This game is absolutely terrible. It looks, feels and sounds like shit. Considering that the best riichi games on steam are free, there is no reason for this to exist.

It's a great mahjong game if you want a straight and authentic game of mahjong. The cute girls are there for show, the main focus of this game is the mahjong game itself.

The name might seem a little off-putting for some, but if you want to delve into Japanese-style mahjong then this is pretty much the only option on Steam right now. The "Schoolgirl edition" is the same game just with a different skin.

GAMEPLAY

In terms of Riichi rules, the options menu allows you to configure the ruleset to your preference (length of game, red 5's, particular Yaku's etc).

The AI of each character is set to prefer a particular playstyle, to take extra risks in attack or be safer in defense, to favour melds or triplets etc.

Game progression is measured through unlocking characters, so you basically play each character to win a set number of times and unlock the next character. All the while the detailed stats page will keep track of all your results so that say after 50 or so games you will be able to analyse your playstyle.

There is also a list of in-game achievements but these are not rendered in Steam.

SOUND AND LOOKS

There are two language options, Japanese or English. The English translation is not very well rendered and does not seem to have been done by a native speaker. You should be able to figure it out though.

The 23 playable characters consist of happy picture & sound clip, and a sad one. That's it - you might find one or two annoying after a bit but if you keep your opponents randomised then you won't notice as much. There's nothing inappropriate for say ages 15 & over - some of the characters have revealing clothes or a large busom and that's that.

The music is OK but very repetitive. A couple of extra tracks could have made this much better.

The playfield is excellently rendered. You have a couple of options for viewpoints and table colour, and the display style is clear and intuitive. The tiles are neatly differentiated.

CONCLUSION

Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle is, at heart, a solid one-player Riichi Mahjong game which you can trust to bring your skills up to scratch, Beyond that, there's no multiplayer, so you will need to use this to "graduate" towards a web-based title.

I know this is the only actual riichi mahjong game on steam available (at least here) but honestly: there are better alternatives to this for free on PC, just not on Steam. The girls aren't even that pretty, the graphics are kinda poor, music is kinda meh, and I didn't see any option to keep original romanized names of everything (hands, pon/kan/chi etc.) which isn't much pain, but could be there...

And it has no netplay. You can just go play Tenhou, Sega NET Mahjong MJ or one of many other free options.

If you don't know how to play mahjong, this won't teach you anyway, so check out the free ones.

VERY highly recommended for this price ($1.49/2.49 bundle) if you ALREADY can play basic level riichi mahjong. It is a port of the best android riichi mahjong game (trust me I have played every android mahjong game), "Nagomi Mahjong," but it has kawaii girl-chans added in. Fair AI, there are about 20 characters with different AI but you must unlock the characters. Progression is good, it is not a grindfest for unlocks like other Japanese games (eg. get 1st 3 or 5 times with character).

In the bundle the two games are exactly the same except for the characters, however the schoolgirls characters are not as good. Still worth getting the bundle.

Game can go up to 1440p but is locked at 20fps. Does not made a difference because the game has no fluid motions. Game is singleplayer-only. Has very little fanservice. Family friendly tbh.

Okay, yes the selling point is the boobs, but I, being ace, get nothing out of them, so I actually bought it for the game. Also this review applies for the school girl version as well, just replace "boobs" with "tiny mini-skirts"

I'm a pretty avid fan of Cantonese-rules mahjong, and this game is pretty similar. However, I cannot recommend this game unless you already have at least a basic understanding of how to play the game - because this game just dumps you in there like a crazed scout leader, and if you don't know what you're doing, you'll lose quickly before you figure out how to play.

The game does toss you a few life-rings here and there, however. It will prompt you if you can call to pick up, or declare preparedness (it makes sense in context), and it will auto-sort. It won't let you move the cards around manually though - most won't mind that, but I, and the guy from Hong Kong who taught me how to play, often depend on doing that, so yeah...

The rules are actually extremely varied too - you can set all sorts of rules, such as your starting bank, what bonus cards are active, and even certain melds and hands. For a simple execution, it's very detailed in its guts.

The camera angle is stupid - set it to over-head or you'll miss what's being discarded - also, you can't ever see the whole table, so you need to move it around - it's not difficult, but it's very annoying to have to continuously do

And yeah, the boobs. ...If the reason you're buying this is to look lewdly at girls, I'd recommend getting something different. Go troll tsumino or something.

Interesting game but the english translation for the rules and how to play the game has much to be desired, perhaps a revision or maybe a turtorial round or something like that? Only would recommened if you can understand original rules or if you already knew how to play.

For this game I definitely need meh button.

Cons:
- Where is multiplayer?!
- Interface is not too smooth. For example you need to move screen if you want to check calls made by your opponents;
- Translation is terrible. Names of winning configurations (yaku)? Forget it! Of course they translated them into 'English' (for example 1.5 Slam! Yeah! It's obvious what made my eyes bleed) but I recommend switching to Japanese language (save your soul).
- 'Pretty Girls' voices are annoying.
- AI is well... not impressive.
- If you want to learn how to play riichi mahjong this game won't help you at all.

