Steep learning curve, but once you get into it, it's fun.
Very very fun game. Rewards good moves, Punishes mistakes.
I've had a lot of fun playing the skirmish mode - which is well thought out and the generated maps and unit composition keeps it fresh. Works fine on the steam deck (beta software track) - took a couple minutes to start up the first time and after that I had zero issues.
The AI is honestly not bad to play against. It is more fun than the close combat games for sure
Satisfying the Strategic "Itch"...
For decades now I have been looking for a game that can and will hopefully match up with the game called "Steel Panther" that was created for Windows XP and to this day, I have been looking for the game that can hopefully and willfully match up to the game itself, I do not care for the graphics. That is something that doesn't make a good game in my opinion. I loved everything that Steel Panthers brought to the table. I believe that this game is almost hitting it on the head of the nail with what they have here. A turn based strategic game that is more or less a game of chess and mindfulness of troops and movement. This is something that will take strategic thinking and troop movement and placement. This game is really enjoyable, I know about the playtime that I have is not the most enticing. As said before I am on the lookout for a game that was released decades ago and trying to find the exact match.
In my opinion, this is a really good strategy game based in the WWII era, and do recommend this game. However due to the shelf life of this I would wait for a sale when they have one for this.
the best turn-based strategy & tactical war game i have ever played
This a great little, simple game. Can get a little addictive! But in a good way. Turn the difficulty up to get some really nail biting battles. If you're a fan of tabletop wargaming IRL, this is a great little game to pass the time between real games!
good fun
I enjoyed this pretty similarly to the original Battle Academy.
Pros
I think the basic game + mechanics are very good and there is an excellent variety of units (each with their own strengths and weaknesses), and of course each mission makes you think about how to use your troops, when to tell them to hold fire (if you are on the defensive), when and where to use resources like artillery support etc.
Think there are some minor improvements/additions in BA2 though it is still very similar overall to original BA
Cons
I thought that some of the campaigns became very difficult in terms of what you are expected to achieve with the resources you have and eventually a couple of the campaigns I gave up as I felt it was no longer fun. Which is fine - there were still a good number of campaign missions which I very much enjoyed.
Neutral
As with the original BA, there is definitely an element of luck - you have to live with the fact that (for example) you can have a shot on a tank which has a 80% chance of knocking out the tank....and you can miss...or the enemy can take out one of your tanks on a very low-% shot. But for me this actually hasn't bothered me too much as for most missions you have a decent-sized force, and the occasional bit of bad/good luck usually isn't decisive (in my view), and I just tried to enjoy playing through without tons of saves etc.
Overall
I do still enjoy this game same as BA, just a bit less convinced by some of the campaigns / missions in the Eastern Front. I thought the original BA campaigns were better balanced. But still a very good strategy game in my view.
