As a Digimon fan and getting back into the franchise as a whole, my experience so far with Cyber Sleuth is all around positive as I've just done the final boss for the first game and proceeding with HC.
In terms of issues, the only one I have is with the tutorials that occur again when doing either game despite having completed either one which, I will not lie, can take the fun out of experiencing a new story but been given the basics of both the battle + hub system.
Other than that, I see no other issues at all as so far, I am thoroughly enjoying the story especially when you get past the text heavy first half and learn more of the characters back story. Heck, the final five chapters made me feel emotional and more connected to the main cast of the first Cyber Sleuth and I expect the same with Hacker's Memory.
Overall, the gameplay, graphics, as well as easily accessible menu is amazing and I'd recommend it to both new and veterans of the series if you wish to get back into or wish to start.
So far this game rocks. it feels like Personalite in a good way. often those games have to much bloat that it slogs at certain points . this game cuts that and lets the core game loop shine. Story is fun in that way anime can only be. so far i would recommend
The turn based combat is pretty simple but very intuitive, dynamic and fast paced compared to previous turn based Digimon games since the PS1 days. It feels like a very straight forward evolution of games like DW2, DW3 and the DS Titles with some SMT / Persona influence. Collecting and managing mons can get a bit grindy but it still a very enjoyable experience due good variety to engage with the system mechanics and decently expansive evolution trees.
The thing I dig the most about this game tho is how it taps into a wide range of themes within its writing, it can vary from pure nonsense (and hilarious) japanese humour to complex social problems or some deep web creepy stuff (really, there are some crazy sub stories out there in this game).
I just really appreciate how Digimon always had something to say about plenty of complex human / society problems since the animes, even if it doesn't get as deep as something like SMT / Persona games when talking inside the JRPG spectre, but it's really nice to see that the series still doesn't play the safe route of writing stuff that appeals mostly for kids, not that there's anything wrong with that, but it feels refreshing when compared to other similar games / series.
Now, when is the next Cyber Sleuth game coming out? I'll probably be there day 1 if it happens, this is the good stuff 👍
I got this game with the intention of playing through it with my wife. Since she was at the helm for the entire game, these are her thoughts:
"At first glance, this game should have been a wonderful trip through my nostalgic feelings for the Digimon franchise. Familiar faces, goofy attacks, all the bells and whistles of what made Digimon great. What I got, however, was nothing short of a pedantic slog of an experience.
"The digivolution system is almost entirely nonsensical, where you'll get a Digimon and think "oh, they're supposed to digivolve into this other one that I REALLY want" but the digivolution trees just send you on this weird rabbit hole. Plus, the system of needing to digivolve, then de-digivolve, and then digivolve them again to HOPEFULLY get the Digimon you ACTUALLY want is just useless padding and doesn't enhance the gaming experience. It instead makes it arbitrarily frustrating and acts like more of a timesink than anyone should be expected to endure.
"Storywise, the direction is all over the place. The game attempts to be this deep philosophical dive into metaphysical terminology and spaces, but really, it's just another 'we have to save the world because humans screwed up' that gets wrapped up in tons and tons of random battles. The game is built around annoying grinding and leveling and de-digivolving. I spent 77 hours playing something that really should have only taken half that time.
"I would also question why only a select few shops sold actually relevant and necessary items, like revives and stat boosters, especially near the end of the game when you really can't leave to go to other areas. You essentially get locked in during Chapter 18 and have to hope you have enough of those items to get through the final dungeon and both phases of the Final Boss.
"To summarize, the game felt much longer than it needed to be. It felt like watching a movie you could see all the plot beats for, but you can't leave and have to sit through it for another 2 hours while the movie acts as though it's super clever. I would only recommend this game for people who have a lot of time on their hands and not much aspiration to do anything productive for that day. I'd rather watch a marathon of Angela Anaconda than play the Hacker's Memory part of this.
Honestly, these were the best Digimon games that have come out. The Cyber Sleuth experience was MUCH more of an experience that I'd been looking for in Digimon games in the past but either had to settle or just kinda deal with what was available.
