absolute donkey cheeks, just play dow2
one of my all time favorite franchises!
this game is really cool :D
is very fun and has good mods, havent played pvp yet tho
Probably the most disappointing game. I loved the first dawn of war. Didn't really like the second but the third truly is the worst. They took all the worst things from number 2 and put them in number 3. They pretend it is a base building game but its not. Very saddening.
frightning mr.warriors spacesliens big.commication open not it war now gonna fight american sameria team to american ninja teams see capt fonda in outer space visting duran se gonna be warearth
This game is insanely fun! I'm fairly new to the IP as a player but have actually heard of it over the years. I love RTS games and this one is amazing. I have no idea why nobody plays online besides with mods. It's still worth the purchase for the campaign and skirmishes for sure! Hopefully something can be done about the absence of players online though.
Please God add more to this game!
I had to change my review to negative mostly due to bugs.
The bugs in question :
I'm having a bug where the game randomly alt tabs by itself which is beyond annoying, and it happens multiple times per session...
It also happens frequently that an enemy unit freezes in place and stops moving or being hostile unless attacked. as if it forgets it's even there...
When I launch the game I'm greeted with a reward screen that locks the game, you click okay and nothing happens, always have to alt f4 and launch it again, so you have to launch the game 2 times every time you want to play.
There are annoying bugs that directly affect mission success, some scripts need very specific and sometimes unclear prerequisites to be triggered It's obvious the game was not playtested enough. I had to redo missions that I had not failed ( on hard (-.-)) due to some script not triggering due to some unclear requirement that was not met. ( Mission 4, the guy still died even though I saved him just because Gabriel was on cooldown )

Overall this game tries to be its own thing, a moba/rts hybrid but it feels like it bites off more than it can chew. The game is micro-intensive in a good way, which makes for some funny and unpredictable moments, but it's clunky, the UI and unit control scheme should have been geared towards facilitating the micro-management as much as possible. Readability is poor, game lacks contrast, buildings look the same, squads blend together and are harder to manage than necessary. It's a shame because it could have been so great, but It's a pain to play and really buggy, by the way bugs are the main reason why I can't recommend it. I think they should just make it free-to-play and work on these issues. It has potential, being the only game of its genre that I know of. But it needs a number of serious improvements.
Force you to play different factions in story campaign mode. Gameplay is worse than DoW2. What have you all been doing?
About 100 hours on this game.
And I can firmly say that I don't understand the hate behind this game?
Sure we got people doing flips in term armor or the game being over-saturated and what not but besides that I really don't see anything else wrong with this game?
- Gameplay:
- Unlike the other two iterations of the game, this one has the biggest large-scale battles. The battles always look epic and is really the reason why I prefer this game over the 1st and 2nd, although, yes, it comes with the cost of having to wait for a while for your army to prepare.
- This game obviously requires strategic and tactical planning. You can't just run in and invade the enemy without a plan. Your obviously going to have your army decimated like that. This game heavily encourages the use of teamwork and coordination between your teammates. (Yes Multiplayer still exists in this game)
- Battles can range from taking 10 minutes, all the way to taking 2 hours or more (Yes, this almost happened). Depends who your working with and who your going against.
- Mechanics and Elites:
- For the others who are saying that elites are "overpowered units that decimate regular armies" clearly haven't played this game at all or a lot. I have found myself destroying (and getting destroyed) elites by just using a simple army. It's like I said before, you need strategic and tactical planning to counter these supposed "overpowered units". However, if those elites are used correctly, then yes, they can be a pain to deal with.
- In my opinion, this game has the least amount of mechanics (probably due to the large-scale battles) than the other two games. You can only apply 2 weapons on a tactical marine squad and apply basic upgrades to units such as increased HP and damage, with some exceptions being applying land mines to a scout marine squad, increased slowness on devastator bullets and power swords for assault marines.
- Doctrines are a key factor for your armies success, you can use multiple to benefit your whole army in general or specific doctrines for a certain play-style or unit. Doctrines (along with elites) can create various play-styles that you can use during your matches so that the gameplay doesn't get too stale.
