The control is unnecessarily way too complicated for a shmup and the tutorial is a joke.
beyond expectation - really well made an super fun - since this game is not that old its understandable that there is no unlimited content, - but for what they made and what will come i will dev give this a solid 5*
I'm a big fan of the legacy scroll shooter game and I'm enjoying this game because of it. The game is using unidirectional(forward) shooting rule. In this system, we should keep looking at player fighter to evade bullet and attach enemy. No need to do aiming. This simplicity is the beauty of unidirectional shooting which CYGNI brought successfully.
The Best shooter Game i have ever played.
First of all, go into the options menu and turn off screen shake.
As far as graphics go this is probably one of the prettiest shumps out there. Some of these bosses look amazing and I wish the game had a model viewer.
However the game does not give you a chance to appreciate the background dressing since it constantly tosses enemies at you. You have to give the player a bit of time to appreciate things. (Example is R-type Final)
Actually some of the stages feel too long since it is often the same enemy type over and over again. The developers need to mix it up. The music on the first stage is ok but then it quickly becomes generic war jank.
The gameplay is odd. Pickups go towards health but you need to route power to weapons to use missiles. In games it is often better to clear the screen of enemies rather than try to tank. I was constantly routing power to weapons while spamming missiles. I wish the game would just put power into missiles when your health is full.
The gameplay doesn’t feel good until you have a few upgrades. Actually why have upgrades at all? I wish we just started with everything.
A better Shump and my favorite game this year is Devil Blade Reboot. I would recommend that first before coming here. Also it is cheaper.
Overall this game is OK. Not bad but also lacking when compared to others in the genre.
Games like these needs further post-release update, balancing and adjustments. There has been no update addressing any minor issues after release. Therefore, just like what its own developers did, this game is not worth your attention.
This game doesn't hold your hand, a brief tutorial and then it's drinking from a fire hose from there. But, if you give this game a chance and take the time to learn it then you'll come to find it's a hidden gem. The graphics and visual are very nice, sound is beautiful, game play is challenging and rewarding. Yes, the levels can be long, but the feeling you get once you finally clear the level is amazing.
It's a SHMUP and a good one imho.
This game is incredible. I hope they make an expansion. :)
Just like in the old days
To be perfectly honest, I bought this game almost right when it came out initially and I should have waited. I am an avid real SHMUP enjoyer: I like routing out stages and slowly overcoming difficult bullet patterns while finding my personal balance of safety/survivability and going for the maximum score that is reasonable for me, in expertly crafted games where the scoring systems are all built on risk/reward. CYGNI is none of that; this game is actually an insult to SHMUPs as a genre. You can read all about the pretentious pre-release statements anywhere online, or watch any actual good SHMUP player (such as Jaimers) review this terrible game.
I genuinely regret buying CYGNI and wish I had tried to refund it instantly. As it stands, I'm stuck with this game and have nothing to show for it and no way to get my money back. Maybe I can at least steer you guys away from it though. Seriously, buy Danmaku Unlimited 3 + Crimzon Clover: World EXplosion + ZeroRanger + Hazelnut Hex and get 4 great shmups all for the same price you'd spend on a CYGNI: a pale imitation of what actually makes video games fun.
This is a great game and lots of replay-ability. that being said it does have some problems but it also has some really bad ass things going on so
THE BAD: The game can be a little to chaotic to the point of feeling like there is no way to manage certain section.
Some of the enemy projectiles need work, the green energy lock on missiles that come from the back ground, why give us the ability to shoot two different planes and not let us shoot them before they reach the main playing field it makes no sens
I feel like there is a lack luster amount of customization and power ups but thats just my opinion.
Levels can be a bit long some times
THE GOOD: This game is very high energy like very very high.
It controls very well, very smooth and fast
Obviously this game looks amazing.
You shoot a lot and blow up a lot.
This game is fun, like totally bodacious
Awesome level design.
BASIC TIPS: Start on Easy difficulty get your ship upgraded
First level gives a good amount of money to up grade ship
DON'T DIE.
Decent game! But I can't say I like it. There seems to be too many good ideas crammed in here. The upgrade system isn't very clear, the UI is convoluted & sometimes cryptic. The combat information is really hard to see during a intense fight. The difficulty spike is sometimes unbearable. The levels are really long, really ruins the fun! Doesn't justify the pricetag for my unfortunately. I really looked forward for this game, but somewhat disappointed.
