Certainly lacking many features that made Dawn of war so intriguingly awesome, However, in it's own way, it is still standing to be aokay, even good game if you play well enough!
Look, its no dawn of war 2. But she's worth a play Its not horrible.
How can anyone sane give this a postive review is beyond me. After Dawn of War 1 and 2, with all the game modes and factions, this piece of cash grab introduces abysmal campaign and multiplayer modes, terrible resource management (both hardware and game-related) with oversized graphics that you are never going to notice much because of camera angles and the number of units on screen. It improves absolutely nothing over its predecessors, worsening pretty much everything that can be in a (otherwise) very successful and valued franchise. Really, do not buy this! DoW 1 and 2 are both better investments and much more gameplay value.
despite its reviews i stil find this game good i hope they continue again doing dawn of war
Don't be fooled by any talk of MOBAs, it isn't a MOBA. It's far more akin to a simplified Warcraft 3. Multiple Heroes with abilities, having to secure locations on the map for additional income, low economy to promote high micro and unit preservation, damage/armour types,
There's no lanes, minions, last hits, neutral bosses, jungle, item shop. It simply isn't a MOBA. It has a ton of issues and bugs (and a campaign AI that is way too passive), so probably pick it up on sale, but it's WAY better than I was lead to believe. It's a shame that it isn't going to recieve more support or updates as it's an extremely interesting game.
The ability to select 3 heroes out of (approcimately) 10 that you can use with multiple different doctrines (perks) gives way more strategic flexibility and build variety. It encourages you to be very active and effective with your units, and losing a squad can be very costly. Base building is present (but limited), there are no buildable defences like turrets (some defences can shoot, but shouldn't be relied upon).
There is so much potential here, but it will never be realised unfortunately.
Playable, but too nerdy, boring and annoying. The interface is bugged, slow and feels incomplete. Control of the units is a mess. It makes for an annoying and frustrating game play with not fluidity and only disrupts muscle-memory. This is a far cry from what DoW 1 used to be.
Replayed this recently for the campaign on hard, but that last level is some grade A micro-heavy BS. The campaign is sloooow, the resources trickle in so slowly and the game moves at a pace that makes Forged Alliance look like the Wipeout games. The hero units are nice, but the game feels noticeably compromised by its MOBA ambitions. The game has fewer factions and less customisation than DOW 1 and fewer tactical elements than DOW 2. Imagine if they had the foresight to make the AAA version of Soulstorm with the Unification mod, all the races and a better campaign. That would have been perfect - instead we got this!
The highlight of the game were the Orks, especially Gorgutz's performance. At one point the Mek tells Gorgutz to hack a console and Gorgutz responds enthusiastically with "Hack the console? Swing them choppers boys!" Green is best and his writing is proper Orky!
TLDR: Go play Soulstorm / Unification instead.
Just to make it clear, the game has a pretty solid rts mechanic even though the devs tried to mix the rts/moba elements together but it works. A lot of units are available & newly introduced "elites" are fun to play with, combined with their unique abilities. Enjoyable campaign albeit predictable, pretty good art design, effects, music & man, did I mention how I love me some of those elites? Okay, I did.
Pop up that forces you to kill the game in task manager that has been a problem since launch.
The game plays well but the campaign is totally garbage. They did well in the base building and unit mechanics, I don't like this stupid moba-like hero garbage, just use DOW1 unit/hero combinations.
How the FUCK does this game not come with a grand campaign like in soulstorm? Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to add this half assed campaign?
I was expecting something akin to a campaign per faction OR just a space marine campaign. Can't play what I want, can't build how I want, can't engage how I want.
It sucks that I have to recommend against this because there's a lot here I want to like it's just cobbled together in a VERY BUGGY and altogether short and boring campaign.
You can add all the MP features you want but if people ditch in the campaign, you'll retain no large community for MP.
SC2 is proof of that.
Also, I sincerely hope the idiot that approved this game without a free for all skirmish mode no longer has a job in the industry.
Completely fucking moronic.