- Factions:
- Sadly, this game only has 3 factions. The Space Marines, Orkz, and Eldar. Although, each one has a few unique features that make them differ from each other. Space Marines have their drop pods and the standard flag, orks have their resourcefulness by using scrap to buff or create more mechanized units at a cheaper cost while the eldar have their shield hp buff and they can teleport their bases/buildings anywhere across the map. Each clearly have distinct playstyles and none of them really counter one another, just depends on skill.
- Modding:
- There are some good mods that come from this game, granted, they're not really as great as Dawn of War's 1 and 2 mods. However, there are some mods like Deathwatch and Redux that heavily change the gameplay by adding more mechanics and implementing previously locked units or even new units into the game.
- There are also some great maps that come from this game. My friend Playgu is an excellent map maker that focuses on both the balancing on the map, making sure that no side gets an advantage over the other and making them pretty as well. If anyone else is interested in making their own maps, Playgu has written a guide on how to make maps using World Builder in the Dawn of War 3 Guide tab.
- Campaign:
- Going to make this quick and simple. Plot: There is a spear on a Planet called Acheron that all three factions wish to get. Throughout the campaign, you play as a different faction each level fighting the other factions. Until one level, you play as all 3, just not all at the same time. Towards the end, the spear turns out to be a trap placed by a daemon that was used to lure people in to get the spear and kill them, which awakens the daemon in which each leader of the faction has to defeat in the end. They all team up in the end and kill the daemon. It's not too complex but its not the best as well.
(After the end credits, we get a teaser of a supposed future necron faction update, although, this update never came)
- Overall:
- This game favors large scale battle and retains the strategic and tactical thinking from the previous two games. If done right, this game can be fun to play, especially with other online people.
(Also remember to join the official dawn of war 3 discord server if you wish to play with other people online, https://discord.gg/z9QZturP4b )
Campaign is so boring. Like what were they doing for all those years? The DoW 2 campaign had so much more to do even.
Overall 6/10
Not a bad game but it also falls short of being great, landing somewhere in the middle.
The final campaign level is particularly disappointing. It consists of repetitive boss fights where you must wait for the boss to heal before engaging again, all while dealing with waves of minions. This design feels tedious and time-consuming, which detracts from the overall experience. Because of this, I would deduct a point from my rating; otherwise, it could have been a 7/10.
i love dow3 best game in the trilogy
Good game to lose some time and just immerse yourself in some fantasy
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is better in every way except graphics. If you are looking for content and lore play the previous game edition instead.
A crime this is associated with warhammer or dawn of war at all, let alone dressed up as the third instalment of the DoW series.
Don't buy it.
Great game, some tweaks here and there I'd suggest but overall pleased
It's really bad. I didn't believe the reviews but I wish I'd listened. I regret the purchase.
i should have listened to the other people telling me the game was bad... it's worst that that ... I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT... stay away from this hot mess...
A lot of negative reviews are coming from people who wanted a totally different Dawn of War 3. This Dawn of War 3 is fun and exists and theirs is perfect and imaginary- your pick
Actually completed and enjoyed it. A different vibe and much faster pace than the previous two games. Overall I felt they did a great job. Ideally would love more factions and content, but oh well. Recommended!
They figured out the mix of WC3 and DOWSS too late, and now this gorgeous game is racked with cobwebs. Its far better than most of the pea brained "its not DOWSS" reviewers would lead you to believe.
It is a great game but seems to not have the support from developers or fans as they seek the original games (Dark Crusade etc) (as do I)... Graphics are great and is a step closer to the original games. The story throughout the games have been excellent and really hope the games do not get fully abandoned and the developers keep going as with each iteration of DOW it gets more perfected... Mod support would be great as well with the success of some of the Soul Storm mods. The developers should be proud of the game they have created!
If you decide you want to try the game (whether you have played any of the previous installments) it is certainly worth the money, follow the story and give it a chance, the game is great!
Honestly, if you bought it during the 80% off sale it's worth the price, but honestly Soulstorm feels much more like a standard RTS game, where this feels more like a third person hero shooter with base building and army building mechanics soft baked in.
