A great concept with certain fun for the word game wilful, though naturally quite repetitive.
Words for Evil is stylish, fun, and never gets old. I highly recommend it!
In WORDS OF EVIL, the aim is to lead a party of up to 3 adventurers through various lands while defeating deadly creatures, finding treasure, and avoiding traps. Unlike most standard RPG games, however, here the arena is not a sprawling dungeon but a grid of 35 squares each representing a random letter of the alphabet!
After selecting an initial party, the characters go on a "run" across the landscape where random encounters could lead to shrines for statistic improvement, treasure chests, vicious traps, equipment shops to buy new items, or monsters. These events are randomised so no two journeys will ever be the same!
Meeting a monster invokes a battle to the death. Here the letter grid will appear. Enemies are "hit" by creating words from selected letter tiles with those adjacent to it - including diagonally - and the longer the word then the more damage that will be inflicted to the enemy health bar. Monsters hit back at certain periods, gradually reducing health from our characters, with stronger foes attacking much more frequently. Once words are created the tiles disappear and new ones take their place, ensuring there are always 35 letters in play.
When an enemy is killed we receive gold and experience, then immediately travel onwards to the next encounter. Gold may be spent at any of the shops we find along the way while experience allows us to level up our characters once enough is gained.
Sometimes we encounter traps and here we are presented with an anagram of several letter tiles in which to create a single word. Successfully using every letter shall disarm the trap but smaller words will result in health damage to our characters. Likewise, chests have a couple of tile rows and by combining the letters in sequence to spell a word will open it and distribute a reward. Both the trap and chest challenges are timed.
Each character has 3 battle abilities which are unlocked by questing. These are Basic, Strong and Ultra, and come into play depending on how many tiles are used to form words. Ultra attacks obviously do massive amounts of damage to a monster while the others do considerably less. Various tiles are colour coded for additional bonuses, too.
If a character is defeated in battle they are given a "last chance" of survival with a challenge by solving a 7 letter anagram. Doing so returns them to the fight with full health. Completing smaller words may increase half their health, but tiny words usually result in the character being killed, although the enemy will suffer a little damage as well. Fortunately fallen heroes are available for the next "run" with all their skills and experience level still intact. Therefore some grind is inevitable to produce veteran adventurers who will be able to take on the strongest creatures in the game.
We are able to unlock 19 heroes, from sword masters and archers to the likes of snowmen and even Santa Claus! There are 84 different monsters to face throughout 7 lands of increasing difficulty. No matter which land we choose or monster we fight, though, each "run" follows the same basic formula.
I quite enjoy WORDS OF EVIL as it offers a new approach to the standard RPG genre. It obviously helps if we like word games, too! There are sadly no Achievements but a total of 6 Trading Cards to collect.
A slight downside is that there is no full screen mode available and thus the game is played within a window, ensuring the graphics are quite small (but still functionable) and this does not distract too much from the overall game. Indeed, it can be both fast and exciting within its own limited framework structure.
Anybody wanting something a little different should certainly give it a try!
Words for Evil is like if Scrabble and a fantasy RPG had a baby, and that baby drank way too much coffee. It mostly does what it promises, and the graphics are nice enough to make you think you’re playing a retro classic… until you remember you're just trying to spell “cat” under pressure.
The RPG elements? Well, let’s just say they’re as minimal as my gym attendance. You’ll find yourself battling enemies and leveling up, but don’t expect an epic quest or a deep narrative—it's more like a wordy scavenger hunt gone rogue.
The gameplay is very repetitive, but if you fall into the game loop, be prepared to lose hours of your life that no one is giving you back.
At some point, I just decided to throw in the towel and return to games with actual stories—like, you know, anything with a plot.
In the end, the pixel art is delightful, but it’s not enough to save the day. So if you’re ready for a wordy adventure that might just turn your brain into scrambled eggs, dive in. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Fantastic, bringing balance to the Force. God of Word + Words for Evil + Nephilimism.
