Great concept and art-style, simple gameplay, cute and cool characters, and the music is so awesome! Great game!
So fashionable, let me take a pic
Ah, another photography game to fill that void. This time, a quick little game called Tokyo Snap.
Tokyo Snap is a pretty simple game. You are in Tokyo for a week and your whole goal is to raise your following on StreetSnaps. This means taking pictures of some fashionable people out on the streets of Tokyo. You only have a couple minutes to do this, and only a limited amount of photos you can take, so you need to make it count. Mostly everyone on the street you’ll be taking pictures on are not fashionable, represented by just a plain design for their model, but there are a couple of people that are. When they stop, they’ll pop in color, ready for you to take a picture no matter if they know or not. Luckily, they don’t care if you took a picture without permission, but they do have a pose if they do notice you. These guys do move about though, shifting into the plain model like everyone else, so you have to try and get your picture in before then. Or follow them until they stop again.
Once you take all of the pictures you can, you can talk to one of them before going to pick your best three pictures to upload. Though, running out of time means not being able to talk to one of them (heads up to anyone doing the achievement for talking to one person all seven days and doing the achievement for running out of time on the last day). Every character does have a quick little story, but you do have to talk to them everyday to see through to the end. You will get likes and followers as long as you take a picture, where they’re the vocal point, of one of the characters. And after that, the next day rolls around and you do this all over.
Though, as the days go, you do get opportunists to get more likes. This does seem to be gated by your follower count in some way, but you will get messages that will unlock more aspects for you. Mainly, this is a way for you to get more likes, like knowing what the fashion trends are for that day and having eye contact. There are some that do help you out when taking pictures, like raising how many you can take or getting an easy way to get eye contact. I did find two of these upgrades iffy, like getting an interesting enough background is a bit hard and there is a camera upgrade for when you’re close but I couldn’t tell if there was a difference.
Aside from this, I did wish the characters had a few different outfits so they’re not wearing the same thing for a week.
Verdict
For what it is, this is a good, short game to play if you have an hour to kill.

[b] A beautifully designed game, but sadly very short. [b]
In my opinion, Tokyo Snap's best feature is its art style, and it is very visually pleasing! There's one main problem with the game though, and it's that it is very short, and so the replayabilty is not very good. I would love it if the developers added more content or DLC to the game, but other than that, it's a very beautiful game.

Very short, but fun. Would love to see the concept here expanded with more outfits/poses/etc!
I suppose as a photography game it may be fun, tho it lacks real challenge in it. I was getting 1000 likes right off the bat without much effort. The visual novel aspect is very weak, there's not much in it at all. The character's individual stories aren't very compelling and I played through mostly for achievement completion, not by any drive to see the character stories play out. It may be fun for less than three euros for the picture section though.
A sweet little game about fashion and photography.
There's not a whole lot to do, but it's simple premise and game play style is refreshing.
It's a pretty good concept. It would be nice to have more variety for fashion or trends or background. Overall, I think the elements of the game are very put together. I also like how every color pops.
This game was so quirky and fun. As a photographer its pretty spot on. THe references to iconic people are hilarious. Especially the rock one. Still a little confused how we were shooting film with a digital camera...But that has nothing to do with the fun had. Also i think sayana was into me, Just Saying.
Such a nice little game that makes you feel good for an hourt or so, even characters are surprisingly fun. IT's a shame though it doesn't seem to have New Game+. Sad to see that there are less than 10 reviews on Steam by the time I'm reviewing it.
Simple but fun gameplay, sadly a very short experience.
Photography in games is something I enjoy. I liked the idea, but I found it short and a bit limiting. The characters and setting are the same for the entire in-game week. Would be neutral if I could.
What a charming little game. I picked this up on a whim after I saw it was a pokemon snap styled photography game. There just isn't enough of these. And $5 is pretty cheap. A single playthrough takes about 30 minutes, and the story is broken up into several days. There's only a single map (unlike pokemon snap where there's several different areas) and the map itself is quite small (just a single street) so it's easy to see everything in just a minute or two.
The target of your photography, should you choose to follow the objective, are a handful of different harajuku street fashion models. The game is very easy: just line up the person in the shot and take a photo. And later on you need to wait for a pose they'll do after a short period of time. And perhaps take pics with an interesting background (a literal background, not other characters like I had thought). The characters only have a single outfit and one pose, and they move around in the crowd going from point to point. When they stop and become colorful, then you take a pic. Otherwise they just blend into the crowd and don't count.
After each day you can go up to one of the characters and chat with them, learning a bit about who they are, how they feel, etc. You can choose whether to talk to the same person each day, learning more and more about them, or talk to different people and learn more about them. You can only talk to one person each day, and the game lasts 7 days, giving you 7 chances to talk to them. It's impossible to talk to everyone that many times before the game is up, so there's definitely replayability. The days are about 3 minutes in length each, but end sooner if you use up your shots. No dialogue trees or anything like that.
At the end of each day you go into a professor-oak style "select your best photos" area, where you choose three photos you want to "upload" onto social media (fictional) and you get scored on each photo. Very pokemon snap esque. They grade on how much the character takes up in the shot, whether or not there's a background or plain wall, whether they're wearing the right clothes (there's three trending clothing items each day), and whether they posed. Each photo gets "likes" and you get "followers" depending on how well you did. This works as a high score but doesn't seem to change much. Unlike pokemon snap, it's *NOT* on rails. You're free to move around as you please anywhere on the street. But in practice you'll end up stalking the people you wanna take photos of haha.
The game is pretty fun but very short. Not something I'd recommend unless you're really craving more pokemon snap style gameplay, and love stories where it's just learning about the characters. The map is small, story is short, very indie. But I love it all. The characters, the dialogue, the story, the location, the art style, the gameplay. It's a very charming game, even if it's not one that'll have you coming back day after day. It's a nice taste into a genre that honestly should be a lot more common and popular than it actually is.
If you love harajuku street fashion, photography, or pokemon snap, definitely get this game. I know I'll definitely be playing through all of the characters stories.
Loved this.. they really need to add more people to photograph.. mabye more maps.. i was aible to beat this very quickly and i wish there was much more to do.
Recently I have gotten the full version of this game but for some reason every single time i try and play, I can't move my camera. It's just stuck in one position.
Does anyone know how I can solve this?
great small game about 30 min to finish but very replayable and the camera works very well and it's simple to use. ^^ the art is very well done and the only problem i had was some AI got stuck on things. if at the end you take all the pictures for the day you get the story part in a way you can talk to each person you take pictures of and find out their story. it's good if you want a short replayable game with a cute story and art. i would hope they add maybe dlc or something so you can go to new places and meet new people cuz the concept of the game is super good. i wish it wasn't hidden in all the trash steam has but it was a gem to find and more people should get it. 10/10 ^^
Amazingly simple yet fun game! Cleared Risako's story and can't wait to play the other ones! Besides what that other reviewer said, the only other thing I think this game needs is some sort of leaderboard for most followers and most likes. Doesn't even have to be online, just a personal scoreboard would be nice.
Besides that, this is a really awesome game that's a mix of Pokemon Snap, Papers Please, and visual novels. You start out with the basics, and as the week goes on, it adds new rules and upgrades that enhance/complicate the gameplay (in a good way) such as adding more people to get in your way, adding more memory and other upgrades to the camera, and setting up new rules that can increase your social media presence!
I will definitely follow this developer because they seem to make pretty awesome and chill games!
