This game does space combat right. I just wish it met the scope of games like Elite Dangerous and No Mans Sky. Alas, unlike the mentioned games, the limited scope of Everspace 2 is done very right. Lots of ways to design your ship. Combat is smooth. The UI is simple and effective. The devs clearly understood the value of an interface that is well polished and doesn't interfere with your game experience.
Reminds me of the old Freelancer game. Very good combat.
This game was a great surprise! A very nice mix of space combat and exploration, shooter looter mechanics with RPG elements, ship customisation, perks, puzzles, beautiful graphics and a decent story in an open world. The game play is a lot of fun and very addictive. I very much recommend Everspace 2 to anyone who likes flying spaceships, space combat and exploration.
While this is not top tier story telling or breakthruogh gameplay mechnizm THIS is a DAMN fine game. Polished to a high shine, looks and sounds amazing. This is the pew pew in space I needed even though I did I know I needed it. From all of the 8/10 this is the 10/10. Pure fun and adrenaline.
This game gets better, the longer you play it. During the first hours of playing it, it fells unrefined and shallow. The quality of the planets design, the quests and all space arenas increases greatly after a few hours - just like the developers learned to get better along the way and did not go back to the early phase of the game.
I hang on to it, but I'd recommend to wait until this game receives a few quality patches that may improve the experience early on.
Fun space shooter sim. I really enjoy the environments and exploration. Combat is frantic and definitely presents challenges, on a controller I feel a little bit hamstrung without a dedicated Roll function but otherwise controls are fluid. Story is decent and the variety of missions is alright, though the encounters do start to fall into predictable buckets with different scenery. My biggest gripe is that the on-planet locations are HORRIBLY cluttered and make everything slow to a chugging crawl, I had to reduce all my graphic settings to Low in order to keep the framerate tolerable. I can run High/Ultra in every situation except when the mission takes me planetside or the 'shipping/customs' locations with lots of scanners and vehicles around. That being said, its a very nice looking game even on Low graphics settings, its just no longer breathtaking. Hope the devs get those optimization issues ironed out. Overall this is a very enjoyable way to zip around going pew pew pew in outer space, excited to see what the DLC and future updates hold.
"inertial dampeners off ability" makes this game better than most space combat games. the combat has some interesting mechanics to it and you can device different strategies. i preferred a "high speed hit & run" tactic.
+ variety in equipment and weapons
+ there is some kind of plot and characters
+ ship designs are cool
+ inertial dampening off option (newtonian physics)
+ a lot of content (although kind of shallow)
- plot and characters are quite bland and uninteresting
- game has over reliance on "hold button down a few seconds to active something" type of controls. it makes interacting with everything annoying and slow. this also applies to some parts of the combat (the long range weapon).
!!! you want to streamline the ui so that a player that knows what they are doing can go trough the desired actions quickly unhindered by waiting and holding down buttons - this gives the game longevity (less annoying in the long run).
- kind of repetitive
- searching for secrets is boring (missed opportunity)
Finished the story...60~65% of the time is with the puzzle which sucks. My feeling is instead of working on combat mechanics and enemy, the dev poured their valuable time on puzzles which isn't what I expect from Everspace title. I wasted time in tight space like rats in a pipe trying to do annoying puzzles rather than getting shot or blow something up. If there'll be Everspace 3 with the same mindset, you ain't getting my money again.
This game feels like the game Rockfish wanted to make with the original Everspace, but lacked the means and time to do so. The pivot from rougelike to adventure RPG has upset some, but it's also allowed them to flesh out their world to a new degree, and expand their gameplay loop to match. The writing and acting is corny, but deeply passionate, and the worldbuilding succeeds at giving the DMZ plenty of character.
For those unfamiliar with the original, this game is an arcadey space shooter, controlling various combat fighters with full freedom of movement, boosting, weapon hardpoints, munitions launchers, and various offensive and defensive abilities. The moment-to-moment gameplay is fast and fun, with plenty of tools to aid movement, combat, and exploration, and plenty of varieties of loot to chase after. I only regret not having more of this game to explore, at the time of this review.
Honestly, it just feels perfunctory. Like, "what's the best way to keep the player playing" and not "what's the best way for the player to have fun"
AC Odyssey was the same. Make the world empty but large and that'll be good, right?
It's fine. But very boring very quickly. Once I snapped out of my 2nd "I really feel like being in this chilling phase of life" I wrote this review.
