I just want to give this game a positive review for I think it deserves it.
I've been following Derrick The Deathfin since the Steam Greenlight days and had it sitting on my wishlist ever since. Then, some day, it was released, but had not attracted too many people, so review-wise it was unclear if the game is worth its price.
Also, through all the sales that happened the past years, the game never was on discount - until now.
And it is really worth it:
- The story is rather rudimentary, but presented humorous andy funny
- tasks are varying (in ok manner for the size of the game)
- the papercraft artwork is astounding!
- animations as well as the game itself run pretty fluid
As mentioned by others, the controls for a 2D platformer are somewhat unprecise, but you can get used to that.
Also, some tutorial or hints on what is to do (second boss, for example) would make it easier to understand how to progress.
Overall, Derrick The Deathfin is a good-looking, rather short experience, but for the current 2023 winter sale discount (not even one dollar / euro) I fully recommend checking this game out.
This game is about as silly and as beautiful and as old school as you can get, just pick it up!
Derrick the Deathfin is a very very beautiful game... kind of old school underwater platforming game, recommended for the visuals alone!
Fun little game. Lots of personality to it. You can tell the devs really had fun making it.
Downside: Controls could be better, and sometimes you're left wondering what to do.
Upside: It's quirky and fun. Most of the time you'll just be laughing.
So creative, so beautiful, so fun. Originality like this needs to be encouraged!
It's just not that fun of a game. The controls are awful and floaty and you constantly get stuck on the environment and other fish so movement kind of becomes a huge nuisance. The aesthetics are very well done though, and the different fishes and environments look really cool for a short while at least and has several small nods to classsic games on Sega consoles like Ecco the Dolphin (the controls are actually just as bad as well).
I would recommend this to maybe the younger audience to some degree. It's a deeply flawed, colorful and short little game that may appeal to kids.

Derrick the Deathfin is a great game full of fun and enjoyable moments, it might not be perfect but if you can grab it on sale then there are a lot worse ways you could spend some time. Check out the video below for my full review along with my attempts to become number 1 on the game's 4th level.
