Players are faced with tough economic and military decisions as they earn Victory Points and attempt to outbid opponents at the auction and get their hands on Leonardo Da Vinci’s most powerful war machines. Every Victory Point has to be earned by careful placement of your troops, construction of fortifications, and invasion of bordering regions. Each new turn brings a chance to acquire Da Vinci’s precious projects and get the upper hand over your opponents.

Bid at the auction for Da Vinci’s inventions. Upgrade your infantry, tanks and aircraft with new technologies to increase reliability and combat power. Earn Victory points for most castles, territories, technologies, being Magnifico and other special actions. Fight battles with wondrous technologies but be careful as tanks can explode!
Cannons, flying machines, bombards, tanks and many more inventions will be available as options at the auction table, but only with a perfect balance of risk and caution will players make the most of them.

Magnifico is an unusual turn based strategy game with an equally unusual premise. Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions have been built, and you must use them to conquer Renaissance Europe... or actually any other number of maps. It's just a game of territories and players, all set up exactly the same.
And that's where we can start to see the problems here. There's no a lot of soul in this game once you get past the "Oh, Leonardo invented tanks and flying machines" novelty. There's also not a lot of depth... this plays more like Risk meets Defender of the Crown (remember that from the Commodore 64?), maybe a little more depth, but not much.
Thing is, I know fans of turn based strategy games, because I am one. We don't play these games looking for a casual, almost mobile game level of depth, we're looking for games like Hearts of Iron or Crusader Kings. The empire management here is simplistic, there's only a couple of unit types (thanks Leonardo, you should have been more inventive, now look at the result). There's no real factions, everything is samey... it's just a really milquetoast strategy game, I can't see it really appealing to anyone when you take into account the competition. I don't mean to have a dig, but we all know Slitherine is just Paradox, but from Wish. You know I'm right.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The game features mostly static, barely animated 2D images, the kind of thing you expect to see in browser/flash games. While the artwork itself, while mediocre, might be considered passable, the visual presentation here is negligible, it might as well be a slideshow or a Youtube video. Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Asteroids had more advanced animation and visuals going on than this game does.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Magnifico has the surprising price of around $5 USD (usually Slitherine bloats their prices like crazy), but it's still not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Just play Crusader Kings 4, you'll be happier.
Seems like an interesting take on Risk, with a bit more complication and a victory point system to keep games from dragging on too long.
Unfortunately, there is no multiplayer and the AI seems completely passive. It did not attack me even once. I deliberately left a city virtually undefended next to a large stack of enemy troops, and even that bait wasn't enough to get it to act.
Interesting idea that led to a decent strategy game, but too complicated for my taste, so I can't recommend it.
Beautiful, interesting and quirky game. Worth the money paid! Though, it seems to have a bug where +2 VP Magnifico is NOT credited after the auction in the 3 player game.
Good game for the price. Kinda like Risk but not totally . Anyway . Found no bugs and game never crashed and it was fun. I just wish you could multiplayer this game but its only single player .

Fun board game with a cool theme, too bad no multiplayer, but for 49 cents i'd say it's worth it.
Like the game quite a bit. It's not very complex and there's little "action" but the game is graspable and interesting for casual weekend fun. I like how there are different maps from which to choose and how you can improve your armies or tanks or air units. You also can win by different strategies.
I recommend the game for the casual gamer who wants to have this in their library to balance out all the FPS and other titles they may have. Now off to play again, this time with a different map?
This is an adaptation of a board game. In this game you play as one of a number of claimants to woo Da Vinci to your side and build his inventions. There is a victory point system that determines the winner when someone reaches that point total.
Decent game.
Found this game oddly enough after starting to watch DaVinci's Demons. I like it so far, but have yet to see an endgame. A big fan of DaVinci's inventions and art and the game showcases it nicely as cards for auction within the game that have special abilities during your military campaign.
"Magnifico" thats a great way to describe this game. Really fun "risk" game with good mechanichs that makes it way better than "risk". What is missing in this game? Multiplayer!!!!
After winning against the AI, all is missing is to humiliate my friends at this fun game, unfortunately that is not happening :(
Even so, totally recommend and it's very cheap.
The game is good enough for playing when you don't want to spend hours at the keyboard.
Tutorial is good. Galileo theme is cute.
Multiplayer/hotseat/Last man standing modes would be a BIG plus.

Taking territory with troop bonuses every turn seems like the best strategy against AI. 3 moves or actions per turn, but unlimited troop movement. Fairly easy, so that the challenge is in seeing how quickly you can win. Winning determined by VP that awarded every turn.
It takes 15-20 minutes to finish a game. I played a few times and then just couldn't any more - just got bored with it.
It seems unfinished... but I won - yay me!

Fully worth the two bucks I've paid for it. It's the electronic version of the same boardgame (think of Risk, with simplified rules and bidding on Da Vinci's inventions gives you an edge).
PROS
+ Good tutorial, you are up and running in 5 minutes.
+ Some mild strategic thinking is required here and there.
+ Solid replayability (different maps, multiplayer).
+ A game can take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes.
CONS
- The AI is meh.
- Lacks any sort of depth.
This game is great. It is well worth the price.
Magnifico is a fun board game based PC game. Would love to see Multi-Player.
Only played a single game and enjoyed it - to a point.
It is very risk like in places - but the army building is different.
The card auctions are strange and you have to decide how much to gamble. If you win the auction, you will get to choose on of the cards. But, the twist is, bid too much and the 2nd person gets their choice for a fraction of the cost - or drops out completely.
The AI seems to focus on defence - which is ok - but as you get closer to the victory point - doesn't try to use the poweful stacks it has built.
Would be good with a multi-playerr or hot-seat option.
Price is excellent - but this could be a try before you buy and an occasional game.
Overall - i like it and when i get 4 hrs clocked - will feel i've got value for money
Update : The AI level is controlled by picking different characters to play against. There is a list, and it shows 3\4 by default who seem to be unrated. Scrolling down shows the higher rated characters. Only realised this on second game.
At $5, this is a steal, and one the company website, you can get the real board game for $14.99.
Magnifico is a clever mixture of artistic and tactical warfare. It's roots are in the Axis and Allies mold, but it plays dramatically different, with the inclusion of cards that make for asymmetrical opponents of varying qualities.
It's an elegant translation of the original board game, and a worthy addition to your library. One can only hope other games, like Dust, will be made into digital format(s) as well.
