The run outs are a joke, you get at least three a match, like the idea of the game but it needs improving in the future series, run outs has been a problem for a while.
Same old same old. AI can bowl you out no matter what you do but you can't get a wicket when you bowl. Just when the AI needs a collapse a collapse happens no matter the levels you put, you can put defensive and defensive rated batsmen will still get run out in a test match. This seems to be a consistant complaint throughout the years. I thing a better application of the difficultly options is in order. What I described was all on easy difficulty so I think easy should be for casual players so they can get enjoyment without having to micro manage, then normal and hard is micromanaging every ball for the hardcore players. I want to like this game but so many times the enjoyment is ruined by the AI getting 4/650 super easily and I end up having to follow on. I understand it's tough for a small developer but in contrast I play sim racing titles by small developers who give constant updates to improve the games they release. I will consider this game once it goes from mixed reviews to at least positive reviews because the standard is still Cricket Coach 2014 which is sad for such a big game like cricket.
Losing a T20i by 72 runs with 8 wickets in hand, despite telling every single batsman to take risks and score at the maximum rate they can the entire match?
Sure, I can believe that. They're taking so many risks that they're scoring at a massive 6 an over and not losing their wickets.
It's literally impossible to win when the game's that unrealistic.
Addictive game. Easy to play. Some aspects needed updating 10+ years ago.
This would be perfect with some basic changes:
1) Finances. Playing as a county, your budget for new players resets every year. So if you win the treble one season, and want to hold back some of the prize money for new signings in future, you can't. You have to spend it or lose it. Utter rubbish.
2) Player training / attributes. This is useless. You can't see how training improves a player's skills. In fact a player's skills aren't even visible. Championship Manager 1993 is far more advanced.
3) Loan signings / contract negotiations. You can't sign a player on short term loan. You can't approach a player who's contract is expiring. You can't pay another club for a player. You can't offer a contract longer than 3 years. You can't negotiate anything below the amount a player demands. A player doesn't demand a higher wage for a shorter contract - it's exactly the same annual salary regardless of contract length. You can't sign more than 3 players per 'round' of negotiations. Awful. So basic it could've been made in the 1980s.
4) Free hits. Players don't necessarily attack when they get a free hit. If you've set up to play below ~6 bars attacking as a batsman, you'll often see a player defend a free hit! Dumb programming.
5) Overseas players unavailable. You might shell out £120,000 for a star overseas player. Without warning they might be missing for half your season. You still pay their full salary, whether they're available 40% or 100% of the time.
6) Player editor. I might be wrong, so please bear with me. I seem to recall in the older games, in the early 2000s, you could change a player's name etc. It was quite fun to change a county to your club team. I don't see where that can be done in this version.
7) Connection to Steam. In the past I've bought a CD or DVD and just played the game. Now if my internet's down I can't play. It seems you stupidly have to be logged into Steam to play the game you've paid for. This is shocking. Surely everyone will try to get a cracked/pirated version instead. It's like the old days of buying music on Itunes.
Other than that, it's a decent game. Wish the developers had someone with half a cricket brain. Any club player - there are hundreds of thousands of us - could improve the game enormously. I'm sure people would help for free. Please just try, developers. Try. Make an effort.
I love cricket. I've played it for years, I've umpired it for years, and I've followed it my whole life. This is a game created by people who do not understand cricket. Sensible cricket tactics don't work. Batsmen somehow play impossible shots. In my first match I had a team chase down 400 for the loss of only 4 wickets on a last day pitch that supposedly had uneven bounce and sharp turn. Seriously, if you know anything about cricket you would know that would be the GREATEST RESULT IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME. Clearly, the developers know nothing. The game is a joke.
I have played many Cricket Manager games and this game is probably the worst of all the games I've played. The Match Engine is so bad, you always end up losing no matter what your strategies are. Total waste of Money and Time.
I keep coming back to it because I want it to be good, but ultimately its let down by two key points:
1. There's no player stats to guide you in who to select, who to give contracts to etc. Any old eleven players will do.
2. T20 is a joke. I cannot believe that the devs have done nothing to fix this farce.
Sadly, there's just not enough going for this game it to recommend it.
Aweful. Ive spent hours trying to figure out how to improve but this game makes absolutly random decision that ruin the game. The is no training to teach you how to play the game and even with a fairly decent knowledge of the game it throws it back in your face not allowing you to have any fun. Unless this game gets a major update and a complete rehaul to team progression and adding the ability to actully know how to win a match only then I would think about recomending this game. Definitely dont pay 25 NZD for this game. The sad thing is i actually wanted to like it, but instead it continues the tread of aweful cricket games. 2/10.
There hasn't been any progression on previous game. Database and stats are great but that's where this game ends Scripting is terrible. How can a team get 500 in first inns then be bowled out for 80 in the second. Youth players non existant regardless of how much or little you budget. Players being selected for internationals when they're in their mid-late 30's proving that no new players are any good. Would it have been too much to ask for a database editor even if it was an addon like football manager
Very good game if you are experienced with cricket tactics but you need to use players with good stats and not just your faviourites to succeed.
even though i have ticked this game to recommend i havent found it easy to play (i am enjoying playing the game though ) i have won 1 game out of 4 and the last 2 games i have lost by 1 innings and at least 200 runs (i am playing as Derbyshire though), so that is probably a reason i am not doing very well at the moment, i will keep trying and hopefully do better
I've only played T20 and found the key differance between being all out for <100 in 12 overs and finishing 20 overs at 200+ with wickets left is utterly random luck as both results can be obtained starting from the same save and making the same selections.