I want to recommend this game. Honestly. However, there's too many parts that are incredibly frustrating. I loved the game until the drone sections which seem completely out of place. The controls are so frustrating in these sections that it ruins the rest of the game for me and, while I love the combat, the loot system, and the graphics, these sections were so frustratingly bad that I didn't have fun finishing the game. If there was a way to skip these parts, I'd recommend the game. But when I had to spend 3 incredibly frustrating hours on one of the drone sections because of bad controls, I can't recommend it.
Beautiful looking game, but the game play is a miss for me.
Story so far is meh, still frame pixel art scenes with the typical meh moments.
Zones can be super amazing with how good they look, but I just can't stand the wack a mole / puzzle objectives.
Few of the ship designs are cool, but didn't feel like a big enough change. I liked the gun ship with the turret on top, but felt like the diablo like loot system was holding my hand. Constantly going to side points looking for scraps for upgrades was meh.
Like I said, great looking space game, just couldn't get into the puzzle adventure. Could be up you're alley, just not mine.
Super fun game. Easy to get into and easy to pick back up if you leave in the middle of a play through. Its simply what a good game should be.
Everspace 1 was action packed and a thrill to ride all the way through. This game Everspace 2 is so effin slow, im dying of boredom. playing with cellphone in the other hand is an absolute must. Too much story, Too much dialogues, and then it follows this perpetual sequence: land here, skip dialogue, cruise speed to another planet (loading screen) land on a dock, skip dialogue, (loading screen) go to another dock, so on so forth. There is literally nothing to do, combat is very scarce and you must go looking for it otherwise it wont find you, enemies are generic all the way through, no special nothing, no crazy abilities, no different types of enemies. Nothing interesting or different or new. Missions filled with unskippable dialogs, and then you have to dock somewhere and skip dialogue. This game has nothing.
Yes it has glorious visuals, if you are a space photographer here is your game. They turned the title into a walking simulator on space. This cannot and should not be labelled as an action or arcade game. Its a visual novel. Everspace 3 no thank you, goodbyes. I will never recommend this yo anyone. This is civic duty.
Too repetitive, I haven't even made it thru the initial portion of the main story yet and am bored out of my mind.
Fly to place, shoot some things, solve the same puzzle you have solved 35 times already, fly somewhere else.
Not super gripping game play. There are plenty of way better space sims out there.
The game is what it promises.
Strength:
- Riddles
- Combat
- characters / story
- Graphic & design of the locations is awesome, quite the beautiful world they have created.
- Difficulty is greatly balanced,
Late game builds get challenged only by nightmare though but at some point and a long grind your endgame gear is combo'ed into god mode but with all the time u needed to get there, it feels very deserved!
Getting to endgame was a lot of fun, and even now i have stuff to be busy with to keep playing on and maxing my loadout.
Every ship has its own style, sets and combo's you can put together.
This is a very fun well written game. At first I was concerned that it would be a shoot-em-up type game, but the story and missions (jobs), ships inventory, crafting and other feature are quite good. The voice acting and characters are very well done. This is really fun. I play on a beefy PC and on Steam Deck. Cheers to the ES2 team. I hope there will be a ES3 soon, I will buy it.
My god the dialogue and the voice acting is atrocious. Game play is great though, every conversation lasts way longer than it should and no substance....and almost every actor is monotone, it is some of the worst acting and dialogue.
But again game play is very good its easily some of best arcade style space shooting there is.
Pretty great space sim, really easy to learn and yet so much diversity in what you can do and upgrade.
Very fun game. I love the world, the natural way characters talk to each other, and HIVE. I just love HIVE.
The ship types, weapons and devices are interesting.
The visuals are stunning. The space techno is amazing.
My only complaint is the secret puzzles are a bit tedious, take so much time, but then again, you don't have to do them - or you do, cuz they give powerup. Would be nice if there were less in the future, or at least have some indicators.
i really like the first one so i was hoping for more of the same but it does not capture the feel of the first one at all.
controls are not great either, activating the emp is a lottery win for me, i dont know why
bomb thrower turrets, you can shoot it forever but wait it will only be destroyed it you throw the bombs it is throwing at you back at it...FUCK OFF
This game is awesome. Reminds me a lot of freelancer, though i'll admit It's been many years. I just can't stop playing this game though. I'm not really a story driven person but i seem to be interested in these characters and story line. It's a must play for me.
This is all I wanted from Everspace 1 and more.
No time limit. Free exploration. Space Combat. Many ship types. Memories of Descent 3, but in space. Trading.
OK it gets a tad same-y after a while but I love it so far.
Worst thing I can say so far is that I really would have liked if jump to hyperspace was not behind a loading screen. Seriously you guys (devs), hyperspace screeen is mostly empty, why does it need a loading screen that changes my bearing? you really couldn't load this in the 2-3 seconds it takes to power up the drive?