Pros:
- It's riichi mahjong (I guess the only one available at steam localized into English).
- Gameplay is nice, however I needed some time to get used to interface.
- I was afraid it would be mix of mahjong and dating sim. Thank goodness it's not ;) it's just mahjong with some animated girls.
- Girls appear very rarely on screen.
- You can mute all the sounds!
- Each opponent has set different playstyle.
- Mahjong is awesome ;)

My rating: 7/10

Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle is one of the few Riichi Mahjong game on Steam, and on PC in general.

Those familiar with mahjong puzzle games will find Riichi Mahjong quite different from them: rather than a puzzle, this is a competitive tabletop game with very complex rules. This game doesn’t have any kind of tutorial for those new to mahjong, but there are plenty of tutorials and rules guides available on the internet for those interested in learning it.

As someone who only truly learned mahjong over this game I can attest that it is a lot of fun even to those new to mahjong. So if you like mahjong or tabletop games in general, Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle has my full recommendation!

I actually was looking for a mahjong game worth buying. Unfortunately this is pretty much a tablet/phone app translated to PC and not a whole lot of effort made in the conversion. If you haven't learned the basics of Mahjong then you're going to be clueless (e.g. Dodger's video on Youtube of this game). If you have the basics down, you're still kinda playing blind but at least you have an idea of how to win.

For those who don't know: The game is pretty much like Rummy. You have to build "melds" that consist of 3 of a kind (Pung), 4 of a kind (Kong) or a run of 3 tiles in sequence (Chow). So you need 4 sets of melds (Kong, Pung, or Chow) and 1 set of two to win. The last tile you draw is not discarded and needed to "go out".

You can take tiles from the person to your left to make a "Chow" meld or you can be take from anyone to make a pung or kong meld. The other players can do the same (naturally) so you really need to be thinking about what you throw away as much as what you take. There's also a bonus to be earned from NOT taking any tiles from anyone, winning on a self-drawn tile rather than taking from someone else, and also a bonus if you call "riichi" and then win the hand (it's like throwing an extra 1000 points into the pot saying that you're about to win).

I've probably got some of the rules wrong because I'm not a hardcore player, but if you had no idea how to play and you're reading this, you now at least know a bit more. I hope you bought the game for the mahjong because the characters are pretty bland.

I learned how to play Mahjong from watching Akagi (an anime) and from playing a few other freebie mahjong games. While the presentation on this game is better than the freebies in some ways, in other ways it's lacking.

Things that could have made this game better:

  • multiplayer
  • more characters to start with
  • a basic ruleset to teach beginners
  • an advanced tutorial to teach intermediate players
  • an interface that does NOT seem like it was made for tablets or phones.
  • better voice acting/less annoying voice acting.
  • [*]a slower pace so you can see what's going on (for the beginners)

TL;DR

That's just a short list of things they could do to improve this.

Don't buy this if you're not a fan of mahjong. Even if you ARE a fan of Mahjong, you may want to rethink this.

I bought the game because it's pretty much the only english translation of Japanese/Chinese majong I've seen (specifically on Steam), and I'm not disappointed. The anime girls are mere window dressing...I would have bought this with or without any additional content. To put it simply; don't buy this if you're looking for porn, but do buy this if you're looking for a real Japanese/Chinese majong experience and already know how to play.

Pros:
- The only riichi (Japanese) mahjong game available on Steam localized into English
- There are different characters, and each CPU comes with a set playstyle. Also, different voices!

Neutral Remarks:
- Only those who already know at least the basic rules of Japanese mahjong can play this game, yet it still translates some of the terms these players should be familiar with into English which IMO puts me off. ALTHOUGH the translations of the winning configurations (yaku) are welcome.
Examples:

  • Call → Riichi
  • Pung → Pon
  • Chow → Chi
  • Win (appears if you draw the tile) → Agari/Tsumo
  • Also the names for Mangan, Haneman, etc.

    Cons:
    - No multiplayer! ← EMPHASIS ON THIS!
    - The interface itself is clunky and not smooth as compared to other games.
    - It's missing a lot of features already present in other games (albeit those games are in Japanese):
  • Showing what tiles you're going to win with
  • [*]Identifying if a person's tiles are discarded right after draw (tsumogiri)

Essentially, the game is single player mahjong on a PC platform. I don't know about you, but for me playing against CPUs gets considerable boring over time. If you want to practice playing, I guess you could buy this game, but in terms of features, it is a bit pricey (considering there are free web versions of this).

All in all, this feels like an old Japanese mahjong game that has just been ported to Steam. It's lacking features for its price.

If you're a veteran: just stick with web clients like Tenhou.
If you're trying to get into this game: I would also recommend the above as you'll probably improve more playing elsewhere.

Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle is nothing else than a simple japanese version of the Mahjong game.....with anime girls.

For all of you who stayed to read a more "complex" review of this game...well...as complex as you can get about a game of mahjong anyways, here is what you will get.

