Stardust Vanguards is an older game from 2015. It's a venerable 9 years old at the time of this review. And it's an unusual game, being a console (PS4) ported 2D retro pixel (ugh) hybrid co-op/PvP local multiplayer brawler/bullet hell/soldier attack game where you fight with or against other players (if there were any, there are none) but also summon your own units to help fight for you. Some clever ideas all wasted on a console centric retro pixel garbage presentation and the bewildering decision to make the game multiplayer only but also without any online functionality (what were they thinking??).
One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience.
There's a multiplayer (PvP/Co-Op) mandate to the game (zero single player functionality), so you need to co-ordinate with your friends to play this... I guess that's easier for the developer than making a compelling single player experience. Creating content is hard! Why bother?
Like I always say, if the only thing that makes a game fun is your friends, that just proves it's fun to spend time with your friends, and doesn't say much for the game at all.
It's possible this limitation, which can be seen as a defect, is from some kind of console gamer mindset from the developers, who may be unaware that PC gamers don't need to pay additional money for online play. And while Steam offers some workarounds that may or may not work (Remote Play etc), there should be no expectation that the game can be played in the way the developer intended due to this deliberate design defect.
From a technical perspective, this PS4 console game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
PC gamers will be insulted by the presence of console peasant children's toy controller prompts, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for.
Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
Stardust Vanguards didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for winning a match while taking the heaviest losses, trivial to get, but less than 21 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Stardust Vanguards has the gamer gouging price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
great local 5min battles with friends. it's better with the more people you play with. Remote Play really makes this feel like an actual couch arcade experience
The game is F****** Good it is really fun to play with a group of friend just plug your laptop into the tv have hours of fun. I give 10 Hell Yes
Not a ton of replayability, but have some friends over and you'll get your money's worth out of the low price tag anyway.
Also, the soundtrack is fantastic.
Tried playing 4 player on a steamlink. Only player 1 worked, the other game pads (360 and ps4 controllers) did not work.
Game is fun, fast, light. If you carry around a set of controllers, you can waste time at your job or school playing this.
A must for old school gamers and Gundam-Robotech fans.
Alright... about 20 minutes into this I can easily say 'Get it now'. And by now, I mean while it's on sale at .99 cents. It's a steal, even if you play *local* co-op once in a blue moon. You can always play waves vs. the computer as well.
This game oozes 16 bit mecha style. The soundtrack is great as well.
Playing as something like a gundam in a sort of twin-stick shooter. You can engage your shields. Slice enemies with your energy sword, which also can bat away bullets with a well-timed movement. Or shoot some sort of energy gun with limited ammo. It goes all the way up to bullet hell levels.
So... if you like bullet hell, mecha, modern 16 bit intrepretations and saving money - this game is for you. There's nothing wrong with saving money, or eating before sundown.
Simple, yet fun and engaging game for people that still stay true to local multiplayer.
During the sales it'd be a waste not to buy this game.
There`s just one thing that's holding me off from playing it further in survival mode:
I appearently have too good reflexes for this game.
If I hit an enemy and instantly face the opposite direction (commonly known as hit and run) Ill get knocked back inside the enemy, which is a simple to fix and minor bug, but it makes the game somewhat unplayable for me.
Hope that gets fixed soon
A very fun and fast mecha game to play with friends. However, I have no friends to play localy with so kind of defeats the purpose. Would love online multiplayer or a lan feature but still, really fun and highly recomended
Pros:
-simple controls
-actuon packed combat
-great gameplay
Really fun, between the soundtrack and the screen being flooded with enemies and bullets, this game gets intense fast!
While I'd recomend this game to anyone, I do have only two issues:
1st; This game is local multiplayer only. If you don't have anyone to play this game with, your limited in your options and are likely not getting the full exp for the game.
2nd; And this goes hand in hand with the first issue; I really wish there was an online component to this, would make things way easier to play with friends.
Solid 8/10
I was shocked by how much I've enjoyed playing this game - but it is truly a great time. The fun of laser swords and bullet hell and the challenge/risk+reward of trying to build up more Reinforcement Points to summon in a major fleet to your aid...Awesome.
TLDNR: I Bloody love Stardust Vanguards very much.