Okay so I don't think that my feelings are gonna change regardless of how much more I play, so here are my simple thoughts on the game:
Tl;dr- I recommend the game for big Digimon fans, NOT for RPG fans, this game is a terrible to navigate RPG, but a great Digimon building/collecting game.
-Great Digimon game with fun battling that you'd expect with various cool Digimon from across the spectrum
-Has some cool mods available( I'm not using any but there are some neat ones for those that want more Digis in their game)
-TERRIBLE RPG in terms of:
-major lack of quality of life pretty much everywhere
-Needless backtracking
-Tedious grinding without cheesing the game
-Dialog that could be cut in half & still accomplish the same thing in the end
-The lack of a proper full map in dungeons to refer to, the best you get is a mini map that is okay at best, & the lack of direction to help the player figure out where to go that boils down to "If you don't know where to go, go talk to an NPC that is likely a bit out of your way for help on where to go, but she won't always actually tell you where to go."
-What kind of Detective/Slueth DOESN'T keep a notepad to write these things down?!
-The ABI(Ability) system is just not good, it makes getting better Digimon & higher levels available needlessly tedious without (again) cheesing the system.
like the game because there are a lot of digimon you can go for however there are some things thats not so good... (now my points sound like it would be a bad review but i really like this game a lot for all the digimons in it also all the other digimon games for pc is way worse)
1: Remember to save if you die you can go hours back in the game because auto save is not really a thing (got send back to the last checkpoint when i died which was 3-4 hours back)
2: im really missing some Digimon like MaloMyotismon, Mummymon and Reapermon
3: the ABI system takes forever to get to the digiomn you want (need to get a rookie to champion and dow again multiple times thats like 30 levels X10 taking forever)
4: Memory slots which defines how many digimon you dcan have with you and how big they can be... it would be fine if not for need specific digimon to do various like running fast (virus rookie type) and encounters (free rookie type) and you only have 20 slots to start with (4 digimon at rookie class and you can have any champions) this is anoying cause now you need to have 2 digimon with you that does not do the fighting (unless the digimon you go for are the classes you need) and you need those 2 powers to get through the game faster which i will cover in the next point.
5: the maps are too big/or do not have enough spawnpoints or digilabs it take forever to get to one side of the map to the other since you move so slowly and there is only spawn points at the start of the zone (or a litte outside of the zone) so farming is anoying as hell also when you are done you need to go all the way back to start to digivolve (really the digilab should have been a thing you could acces at any time)
6: now you have these dungeons which farming a lot faster so maybe it would not be so bad with these large maps... if not for the fact that they are low level compared to the maps so they are not even worth it most of the time exept in the Cybersleuth, in hackers memory you get no dungeons at all for a long time and when you do as said they are really low lvl for that reason i did never finish hackers memory (did complete cybersleuth and to chapter 17 in hackers memory) cause it took too long to grind, did try again while writings this review
It is definitively one of the best digimon games but i do wish there was a workshop for mods
If there was an option to skip all cutscenes, skip all instances of dialogue whatsoever, this game would be flawless. Know that my recommendation for this came comes only on the heels of the creature battling and collecting aspect of this game. I have loved Digimon since I was 7 and I am begrudgingly wiiling to sit through this horrendous poorly written, downright lame weeaboo trash that if you want to enjoy the digimon aspect, you will have to suffer through it. and I do mean SUFFER. The dialogue is sooo bad and these segments come in abundance, consecutively, and are egregiously long. what felt like the first 20 minutes of the game I spent mindlessly spamming the A button before getting to the first actual digimon fight. And its been relentless ever since. You should only play this game if you either really love Digimon, enjoy creature battlers/collectors, or you have abhorishly bad taste and extremely low standards for what is acceptable entertainment.
If you are a big OG fan of Digimon this is an easy buy. Since first generation of Digimon I've wanted something like this and glad to have been finally able to buy it after all these years. There is even a MMO Digimon game much older but it offers what I was also looking for in a free to play MMO Digimon game (still up and running on steam).