First of all, the whole mahjong game it self works deceantly, which is good because other than that, there is nothing much really.

The whole anime side of the game, is like a nice sticker on something plain, so you can try and make it look unique. The girls talk in japanese but they all have 3 or 2 lines total, which gets pretty repetitive and the fact that some of the girls sound pretty annoying too, doesnt help either. The music doesn't really fit the whole game either. Thankfully you can mute every sound or the two individually in the options menu if you want to.

Other "minor" problem with the game is that the translation is pretty bad....yeah...never would have thought that I'm ever going to mention translation issues in a mahjong game...but on the upside, it can make you chuckle for the first time you read it.

Since there is no multiplayer in the game (Which is a real shame) the only thing you can do is to unluck all the different characters in the game, which is just like unlocking different AI behaviours.

One last thing I want to mention is that there is no tutorial in the game. So if you are new to mahjong, this isnt where you wanna start getting in to it, or download a manual from the internet before you hop in to the game.

Overall, the game lacks originality. The girls it self are nothing more than different AI's with different behaviours. It would have been cool if all the girls would have different special moves like I dont know, switching tiles, super mega lucky draws etc. but no unfortunatelly all you have is a basic mahjong game with anime stickers on it.

As for do I recommend it or not, well.....it deppends on why do you want to buy it. If you want a solid mahjong game with some basic anime skin on it, than yes. This game is good to sit down for an hour and play a few rounds than get back to your life. For people who would want something unique, I would say try and look for one online.

updated : game got patched pretty quickly and is playable now, the game is still pretty costy for what it offers, but if you were just curious about this mahjong game and don't know enough other people to play it, it does the trick. Now I just need to figure out how to create a winning hand.

I wish it was a bit more poker night like, while simple in premise, offers so much more enjoyment.

Well can't really write a review besides the fact that the interface itself isn't very user friendly, there is currently a bug for some people (like me ) that causes the cam to zoom in to close to the board, so all you get to see is some squares. I'll update this review if this gets patched, but untill then I really wouldn't recommend it, unless you feel lucky.

    Con:

    - Not beginners friendly.
    - Not intermediates friendly.

    Either pro or con:
    - For a game that features "pretty girls," there is a surprising lack of substance.

My unbiased opnion: This is not worth money.

    My biased opinion: It's horrible.

The girls say 2 and a half words then they're about to win and when they win.

As someone who likes anime girls and mahjong:

If you like games with anime girls, this is not for you.
If you like Mahjong, you're better off playing any other game. Even just a web-browser mahjong game.

The UI, the translation and the voice acting all reek of cheap and lazy.

tl;dr: Don't pay for it. Looks worse than a flash game from 1998.

This game is about 95% japanese mahjong and 5% busty anime babes. This game is good if you already know how to play japanese mahjong and understand the rules and hands. If you don't know how to play and you are buying the game for the girls, you will be disappointed. I was not disappointed though! I enjoy playing japanese mahjong, so playing against cute girls and hearing cute girl voices only enhances it. Now I just really want to win more so I can unlock more girls.
It's a little buggy and the translation is a little silly but nothing that really stops me from playing the game. I agree it would be a lot better if we could do multiplayer!!

First of all, the game gives an error when starting the game, but it continues to run. If I go into the options menu however, I get a DirectX error, and it crashes the game completely. It's still fully playable though, I just can't see what options there are.

It's four player mahjong, and moves at a satisfyingly fast pace. I say this because a lot of four player mahjong video games are excrutiatingly slow.

The default setting in this game is for four rounds (east only), rather than the eight (east and south) or sixteen (east, south, west, north) variants you usually get in these games, so games fly by really quickly.

The sound effects are great, and to summarise, the actual mahjong gameplay part is fun!

    ---

Unfortunately... there's not much else to say about the game other than things that can be perceived as downsides.

    - When you lose, it dumps you back to the title menu.

    - When you WIN, it dumps you back to the title menu.

    - There's no kind of 'reward art' that tends to be common in these kinds of games.

    - There's no character dialogue or in-between-game scenes, just different voices during the mahjong gameplay.

    - Characters unlock on an achievement basis, ie. 'Win 100 games!' or 'Win 5 games as this character!' This isn't bad in itself, but when it's the only thing in the game to work towards (getting different voice samples and a character icon), it's not too motivating.

    - It's single player only, but honestly, that's usually the norm for these kinds of anime-themed mahjong games... except all the other single player mahjong games usually have a storyline, dialogue, reward art, endings, occasionally heart meters, and so on. This game has none of those.

In short, it's great for a ten minute burst of polished fast-paced mahjong gameplay, but don't expect anything more than that. There's no goal to aim for other than unlocking all the characters, and those characters are nothing more than a single picture when choosing them on the character select screen, and then you never see them again.

Purely because it's the only way to play mahjong in English on Steam, and the gameplay part is solid, I'm clicking 'Recommended' for this! But if you are able to play Japanese console games, there are hundreds of better titles out there in this genre.