Let me start off by saying I really love Stardust Vanguards a lot. Stardust Vanguards is a great Local multiplayer game, but unfortunately no online multiplayer. It has some of the most fun 4 player craziness. The deathmatch is a lot of fun. Especially when you unlock the custom deathmatch. I had a friend over and we played deathmatch with infinite bullets, full reinforcement points, and the maximum amount of pirate encounters. There was so much happening on screen that it was hard to keep track of it all. It was still a ton of fun, me and my friend were just laughing and having a great time. Then we moved onto conquest mode. The mode was alright though nothing too special. It was your average king of the hill style game mode. Now that is out of the way let us move onto what I feel is the main event. SPAAAAAAACE BALL, yeah that is right Space Ball. In my opinion this was the most fun and fast gamemode. Me and my friend started it up and were greeted with a map with lots of walls, a ball in the middle, and a base on each side. We at first thought we were supposed to kick the ball into the other teams base, but it turns out that was not the idea of the game. It turned out were were supposed the get the ball back to our base using our swords, boost, and bodies to move the ball around. The ball almost never went where we wanted it to. It would rather just ricochet all over every wall, only sometimes hitting into our base. Sometimes we accidentally got it in the other persons goal. We played about 6 rounds of Space Ball before trying out the Co-Op part of the game. The Co-Op was your standered survive for as many waves as possible without losing all your lives.
Pros+
+Great music
+Fast gameplay
+Amazing Deathmatch
+Supererd Space Ball
+Great looking retro graphics
+Great on the couch multiplayer
+Being able to hit bullets back at the enemy with your sword
+Great Framerate(over 700fps)
+It is under $5
Cons-
-No Online multiplayer
-Only okay King of the Hill game mode.
I love this game, but can not ignore the problems that hold it back from being a 10 for me so it is a 9/10
You have a laser-sword and fly a rocket-powered mech suit in *space*! This game is amazing.
Extremely well balanced and fun, you can customize matches to be as fair or crazy as you like. I love tons of battle events. The designers did a great job of making the game fast-paced and exciting - every move matters!
Highly recommended as a fast-paced fun action game with friends.
It's like a 4-way bullet hell game in space.
You pilot your Totally-Not-a-Gundam around the screen and try to kill all your friends.
Everything is a one-hit-kill, but you can reflect projectiles with your blade or use a Super Smash Bros. -style bubble shield to block. Alternatively, there's a little dash you can use to dodge or close in on an enemy.
The game gets really interesting when players collect "RP", because spending RP lets players call in units from offscreen. The more RP a player spends at once, the more units spawn in that wave, even spawning large cruisers with fighter complements when the player uses a full RP meter.
Every minute or two, special events happen. These are typically pirate attacks, where tons of NPC ships flood the map and try to kill *everybody*. There are also VIP targets of opportunity and bounties set on players who are doing really well. This keeps everyone on their toes and shifts the balance of power around enough that nobody ever really feels safe.
If you get tired of killing your friends, you can try your hand at the survival mode, which pits the four of you against increasingly-difficult waves of pirates and severely limits your ability to call in support. Alternatively, you can play Space Ball, where two teams compete to smack the Space Ball into a goal zone, much like air hockey or foosball.
It's great as a local co-op game, but at the time of this writing there's no online component. If you can't get anyone to play this with you locally, the only thing you can really play is the survival mode. It's not enough content for a solo player to really carry the game. Be warned that my recommendation comes ONLY with the assumption that you have enough people to play local co-op with, or a future update adding some form of online multiplayer.
Stardust Vanguards is a really good couch multiplayer game to play with some friends. I haven't been able to play a ton of this yet, but I highly recommend the game. The only complaint I have is that the random pirate attacks that can occur during typical deathmatch battles can be a bit overwhelming, but I've found I can choose to turn them off. It can quickly become a bit TOO hectic during some of the pirate invasions.
I highly reccommend this game. One of my favorite games on steam. Oh, and if you are reading this Zanrai, PLEASE add online play. Sure, it's not as good as local, but it's better than solo. I don't have many friends to play locally.
I LOVE this game! It's like Samurai Gunn in space with intense Gundam flare. If you want to see it in action, I played it recently on my local multiplayer Let's Play channel, Fourplay: Stardust Vanguards on Fourplay Show
so far i definetly recommend this game to anyone in any age group. the only thing is i just wish there was online multiplayer. :{
(Note: I've only played the single-player portion to any significant degree)
Although it's perhaps a little light on content for the price (especially for solo players), Stardust Vangaurds oozes style and boasts a rocking soundtrack to duke it out with friends to. With a few minor balancing tweaks in Co-op (keeping Reinforce points between waves to discourage just blowing them all constantly, always reloading bullets at wave-halfway marks rather than only if you're empty, allied ships sticking around rather than puttering off randomly) and perhaps some cheesy pixel style cutscenes, this would be almost perfect. Happy to see Zanrai coming out swinging with the first release.
Addictive little space combat game. Wish I had another ally/opponent to play against at the moment as it really is meant for a social setting. Would LOVE to see this in an arcade box since the style has 90s arcade written all over it. Great soundtrack and solid gameplay.
