I'm glad I'm able to relive the magic I felt when I first played Grandia II on the PC more than 20 years ago.
While this game crashed once after I won a boss battle, I overall had a good time with this at-least decent port.
My controller worked well, there were no glitches that stuck out like a sore thumb, and the game-play is buttery-smooth.
It's great that I get to see once again Ryudo's sarcastic mouth, the contrast between Elena and Millenia, the competent English voice acting, and the adventure these three and more experienced.
's good.
One of my favourite JRPGs.
unplayable keyboard controls tbh, thank god for steam input
i really just have love for this childhood memory of mine, but the games crashes sometimes. for me it happened after bossfight valmars tounge and also valmars body, so i had to do them twice, hopefully it dont crashes again before the next savepoint.
This is an old good game, probably one of the best on Dreamcast

my man all you need to do is set the proton to 5.13-06 like you said. worked for me after that, so thanks!
Great game even by todays standard but fuck this port. Theres no Auto Save but the game crashes a lot. I lost hours due to this, crashed more than three times in a 2 hour in game interval. It's supposed to clear in 1 hour and a half, now I need to redo them making it 4 hours. The sound balance is horrible too, footsteps is louder than music, music doesn't loop etc. Great game but i genuinely can't recommend. Use emulator better, there's save state also
I played this game as a kid, so for me -- this is some nostalgia. However, I still love the characters, interesting story, and novel gameplay. Give it a whirl - it's pretty fun!
At a Glance
Its a fun classic game. The battle system is a pretty unique take on the active turn based combat formula. There is a surprising amount of strategy and split second decision making you have to make in combat. The story is your typical JRPG tropes.
An Early 2000s Voiced Game
The Voice acting is what you'd expect from a game in the early 2000s. But hey the voice of Liquid Snake is the main character and it also has Jennifer Hale as one of the party members. Surprisingly a lot of good VA talent here, just the early days of VA in games so don't expect it to be Final Fantasy VII: Remake/Rebirth levels of performance.
The Remaster
I played this game as a teenager looking for other RPGs to play and I wasn't disappointed. The HD remaster has minor upgrades; upscaled textures, 16:9 screen support, 60 fps, 4k resolution, but that's really it. Don't expect new models, changed mechanics or any cut content. Glad that on steam you can buy this version separate from Grandia 1 though.
It has crashed on me once after a battle so make sure you save when ever you get the chance. But it has only been once, since then, no issues at all.
In Conclusion
All in all I think ti's a good game. $20 a bit steep for a ps2 remaster, but it's not egregious, $40 for both is not worth it though. If the bundle was $20 MAYBE $30 I think it would be a good deal. But if you want to play Grandia 1, just play it on PS+ included in your sub and buy Grandia 2 here on steam.
Great music!
This game is up there with FFVI and VII for my favorite JRPGs of all time. This game is awesome!
As always though, I don't know how this port compares to other versions of the game. Probably worse off, if I had to guess.
FUN TO PLAY. STYLISH.
want to play an JRPG filled with sega dreamcast quality body horror? well look no further! nothing says "worth 35~ hours of your life" than low poly action!
Game is good just like i remembered it back when i played it as a preteen i believe it was my first rpg game. As far as my experience playing the game i did run into the game crashing after a boss battle but what fixed that was a mod called vitality march, at least for me. (i do recommend this game)
This game is an amazing rpg. However, this pc version is really bad and needs to be fixed by the developers. The grandia 2 hd version randomly crashes constantly. You are forced to use the anniversary editon which drops the aspect ratio and image quality. My biggest issue is that i paid for an hd remaster and am playing an old pc version through the beta options to actually get to play the game. The hd version is extremely choppy as well while on the overworld
I love it, the best story telling game.. you get so invested in the characters =) And the combat is pretty cool too! Just a little old graphics, not for everyone I guess
I wanted to like this, but could not get into it
Game keeps crashing after over 40 hours of gameplay on both my pc and handheld device. Refund refused! Don't waste your money!
Best lovestory in a RPG ever.
This is badski , despite of the legendary name and the remaining legacy. The Devs are something , because you should teach to how port games into PC platfrom. It's crashing too much and I annoy because of it.
The plot is uncommon tho and that's good. I like it. The graphics , speaking of textures, yep, it's better,
besides, as you know , except of it you always have the crashes.
5.5/10 the high one , yes it's high for this game. I like plot, characters , dialogues.
All-time classic
I have been obsessed with this since I was a wee one and this remaster is perfect, I have never had any issues!
5 hours in and the game kept closing after battles. tried everything mentioned online and nothing worked and no refund :(
Great JRPG from the old days. I enjoy the battle system, because it is turn based in the best way, where the battle takes place in real time but is paused for you to make decisions for each characters turn.
Also great soundtrack and neat retro manga aesthetics.
Heck yes!
