Only managed to replay the Empire campaign of this oldie-but-goldie, but 20 years ago I remember playing it quite a bit. One of the few, or potentially the only one, games to manage a unique and interesting spin on the HOMM game design.
The gameplay is still as solid as I remembered it, though to be fair it was with its sequel that I spent the most time. An addicting crawl and conquering of each campaign map, with one main hero and other auxiliaries.
The hero and unit progressions feel satisfying and reward, once you're able to build a unit setup that allows for a balance of damage dealing and mitigation to allow you to take over the map.
The music and character voices is also nostalgic as hell for me. Love them a lot. But the pinnacle of it has to be the 2D art. In this original, but especially in its sequels. Just gorgeous 2D artwork.
While nostalgia has probably impacted this review a lot, I still feel the mechanics are probably still very good. Too bad the series kind of died out. It was a great one.

The game shows its age but its really fun and nostalgic for me, especially the undead campaign! Go in with an open mind and you wont be disappointed, a great time killer if you like older games and fantasy settings.
fun and very addictive games I love it. You chose which one to lead . no one have the edge everyone have weakness and strengh. Good story line too.
Countless hours outside of steam/using the CD, GOG version, etc. The menacing-mood generic-fantasy turn-based-battles turn-based-campaign strategy game. Its only flaw is that it relies on random number goddess too much - it does affect the outcome of your battles and empire building... 9/10.
It's interesting game even compared to it's highly advanced successor, but it's broken beyond any repair. Even with all replacements and fixes, it randomly crashes after any mouse click. Why the hell this is not delisted? Or when Steam will finally start shipping broken games like this with virtual machines or something? If we can have dosbox, why can't we have something similar for other games from 90s?
In one year is gonna be 26 years (!) since the premiere of this game.
And that's why this game deserves the title of a diamond. Why?
Because the diamonds are not getting old!
The gameplay is so awesome, you want to play 'one more round...just one more round"
The rules of fight are not very complicated, yet you have to combine and take a risk to win
Watching units leveling up is very satisfying and descriptions of them is something that makes fantasy world much more attractive
Graphic? Who cares it's so old, if animations, portraits and other state pictures looks great!
I recommend highly - you're gonna have a lot of fun!
This is a good turn based strategy game. It is a very old game. The art style of this game is good. Since its a 2D game it doesn't look that bad. It works on windows 11. Max resolution is 480p and will stretch to 1080p or whatever your screen resolution is. I have amd graphics and i use performance profile to play this game which uses super resolution option to stretch and make it look better.
A good start for Disciples story.