Not sure I would want to have paid 60 bucks for it, but as I got it on sale, I got my fill.
Really, 60 bucks is likely too high, but then again, I don't pay that for AAA games. It's good to be a patient gamer :D So I'd say, get it on a sale and if you like pew pew space games that are mostly just shooting things and not managing boring stuff like "deploying hardpoints" you'll be happy
Good combat, music and map design.
The game's only flaw that it's overstays it's welcome.
Regardless i can highly recommend it!
This game is great. I got the first one 4 or 5 years ago and loved it. This takes what was great and just adds so much more. Like loot? Like zipping around on every axis while blasting things like a Colonial Viper? Like looting loot to upgrade your loot? Like exploring? Depth but not too much, scratching many itches. Only complaint about the first one was the timers that kept you from fully exploring, and that is a non issue in the second game. Its a no brainer on sale. May as well grab the first one to, its .99 on sale.
Really an amazing game. Wish you could have a little more exploration outside your ship, but after spending more than 100 hours playing the full version and 20= hours on the early access version, get this game!
Great game! lots of fun. very addicting
FUN FUN FUN OMG SO FUN SPACE BATTLES PEW PEW PEW BOOM BOOM RUNNIN CIRCLES AROUND NPCS SOOOOO FUN OMG
This game has been on my wishlist for a long time, with latest sale I gave it a shot and it is great. Wish I bought this before. Decent spaceship combat with interesting story and progression.
For the start the game is very casual and enjoyable, it is easy to reach missions and do stuff. Lot's of selection for guns/ships etc.
The story is made in such a way, it consists of some slide shot style clips with decent voice acting and it is for me interesting too.
This game shows you do not need to spend millions of dollars for developing a good/accessible/fun game.
Great game with lots of variety to the missions with puzzles and combat. If you like old space flight games like Freelancer, Star Lancer or the original Everspace you will really like this game.
Game turns into a snooze-fest after a few hours
Space combat gets boring after a couple of hours
The puzzles and exploration get repetitive real quick and seem to be the real focus for the game
This game is the spiritual successor to Freelancer/Privateer, exceeding them in every way. I did not expect much at first but it turns out to be my favorite game so far this decade. Total sleeper.
Great controls, fun campaign story that doesn't take itself too seriously yet instills a sense of urgency and accomplishment. There is no branching story arcs leaving you wondering "what if...", the campaign is long and satisfying. Endless side-missions, jobs and exploration to build out wide, and cool challenge scenarios keep you playing long after the campaign epilogue. Grab "Titans", adds even more.
Outstanding graphics, and level design is top-notch. Plenty of ships and customization to give you some down-time fun. Puzzles break up the monotony of combat and in-game data details each sector, pointing you to 100%, for you completionists.
If the dev team stays true to this formula, I see a great future for this game to come. Looking forward to "Aethon"
*edit - Plays great on Steam Deck too.
this is a puzzle game NOT a space shooter like freelancer. The controls are horrible. I've tried for 5 hours to like this game, i keep giving up, i don't like the feel, the way it plays, the stupid puzzles, constantly going through tiny spaces, man I just want to fly and shoot. If you want a puzzle tiny pipe crawler then this is the game for you. If you're looking for something along the lines of freelancer or rebel galaxy, keep moving.
seems like a cool game, but i can't deal with another generic military man main character
It starts with promise but it turns dull and boring fairly quickly. Side quests and challenges are repetitive at criminal offense level - boring again. Overall, keep your distance and stay away—and I mean galaxy-far away!
could be a great game but totally failed because of those stupid "puzzles"!
At first u will find these puzzles only in side missions, but later u must solve them even in main missions.
It is fine if u wanna add some RPG elements in this type of game but still those puzzles are not even "rpg", not for the players of Freelancer/ GOF/ Everspace, it's just not for me... come on, get ur battle ships, fly over deep space, leveling up, achieve more powerful weapons, shoot through the f*cking universe, that's it!
Rockfish wants u to dig into caves, go through tiny pipes flying mini androids , move energy balls between doors inside wrecks, search space garbage to find a "clue"... u CAN do that in a 3D space adventure (shooting!) game, but not so MANY and so ANNOYING as in this game!
I'm so disappointed as i spent over 100 hours on it and now wanna quit it anytime...
Awesome space flight sim, although I burned out fairly fast doing repetitive open world tasks, I know some enjoy the nature of finding new areas to solve the same kind of puzzles in ad infinitum.
while space fights are fun, it gets repetitive quickly. Also, the worst parts are the puzzles I didn't ask for. I expected a space fighter sim like wing commander. I got puzzles I didn't want.
Regardless of being silly like most space games, it's an enjoyable romp.