Runs great even on my super garbage very very low end PC 60FPS decadent.
Are you a die hard digimon fan? If not, there's other games that'll scratch the JRPG/Monster Raising itch out there, that do just about everything Cyber Sleuth sets out to do and far better. While the game isn't horrendous (outside of two categories I'll mention later), its ultimately bland and fails to excel at anything it sets out to do. This may be a result of being developed for a handheld first and foremost, but just about everything it does sets it as awkward or clumsy in execution.
Story wise: Cyber Sleuth and especially Hacker's Memory continually jump over the line between wanting to be taken seriously and have adult tone and questions, to juvenile humor (most of it revolving around poop). Because it can never nail its tone or decide just what exactly what it wants to be, the stories themselves suffer. Likewise the dialogue also suffers from a fairly shoddy Japanese to English Translation. As a result of the poor translation, inconsistent tone and lack of any real characterization of the leads, its hard to care too much about what happens.
Gameplay: Playing Cyber Sleuth, if you've had any experience with Pokemon or other rpgs, will feel like an old blanket you had as a child wrapping around you. Its nostalgic, but that's a major problem. It reminds you of other, better games with deep systems and more options. Cyber Sleuth sadly has VERY little in the way of mechanical depth. It all comes down to Rock, Paper, Scissors at the start of the game, but by the end of the game, there's really only about 20 viable options out of the 336 digimon presented to you in game. (There are technically 341, but I'm not counting the NX-mons).
Sound Design: It's hit or miss. Some of the tracks are bangers that will make you go looking for the OST. Others have you reaching for the audio to turn it off completely. On another note, headphone players, DO NOT WEAR YOUR HEADPHONES WHEN YOU BOOT THE GAME. It does not save your sound settings for the start screen and it will make them bleed. Likewise, even with all audio settings at 10%, I still found the game uncomfortably loud.
Characters: Hard to care about most of them, Very one note or tropey, which isn't always a bad thing, but when its your entire cast....yeah. Also, for Gods sake, can we not put the 15 year in a Nightie for the entire game? (and for that matter, can there be more than one female member of the cast that doesn't look like a prostitute?)
Other Issues: There's no escaping this one. Cyber Sleuth is PADDED and there is next to ZERO Environmental design going on in this game. Nearly every map looks the same, made even more annoying by how often you're going to be back tracking through them. And even more, you're going to grind, and constantly grind if you want to get anywhere in the game. EXP gain is PAINFULLY BAD, unless you happen to know of one digimon and one item that gives you way more Exp. The item is locked behind RNG, that is only "Acceptable" after about the mid-point of the game. The digimon?
A literally pile of Platinum Crap. Enjoy the next 50-80 hours of not getting to use the digimon you like, because you need that EXP boost and instead being forced to watch the wiggly pile throw his own poop.
An amazing game with a memorable story and fun turn based Jrpg style combat. Plenty of Digimon to collect and evolve not to mention the requirements to evolving certain Digimon to evolve into certain forms takes some puzzling out which is fun in and of itself. At times you have to grind but that's true of pretty much every Jrpg it never feels forced or excessive. Lots of interesting side quests to do with more than a few which drew a chuckl;e or two from me. All in all a must have for Digimon fans and a wonderful game.
Completely asinine game. An onslaught of unskippable cutscenes. Might as well be a movie instead. Boss fights are ridiculously hard, and if you don't save beforehand, you lose ALL progress up to that point. The game doesn't quick save for you. Absolute trash game. Most guides ask you to sac your initial digimons and "save scum" to farm USBs. Horrendous all around.
I really love this game. And you can plau it on a steam deck with some minor tinkering. Mainly that you need to launch it in desktop first then change the display setting to not full screen. Then make a save.
Just buy this game if you have too much money to waste on. Better go play Digimon World 1-3 game which is much better.
The Digimon are fun, and the combat is interesting. But the story is not great, nothing abysmal, but nothing great either. If you like Digimon, you will like this game.