This game is easy and chill to play, but also cute. Def enjoying it
WHY ISNT THERE A FULL SCREEN MODE..... ITS SO SMALL
The game is more challenging than it looks. It is a tiny game with a big heart. Some people complain that it launches in a tiny window. There is a way to adjust that. When you give your character a potion, click on potion, but then cancel. It then shows you options to make the screen wider. It still isn't full screen, but I don't know that the point of this game is to show you anything but the letters and the pixel monsters. I am a word person, and I learned words here that I had never read before (and I read a LOT). I appreciate the education it gives me, plus it's fast. There is no mercy for you if you don't think fast. I've gotten a lot of entertainment out of a game that is less than five dollars. You don't feel compelled to build a world, or to keep coming back, but I will, precisely because it's a fun little game to do in between other tasks or while waiting on friends.
While quite simple in concept, it's all done really well for what it's trying to be. Really like the pixel art and variety in levels you get. I haven't gone through the entire thing yet, but I have enjoyed the parts I tried.
Only got some small gripes: Like there isn't anything between "zen" or "pro" in terms of difficulty, so you either get smashed into the ground or can't lose, which is a bit silly. Also please audio balance your game it's way too loud with the hitting sounds.
Only reason I probably wont play more is that I just find it really stressful, even in zen mode... I just forget all the words and can't english properly.
It is quite nice to learn new words, especially for people like me where english is not their first language.
As a guy who loves lexicography (the study of dictionaries) this game was exactly what I wanted. It spits out obscure words I will never use ever in my daily life, not even in scrabble, as they are not in the collins or merriam-webster dictionaries. If you want to play a fun rpg game, this is not it. This is a masochistic crossword puzzle. Whenever people say there is no word for the day after tomorrow, and make fun of defenestration for being present in the language, I am quick to make them regret their poor existence by explaining a. overmorrow exists, and so does ereyesterday, the day before yesterday; and b. defenestration describes historically significant events occurring 199 years apart in the Prague castle. Defenestration isn't even exclusive to the english language at all. Three plurals of octopus exist, the latinized octopi, most commonly taught, the obscure but appropriately greek octopodes, but despite these, the most commonly used word is octopuses. Isn't that neat? Why are you still reading this?
What a lie.
-there's no RPG at all, zero dialog, zero decisions, zero progression
-There are characters that are themed like fantasy tropes
-The "combat" is just the game, find words before the enemy kills you over-time
-hero progression, there are 3 skills, with 3 tiers each, you get to apply a point per level, up to max level 9
-there is "loot" but there's no UI to see what it does or choose between items, as far as I can tell it just gives a bonus to your attack/armor/whatever, and some have special effects, but there's no way to view it. I must have had about 25 physical shields equipped on one of my chars.
I only ever did 1 playthrough because the game couldn't outsmart me and I just wasn't dying, and it goes on FOREVER, there is apparently no end. I eventually just quit. I had hundreds of thousands of gold, way more than you could ever spend, and upgrades stacked, but again, nothing I could reference...
I don't know if you get to choose your class on a new game, but I just had to find guys in the wild, it's pseudo-random encounters and you can find:
-Monsters (the most common thing, and apparently it just shows you the same ones over & over & over rather than seeing the full variety.
-Healer, pay for HP
-Potion Shop: has 1 healing potion, and a few more with other effects, some last up to 4 battles.
-Fountain: Fully heals you, and it's the only place you can level up your chars
-Blacksmith: sells 3 items. Some are just like +damage or +armor, and some have cool sounding effects, but you will never see it assuming you're actually trying to play the game and find words
-Treasure Chest (often only has coins, sometimes other bonuses)
-Trap
-a hero, you can have 3 in your party and randomly encountering them is very rare. The UI to compare them is nonexistent, so just fuckin take a guess, I guess!
I could go on but it's an unpolished piece of crap. Go play Bookworm if you want something like this.
Edit: FFS this SAME COMPANY has Letter Quest which is a zillion times better, this should be taken off steam.