With all things considered it's a pretty fun game, it's like Starcraft but in the Warhammer 40k universe. I like how the graphics aren't that demanding... not cause I'm on a laptop or anything uhh
It's okay. I abandoned the campaign after the first mission because it forced me to play as orks for the second one, which I have no interest in. There are only three factions, so skirmishes get boring fast. I do like that the elites gain experience during your games though. I'm a bit surprised that the new primaris units haven't replaced the tired old ones. Maybe in Dawn of War 4...
It could have been more than it was, just like Dawn of War 2 before it, but we never seem to get game developers that know what we want. More factions, more options, more units, more maps. Less important are redone graphics and game-play changes. The critics seemed to like the direction this edition went in, so maybe it's them that the designers make the games for.
I'll recommend the game, but only if you get it 80% off like I did.
fun game that is possible to zone out playing and not die!
is this game good? well me paint this picture for you. im playing this game on a laptop that should not even be running games like this. i have had to put my graphics settings pretty low yet i am still sitting here having a blast
It's an RTS that wishes it was a MOBA, complete with heroes, abilities, cooldowns. If you can look past it's shortcomings there is a fun game here for 40k fans but does little to bring in a new audience. The multiple perspective campaign was a nice touch.
I really want to say good stuff about this game and recommend it, but nah...
This game deserves to be called a disappointing piece of garbage whether you are a Warhammer 40k enjoyer or RTS nerd, or maybe you are just assuming that Dawn of War III should be good since the first and second game were somewhat decent ones.
Production, graphics, design are good, no doubt here. Game visually looks really polished, smooth, mostly really stunning for RTS but this is not Warhammer 40k. Animation, some of the proportions of units, cartoony style, all this kills the atmosphere of what this game should be. Game doesn't offer anything new and tries to utilize some of the mechanics from Company of Heroes and previous Dawn of Wars but in a really lame way possible. Somewhat lazy. It fails to deliver a good, engaging experience, bringing something really new to gameplay. It doesn't even sound like Warhammer 40k 95% of time. Multiplayer is boring and only offers Space Marines, Orcs and Eldars poorly balanced between each other and between game stages. Campaign is lame and forces you to play a boring story that artificially last forever and forces you to play all this "huge" variety of races in "a not so grimdark future". Oh jeez, the last mission will be your longest ever boss fight in your gaming history, believe me. I bet Sekiro or Dark Souls are jealous about how this game nailed a big boss encounter.
Maybe one day we will get the ideal Dawn of War IV, that absolute setting and RTS innovations or give it a new refresh, but for now...just wait for the biggest sale and be prepared to waste about 20-30 hours on something that won't even reward you for this time and money investment.
Conclusion: It would be a great game in Warhammer 40k, despite its problems, if it only had proper support and a bit of love from developers but instead it's abandoned before arrival and developed as a concept and not a finished product. Potential was huge here, especially with all previous ideas of Dawn of War and how other studios maintain their RTSes. Yet, everything went to garbage.
I really think if this game would've gotten more love and less diesrespect by the community, there would have been great updates and add ons waiting for us
This iteration of DoW lost the magic. If this were a Blizzard game, I'd say the aesthetic would be perfect, but it's like a Disney exec took over and decided that the grimdark future was too grimdark and made it look like Overwatch. Gameplay-wise, it's a step backward from both Dow 1 & 2; it goes back to base-building, which may be a good thing depending on your point of view, but everything else is over-simplified like in a mobile game. If you're super into 40k, and this is on sale for very little $, maybe give it a go, but if you're expecting an updated and better DoW game, you're gonna' have a bad time.
Its Warhammer, there is only war and only the destruction of your enemy. Its fun as the other Dawn Of war games. cant wait for them to add other factions. I miss my Necrons and Tyranids.
seems like this game could have been really good but it just isn't.
not bad if you can get it for 10 bucks or under. i got bored halfway thru the campaign.
for 10$ or less, get it.
its fun and exciting causes fast paced strategical thinking
Font size issue. The font is so small I have been unable to read it at all. Since I cant See it and there is no option to increase it I have yet to be able to play the game. Waste of money and piss-poor support in that sense.
You will love this if you are a Warhammer 40K fan. It would have been better if focused exclusively on the Blood Angel's side more. The Emperor of Mankind recommends this!
Great game love the different campaigns.
even though it doesn't have all the factions from the older titles i like how the camera is not as close and do think its well balanced I do see why people like the older games but I like this one most.
