Imperator: Rome

Imperator: Rome?

Imperator: Rome:

  • Набор Hellenistic World Flavor Pack.

This game deserves to be taken back into development. It still is the best pop-based Paradox game, and the series (and I) need a version of the real time strategy game placed in this timeframe. The game is playable and enjoyable as it is, but Paradox should work on more content in stead of abandoning it.

The most boring, infuriating and repetitive game I have ever played, I have hundreds of hours logged in other paradox strategy games like CK3, EU4, HOI4, and VIC3 however this one is much worst than the others, possibly in every way , the combat is ok and waging wars and conquering is simple and easy, until a civil war erupts, which happens very often : unless you are constantly ensuring the loyalty of your governers and provinces. Constant civil wars and independence wars prevent me from actually expanding. you will have to constantly be bribing and making friends with different characters, the character system is absolute garbage and filled with randomness, Often you cant even control your own army because your leaders are disloyal. gameplay is basically conquer some land, deal with civil wars, deal with independence wars, repeat. its also very annoying having to constantly micromanange trade and keeping pops happy. The map is nice looking and its fun to build roads and ancient cities at least.

For so long this game sat in my library gathering dust, This was due to so many negative reviews. Foolishly i believed all the negativity and never gave it a chance..

After 2 years of 0 hours playtime.. im 10 hours into a campaign and fully hooked :) Imperator Rome combines other paradox titles features and mechanics into one game and its works. Very addicting and highly recommend

There is very little depth to the game, whether you build buildings or not doesn't really matter, there's no real other way of improving your holdings so the game is very much conquering with none of the complexity a game like EU4 has, the politics are mainly just annoying and technology is so unimpactful they could have left it out and the game would remain the exact same.

I think this may be the most satisfying paradox game for playing tall. I like to play tall and I like this period of history.

This game is so close to being good. IMO, there are two big issues with this game.

Firstly, playing tall is possible, but playing wide is really the only way to play this game, which is disappointing because there is a lot of potential for microing the tall aspect of a nation. It kind of makes the game boring an one dimensional. Playing wide isn't hard either. Once you have the military you just steam roll and paint the map. AE isn't a problem at all and is easily managed.

Secondly, micro is enjoyable in this game, but your work is constantly undone. Trade deals expire constantly and you spend way too much time repeatedly reclicking deals that were cancelled. The AI is terrible at automating this. You set up policies for provinces with your govenors which are constantly changed as govenors die and are swapped. You can set up slave ratios in cities to get extra goods, but these cannot be held static. It is just a never ending battle of fighting the game to keep your nation set up the way you want. Instead you should be able to set goals for the provinces and territories to work towards or set penalties for holding a province in a state that is unbalanced that the game wants to move away from.

Thirdly, asides from the afore mentioned micro problems, the entire trade situation should be redone. It is boring an one dimensional. It would be better if provinces generated a good and those entered a market and sold based on demand. Then you can allocate a percentage of a provinces income to import goods from the open market. A goods price can then be dependent on its distance and demand. Food should be the most important trade good, but it often is the good that is most available in the world and easiest to get domestically. Armies have food bars, but it never is really a problem. Armies should have to import food just like provinces do and pay the same costs. Further from food producing areas and it gets harder. This could also add depth to the military as armies would have supply lines that could be cut off.

It is just so frustrating because there is a lot of good in this game, but the unfun parts take too much away to really enjoy this game. I feel just feel frustrated playing it.

An ostensibly underrated game whose only observable drawback is being the product of a company that routinely releases map painter RTS games. Or more precisely routinely releases DLC for the same 3 games. (EU4s launch date was 2013 my dudes).

Imperator Rome is great. You really do feel like you're controlling an antiquity era Empire. Republics have civil wars, monarchies have usurpers, migratory Germanic tribes can.... migrate. Egypt, Carthage, India (Muarya), Persia, Thrace, and of course Rome are all presented with a fair degree of uniqueness and character.