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS GAME NGL
I especially enjoyed hacker's memory a lot more than cyber sleuth because the characters in that story I enjoyed more than cyber sleuth tbh, because obvious its around Hudie but like I think I like the writing around that cast more also but even though that game is two chapter shorter it than cyber sleuth, it got the job done and pace itself well imo.
I grew up with the Digimon virtual pets and cartoons, never really played any of the console releases or PC games. What I was hoping for was a creature rearing simulator like the old virtual pets.
That really isn't what you got here, it's like one part visual novel, one part JRPG. When you get down to it this game really works more mechanically like Pokemon than the old virtual pets.
The writing is bland, for a game that focuses a lot on writing it isn't anything that really captures my attention. Information is drip fed to you through countless lines of dialog, none of it very compelling. Due to how movement in the game is structured it isn't like you can get lost or anything, so you don't have to pay a whole lot of attention to what anyone is saying.
Combat is largely chill, which is a big deal for me. I've played other Digimon games that work more like an RTS and I hate them. I just wanna grind out some XP and get stronger, this game respects that. I don't want to have to be messing with positions of my Digimon or their rows or anything like that.
The game visually is pretty mid, character walking cycles are stilted, the environments are kind of just there. I don't know if it's because I'm playing on the Steam Deck but the map allows you to zoom in or out but it does not allow you to rotate the camera which can be really annoying. I am constantly finding myself trying to rotate the damn thing.
So far the characters themselves are fairly stiff and unrelatable. Like they're there but I don't care that they are.
If you can get it on sale like I did, then go for it, no way I'd pay full price for this game though.
Great game, reminds me of Digimon 2 from the ps1. Oh it did not work at 1st, online posts said to re-install windows, I did not. I deleted the save folder content and the folder with the exe, then verified the game twice, both times it downloaded some and worked after.
I adored Cybersleuth complete on my switch, but the PC port ran horribly for me. Constant stutters in combat, dialogue, and the most basic cutscenes. Its a great game, just not on PC. I highly recommend the PS4 or Nintendo Switch release instead.
This is the third time iv purchased and played this game. first on the vita then on the switch and now on steam. STEAM DECK IS SUPPORTED! i know it says unsupported and for sure it used to be but i tried it one day and it worked. runs above 30fps 99.9% of the time on steam deck at 1440p. game devolves into almost an idle lite with visual novel stuff tacked on. thats if you do the in game exp boost mechanic with some digimon. with the extra characters they give you for the complete edition make early game a breeze.
Highly recommend this game if you want a casual monster battler that has nice colors.
Achei o game extremamente legal.
First, I want to play for steam deck seriously.
I didn't complete this game yet, But, I think this game is very fun.
Never really played much Digimon being more of a Pokemon guy. But so far I'm really enjoying it. It has a lot of evolution options and the game it is decently challenging. 10/10 recommend!
Game is okay. You can see a lot of missed opportunities there, and some mechanics are too raw, but it is still a very entertaining game. There is perhaps too much grinding for my taste, but the amount of Digimon available makes it worth if you are a fan.
The game is everything i could want in a Digimon game and it lead me into a rabbit hole of finding new and less fun digimon games lol
I got it cuz it was cheap and I was on a Digimon roll. I didn't take it seriously at first, and you need to get through hours of some tedious stuff till you get into the meat of the game. No joke, about first 6 hours is just the intro, only after that you unlock all the mechanics you'll interact with the rest of the game. It takes even longer for the story to... um... it slowly escalates. But the thing is, at certain point it clicked with me. And generally I really enjoyed this game. I got into the characters, and the story and the world, despite it being quite a bit silly. Graphics aren't too impressive sadly, and it has little cutscenes or voice over sadly. But other than that it's very cool. It's a very very classic JRPG stuff. Makes me think old Phantasy Star games. But with digimon twist and evolutions and all that. All in all it's kinda cool buying it on sale haha.