Do yourself a favor, go buy Dawn of War: Soulstorm or Dark Crusade, you'll have a better time.
>boot up the game
>army painter
>no guard
>no chaos
>no sisters of battle
>no necrons
>no tau
>alt+f4
>refund
after a rocky start this could have been the best warhammer game we have ever had, but sadly the eliteists, gatekeepers and naysayers scared the devs away from fixing and improving what would have been simple fixes.
The fans ruined this game.
So. Let me preface this by saying I am giving this a positive review because of the fact I got this game on sale for $7.99. At full price, even now, I wouldn't of purchased this game otherwise. If you have an interest in this game, buy it ON SALE, a good one, or one that you feel is a respectable ask.
As it stands, absolutely understand why this game has mixed reviews for what it is. I own most of the Dawn of War 1 games from back when you still had to buy the disc prior to winding up with them on Steam. I also own all of the DoW2 games.
DoW3 is NOT your typical RTS. If you're looking for base building, it's there, but it's very minimal. The problem I have with this one is it took what made DoW2 fun - the TACTICAL side of it - and well, basically removed it damn near entirely. There's no more putting your troops in cover (there is a mutant form of cover in the game but it's really, really lame) and telling them where to aim to prepare a little ambush. You don't control the gear of your elites, you don't select their armor or their weapons or anything like you did in DoW2, which is a crying shame. You still capture requisition and power control points like Company of Heroes to build your economy, even though I've found it gets weirdly slow going to build your resources which can make even the campaign missions kind of drag on for longer than they need to. The specialty melee kills you used to see from your troops in DoW1 and 2 seem to be much sloppier and don't look like they connect properly. Like, I don't ever see my big mech ork pick an enemy up and crush him in their claw. I see the motion of it, but not the connection, aside from watching that troop die. All in all it's like they stripped and dumbed down what made DoW1 and 2 great.
That said, it's still 40k. The story for the campaign is solid. The voice acting for the characters and armies is superb. The armies and elites are still awesome looking. The game is visually beautiful for an RTS game, but in the realm of a traditional RTS experience, it's very light, very bare bones. It feels like most of the time and talent for the game went into making it look and sound amazing, and telling an enjoyable story. The gimmick of the war doctrines - buffs that you unlock and then apply to your game play that effect individual units and some base stuff, or your big buff powers - doesn't make enough of an impact at all to, honestly, make them worth a damn. The changes are small and not entirely noticeable, but some do make a nice difference, but that's why it feels more like a gimmick than anything.
For the price I spent, I am enjoying the game play, I have had no technical issues with the game like crashes or hiccups of any kind so far. I definitely wish there had been more to this game than what there is, but for 8 bucks? This wasn't a bad deal and I'm enjoying taking my time through the story until I'm done with the game.
If you can get this on a great sale like this one, it'll take up a few hours of your time, and so long as you know what it is you're getting prior to the purchase, I think you'll enjoy it for what it is, even if it was a far lighter game than it should be for being the third part of a long series up to this point. It's a absolute disappointment for being stripped down like it is, like a stranger reversal of all the work that went into DoW1 and 2.
Still. It's been fun to play, it looks and sound great, the story is likeable, the units and elites are all pretty cool, because hey? It's Warhammer 40k! Give it a shot, but know what you're getting before you spend the money.
gameplay wise I think it's overhated but it IS quite buggy. Multiple times a menu pops up on booting that says I acquired something and I can't make it go away. Another time I was supposed to rescue a guy and he just wasn't getting rescued even though everything was dead, he was gradually losing health so that means him taking damage is scripted and not real.
For linux player, the game have been tested Ubuntu 16, but you will need proton 8.0-5 to launch the game for recent Linux version. You may play in single playe mode but unfortunatly,, you will face issue of desync in multiplayer.
The reviews are bullshit, its a good game its just now DoW II or I. Those games were amazing and this is not amazing, its not the DoW 3 we deserve but it IS in fact a good video game.