If you love Dawn Of War go play old games not this this is not good at all.
Idk, men, but for me, it's kind of fun. When it comes to multiplayer, it's really fun. And yeah, the campaign is fine too me; I don't really play the campaign but skirmish.
The graphics and animation are like Starcraft, but that doesn't matter. It's still fun to play though, and I like it very much.
Man, why the heck is Gabriel Angelos animated like a Paladin from Warcraft III? The tone is completely on its head compared to DoW II. I was hoping for something interesting, but it feels like the devs have tried to hard to ape DotA, particularly the WC3 version, without trying to innovate.
I don't usually write reviews, but I'll make an exception here since I feel this game deserves better.
This game received a lot of hate! Critics claimed it was garbage because it deviated from DOW I and II. Due to these bad reviews, I initially avoided playing it—which was a mistake!
Seven years after its release, I finally bought it on sale in 2024.
And surprise—the game is good!
The units look amazing in their movement, combat, and sound effects (when Terminators fire their weapons, you truly feel their power). The multiplayer is engaging. While the main story isn't the strongest element, and some missions can be frustrating—plus the missing Chaos faction is disappointing—the developers successfully wove the remaining three factions' missions into a decent, interesting narrative.
Give it a try during the next sale. While it's different from DOW I and II, it's far from garbage—it's a solid addition to the Warhammer universe!
Its going back ti the first installments of warhammer 1 and its expansions. Not what the people expected but a great game
takes a lot of RAM, but a good game that captures a lot of what I remember about 40k.
Angelos jumping and doing front flips 20ft in the air in terminator armour. Awful.
Since Dawn of War 4 nowhere on the horizon - we play this mediocre 40k adaptation.
Gabriel Angelos doing flips in goddamn terminator armor - it never stops looking ridiculous.
Ork metal is awesome!
Multiplayer is still alive and alright.
I recently dove into this game and i have to say that i really enjoy it. The graphics absolutely stunning—each character and environment bursts with detail and immerses you in the dark, gritty world of Warhammer.
Honestly, this game turned out to be much better than I expected based some of the reviews I had read. If a game like this is still considered bad and mediocre, I can't wait to try the 1 and 2 of it which was highly praised earlier!
It is a very fun game, it does have the 40k vibe.
Amazing game! doesnt require the most amazing graphics card or PC and still runs amazingly
it was enjoyable and I don't mind the AI matches. I appreciated they shifted from DOW2 and attempted at a different in-game strategy development.
The campaign was very punishing in terms of number of strategies and I did find it annoying in few stages.
It might not be a masterpiece like 40k soulstorm (Truly the apex of RTS) and the other chapters too however, I can play with a couple of friends online and enjoy it for a while!
IF this series gets another game they need to use DoW2 as the base and go from there, worth it only on sale, if you're a 40k fan you should enjoy it
I'm late to try this out. but its great as it is, definitely capable of adding new forces, maps, new units. it still has the ability to grow on. may have released in 2017 and still got the potential to grow.
I played the tutorial and had to build sh!t and fell asleep
0/10 I cant sex the eldar
They don't know what warhammer is. They don't know their own IP. They're trying to tap into that blozzard, clash of clans audience. Trash
i love solo skirmish, just need more maps. i cant get enough of the building up of your armies and their enhancements .... then smashing the enemies, i love the game and cant wait until the new one
Fun game, Though I have had a an issue with playing with my freinds
Rounding out the dawn of war franchise to date
dawn of war 3 is. . . . . different
this game is fun but strange, it feels like a good rts game but it feels phoned in for the 40k franchise
nearly all of the casting is changed and its very bizare, most of the voice lines feel a bit soulless but are decent in execution
the lack of customization in unit upgrades makes the game feel a little rigid when playing
that lower faction count compared to other games makes the game feel empty
and the combat style is. . . . bland?
the workshop support is fantastic
the multiplayer is pretty fun, the somewhat moba elements i think actually feels fun to play and its being hated for not the best reason.
the army painter is fantastic, if you mix in the dawn of war 2 patterns and the dawn of war 3 painter than you could have a butifull standalone army painting tool
if your buying this game for the campaign, its not worth it
if your buying the game for the multiplayer, its not amazing but pretty decent
if your buying this game for a full 40k expierence, you would have a better chance playing the space marine series, trying the modding scene for dawn of war 1, or buy table top sim and join a 40k group on discord to play tabletop over it,
its worth if you can get the game for $10 or less other wise try a different 40k game to try
This is my first Warhammer game, as most of the reviews have put it, this is a good game but not the best sequel.