Too many unnecessary nudity ,I thought Digimon is a famous animation IP made for kids, I didn't expect those naked ladies would show up.
MC runs too slow that players will lose patience.
i liket it so much i bought twice once on my ps4 and again on my pc
Love this game, If you like Pokemon and Digimon then this is the game for you!!
If you're a Digimon fan you'll love these games, decent storyline and an endless supply of digimon to train!
At the time of writing this, I am around 50 hours into Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. I am at Chapter 20, nearing the end of Cyber Sleuth. Even after not having finished this game or started Hackers Memory, I can confidently say that I am loving this game. Other than watching a little bit of an episode of Digimon Tamers (and having someone introduce me to the god awful english intro song), this is my first exposure to Digimon, and I'm really starting to get into it. Hoping one day to finish this game, Hackers Memory, Digimon Survive and Digimon World: Next Order.
As for the game itself, it's incredibly fun. The battle system is quite simplistic at first glance but learning to effectively use Digimon types (Virus, Data, Vaccine) and special effects from items/special moves makes it very engaging. The dialogue is hilarious a lot of the time, the characters are AMAZING, I love watching them talk and interact. The story is absolutely amazing, very well written, has a lot of twists that I loved, though I will say it does feel a little stretched out at times, and definitely did not need to be 20 chapters (even if some chapters are just glorified cutscenes.)
The one bad thing I have to say about this game probably isn't even the games fault. I was starting to get into this game around the time I was travelling to another state over the holidays, so my internet access was on and off, which long story short eventually resulted in my save file in the Steam Cloud becoming corrupted. I tried a lot of things to recover it to no avail, and eventually caved, and just restarted the game. It really got me in a mood, but somehow, the game hooked me again, and I'm all in all the way until the end. The only things that remain of that save file is a habit I built up over saving on top of all 3 save files just in case, and my starter Digimon, Terriermon my beloved.
This was primarily played on Steam Deck (technically Bazzite on a Lenovo Legion Go, but I like to call it a Steam Deck because it's pretty much the same thing with Bazzite, and I'm coping because I bought it just before the Deck came out in my region :( ), and a Linux PC.
If you like RPG's with a lot grinding and many option focused on story, or you like the Digimon RPG games from the Nintendo DS I would absolutely recommend this game!
As someone who played the game when it came out on PS4, and bought it again on Switch, and AGAIN on Steam, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is the contender for the best Digimon game that Bandai Namco ever made (at least, the one that has the least caveats that must be addressed before recommending it to people)... as of this writing.
Cyber Sleuth is a game that I would strongly recommend to anyone who wishes to get into the Digimon franchise, particularly those who are longtime fans of the Pokémon games. The stats of Cyber Sleuth map closely to Generation 1 Pokémon (just with HP stats that are roughly 6-7 times that of Pokémon's, and a much simplified internal system of stat calculation).
Here are some caveats about the game.
1) The game's Audio is Japanese-only, and the English version of the script seems to be Machine Translated. While this is mostly not an issue, there are some instances of weirdness, like when characters say "ばけもん" (Bakemon, meaning "monster") and it is universally translated as "Bakemon" because that is the name of a Digimon (even in the times where in context they're clearly talking about the Eater monsters who are the main antagonistic force of the game's plot).
2) The story of the game can get very, very dark, especially compared to modern Pokémon. While this is normal for Digimon, and Cyber Sleuth is one of the lighter entries of the franchise (it doesn't hold a candle to Digimon Survive), it is rated T/PEGI-13 for a reason. I won't go into too much detail so as to not delve into spoiler territory, just be forewarned that if you are expecting the game to be like Pokémon (where dark subjects are glossed over or merely alluded to), you will be blindsided by instances of extremely dark subject matter. Tonally, the game is closer to Persona than Pokémon (though gameplay wise it's closer to Pokémon).
3) The game is extremely text-heavy and if you don't read the dialogue you will frequently get lost and not know where to go; the game does have Mission Records and characters who will remind you of where you need to go, but these measures aren't infallible. That is to say, if you don't like reading in video games, this game may not be for you.
