No the game is old and an imitation of port royal 4
A game where auto trading is broken
If you have a monitor from the last decade, you'll be unable to play the game. The game launches with everything halfway off the screen. I thought it was the stupid Kalypso launcher that was causing problems, so I tried setting up an account with them to hopefully bypass it. I was wrong. It's just the game itself. The fact that it's still for sale is a scam. Avoid.
Short explanation:
Rise of Venice is a fascinating game and it pains me to write it but, i can not recommend it unless you love tideous work and are immune to stress from countless messages and the need to micromanage through lots of menues and lack of explanations as the campaign is - no joke - your lacking and very long, drawn out tutorial. In terms of ideas and complexity and scenario the game is fine. You may not notice the pain points in the first couple of hours. But the more you build up, the more you need to manage and the compexity comes in step by step so the pain grows to a point where at least i switched from a recommendation to the opposite. It hurts because i like lots of elements, but the whole is not good.
What type of game is it?
You are a trader company's head and need to get rich and mighty, because politics are related to your options as a member of the trader guild of Venice. You want to Improve your "aristocratic" title and right to hold more trade convois and gain the right to buy mightier military ships that protect your ships from harm.
While you like to peacefully trade, build up cities so they create more resources and increase your wealth of course pirates attack you and thieves that opponents hire will steal or denunciants will try to decrease your good image in the political world.
While you begin as a little merchant with a tiny ship, a poor guy who manually rides his boat for days to get a few coins, you soon get more options, including trade routes, better ships in size and fighting power and occasionally you find treasures and money making missions by cities who need resources.
What is good about this game?
Well if you read the part above you would say, wow, lots of nice options for economy fun. And additionally you find yourself in an underrepresented but beautiful world of the historical Mediterran Sea including not only Italy but northern Africa and parts of the arabic world. If you play the campaign it is is touching some historical aspects and gives you a good feeling for how difficult and exciting times were in the past. And if you like sea battles, this game does allow you to manually fight and fire cannons - which is nice and has some complexity, but it has lots of new pain elements too.
What is bad about this game?
While you have tons of options how to play, the flow is bad and depening how hard you try it gets overwhelming. Overall the UI is not giving you enough informations, be it what different cities sell and need or the horrible trade route creation system. Plus if you are learning the game, you are not getting introduced and need to spend time to figure out yourself a lot of the complex menues. Plus there is so much that can go wrong, be it story related or when you buy production buildings which do not get resources or produce more then you need which forces you to do a lot of micromanaging things to get them back on track for a while, because everything flows and what is right at one moment may not be so half an hour later in time.
Then you get tons of notices. You may want to expand and buy more trade licenses and warehouses in different cities, but for every little thing that goes wrong you get a notice that does not tell you anything: "watch out city [cityname] has problems" or "look at [cityname]". So you need to again open the town menue, open the "Kontor" warehouse and then you get informations. Additional events like fires, illnesses, trouble with the church and more trigger notices as well. All in all you get bombed with messages and need to spend a lot of time figuring out what you believe you already expect.
All things considered what is most important is the feeling of fun or accompishment. And i did not get that. It has been a hard way from hundred thousand to a million, with ups and dowsn, but after that the money only increased. Even though i could logically grasp the numbers that were telling me that not everything is bad about my management, the countless problem messages made me feel differently.
Conclusion
My conclusion is, do not waste your energy. If it is on sale and you want to give it a try, there are worse games to do so, but remember my words. I could tell you for ages about other features and issues, like the story of trying to defend against pirates which cost me my fortune or the story of my first attempt of building which ruined me and forced me to restart the campaign or the trouble of the sea battles and how i needed to use the internet to figure out how to board the enemy ship - because the campaign forced me to do so and automatic battles seem not do that plus manual battles were not well introduced. And many stories out of the book ;)
Solid cozy and charming game, works well in 2024 on Windows 10.
The Endless Gameplay mode offers:
- has three difficulty settings
- pirate activity is okay and manageable with at least one warrior convoy patrolling the sea
- you can lure pirates to your warrior convoy with trading vessels if you're visually monitoring most of the map
- can pause and manage game speed to your liking
- you get a family with wife/husband and receive access to your spouse's extended family, even generating up to 4 children
- trading is very easy if you make automated trade routes with minimal settings planning
- a bit lacking in the quest department but enough for a relaxing delivery/recovery man experience
- you can loan money but there's a chance you won't be paid. Seems dice/probability based and not related to any details of the loan (I once got the very same loan request twice and one paid back and the other defaulted). Overall more repayments than not.
- can own houses and businesses and having enough tenants can cover your business costs
- climb up the social ladder and become Doge
- get in the graces of the Church, actual 'Our Father' prayer spoken in Churches
I love the builder aspects of this game. While the trade routes are easy to set up, I do not use these much as I want to micro-manage.