Purchased for $11.99, Refunded a day later, This game is a ridiculously large leap backwards for the game in general, Voice acting is just utter garbage, Orks don't even sound orky anymore, Game play was mediocre and it plays like a version specifically dumbed down for kids... Such a shame that a third installment does everything worse than the two that came before...
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III is an ambitious attempt to blend the strategic depth of classic real-time strategy games with the intensity of large-scale battles set in the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40K. The game offers three distinct factions—Space Marines, Orks, and Eldar—each with unique playstyles, units, and special abilities that encourage varied approaches to combat. Its campaign provides a well-paced introduction to each faction, weaving a narrative of alliances and betrayals that captures the tone of the Warhammer universe.
The visuals are stunning, with highly detailed units, spectacular special effects, and battlefield environments that bring the dark and chaotic world of Warhammer 40K to life. The large-scale battles feel appropriately epic, with massive units like Imperial Knights and Wraithknights adding a sense of grandeur to combat. Meanwhile, the voice acting and sound design further enhance the immersive experience, from the booming battle cries of Orks to the solemn chants of Space Marines.
However, Dawn of War III takes risks that may divide fans. Its gameplay leans heavily on MOBA-inspired mechanics, such as the focus on hero units and a heavy reliance on abilities, which may not appeal to players seeking the tactical depth of its predecessors. Base-building, while present, is simplified compared to earlier entries, and the multiplayer mode, while engaging, lacks some of the refinement found in other RTS games.
Despite these divisive elements, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III shines in its presentation and ability to deliver cinematic, large-scale battles. While it may not fully satisfy the expectations of every fan of the franchise, it remains a bold and visually impressive entry in the series that offers plenty of action and spectacle for those willing to embrace its unique gameplay direction.
campaign is quite fun actually. its not the most brilliant rts ever, it doesnt have the best graphics or whatever but its dawn of war. its not unlike the first one in my estimation. before this, i played timberborn which is an unfinished game with no goals so nothing to do for the player yet every reviewer out there says it is the best thing since sliced bread. which goes to show, reviewers are a bit silly, everything is super political. this is way better than timberborn. its just not an improvement over previous dawn of war games.
Viel hate drüber gehört aber echt ein gutes game. Denke das die Community ein upgrade zu DoW 2 wollte. Es ist halt anders aber trotzdem sehr gut.
A pure shitshow of "Oh I'll play as the space marines" just to get your shit kicked in, then you play as the Eldar just to get your shit kicked in. This is just on normal difficulty which is fucking stupid. I don't know what the actual fuck the devs were thinking but the difficulty is insane and when you finally do get an elite unit, it feels just as squishy in your hands as regular infantry but if the enemy has one, that bitch is tankier than fucking literal titans.
Fuck this bullshit, I'm going back to DoW2.
what dumb game developer decided not to be able to rotate the camera? has he even played the first 2 dawn of war games? its different ill give it that but dow 1 & 2 are much better then this. better mechanics, more options to choose from and actually feel more imersed, this feels just like a top down space marine game
IF SOMETHING DOESNT NEED FIXING DO NOT FIX IT..
hopefully the developers can read....
I've only played the tutorials.
Not worth $60. Animations alone are really... 2000s. Textures seem like early 2010s too at max graphical settings.
Quality is not 2017 in my opinion.
When you activate abilities units, especially Gabriel stands there for a split second (like default standing) before initiating animation. They're not smooth at all.
I didn't like how the orks just slide past and around your frontline like a sieve. There is no real frontline if mobs decide to attack something behind your melee units. So you can't really deploy positional strategy with your multiple variety of units.
Certainly lacking many features that made Dawn of war so intriguingly awesome, However, in it's own way, it is still standing to be aokay, even good game if you play well enough!
Look, its no dawn of war 2. But she's worth a play Its not horrible.
How can anyone sane give this a postive review is beyond me. After Dawn of War 1 and 2, with all the game modes and factions, this piece of cash grab introduces abysmal campaign and multiplayer modes, terrible resource management (both hardware and game-related) with oversized graphics that you are never going to notice much because of camera angles and the number of units on screen. It improves absolutely nothing over its predecessors, worsening pretty much everything that can be in a (otherwise) very successful and valued franchise. Really, do not buy this! DoW 1 and 2 are both better investments and much more gameplay value.
