pretty solid game, enjoyed it very much
as someone who got all the endings and read all the logs and hyunae/mute dialogue, this game is a mixed bag. hyunae is a beautifully written character and her struggles are realistic and make you feel for her. the gameplay is unique and fits the sci-fi atmosphere quite nicely. it deals with so many important themes such as patriarchy and the way it affects the small community on the spaceship, dooming them all in the end and causing their downfall. however it is not without its issues, especially considering how flawed every single ending is. it fails to deliever its final message the way this game deserves, throwing it all away to turn it into a dating sim. it feels disappointing after such a compelling story to just end it with dating the ai waifus. the odd homophobia of mute is also interesting, especially the way the game critiques the relationship between hana and oh sojin, who suffered so much only to keep getting disrespected by both ais. I liked that it made sense for mutes character but also the game allowing you to date mute and trying to justify her words feels rather icky. not saying the game is fully homophobic, after all it allows you to date hyunae as both a man and a woman but I dont think the story of oh so-jin got what it deserved. it is not a bad game, just a bit confused on the direction it wants to take. if it just concentrated on the lore and the story it would be amazing but who knows, maybe we can get something like that from the developers in the future
Is like watching a traditional Korean drama, but is set in the future.
The story is fictional, but the setting is based on an actual historical period in Korea, which is the Joseon period.
It was not a great time for women to say the least, and the story got that part perfectly. You will experience two female perspectives in the game, one represents the modern/contemporary way of thought, and another the traditional/obedient way that women were subjected to in the Joseon period.
Is quite a contrast to see the two perspectives, and through each side you will slowly uncover the truth and backstory behind the characters, and eventually all the pieces will connect, and the shocking revelation will leave you speechless. It might not be a best-selling novel, but is certainly a worthy read.
Without spoiling anything, like any VN there is a true ending, and is kind like cheating to get it in game(but is totally worth it), please do experience both 'normal' endings before trying the last one, you would feel much better afterwards.
The story continues in Hate Plus, and it reads your final save file from this game, so the ending actually 'carries' over to the new game, is a very nice touch by the developer, so get Hate plus if you can for the full experience.
Great story, really showed me more than I was expecting it to. I'd recommend having a notepad open for this one if you want to really get the full story, but I managed to eventually connect everything without taking notes, by the end.
It is rare I pick up a VN, but something got me to buy this game, don't remember what it was. Maybe it was half drunk browsing of weird or old games on Steam that I do from time to time, but eventually I found this in my library and was like "wtf? I have this game? Well lets try it, might as well".
And I turned it on with an open mind and got really surprised. This is not the standard 2012 japanese VN type beat that I think everyone kind of got bored of since they can go on for longer than an anime that was never really that good but releasing endless spin offs and arcs that are barely entertaining to keep going. This was structurally different, quite innovative for my taste. Command prompts, having to figure out what is up and then having to sift through a whole bunch of what I assume to be Korean names and put things in boxes.
"This guy is from here, this girl is from that family, this guy is a dumbass".
But, it talks about a really interesting purposefully vague concepts and stories that you have to extrapolate which is genuinely really fun. It feels like the movie principle of "Show, don't tell", but for a game. Genuinely cool that it talks about such topics as I do have exposure to Korean culture and I see where its coming from, yet you are still left guessing how did a internally closed culture managed to regress that hard on a ship that you know nothing about. And its a great concept to toss that you mull over in your head as you read entries and sift through various accounts of people being naturally old culturalistic and sexist and Hyun-ae's perspective which the player would likely align to. Juxtaposition with Mute is great as well, having to bounce between two AI's and chatting about it all felt really cool, although I still don't know how Hyun-ae became the AI, but hey I am fine with ambiguity.
Anyways, the stories and weird aspects of that life that we get shown are really enticing and keep you going all the time. The reactor minigame is great as well! I felt like with this game the formula was switched up every so often and you can go do this and that, it sometimes made you forget you are just a guy on a ship there to download logs, but then you have to go use the terminal and get reminded of it.
Overall, great game that keeps switching things up at a healthy pace to where its always something new. Characters and logs feel well written and Hyun-ae is pretty cool as a character as well. Definitely worth to check out on a couple of evenings you feel lazy to play your multiplayer games.
it's so good
Sickeningly brutal as you spend hours just reading letters from 600 years ago. Did they deserve their fate? Do we?
It's heartbreaking and horrifying to learn what happened to the so called "generation ship" and it's somber to realise that it didn't happen sooner. But what makes Analogue so special is not the big scary whodunnit reveal, but the pages and pages of daily life that subtly and continuously twist a knife into your stomach. Masterfully crafted by a brilliant writer, what makes it work is the videogame interactions, the out of order presentation and the two girls comments and opinions.
The more classical VN elements come out of left field and it's unfortunate to go from reading a horrifying diary page to calling your ai friend a cute detective. The "secret golden ending" should feel like a glorious hurrah for those devoted to the story but it ultimately feels like a shoehorn and a betrayal of what the story is talking about.
Taught me that misogyny sucks actually
I quite enjoyed the story. I don't have a lot to say about it, except that going through the logs and discussing them with the AIs was a great vehicle to control the flow of information. Quite good.
A story-based game that compels you to learn about the characters and their mysteries - it's quite hard to put down once started.
This started out like Her Story, where you watch and read records about a family drama. This one is set in space in the far future and involves two noble families of Korean descent who died aboard a ship.
It's well written and all, but I found the UI incredibly clumsy. You also need to know something about how some Asian surnames work and the gender politics with women and status (which was very low). There was a lot of clicking back and forth, checking for new logs, and there's even an MS DOS like interface that you can "hack" to get even more info.
Unfortunately, this process quickly becomes tedious and after 2 hours of it, I was frustrated and bored. I was having trouble keeping track of all the names and info. There is a family tree available, but you can't hover over the names and see what you learned or anything. The interface is also very plain, consisting of the AI in front of a white background and the expressions change sometimes. They could've put in some nice backgrounds or illustrations to change up.
gives good perspective and questions to think about sexism and understand it
I enjoyed it.
