when switching in and out of mech sucks
In game menus don't always work properly
Mech AI is a moron.
etc...
This is an enjoyable RTS-lite made for VR. The game features a variety of maps, 6 difficulty levels, over 60 (!) unit types and 8 different AirMech types. The controls take a little getting used to at first; a more in-depth tutorial would be welcome, but after an hour or so I got the hang of it. Maps feature pre-defined bases that you must conquer and hold, resulting in a back-and-forth struggle for map control. Bases can be outfitted with a variety of upgrades for everything from increasing money to a variety of defenses.
If I had one complaint, it's that the titular AirMech is a bit of a bozo. The AirMech AI is a tad weak leading to some frustration as your AirMech goes on one-way kamakazi runs. Fortunately the weak AirMech AI extends to the computer opponents and therefore can be exploited. The rest of the AI is good as far as pathfinding goes. I did have units get stuck a couple times, but with over 10 hours of gametime it was a minor issue.
The main "campaign" features a series of progressively harder missions. Early missions are quite easy, but there is some challenge to be found later on. My particular favorites were the maps where you had to defend a solo base against ever increasing waves of opponents.
Overall this is a well-polished entry into VR strategy games, a decent length campaign, and lots of variety of AirMechs, maps and units. Recommended.
First, let me say that I really like this game. It's fun, and a nice change of pace from the vr games I normally play. It's a lot of fun commanding an army and executing your strategies from atop the battle field like some sort of all seeing super commander.
That said, I'm struggling with the question of what VR adds to the RTS experience. Fundamentally, this is basically the same game for which there is a very popular non VR version. The only real difference is the player interface. The normal player interface has been replaced with you physically standing over the battlefield and looking down at the battle. Instead of a keyboard and mouse, you wave with your arms and click a button on the motion controller.
Don't get me wrong, I think this is pretty cool. It's just that the interface can feel a little clunky, so something like selecting units and assigning orders takes some practice. I'm getting better at it, but I often find myself frustrated at a lack of ui functionality that is present in a lot of games of the same type. e.g. (double clicking a unit type to select all units of that type).
Something else that's different is how you maintain general map awareness. Normally in rts games, you have to watch a minimap to track enemey movements as you go about your task. In VR, you physically look up and scan the horizon for enemy movement. The fog of war, is replaced with a radar overlay that shows you red dots for enemy position and movement. All of this I think is a genuine improvement on the genre, it can just be difficult to remember to look up every once in awhile.
My overall advice would be to avoid this game if you are a current hardcore RTS fan. I find that hardcore passion is very resistant to change, and this game turns many staples of the genre upside down. It's fundamentally the same thing, but with maybe one to many changes for the hardcore crowd.
If you're like me, and maybe used to be really into RTSs but kinda stopped playing them half a decade ago because who has the time to be uber micro and work fulltime anymore, this is a nice casual RTS with some interesting tweaks provided through a VR interface, definitely pick it up. I've really enjoyed it and you will too.
If you've ever played an RTS, you know the score. Generate "money", build units, upgrade buildings and tell your units to blow up the bad guys. None of that has changed.
BUT
AirMech's control scheme, and view of the battlefield gives a new perspective to the genre.
Being able to zoom, rotate, and drag the battlefield in VR really helps me with situational awareness, and gives a better sense of involvement, and presence. Also neat, is that there is an opposing commander on the other side of the "game board", so it really feels like two commanders looking over the battlefield.
I started with the "laser point" control scheme, but ended up switching over to "virtual cursor" after a while. The control scheme does take a bit to get used to, but once you understand how it works, it's actually well put together.
Pros that stand out to me:
Unlockables:
Finishing a practice mission, or normal mission gives "money" rewards, that can be used to unlock cosmetic items, and new unit types.
Unit choice:
You can build a "deck" of units that you can choose from, before you get into a game. These are not just variants of the base units, to choose from, but also things such as building "add ons" like money generator boosters, and shields, fixed artillery etc... In other words, tons of customization on play style. This isn't unique to this game, but the large variety is nice.
AirMech choice:
Your AirMech itself is a transforming super-robot, and there are different functional types to unlock, with differing capabilities. For example, it can be a walking unit, but can transform into a jet, or a helicopter. (there are many more types to unlock)
Cosmetic niceties:
You can have a "pet" that follows your airmech
Unlockable hats for your Airmech
Different skins for your airmech
Other things...