This was one of my very first console RPGs, and as such, I had fond memories of it. The last time I played Grandia II, you could still buy a Dreamcast in department stores.
So, has it held up? For the most part, yes. The voice acting is often stilted and wooden, the FMVs blurry, and the spell animations too long, but in those ways, Grandia II is very much a product of its time. The battle system still kicks butt after all these years, with its emphasis on good timing, and the dungeon design remains great to this day. I played the whole thing on normal difficulty, and while the regular battles are on the easier side, the boss fights make up for it. The story is your typical circa-2000 era JRPG tale of melodrama and cheese love and friendship and saving the world. It's fairly linear and light on side stuff compared to others from back then, but that's not a bad thing at all.
FMVs aside, the HD visuals look very nice, though there are two notable issues: the small character portraits during battle have been smoothed out so much that they look blobby, and the change in aspect ratio means that some things that were originally offscreen, such as NPCs popping on during some cutscenes, become visible. Audio-wise, some sound effects are a bit too loud, so you'll want to tweak those settings until they're manageable. On the flipside, Noriyuki Iwadare's soundtrack is as good as I'd remembered. There are a few bugs here and there, but I didn't run into anything truly game-breaking.
If you're nostalgic for running around a colorful fantasy world with Skye and Millennia and the others, definitely pick this up. If you're curious about what JRPGs were like during the Dreamcast era, definitely pick this up. If you want an enjoyable, and not too long, retro JRPG, yep... you may want to pick this up.
Amazing game and has bought back many memories x
The environment has interactable points while exploring, the leveling system is different and ahead of its time.
The story is very interesting and the characters fleshed out beautifully.
nope
My childhood N°1 video game of all time. I really wish they would give the IP another chance.
For Steam Deck Users:
If you want to play on Steam Deck, I recommend playing the Anniversary Version instead of the HD Remaster, because people report the HD Remaster to have brought in a whole bunch of issues.
In your Steam Library you just need to:
- Rightclick the game -> Properties -> Betas -> Anniversary Edition
- Uncheck the 60 FPS Setting in the Grandia 2 Settings Launcher.
Game is as i remember it when i played it a long time ago. The only thing I wish they added was a Fast-Forward function which really helps with grinding. 9/10 (without FF) 10/10 (If it had FF)
Grandia fans deserve better. I wanted to like this game but ended up playing a product of its time that'll never get a sequel. If either this game or the original is charming to you, get one on sale and spend a weekend with it.
This is a dime-a-dozen kind of RPG. Art style's a downgrade from the original, but the battle mechanics are improved, especially magic and basic combat encounters. Great music, fantastic world-building, but most of the plot (or at least its conveyance) must have gotten lost in translation. I think I would never have beaten this without the compass. I did enjoy the story, though; Mareg's character in particular is a standout to me. Kinda wish the shoehorned romance subplot got cut, though, and dialogue can be a bit stilted at times.
This game at its core really likes eating your time. If you're not in a charming or dramatic cutscene or changing your equipment for the 15th today, you're watching unskippable magic animations in a random encounter that ends in two turns or a boss fight that is guaranteed to last 10 or more minutes. That makes sense for the "cinematic RPG" that it strives to be. What really got to me was random crashes after boss fights, especially some of the longer ones. This happened 3 out of 10 times in the second half of the story. Kind of a sour note to end on.
It is Very Good Game but It is extremely unfortunate that when your in dungeons the game will completely shut off. And You will have to do the whole dungeon again cause of it being a older game it doesn't have auto-save
Very fun blast to the past!
Pretty good.
the game crashes all the time
IT WONT HAPPEN DIFFERENTLY TO YOU, DO NOT BUY
also the difficulty adjustment is ALL over the place, its way way too easy
Just love the game, played 6 or 7 times
Its a shame the dreamcast original is still the definitive version due to all the bugs in the port, but this is one of the few "great" dreamcast games out there that still holds up.
Ubuntu heads need to install the beta. Problem solved. Don't even need to muck with protontools
This is my favourite JRPG. I highly recommend this game.
Captivating story.
Lovable characters.
The game's combat mechanics are nice and simple. The combat system is simple too.
The graphics are superb. Especially the power moves you initiate. You never tire of seeing them.
The soundtrack is very good. Some are catchy while others soothe you.
What's really good about this game is that there is a compass that tells you where to go and and how far your objective is.
There are save locations where you can fully recover your team's health and magic points.
What I really like is that you can choose to have Japanese voice actors which sounds authentic.
Of all the Japanese RPGs I have played, this is my favourite. Best of the best.
I would put yes, but since the game no matter what settings you have keep shutting down after certain bosses.. Though it worked for me the second time I tried on 2 different bosses it keeps happening on every boss since it first happend.. And since I'm playing on hard it takes a while to kill them, very frustrating.. Would expect it would be fixed by now but yeah here we are..
its grandia