As for the good parts, frame drops aside the visuals are great, the art direction is pretty cool, the controls are okay.
bullets and bullets
I would consider myself a top down shooter guru. I literally love them. That being said yes this isn't an easy game if you don't come in humble you'll lose. If you don't understand the controls, you'll lose. If you don't understand the mechanics you'll definitely lose. The music is good in my opinion and the graphics are a lot but you have to know what you are looking for and how the enemies are attacking you. Long story short I think this is an underrated game and people judged harshly because the suck (skill issue). I recommend this game to seasoned bullet hell players for a fun yet difficult game. I believe in Konami and support their games.
Incredibly bad.
"An unrelenting onslaught of eye-popping visuals"
Oh boy, they aren't joking - good luck making out anything in this visual mess. It feels explicitly designed to be as hard to read as possible.
"ear bursting soundscapes"
Yep, correct again. Music is the worst pseudo-orchestral slop I've heard in years and the sound effects are ear-grinding.
"mind-melting action"
Redirecting more power to weapons doesn't increase their actual hitting power is sure quite a mind-melting design decision.
Most of the enemy and boss design is also mind-meltingly bad: even if player can spot projectiles in the visual noise, some serious effort was spent to make dodging as hard as humanly possible. Patterns? Consistent hitboxes? Forget it.
Game is done by someone who never played any shmups or bullethells, but has an ego of two Michael Bays at once.
ye
Too hard
good game
Any shmup fan can tell you there's a huge difference between classic shmups and bullet hells. Personally, I'm a huge fan of classic shmups, but cannot stand, and I mean CANNOT STAND, bullet hells. Give me Toaplan, Compile, Psikyo, Hudson Soft, Namco, Capcom, Nichibutsu, etc, shmups any day over bullet hells. This game isn't even a bullet hell, it's unbearable. At least bullet hells have patterns that are clear and predictable. The enemies in these game spawn too quick and fire too quickly to possibly manage without being a bullet hell nutjob. I believe it's called insider syndrome, at least that's what I call it. Game developers play their game thousands of hours, thinking they've made a good game, not realizing that anyone else without thousands of hours of experience will not have a good time. Like, at all.
I can't stand this game. You're just pummeled with bullets nonstop, it makes no sense. And it has the same flaw that makes dariusburst so boring, namely giving you thousands of repetitive tiny popcorn enemies that serve no purpose but to make the game superficially appear more exciting. It's not exciting to shoot thousands of popcorn that just scroll by, it's boring and repetitive. I really wanted to enjoy this game (and maybe I will, years down the line, and have a change of heart and enjoy it, it wouldn't be the first time a game has done a 180 for me) because of the modern graphics, but it's just not fun at all. It's overly complicated and hectic. I'd play any classic 80s or 90s shmup over this any day of the week.
I think its great. Don't review games that much but had to give it a thumbs up. Could have gotten it for free on Epic but happy to support the game. Bought it on Steam.
I haven't enjoyed a SHMUP this much since Ikaruga.
fun shmup
Lack of controller support. Game bogs when it gets busy. No support available. Wouldn't refund because I played it more than "2 hours". Well, when the controller I ordered specifically to play this game came in, I had already went past the 2 hour mark. Silly me for not knowing your policies beforehand.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves the old-style bullet hell gameplay but, also, WE NEED MORE!!
7 Stages feels too short to play and we need more story for this game. It has so much potential to be just a one-off.
It Crashed 7 times in the 15 minutes I "played". Open the game? Crash. Change the settings? Crash. Try the tutorial? Crash. Finish tutorial? Crash. Try the first level? Crashed. I'm not dealing with this bulshit. Refunded.
Fun game with great presentation (for a shmup). We even get a bit of a story and actual cutscenes. There are some weird design choices and the basic mechanics are rather unintuitive, but overall it's a good game.
Beginners Advice:
Don't expect a Cave-Style shmup. You can't dodge every bullet, you will get hit ALOT and that's ok. Once you accept that, easy mode is indeed easy, cause enemies drop shield power ups like candy. Focus on destroying with some dodging on the side.