Graphics:
This is a really nice looking VR game. Color schemes vary from browns, to greens or greys, depending on the maps. The units are easily visible, and animations are smooth, and there can be a decent amount of detail to the map (moving trees) to the building (moving parts) Everything is bright, and I didn't notice any godrays. Nothing feels cheap or chintzy. You can tell that this was made for VR.
Audio:
Sounds great. Nothing is distracting, or annoying, and fits just right, thematically. You also don't have the constant unit acknowledgements like you did in classic RTS's, when you issued a command, so that's a plus. Also, there are individual volume controls, so you can change how loud certain aspects of the game are.
Multiplayer:
I tried for a Co-Op last night, but nobody seemed to be online. There is PvP, CoOp and solo practice offered, and a good variety of maps on hand. Can't comment on the actual performance or experience in multi yet, though.
Spectate:
You can watch multiplayer games, but no one was online, so I couldn't test this.
Performance:
I played the game with 1.2SS, with no issue. At 1.3SS, I would occasionally drop to the Steam background for a second or 2, when things got busy. Running an OC'd 1070 with OC'd i5 6600k. Otherwise, smooth, and no hitching. Zooming is fluid and feels good; no motion sickness, though I do have pretty good VR legs. Also note, I'm one of those people that can't tell when they're in reprojection, so take that for what it's worth.
Cons?
The control scheme can take a little bit to understand.
Suggestion to dev:
Allow the player to build multiple sets of custom unit decks, so you can choose from those premade sets when starting a mission or multiplayer session.
Include a super sampling setting or slider in the game.
TL;DR
The distinguishing factor for this RTS is the immersiveness of being above, or even on the battlefield. The control scheme, once learned, helps with this. All the other RTS related pieces are familiar, but well polished. If you have any interest in RTS's, or have never tried one, this is what might rekindle, or start up the love for them.
About me:
I've been gaming since my trusty Atari 2600, back in the 80's, and probably spent way too much time playing (non-profesionally) a ton of different genres, such as RTS's, spanning from the C&C series, AOE, Warcraft 2 & 3, etc, etc...
This well polished real time strategy / td game... addictive... sometimes games take several hours yikes! Help me! its a good thing!
After 40 hours of gameplay, I have unlocked mostly everything and made a couple new aquantences and are just as into RTS / TD as i am. 60+ different units to asign in your arsenal... geez Good deal! I welcome the challnge of new opponents, so join us in combat will you? Cant say enough positive things about this game.
As an HTC vive player, I like to stand up while playing to get a better perspective of the map. My neck gets tired after looking down for a while, so im hoping to see the option to re-posistion the map at a slanted angle in front of me so my head can take a more natural posistion. Oh and I prefer the laser pointer mode over the cursor style.
In regards to unit control, I often make accidental commands because de-selecting units is tricky. I have found that turning my Vive controller upwards to the airmech side and then back again is a quick way to de-select units. Maybe there is a button I dont know about.
What else... oh yeah, we need full descriptions of the airmech types and abilities / buttons
Cheers!
Really fun game! I don't usually enjoy RTS games but I picked this up because VR and COOP! The controls are simple enough and there’s plenty of different heads, (hats), that you can choose from to customize your main "Mech" if you're into that kind of thing. Would be cool if those heads showed up on your actual VR avatar for other players to see and not just the small unit. Controlling individual units in combat is awesome to, however i think it would be cooler if I could get even closer to the action and actually be one of the units, but that's probably beyond the scope of this game. Plenty of maps to choose from and plenty of Mech types to. I wish COOP was a little bit deeper and more collaborative. Right now, it's just choose a map and play. Add some special commander abilities like attacks you can earn such a missile strike an emp blast, or get creative! I'd be excited to see what you come up with. That's all just my opinion but overall amazing game!
I've only played it a short while, but the graphics and performance so far are really good. Outshines most of what is on the VR store.
I'm not sure I sold on the controls though, selecting and moving units can be a little difficult.
Overall, interesting.
I was interested in Airmech Command since I got a Vive, I played a bit of the original game way back a couple of years ago but AirMech Command has done what even the original could not do. The original operated on free2play microtransaction basis but Command does not and makes getting skins/units/mechs that would have either taken a lot of gametime or real money an easy enjoyable experience.
Pros:
-No Microtransactions (so far)
-Great Controls
-Graphics are great especially for VR
-The wow factor when you look at units, mechs and the battlefield is worth the price alone
Cons:
-maybe a little too easy in under 2 hours I completed 4 missions 2 of them being the max difficulty but still havent lost or had my base health go under 90% health
-I would like to be able to order my airmech to some extent where I can have him deffend rather than when not controlling the airmech it goes of and gets it self killed instantly.