They dropped the ball.
If you've got the other games in the series, there really isn't anything in Dawn of War 3 to recommend picking up. It's a very disappointing game, even after years of putting it off and sticking to the first 2.
Game play - this is an attempt to combine the traditional base building and larger scaled games of the first game with the moba style heroes and elite units of the second. However, it completely misses the point of both styles of games, and creates a tactical and strategic vacuum that is unsatisfying to play.
We have lost the meaningful base building of the original game, with bases seeming like an add on. During the campaign, your base will rarely be heavily attacked, meaning its pretty pointless and just a resource spending point. Gone has the tactical planning into defensive layouts and the grind for tiers. Tiers exist, but in the campaign you'll be hitting those resource marks sometimes before you even start building.
All the tactical play from Dawn Of War 2 has been stripped out - no cover mechanics (apart from the bizarre shield areas), and all the RPG progression is gone. The consequence of this is the tactical play is simply stripped down to basics. Too often you can form a death blob of units, attack in the general direction of the enemy, and watch it play out. It looks fantastic at times, but it lacks any real decision making. It's slightly better in skirmish, where unit differences can be a foil to one another, but in the campaign, it's a really badly paced design of capturing points, building a base under no pressure, building an army, and then blob attacking.
Atmosphere - it looks and sounds like 40k, on a superficial level, but the art direction made some bad decisions. Everything is super clean, glowing lights, and cartoony. None of the grimdark really comes across beyond the obvious attempts at strong contrasts. It's very pretty to look at, but it's a step down from the previous games in terms of aesthetics. I think enough has been said about the animations - oh Gabriel, look how they have massacred you, my baby boy.
Story - it's not a bad plot, the usual 40k stuff. It's badly told though. Cut scenes are awful, the way you play as all three races causes narrative head aches, and it's a major step down from Dawn of War 2 and it's expansions.
The whole package feels like it had the plug pulled early in development, like they released a product that was half finished and not fully play tested. The lack of races, the gameplay loop, the art style, and story telling all point to something that was well behind in development, not loved by the higher ups, and was gold stamped way before the developers could finish their game.
Go play the original 2 and unless you can pick this up dead cheap as curiosity, don't feel bad missing it as it's as bad people told you.
I tried to give this game a shot but even on sale there is nothing good to say about it.
The campaign is awful, the gameplay is clunky and bad, the unit pathing is horrible, the multiplayer is poorly balanced and bad.
I'd recommend but with some caveats
So why would I recommend it? Well, it's not BAD, it's just not put together all that well. The game looks great, the characters are fun (especially Gorgutz) and the story is pretty decent as far as RTS campaigns go.
So what's wrong with it then?
Some campaign missions are just terrible, and you'll probably be able to tell which ones from the achievements since following missions have a massive drop off in completion, or just from playing it yourself. This is kind of sad since I don't think many people are playing the multiplayer these days so the campaign or bot skirmishing are kind of all you've got.
The game also lacks a lot of polish. There's some baffling design choices with the UI layout such as the back of the mini-map being transparent but still clickable, leading to a lot of unexpected camera jumps. Some other strange behaviours that I can't tell if they're bugs or just poor design choices, like units being very difficult to select and sometimes retaining the UI of a previously selected unit.
I still have no idea what the exp bar at the end of campaign missions does since all my characters stayed at level 1 the whole time and none of the exp was retained. Either this is broken or works in a way that doesn't make much sense, but I'm not that interested in investigating it further. The game is playable without it anyway.
There's more but this already feels too long and I'm certain other people would have mentioned a few other problems as well.
so with all that I'm still recommending it? Yeah, it's basically still fun and mostly works. Stuff blows up real good and the sounds are great. If anything you can see the skeleton of a game that could've been truly amazing with bit more refinement and the removal of some weird design choices.
If it goes on a really cheap sale it's worth giving a shot.
A little different from the other but once controls are learned great game
