One of the many nostalgic titles for me. The game starts off as hardcore stealth with the protagonist insisting how he must be non-lethal as he's not an assassin. Much like MGS, the enemies can wake up if knocked out. However the game in the later segments becomes an action game, where playing it as an over the shoulder shooter is marginally easier than going in silent. In Grushkov's section they just gave up and it became a janky action shooter.
It is by no means the best, but if you're tired of the BS 2024 has brought and woke, try giving this a go. This game has what I would call a soviet soul.
The escort missions were a bit annoying, but credit where due the AI had excellent path tracking, something which ubisoft fails at even today. Guess its more important to use the cpu for drm than such things. The gunplay is very janky at long range and inaccurate even at close range as they focused on stealth but the shortcomings are more visible the more you play.
I just finished playing it; it's the classic stealth game you may expect from the early 2000s.I remember picking up on CD back in the day. I never made it past the first level back then, but I was curious to give it another shot.
The game’s stealth mechanics are surprisingly solid for its time, and sneaking around undetected still feels satisfying. The graphics are definitely dated, but they’ve got that retro charm that takes me back. The story is ridiculous and doesn’t take itself seriously at all, which actually makes it more enjoyable—it’s got a quirky, campy vibe that’s kind of fun.
The downside is that the environments are pretty bland. Most of the game takes place in generic Soviet buildings that lack detail or atmosphere. There’s basically no hidden lore, no immersive world-building, and no open areas to explore—it’s all pretty linear and straightforward. Some levels take place in russia (moscow) and some in Ukraine (Chornobyl nuclear plant).
Inventory management and crafting can be a bit of a mess, but it’s not impossible to figure out. Despite its flaws, I found myself having fun with it.
If you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia and can grab when it's on sale, it’s worth a playthrough.
Surprisingly good stealth based old school Splinter Style game. I hate how many modern stealth based games have "fluid movement mechanics" and that honestly sucks. I like to take things slow and steady in a stealth game and this is what this is.
Notice how older games don't have yellow paint splattered everywhere as way point markers? You have to pay attention to audio chatter and actually read the progression log to figure out what to do next. AI is half decent and gun play is fun.
However, the story is very predictable and boring, and the idea that you can make less lethal ammunition, bombs, and sleeping agents out of scrap plastic, metals, and chemicals laying around everywhere on the map is hilarious. Still, interesting mechanics nonetheless.
You have the option to kill enemies, knock them out, and permanently put them to sleep for the duration of the game chapter/level. It's very similar to the mechanics found in Metal Gear Solid, but simplified. They don't even alert HQ to bring in backup at all, so you can knock them out as much as you want without putting them on heightened alert status.
Graphics are decent for a 2005 game originally made for the OG Xbox. For a game that cost me $1, this is a must play game with absolutely zero bugs and glitches. You do need to go to WSGF.org just to install a patch to play this game on widescreen or ultra-widescreen monitors, but that's not an issue at all.
7/10 in my books!