While there's map painting there's also character interactions with generals, senators, leaders etc. You can ransom captured generals back to their countries for money or you can make them fight to the death in gladiatorial arenas. You can bribe people to ensure loyalty and you can appoint governors and imprison / kill / assassinate disloyal characters etc. Comparatively it's a good balance between the character focus of the Crusader Kings games and the nation building aspect of EU4. It does feel like a unique experience in that regard.

Wars are straight forward but include AI options for your armies. You can tell your armies what they should be doing in times of war and if it's a major campaign or you're fighting a civil war, it's helpful. You can also micro-manage. Your military is a combination of standing armies (mercenaries and legions) and Levies that you call up in times of serious conflicts. These armies are made up of smaller units that contain unit diversities and different cultures prioritize different army compositions. But you as a player can design whatever army you want. This is important should you wish to challenge Rome. The Rome units and research paths are mostly heavy infantry and heavy cavalry, this is rare for the time period as most other contemporaries are investing in light cavalry and archers…. This means most AI comes up lacking when the Roman juggernaut pulls up.

ROME, the entire reason you’re contemplating this game (unless you’re weird like me and thought ancient india was more interesting). ROME:™ starts off as its historic republic in central Italy and expands outward until holding most of Europe. If you as the player want to play as Rome that's definitely where most of the game's flavor lies. You justify claims and expand outward rapidly until facing your first real threat, Carthage or beta-Gaul (sometimes one of the french or germanic tribes subjugates the rest and that means there’s a large European empire to deal with after you unify Italy). After you take on Carthage or beta Gaul you snowball until you fight whatever empire rose out of Persia / Egypt. After that you just fight civil wars until you decide you want Britannia or India.

The economy is intricate enough, nothing fancy just imports and exports with a fair degree of automation. (But you can import Camels and Elephants to create Elephant and Camel units which is cool). Taxes / expenses come in different selections you can manually increase or decrease etc, basic paradox map painter stuff.

Multiplayer is also functional, I tested it with a friend for around three hours, no issues. Connectivity was fine.

Alright time to address the elephant in the room, is it “Bare Bones?” No, it really isn’t. You have to be spoiled by EU4 and shocked that a decade old game with a DLC released every 4 months has “more content” to feel this way. What this game is, is an honest attempt at an antiquity era map painter RTS that is completed. Look around, look at those DLCs for Imperator Rome, all 5 of them (one being free, one being a soundtrack and three being greek ‘flavor’ packs for skins and greek related missions. This game had its development cut prematurely and is better off for it. For $40 you get a complete and functional base game, no dlc wishlists, no subscription, you just get to own this solid game.

The games has community support and many new / constantly updated community mods and what remains of the original paradox team has said they are happy mods have brought life back to Imperator.

A solid 82/100

It was a struggle to play at first. However, after trying to understand the game better and putting time into it, it definitely becomes more enjoyable and I am having much more fun with it at the moment. Some parts of the game are a bit shallow and certain parts (especially with aspects like loyalty of characters and provinces) can just be downright frustrating. Despite that, the map is stunning, probably my favourite out of all Paradox games and the mechanics of conquest and economy are incredibly satisfying. Would I buy at full price? Probably not. On a sale? Sure, give it a try. Don't bother playing without Invictus mod, it really adds that vital flavour to the game. It's a real shame this game feels basically abandoned considering how much potential it has. After all, "Rome wasn't built in a day".

TLDR not worth it for even $10
Lots of traditional Paradox style busy work with a Roman overlay.
Peace is a boring tedious grind
Wars are a completion bar filling up
Game play loop is unsatisfying

Gives you the option to have a Rome where women have all the rights of men. I bring this up because adding this worthless alternate reality option no one wants means other options could not be implemented. It should have been left to modders, but no, the devs considered this a critical feature.

Total War Rome II and Rome Total War both did Rome better with the original being the more fun of the two.

This game in my opinion is great. I like what it has setup as the core of its game.

