Wish there were more games like it, cool idea, cool concept. Its alright, get it on sale :)
Just another arcade game, which lack variety of scenarios and has no goal. After an hour of gameplay you learn some basics, then you see the same repetitive quests, earn money and basically there's nothing new anymore.
You buy telescopes, you select stars, you research them you rotate 3 disks while talking in conferences.
And you try to make some money to buy more telescopes... not sure how.
+ the idea of the game is good
+ the music fits the theme
- the first hour can be boring even if your secret dream was to become an astronomer. There is not much complexity in the game but still I got bankrupt during my first attempt, probably because I started with the worst possible telescope :)
If you want to support extreme niche games, buy this on sale.
If you like clicker games, you might like this game.
Basically a clicker game, with all the complexity and quality you would expect from that. NOT worth $20. I paid $3 and still feel like I was ripped off. I seriously question the legitimacy of the other reviews, especially those saying it's a good game for the price. There are hundreds of free web games with similar concepts and better design; nobody should waste their money on this.
Starting off, the sound is horrendous. The game sounds were nothing but bass and clicks. Turning off the sound didn't actually turn off all of the sound for some reason.
The tutorial is not very well explained and consists of pages of information with a screen full of various topics as reference. It's good to have the reference, but the tutorial makes me want to play the game less.
Im torn, wanting to like it and hate it at same time. I think needs more of a tutorial on the dynamics. ALso VERY repetitive, ALso one of the notes is way off. Says "dont be afraid to spend all your money here" well done that and ended up failing across the board miserably. That said its not Bad, its middle of the road, For the price i cant complain an would recommend on a sale basis. Kinda feels like it was only halfway to 3/4 done seems to be missing something i just cant put my finger on it. Oh ya repetive, repetitive, repetitive, needs something to break up the monotony.
games 100% does not feel like it should be worth anymore then $1, its low graphics, repetitive, and your just clicking on the same sort of stuf over and over, yeah theres minigames but they are easy as hell and no point to them and slow ass progression that makes u feel like your dying inside just to get a new telescope or a upgrade, 10/10 want a refund asap
Interesting idea, simple but smooth implementation. Minor bugs, nothing grounbreaking. Basically, it is simple management game, coupled with few minigames - and you can learn a bit about astronomy. Relaxed pace and difficulty, not much replayability after you understand the things. For the price very adequate, I enjoyed my 15 hours. Thumbs up.
The UI is very rough and basic, but behind it hides a good game. It keeps you enganged with new unlocks and good balance between passive and active incomes and minigames.
Really worth the price, you'll enjoy a good 10 hours of gameplay, if not more. The dev has done a great job.
In the cons, I feel that the last part of the game might have been longer and that the space Hubble telescope is underused. It's a bit frustrating to realize the huge end game telescope is more a goal than an actual useful feature. There is another frustrating part: the question asked by journalists. Some of them are wrong or inaccurate (asking for a temperature without telling which unit is expected: Kelvin, Celsius, Fahrenheit etc.).
The pros now. It's rewarding to have your researchs resulting in breakthrough or Nobel Prize (even if it feels a bit out of luck). The game is smooth: no crash, no loading screens, no bugs. The artworks are well done and you'll learn a lot about stars in general. It's educative without being boring.
All in all, it's a nice niche game, with an uncommon everything (gameplay, topic, design). I recommend it, especially considering the price (if it's on sale and that you're into astronomy, don't even hesitate for a second).
I immagine that for this price is a DECENT game, so a 6.5 on 10 for me, but still enjoyable, just... a bit disappointing.
But, FIRST, I say this is an ok game for the price.
BUT, I also think that a game so 'different' from others (astronomy...) could have been more... more content, more quality with the grapich compartment... and so more money for the devs!
I don't think it's having a great success, frankly, and this make me feel bad... and at the some time it's cleraly lacking the quality to pretend to earn much more!
But, maybe try it, or wait for a sale, and it could be honestly amusing and with some interesting deep mechanics.
Realy cool game for the price! I didn´t think I would enjoy it but decided to try and was super surprised, it took me back to that feeling I had as a kid playing Tycoon games where I just wanted to get that "one upgrade" that turned into me playing another 3 hours to get the next 10 upgrades instead...
i love this game, but it is short.
it feels like 2/3 of a game. the hubble telescope at the end seemed like the beginning of the last arc of the game, but instead it broke the game and made the game systems boring, tedious and incorrectly responsive (ex. the tips at the end of the observation say poor you, there were too many cloudy days... my telescope is in SPACE). There are all these great setups for a good third arc, but it just plods on.
the fact that the beginning and middle of the game are tycoon management gold is why this bugs me so much
i finished the game in 8 hours and paid $10 so i feel like i got my money worth, but there is so much good game here for the end to just peter off made me feel unfulfilled
Overall AstronTycoon is a unique and interesting experience. If you're sick of playing standard games of any type this is a breath of fresh air for a reasonable price. Whilst lacking replayability, it is an enjoyable journey of discovery as you work towards finding the first habital planet outside our solar system.
Pros:
- Authentic telescope technology, star information and general sciencentific approach to mapping the sky
- Fun searching the sky for that 'right star' in search of a habital planet
- Nice visuals of various interstellar objects
Cons:
- Lacks replayability
- Minigames get somewhat boring after a while
- Tech-tree is a little clunky and could have some clearer visual pathways (more like a wire diagram)
Opportunities (maybe do the 'right mix' of these rather than all):
- Create a way of minigames being removed at some point later in the game
- Campaign mode with more specific objectives along the way (or a turbo mode after first run through)
- Character traits and enhancement other than just researching different 'stuff'
- Ability to upgrade other facilities other than the telescope itself
- Ability to hire and fires staff (could be a great way of reducing the need to do minigames)
Score: 7.5/10
WOW.... What a wonderful gem of a game. If you are hesitant about a game developer being able to translate the subject of Astronomy to a game, then don't be. Although obviously, the game developer had to simplify some of the game concepts for clarity, the ability to make this game so immersive is astounding to me. Plus, you will get a sense of the field of Astronomy by just playing the game. Don't be like me and become hesitant about buying this game just because you don't think that it will come through with the translation of science to gaming. The game will speak for itself. And you will enjoy it while at the same time becoming addicted to it's presentation and the concentration required in gameplay. I have trouble putting it down. It's beautiful.
The only thing that I would like to know is what background that the game developer has since with just a little bit of Astronomy, I can see how he has captured the field of Astronomy and made it accessible to us.
Recommendation. Buy, Buy, Buy. You won't regret it.
Bought the game 7 hours ago and just stopped playing 3 AM on a workday.
I jutst found my first habitable planet and won novel price ;)
Many more good hours to come in a fun tycoongame there make you forget about time.
Enjoying it, very early in. Relaxing casual pace.
Build a scope, scan stars. Simple minigames to improve your results and the succeeding cash rewards to then upgrade telescopes and research tree, and expand the results you will get from future stars.
Dev is responsive to comments, which is always encouraging.
All I've got so far until advancing farther, see a lot in screenshots I haven't gotten to.