Just don't take any of it seriously -- it's not reality.
Neither was StarWars after all. Yet we all lowed it regardless didn't we!
A solid SDOF space fighter game that surpasses the original in every way. Unfortunately the game runs out of progression about 2/3rds of the way through the story but it's worth playing all the way through.
A solid space shooter ruined by story, grind, and puzzles.
The good:
* Combat. It's fun - stuff explodes, you get better loot, so stuff explodes faster, enemies get stronger again, rinse and repeat.
The bad:
* Story. Boring and cringey. All characters are one-dimensional and you don't care for them one bit.
The ugly:
* Puzzles. People in the future have decided to store their stuff in locked chests in the outer space. These chests can be unlocked by shooting lights (in the correct order) and finding power sources / orbs scattered in the vast space around. This horrendous security choice gets old pretty quickly.
* Grind & Time-wasting travel. Traveling in the space is slow. Luckily you can unlock fast-travel - by doing challenges (see "puzzles" and "combat") that require A LOT of slow traveling. Fast-traveling unlocked, hooray! ... Oh wait, you've entered a new solar system - the fast-travel no longer works. Guess what? Yes, more slow traveling and challenges.
Closing words:
We still miss you, Jun'ko Zane.
Very well implemented, interesting, and fun.
Lots of hours of content. I have now 15 hours and I'm still discovering the first part of the map.
The amount of loading screens could be reduced, and the missions could be less repetitive... but it's ok.
Simple mechanics, ok story. Good distraction/game.
TL;DR: It's good, use flight sticks if you have them. 8/10
This was probably one of the hardest games for me to get into initially, but once I did it was a lot of fun. Playing with Mouse and Keyboard is a bit clunky so I would suggest using a controller or if you have them, flight sticks. The game is arcade-ish but that doesn't take away from the fun of it, as once I used my flight sticks the game really opened up to just how fun it can be. A side note though, a friend of mine who likes pedals as well can't use them without third party programs.
The story is very short, to the point where you can reach the 4th quarter of the story by level 15 if you just rush the story missions. With Max level being 30 this can make things frustrating, so do some side missions and Mission Decoders. The story itself isn't too crazy, it's interesting enough that I didn't skip the voiced cut scenes. I wouldn't expect it to win any awards either.
Some Helpful advice, if you can find Mission Decoder items do them immediately. A lot of gear can be earned from these and they give a lot of EXP. Unknown Signals are also a good source of EXP, Items, and Resources. Make sure to do them from time to time. Try to get at least a Green Grade ship from the shipyard before going to the Union, I would even say to buy a second type of ship to upgrade along with your primary ship. I've wasted a lot of time and money on switching from Gunship to Interceptor to Vanguard and back.
Finally, Endgame is a bit grindy. If you enjoy just flying around and shooting down other ships, endgame should be fun for you. You can run decoder missions, incursions, and do the games rogue like arena missions. There's quite a few legendaries to collect, and ship customization to unlock to make your perfect space ship.
Overall I think the game is really good, well worth the price and if you can get it on sale too it should be a no brainer.
8/10
I was a bit uncertain at the start. However, having played thoroughly through this game i can honestly say it is now one of my favorite games and will return back to.
Pacing
Going from the demo to the actual game felt really nice. In the demo, you get to explore the first sector of the first system and have full reign to get a feel for the game. Once you get the game, you kick start from where ever you left off in the demo and are able to play through the story. As for the story, I will say i was thrown for a curve ball having read a bit of the lore you get access to which didnt make much sense up until the BIG problem became clear. I will say the writing for the very end is a bit cliche but for the introduction of all the characters and how they were developed and side quests building on the world was relieving to see. Rarely do i see side quests in games build on the world.
Gameplay
This is not a true flight sim and that's perfectly okay. I was told early one that it was uncomfortable for flight sim people because the ship doesnt re-balance but with a space ship game i fail to see the need for that all the time. There is no true right side up all the time so the idea of rebalancing yourself "right side up" is more so hoping that your crosshairs recenter and your ship levels out to that position. I get why people would be picky about that but I didn't find it to be a huge deal. The combat is space dogfights with your ship type and armaments dictating how you fight. The simplified dmg types allow you to not have to forcefully mid max your stats or find every collectable for a small incremental boost in power. If you are put off by the small weapon selection, know that weapons firing patterns change drastically depending on the version you get them in. Named weapons, and weapon modifiers alter weapons and sometimes you may not like how a weapon performs regularly up until you get a different version of it. This concept allows one weapon to have many variations which helped relieve my anxiety since I do like weapon variations.