My biggest issue with it is that its very... deterministic. This might just be a skill issue on my end. But Rome will always be dominant in every game you play. Sure this may be historical but there are very few catch up mechanics in game. Once you are behind you are always behind. It is very much a game of snowballing.

! THIS GAME DOES NOT GET UPDATES ! and the moding comunity it not too large
but i find the game very fun and the systems in it are very complex (in a fun to learn and use way)
i highly suggest the game to anny one that likes grand strategy games and paradox games
but i found a lack in content in some countries . ( mod imperator invictus fixes all of that )
TIP:
if you are having problems with stabilyty the taking a divine sacrifice (religion tab at the top) it gives you +0,15 sabilyty per month for 50 influence
if you have high agresive expansion there is a button ( under devine secrifice button) that increases
tyrany , and high tyrany makes you loose more agresive expansion BUT it lowers loyalty of important carachters

absolutely have an addiction to this game, i gave it three shots until a friend helped me comprehend this game that i initially had little will to play but enough curiosity to try
similar to victoria 2 i find myself getting immersed in the light role play that many paradox games dont itch for me, i think simply its bones and loop are fun and solid which is eu4s standout for me and having that victoria 2 immersion and authentic feel of your civilization growing and changing over time instead of feeling like a constant war machine like in eu4 and hoi4 this games tapping a middleground between eu and vic and i love it.
play invictus, get the vassal to overlord vassal change and its 10/10

This game started rough, very rough, and Paradox Interactive is mostly to blame, along with those critics who posted "rage reviews" (they were somewhat fair but ultimately counterproductive) and helped to undermine sales and thus kill the game's development. However, the final updates and the mods (Invictus in particular) have transformed this into a solid game. Unlike some other Paradox games, this one has a positive feel to it. There is always some achievement down the road that feels good, even as it holds the player back with appropriate "punishment" (food, aggressive expansion, integration, happiness, etc.) if they expand too far too fast. The systems work well, and it genuinely feels good to play.

Paradox can't be blamed for abandoning a game that doesn't sell, even if the lack of sales is largely their fault, however it may be worth the financial risk of attempting a "relaunch" using an appropriate dlc that incorporates some of the modders improvements with some of Paradox's own ideas (any such relaunch dlc will need to extend the timeline to provide the "grand strategy" marketing necessary to justify a legitimate relaunch. The triumvirates are "ripe" for the picking). My guess is that if it's handled properly, it will succeed. They have the time period, the mechanics, the exceptionally nice map, and very positive recent customer reviews. The only question is can they draw in more purchasers who will actually play the game and justify the attempted resurrection?

Obviously, no company wants to throw "good money after bad" and it does make sense to just accept the "sunk cost" of a failed venture and chalk it up to the cost of doing business. But on the other hand, comparing the cost of relaunching a game that has such potential at this point to that of developing a new title from scratch seems to be worth the risk. A grand strategy gamming company can't do any better than the Roman time period, and this game has so much dlc possibilities that it must be tempting for them to consider. In any event, it's a very good game and an exceptional bargain when it's on sale, especially given the free mods.

You have to spend several hours watching tutorial videos to understand what's going on. I think it's worth it. I still have EU:Rome with Vae Victis, and this is obviously the descendant in the EU4 era. Sometimes I'd prefer the simplicity(!) of EU:Rome, but I'm having a great time finally getting out there and conquering the Samnites.

I am not going to touch this game before they remove/update this shitty mechanic of civil war. Am i supposed to micro control and hunt small units that ignore fortresses(this is the main point of building) and capture the sh*t out of my territory? And why I am not allowed to call my allies and another side of civil war can? I have to use some abuse mechanics like attack allies of their allies so my allies can start fighting? An what is the point of war exhaustion if it is not applied to bots?
I cannot believe that I prepurchased this trash 5 years ago. When it was super bad on release I decided to wait for patches that will fix it. They did not. The game is deader than dead.