Good game I like it cuz in the grim dark future, there is only WAR!!!!
despite its reviews i stil find this game good i hope they continue again doing dawn of war
Dawn of War 3 is highly underrated. It combines the base building mechanics and playstyle of capturing strategic points of Dawn of War 1 with the special abilities of unit types of Dawn of War 2. The gameplay is very addictive, especially the skirmish mode.
There are two downsides however:
First off, there are only three playable factions. I suppose more factions could have been added, if the game hadn’t performed as badly as it has. I find this very sad, because in my opinion it could have greatly outperformed Dawn of War 1 with additional content.
And second off, the price is a bit high. I wouldn’t recommend buying it at full price, but with a discount of 50% or more it’s a must have for those who enjoyed the first two games.
Don't be fooled by any talk of MOBAs, it isn't a MOBA. It's far more akin to a simplified Warcraft 3. Multiple Heroes with abilities, having to secure locations on the map for additional income, low economy to promote high micro and unit preservation, damage/armour types,
There's no lanes, minions, last hits, neutral bosses, jungle, item shop. It simply isn't a MOBA. It has a ton of issues and bugs (and a campaign AI that is way too passive), so probably pick it up on sale, but it's WAY better than I was lead to believe. It's a shame that it isn't going to recieve more support or updates as it's an extremely interesting game.
The ability to select 3 heroes out of (approcimately) 10 that you can use with multiple different doctrines (perks) gives way more strategic flexibility and build variety. It encourages you to be very active and effective with your units, and losing a squad can be very costly. Base building is present (but limited), there are no buildable defences like turrets (some defences can shoot, but shouldn't be relied upon).
There is so much potential here, but it will never be realised unfortunately.
Playable, but too nerdy, boring and annoying. The interface is bugged, slow and feels incomplete. Control of the units is a mess. It makes for an annoying and frustrating game play with not fluidity and only disrupts muscle-memory. This is a far cry from what DoW 1 used to be.
Replayed this recently for the campaign on hard, but that last level is some grade A micro-heavy BS. The campaign is sloooow, the resources trickle in so slowly and the game moves at a pace that makes Forged Alliance look like the Wipeout games. The hero units are nice, but the game feels noticeably compromised by its MOBA ambitions. The game has fewer factions and less customisation than DOW 1 and fewer tactical elements than DOW 2. Imagine if they had the foresight to make the AAA version of Soulstorm with the Unification mod, all the races and a better campaign. That would have been perfect - instead we got this!
The highlight of the game were the Orks, especially Gorgutz's performance. At one point the Mek tells Gorgutz to hack a console and Gorgutz responds enthusiastically with "Hack the console? Swing them choppers boys!" Green is best and his writing is proper Orky!
TLDR: Go play Soulstorm / Unification instead.
Just to make it clear, the game has a pretty solid rts mechanic even though the devs tried to mix the rts/moba elements together but it works. A lot of units are available & newly introduced "elites" are fun to play with, combined with their unique abilities. Enjoyable campaign albeit predictable, pretty good art design, effects, music & man, did I mention how I love me some of those elites? Okay, I did.
Pop up that forces you to kill the game in task manager that has been a problem since launch.
The game plays well but the campaign is totally garbage. They did well in the base building and unit mechanics, I don't like this stupid moba-like hero garbage, just use DOW1 unit/hero combinations.
How the FUCK does this game not come with a grand campaign like in soulstorm? Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to add this half assed campaign?
I was expecting something akin to a campaign per faction OR just a space marine campaign. Can't play what I want, can't build how I want, can't engage how I want.
It sucks that I have to recommend against this because there's a lot here I want to like it's just cobbled together in a VERY BUGGY and altogether short and boring campaign.
You can add all the MP features you want but if people ditch in the campaign, you'll retain no large community for MP.
SC2 is proof of that.
Also, I sincerely hope the idiot that approved this game without a free for all skirmish mode no longer has a job in the industry.
Completely fucking moronic.