I don't know what else to comment on. It was just a fun solid game and i had little to know issues with it. Outside of the cliche ish ending, the jobs where you need to find a cargo container that is hidden were a bit obnoxious. Besides that, I liked everything else. I have not played the DLC but i dont think i will seeing as the reviews say its a crappy buggy mess, but I have interest in what else the dev team decide to make.
quite fun. tickles a bit of the Freelancer urges, but is by no means better. There's no real choices in factions to side with, there's very few wingman missions or even cruising in a group together, much of the gameplay loop is quite repetitive.
Good bones, but could've been much much better.
Where do I begin.
A Sick Loop in Space
I played this when it was in early access in game pass back when legendaries weren't a thing. I think I clocked around 85 hours or so there, and purchased a steam copy since steam gets the "legendaries" update first. I estimate an extra 30 hours of offline playtime here on steam that's not logged into my total hours. I restarted the campaign on steam though since I would've jumped through hoops to continue my game pass play through. Maybe a majority of the time spent was on doing maps (a-la path of exile), exploring or just flying about, and eventually doing rifts when I decided to continue on with the story. But combat is extremely fun, and it's what actually what made me lose track of the story progress.. You can think of it as diablo in space or something, and it's done well. So well that I got stuck in an addicting loop of just doing maps, bounties, contracts, answering distress calls, and checking out new ships being sold in "town" [in Prescott, I think?] and selling all the crap my tractor cannon picked up. Hell, I didn't even know there was a final tier of ships that could be unlocked until my final 10 hours of my game time. That was a neat surprise. The Rifts that got unlocked after I finished the story were a blast to farm as well!
Half a Sim
This game started off as a mix of diablo and skyrim, with a bit of cowboy bebop sprinkled on top. There's loot, plenty of enemies to shoot at, and some pretty neat exploring all while -personally- roleplaying as spike taking on bounties and contracts. This game eventually got me into trying out a dual stick setup with a couple of logitech 3d extreme pros, but eventually convinced me to get a couple of vkb glads both with omni throttle setups to feel like I'm piloting Spike's ship from the anime. Practical? nah. Fun? Hell yeah. I played this with both MKB and HOSAS, and it's definitely way harder with dual stick controls, especially on the hardest difficulty. But dang, if you have a couple of sticks, this game is begging you to use them due to the extensive control customization! Definitely one of the best control options in a lot of space games I've played. You can bind an alternate button to functions. You can bind conflicting buttons to multiple functions. You can bind modifiers to add to buttons as well. There's deadzone adjustments to every axis, not to mention sensitivity values. Hell, you can even combine keyboard or controller presses with your sticks if you want. and I cannot stress enough how fun this arcadey game feels with the inertia dampeners turned off. And hoo boy, the moment they added the option to "press inertia dampeners" instead of toggle made it so that it felt like a brake button was just icing on the cake. It's not a full on sim experience, but you can configure it to be a bit more of a hybrid of sorts, and I love it. It's just superb.
Dakka Dakka
And dear god, the ships and the weapons! I started off maining the device-oriented lightweight that kinda looks kind of like Faye's ship, which I thought was pretty OP and cool at the same time. Later on, I fell in love with the heavy gunship with all its... well, guns. 4 Autocannons ftw! Eventually, I switched on over to the bomber when legendaries started dropping. Gotta love that multi-missile launcher! And you can equip multiple copies of them that it's stupid! and with the intuitive control customization, it's a breeze to cycle between them. Damn, that's a fun time.
Man, I really want to thank the devs for this game. Looking forward to your next release/DLC.
The passion that went into this-
Just, thanks, Rockfish.
I've been interested in this game ever since I kept confusing the series with Endless Space, and I've enjoyed every moment of it.
This game may have very positive reviews, but looking at the achievements, by act 2, only about 20% of players remain. This game isn't for everyone, even if you like this type of game.
The story is atrocious, and the main character is just awful. The loading screens are terrible. You'll have a loading screen to jump into hyperspace. Hyperspace itself is basically a loading screen (you can't really do anything here other than select a destination and wait to get there) then another loading screen for your destination. Depending on your pc, these loading screens could take 1-2 minutes each. Meaning, you have to just sit there and wait about 5 minutes between actual stuff happening every time. Oh, and if you are going to another star system, that's 2 more loading screens on top of the rest. It really takes you out of the game.
If you can deal with all of this, then the actual gameplay and combat is very fun. The ships are interesting and fun to play. I recommend having a movie or something ready you can watch in between areas. It pains me to recommend this, as I'm a very story driven person, but you may want to consider just skipping the story entirely. It's that bad imo. The gameplay is great, so, I'm still giving this game a positive review.