TL;DR, if you like Monster-collecting JRPGs, this is a top-notch game. If you're a fan of Digimon and don't own this game: why haven't you bought it yet?
Honestly as a big fan of Digimon World games I can't recommend this.
Meaningless and shallow dialogs and story that I can't even imagine being interesting to kids.
Combat could be the only plus for this game.
I don't mind a lot of ginding but there has to be a better way to implement it.
2000hp in-training digimon that can fight and kill my 3 rookie's is really weird to see :)
Digiline??? Very annoying.
I saw a lot of positive reviews and comments about the game and decided to try it.
I can't agree with them.
Still wainting for decent digimon game and a decent successor to DMW 2003.
watching digimon as a kid i loved it and this game is pretty good, its a lot of talking which can take away from the more fun parts of the game but if thats your thing then you will love it. i normally hate it but in this game it is worth it.
Midgame is a slog, but story really picks up for the finale.
Having played no other digimon game this felt a lot like Shin Megami Tensei light. I don't think that either of the two games are must plays but they are interesting enough and despite their length they kept my attention. The worst part is some really uninspired side quests.
This game is Pokemon meets Megaman Battlenetwork meets FFX, with the power scales cranked up to 40k levels. Game is fun, and addictive. That being said, get it on sale. I spent 10 bucks and it's already paid for itself in fun, but I don't know if I'd enjoy it as much if I'd paid 50 bucks.
A must play for Digimon fans, it's just really good *chef kiss*. This is like Digimon World 3 and Shin Megami Tensei had a child. But despite being a masterpiece, Digimon still somehow manage to be underrated compare to Pokemon, idk maybe there's something wrong with how they do marketing or something.
s'pretty fun, and well written with lot's of humor
I'm a big fan of Digimon it was a struggle for me to get through these two, there was just so much dialogue and cut scenes every moment it was more like i was watching something rather than actually playing something, it really didn't hold my interest due to that reason, after every mission you'd have to sit there for ten minutes of cut scenes and dialogue, that's not stoppable. combat itself and the actual game-play isn't that bad.
What I spected for a Digimon game is inside this game. The only thing I would add to the game is more armor evolutions.
I lOVE the game and the soundtrack!
its two diffrent games for a really good price!!
Works on the steamdeck, just spent 2h on it without a problem. Also great game :3
i mean, its a jrpg, so if you like jrpgs and digimon, then yeah, i would recomend it
It took me a while to convince myself to sit down and play through both titles, as a die-hard Digimon fan. I committed myself to the task of obtaining and completing every game in the franchise starting this year, and finally checked this off my list despite owning it for some time now.
I really do recommend this game, IF you enjoy or can at least appreciate text-heavy games. I would not personally call this game a VN, however it can be very dialogue heavy at times and gave me that "vibe" for lack of a better wording. The cut scenes have a mix of in-game renders and animation; although I personally wished it had more animated scenes. Story was satisfactory, although I prefer Hacker's Memory to the original in terms of gameplay.
Gameplay itself is fun and has most of the common digimon tropes, with some familiar items along the way, albeit a bit repetitive or confusing at times. Hacker's Memory made some convenience improvements (walk speed in dungeons being a big one) that were greatly appreciated. I cannot recommend enough to level three PlatinumNumemon, even if they're an eyesore!
I'm terrible at reviews but my take is, even with flaws the games are fun and a great part of the Digimon franchise lineup.
I love Digimon... That's all

I had so much fun playing this game. It's a SOLID JRPG with a pretty enthralling story. The mix and match combos of mons and paths you can take for the different forms are so much fun to explore. The big downside is that it isn't compatible with the deck. A patch fixing this up for the Steam deck would make this a solid 10/10 JRPG for me. This game is a bit older than most so likelihood that would happen is slim but I guarantee a good time playing this if you are into JRPGs. If Bandai is seeing this please find a way to bring Digimon back to this style or even give us another sequel / Side story.