Weapon loadout: Unlock the widest shot asap (upgrade screen, top left menu), set your loadout (upgrade screen, middle menu) to alternate between straight shot and widest shot. This way you can switch between the modes by pressing X (360 gamepad). Alternatively, use a medium wide shot on all slots.
Shield Management: Your weapon energy (red slots around ship) does nothing for your weapon power (yep, it's weird), these are just the weapon slots you've set up in the upgrade menu. So, use them as additional energy shield. If your energy shield slots are full, transfer energy to your weapon slots before you pick up shield energy, or transfer it back, if you're low on shield.
Start with easy mode! Every upgrade you get for your ship transfers over between modes, so it's just masochistic to play medium unupgraded. You can also play missions multiple times to save up energy for upgrades.
Don't get discouraged by the first level, it's one of the longest in the game and the only one with three bosses (again, weird..).
Dope looking bullet hell game.
I went from "I wonder if I should return this" after the first half hour to being glued to my chair and finishing the whole campaign in one sitting. Now that's a dramatic turnaround!
At first, Cygni is crazy confusing. There are a bunch of different shot type mechanisms at play, and 100% of the time your screen is absolutely screaming with enemies, bullets, and explosions. It's one of the most chaotic games you'll ever see, so it's really difficult at first to figure out what in the hell is going on and how to best use your different weapons and aiming modes.
So, here's the thing: Swallow your pride and knock it down to Easy for now. I know, I know, the horrors. I never play on Easy, it's a thing of pride having played arcade and arcade style games since the 1970s. But once I did, I had a little more leeway to understand and for trial and error. So once I did learn when to use the air gun, when to use the ground gun, when to use lock-on vs. manual aim and so on, the game took off like a rocket and now I'm itching for the harder difficulties. And hey, you get an achievement for beating the campaign on Easy anyway, so why not? Also, once you finish the campaign you unlock the arcade mode, which is a significant portion of the game including leaderboards and persistent ship upgrades.
On the downside, the campaign is on the short side and even with an i9 and 4070ti, I had to tinker a bunch to not get frequent framedrops below 60fps (the game's max) at 4K Ultra. For me it was turning off v-sync, MSAA, and turning screen percentage down to 80%. YMMV.
Some people might get turned off from Cygni because it doesn't follow the tried and true shmup formula, but the genre could use some new ideas for a change even if not all of them work. It's a wired, white-knuckle experience, the screen constantly on fire with explosions and bullets and hundreds of enemies. If nothing else it's a hell of a spectacle. 8/10
I went into the game unprejudiced, never having heard of Cygni AGB before. Neither did I know about its development history, nor did I read any marketing promises before buying it on a whim... and I had fun.
Cygni is not an Arcade Shmup (or Japanese style STG), it is closer to a Computer Shmup or "Euroshmup". Think Raptor: Call of the Shadows.
Typical for a Computer Shmup among other things Cygni:
- Has seven levels that are longer than your usual Arcade Shmup level. A full run takes about 1.5 hours and there is saving in between - once beaten - selectable levels.
- Has a power management mechanic with shield and weapon levels that allow you to tank hits and change damage output.
- Has enemies with lots of health, especially on the ground and long waves of the same “patterns”.
- Has purchasable permanently unlocked upgrades.
- Does not rely that much on bullet patterns or learned ideal paths.
- Is not meant to be playable with an arcade stick. It is a twin stick Shmup with analog controls that allow you to move as slow or fast as you wish and to slightly angle your shots independent of your movement.
[*] Favors highly detailed, cinematic 3D graphics with a 16:9 top-down perspective over stylized graphics in a tate aspect.
With these attributes listed, it becomes clear why “core Shmup Fans” may dislike Cygni. It is a different type of shooting game than what would live in an Arcade and that got meticuously balanced around a distilled core mechanic.
What the game does not have that would be typical for a Computer Shmup is inertia and a pixel perfect hit detection. There is no stopping inertia and the ship immediately moves as fast or slow as you tilt the analog stick. I find the controls to be a lot of fun. They are more precise and versatile than with an arcade stick. Likewise the hitbox of the player ship strikes me as larger, but not pixel perfect.
Still I get it, because I love my Aleste, Tiger Heli, DoDonPachi, Blazing Star, Ikaruga, Darius, Crimzon Clover, Andro Dunos II, Gunvein, Drainus, Devil Blade Reboot, etc. I am no stranger to Danmaku and will get out my home built Brook based Arcade Stick with Sanwa parts for them.