It's good, but I also got it plus DLC on sale for 25 dollars which I feel is a more fair price than full. The game-play loop is pretty fun, but the game feels a little small. I know it's a euro-centric game based around Rome but having access to the rest of the world would be nice. There isn't a whole lot to do though other than map painting it seems, but it's not a bad experience. Maybe it's a little boring later on? Especially if you don't fully grasp the mechanics like me, but I had fun with the missions trees and the decisions. I formed Hibernia and Albion which was enjoyable. But then the missions, and decisions just stopped after a bit and there was so much game-time left. Not a bad game at all just kind of a little shallow at first glance.

I was on the fence to buy it or not, but as you can see i decided to buy it, and what fun in these 4 hours have i had with the game, in eu4 the biggest thing is war, and the game is centered around waging war, hoi4 is centered on military planing and construction of perfect armies that can deafet any force put up aigainst them, Vic 3 is the playing tall game and the economy builder, CK3 is the game about characters, dynasties building their stories in history, but Imperator is what i like to call "Multivitamin" as it has everything preveusly mentioned and most of all it is set in antiquity.Truly if you like PDX games buy Imperator, if we unite and get a massive player base PDX might revive Imperator.....

I have only played with the Invictus mod. The game just works, is quite simple, and has some things to it, but is not the best paradox game. Very much a map painter that turns into a rapid popup clicker once you snowball far enough, to the point that you accidentally accept peace deals you don't want. Popups can be adjusted to some extent, but given enough provinces there's a lot of turn-over and you need to pick governors with some thought. Some automation of unit behavior makes larger or multiple front warfare bearable. Not too good, but not bad either. OK game.

Do you like historical strategy games? Then you should definetively try Imperator Rome. I am a dedicated historical strategy gamer and began with Universalis II some 20 years ago, Paradox and Total War games are the ones I've played the most and also a bunch of TW mods. Imperator Rome (IR) is perhaps the ultimate strategy game for the time period of antiquity. If you don't want to fight out the battles that is. If you enjoy the battlefield I strongly recommend Ancient Empires for Attila TW. An absolutely genius mod.

Being more or less done with EU IV, Victora II, HOI IV and CK III I wanted to give IR a chance. It's a bit complicated to get into but with help from the in game tutorials and not least the excellent YT videos from @Konglomerat you will learn the game. Some minor changes in the left hand side menu would have simpliefied things but one gets used to it. The battle system is deeper and more realistic than for for instance EU4, and thus even more exciting.

I'm playing both a Carthage, Macedonia and Pontus game in parallell. All with the Invicturs mod which I strongly recommend. Great fun and great AI opponents. IR has its own unique touch and feel, and it gets more an more fun the more one understand of everything. After 100 hours I guess 70-80% is understood. I like to "uncover" a game layer by layer. Replayability is built in by the geography of Europe, North Africa and the Near East, and you can play Ironman mode and otherwise adjust the difficulty. I have no problem recommending this game and it really deserves a try in my opinion.

This game is very fun. I only wish it had a more visual appeal that was representative of ancient battles. Super fun if you love a laid back game that becomes more and more intuitive the more you play.

Sure, Paradox stopped support too early. Sure, the tech tree is a mess. Sure, there's lots of depth that could have been added.

But nothing else comes close to feeling like you're running a polity in antiquity. This game is amazing for what it does right.

Even after years of neglect, official updates come around from time to time now, and modders have picked up the torch. If you play this game with mods (particularly Invictus, Indomita and the plethora of submods) its a damn good experience.

Good game from one of the most interesting eras in human history. It is a shame that not enough people are playing it and Paradox isn´t continuing with development. Few dlcs in Paradox style would probably unlock all its potential...

It's fine, for a Rome game. It'll scratch an itch, but not for long. It's not Paradox's best, and it's not their worst. They abandoned it, so it's kind of empty, boring, and repetitive. High learning curve, and if you don't snowball early enough, then it's literally impossible to push later game empires as they blob and ally with each other.

I'm one of those numpties that buys Paradox games as soon as they come out. I was one of many who really hated everything about this game.

Rejoice, it might have taken them a bit longer, but they fixed it. I believe it is no longer supported, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get it and enjoy it.
