The Background Story
Deacon Oaks is a small and quiet town, where nothing bad ever happens. Sheriff Alex Truman has a peaceful life dealing with lost dogs, trivial disputes, and a few drunks here and there. He should be the happiest lawman in the world. But there's just one small part of him that longs for some excitement, for something that would break the monotony he doesn't even realise is eating him alive.
One cold November night it seems his unspoken wishes may have been granted when he’s involved in a car accident with a man who appears suddenly in the middle of the road. Alex is fine, but the man ends up in hospital with a broken leg, and several cracked ribs. Nobody knows who this guy is or where he has come from, and to make matters worse, he won’t speak. Finally the town has its first real mystery, and Alex is overjoyed. But that joy is to be short lived.
With no way of finding out the man’s identity, he’s moved to the local state mental health facility, and life in Deacon Oaks goes back to normal, until two months later when Alex gets a call informing him that the “road guy” has at last spoken. Three words were all he would say – “Cold Winter Farm, Cold Winter Farm, Cold Winter Farm”, over and over again.
Alex has no idea what it means, but he does know that Cold Winter Farm is on the edge of town, and that’s good enough. The mystery is back, and Alex wants to get to the bottom of it right away. Problem is, the biggest storm in fifty years is heading towards town – he’ll never make it out to the farm and back before the storm hits. But Alex doesn’t care – something deep inside is driving him – he has to know who the “road guy” is, and he has to know now. Abandoning all rational thought and ignoring the warnings of his deputy, he grabs the keys to the 4x4 and heads out.
Ten minutes after he arrives at the farm, the storm is so out of control, that it uproots a tree, which falls onto the house, crushing the roof, and trapping Alex in the basement. That’s not all though. The fallen tree has opened up a hidden doorway, which leads to a secret corridor. At the end of the corridor is an elevator, and the only place it can go is down. With no chance of being rescued until the next day, and with the overpowering need to find answers drowning out the fear he feels, Alex decides to take the elevator down.
But what will be waiting for him at the bottom? Will it explain the origins and identity of the “road guy”? Will it explain why the “road guy” was walking in the middle of the road, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the freezing winter? Will it explain why he wouldn’t speak for two months? And if it does, will the answers be simple, or will they be ultimately more disturbing and terrifying than anyone could imagine?
Enhanced Edition
The "enhanced" edition of Corrosion: Cold Winter Waiting has been converted from its original square (4:3) resolution of 1024x768 to a higher widescreen (16:9) resolution of 1280x720 to better suit widescreen displays.
Other updates include a new inventory and larger in game text for easier reading, as well as several general improvements throughout.

Extremely difficult, old school point-and-click mystery/horror adventure puzzler, that's only worth playing by using a guide (there's a really good one available). Corrosion feels very outdated, it came out in 2015 but it feels like a 90s point-and-click game. Personally I actually kind of like it, but it's tough to sell this kind of game to players in 2024.
The game is hard for all the wrong reasons:
- You can only move by clicking arrows on your screen
- You can only access items through certain angles while you see them clearly from clearer/other angles
- Puzzles range from obscure to outright nonsensical
- Items clog your inventory and some of them stay there forever while useless (of course you don't know which until you finish the game)
- Random doors unlock after certain actions/events without you ever knowing which ones and when
- You are often left clueless about to do next
In short, without a guide you will definitely get stuck very often, without having a clue about what to do next, how, or why. This ruins the experience, because there are positive aspects to the game but those can't compensate for the frustrating movement and absurd puzzles.
I willed myself to the end of the game using a guide, because I really liked the claustrophobic, cold and eerie atmosphere (graphics are cool, background music is fitting, audio logs are nicely done and journals are creepy), and although the story is far-fetched and kinda ridiculous, I liked it and wanted to see how it all ends.
If the mystery is appealing to you, if you can get past the clunky and frustrating navigation mechanic and if you use a guide to get through the numerous nonsensical puzzles, then you could give this a try, since the asking price is pretty low. Still, too many 'ifs' to really recommend this, although I do value story and atmosphere and the game really shines in those departments.
pros
✅ A well-written and intriguing Lovecraftian horror story about five hunters who have a troubled past voluntarily involved an organization (or cult) called Red Butterfly, and their mission fought a demon race called Blue Locusts. This demon can also possess and can use humans as hosts to do terrible deeds, so these five hunters aim to catch these humans, imprisoned in an underground facility, and torture them to the point they would commit suicide and be killed together with the demon who possessed them. There is also a side story about the military carrying out a secret war project under a doctor's supervision to use demons against enemies. you're playing a small town sheriff and investigating all this stuff.
✅ five different hunter's backgrounds and stories developed by well-written journals, papers, and audio records. these five characters and their leader have their unique personalities and stories.
✅ some fun to solve, complex and clever puzzles
✅ mild horror elements and creepy atmospheric environments
✅ background musics are bolstering the creepy atmosphere.
✅ decent length
✅ there are steam achievements and cards
✅ nice looking and enhanced pre-rendered background graphics
cons
❌game is using outdated Myst style first-person 360° wonky controls and views with bad camera angles. This makes the navigation nightmare.
❌unreasonably difficult puzzles with obtuse solutions make the gameplay frustrating. It is almost impossible to finish without a walkthrough. A hint system would be really helpful for obscure and directionless gameplay.
❌bland, identical, and gray environments. All rooms resemble each other, and that makes too much confusion about which way is supposed to go.
❌after all these multiple stories built up through journals, paper notes, and audio records, the conclusion is pretty abrupt, disappointing, and unfinished. ending that leaves a lot of questions unanswered about story.
❌clunky inventory management
❌there is constant backtracking between different rooms.
❌voice acting hit or miss
Overall, this is an above-average point-and-click puzzle-heavy adventure game. If you don't mind using a walkthrough for this game's obtuse and frustrating puzzles or you have a prophet's holy patience, you can enjoy this game.