But knowing that Cygni is more of a Computer Shmup than an Arcade Shmup, I don’t care as much about carefully crafted bullet patterns, memorizing the best path, not getting hit or even high scores. The game has gorgeous 3D graphics with a fitting soundtrack and sound design, as well as lots of options to upgrade your ship. Cygni is fast and frantic, sometimes makes you though it through the time it takes to take out extremely bullet spongy ground units, just to go back into a frantic onslaught of airborne enemies. I enjoyed the level designs and found it all diverse enough to not get boring. The graphics and amount on screen was never too much for me and just right to be thrilling.
Here is how to play Cygni: Play the Tutorial first, then start on Easy and, while experiencing the game for the first time, collect some currency in passing to upgrade your ship. Then beat the higher difficulties with or without upgrades, that’s up to you.
Is it perfect? No. Besides some imperfections in design there can for example be rare stutters (Ultra Settings on a 3080TI with a Ryzen 9) and apparently there are performance issues in high difficulty, which I have not encountered yet myself. But so far nothing has hindered my enjoyment. It is a good Computer Shmup.
Is Cygni a casual game or even akin to a mobile game? That’s a loaded and irrelevant question. Here is a better one: Are you having fun with the game? I am. Just like I am having fun with Arcade Shmups, but for different reasons.
I am glad Cygni exists, because a decent Computer Shmup makes for something refreshingly different. Just like I might want an orange once in a while after having had apples for a week.
Have fun!
OMG guys what are all the negative this game is great, fast pace, great bosses, and it is by far the most beautiful shooter I have ever seen. Give it a try I caught it on a small sale. Love the soundtrack.
not a fun game for a casual gamer feels like this game is for tryhards
Game is great
It's not just a brainless shooter, you have to switch between weapon or shield energy, having more weapon energy allows more special attack, and a full shield offers more points for upgrade later
You also have to switch between air and ground attacks, and choose a strategy to defeat enemies on both
Art is amazing, background is really alive and blend nicely with foreground, most of the bosses are well integrated too, all of that makes you feel like you are in a real world
Some levels adds a bit of strategy by restricting areas (expect for 6 and 7 which i found a bit more boring), and enemy diversity adds some thinking too
A bit of a downside : the upgrade panel is not very clear, i don't understand what the '50%' means on top of a weapon slot, the weapon sprites you have to unlock on the left are all the same you have to look really closely to see a difference
I would love an 'on hover' information bubble to explain all of it
It could be nice to also have a sandbox to try out the new weapon you just bought
Because first i didn't understand what weapon pattern i bought, and then i had to figure it ou on a level with everything blasting around
There might be too much cinematics, given some of them don't add much to the story, they are visually great tho
All in all it's great, and you have some trophies and scoring system if you like to try hard
Go get it
This game is visually stunning and even beautiful I'd say, but that's sadly where it ends. It's confusing, annoyingly repetitive, the controls are totally weird, and the weapons system and upgrades are just sad and boring. To sum it up, it's a beautiful mess. I don't want my money back because I've loved Konami since I was a kid and want to support them, but this game is a disgrace to the shmup genre.
Cool for what a shooter. I find myself wishing I could shoot 360.
i got this when it's still free-to-play, so no problem for me lmao
Fun game but way too short.
why konami release trash game?
DO NOT LISTEN TO NEGATIVE REVIEWS!!.... if youre looking for a game from the arcade era, this is it!!! perfect!! its exactly like the old "put a quarter in and 3 lives" arcade game. I love it
butt scene is necessary
This game is fire. Where the hell is the cross between DonDonPachi Resurrection Black Label and a graphics overhaul like this? The genre needs a revival. This I think took that step.
I think the whole game is just a mess. There is nothing to like about a game that offers nothing but hectic movement with bad controls. The game is extremely resource hungry though there is nothing great to say about the graphics. I think it does not look much better than skyforce reloaded on my iPad Pro but without a NVIDIA 4070 you should not even try. It will stutter and control is impossible to maintain. That is ridiculous. The soundtrack is really the only thing that shines.
it looks so good... and plays soooooo bad, please dont waste your time or money on this one