So either my choices are meanigless or making the right choices can still lead to utter failure, either way the result is out of my hands.
Cricket Spectator would be more accurate title .
Since august 2018 with the one of the two updates that month. Cricket Captain has been constantly freezing or in other words not responding after I select the to play the next match or select to bat and bowl after the toss.
I want this issue fixed quickly it is impariring my enjoyment. Bring out another update to clear these bugs for good. Two updates ago is when this issue started for me
I'm sorry, I really wanted to like this game but ultimately it is repetitive and unrewarding.
Nothing about the game is atrocious, but nothing is exceptional either and the sum total is a bit limp. To try to be constructive, Easy mode should be easy, not really hard. I appreciate that real life can throw up unusual results but I just became sick and tired of draws and loses to manifestly inferior opposition. I think I noticed a mild improvement in performance by playing ball-by-ball and mixing up the play. If so, this is a mistake. The casual player doesn't want to pour hours into a single match. Likewise, I was irritated by the warning that skipping a game would result in loss in performance. What's the point of that? To punish me for being insufficiently enthusiastic and for not playing it the way it 'should' be played? I'm the customer, get over yourselves.
I realise it is a compromise in the balance between playability and realism, but stats for players along the lines of Football Manager would be an improvement. You develop an emotional investment in young players you've nurtured, you can make informed decisions regarding transfers and more easily analyse the opposition.
The user interface isn't confusing, but it's not that friendly either. I too often tried to pick a player who was 20-overs-only or the reserve foreign player.
The notion of coaching a set number of players seems odd. Surely professional players all train, all the time? The rewards for training are opaque (because you have no stats!). The idea of representing form as five stars seems imprecise, especially with all-rounders when I wasn't clear whether it represented one discipline or both.
The commentary is very good, there's a good range of phrases and comments such that it doesn't grate and become overly repetitious.
I enjoyed the option to pick an all-star team and replay some classic tests, but taken in the round it's not enough to recommend the game. It feels like some very dedicated people have put a lot into this (which is a rare thing in itself), but I hope they'll forgive me in saying that as ardent fans they are perhaps a bit too close to the detail and they've made the game a bit boring.
Update 18th August.
----------------------------
The developer fixed my main issue. The picking of too many players from the players team for international duty. In particular those with little FC experience.
From having half my team of rookies suddenly plucked for England I now have just one. I'm guessing the game "knows" he is a lot better than his stats. A Vaughan or Trescothick pick if you like. Fair enough.
The T Francis player was actually the player given to my team to try out mid-season. He was rubbish and I had to play him. At least until my two injuries recovered. It meant having 5 specialist bowlers and 2 bowling allrounders in the team. But I suppose this might happen IRL.
I've changed my review to positive as a result of this. It was borderline, this pushed it the other side of the wire.
I'd still like more personalisation and customisation.
Wouldn't we all?
Getting emotionally invested in individual players. Not just renaming of regens but giving them personality. Images of them would play a large part in this.
Is reverse swing part of the game (it seems it might be, but it's not explicit in any part of the game - you watch and have no idea whether it is the case or he's just started bowling inswing.
In general bowers getting better at specific deliveries and adding new ones.
Watching the T20 and test series on Sky now and it's a hot topic. What new deliveries is this bowler working on?
Good to see fielding acknowledged as part of the game. The editor needs to know who fields where. I'd like to have the same fielder in the covers every time I have a cover fielder. After a bowling change some of the fielders change position so I need to keep going back into the editor to make sure my best fielder is in the cover and my best close catcher (other than the keeper) is at first slip.
Sometimes they are, other times the bowling change has messed up most of the positions in the field. It's "busy work" that adds no value. I'd like to fix a fielder to a position somehow?
Stats have improved a little.
Being able to recreate or create a "live" tournament would be great. I'd like to stream the 2019 IPL, 2019 Big Bash etc player for player and share on my Facebook cricket page but this is only viable if come the 2019 IPL the teams in ICC 2018 are correct. Same with other tournaments.
Getting a community going on Youtube. Twitch and Facebook like other sports games have. The common denominator for other sports games that do well on these platforms (and likely grow their user base) is that the games they stream, upload or sim are relevant. A random tournment streamed with the wrong players doesn't attract a great deal of interest. Having an actual man for man match up the day before a real game is what is required.
Now with this possible in international cricket as of this year’s game, having it possible in domestic cricket, particularly big name T20 tournaments would seem an ideal next stop.
I'm pretty sure of this due to the testing o've done on my cricket Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/cricketmetrics/
I had to use Big Ant's Ashes game to get the right teams, and that game is a "hit and giggle" arcade game with a very poor sim match engine if left to its own devices. 220 plays 220 in most T20 games. The game doesn't do much ball to ball that is realistic. It sets a 6-3 field than bwols at middle stump. Balls only fly thorugh the slips if you have slips. It's very slow ball-by ball. Lots wrong. ICC would be ideal here.
Anyway thanks for the update. Original review below
Original Review
--------------------
ARgghhhh
Not again!
3rd season in career mode. Finally got 2 new recruits trained up. Spent a lot on them as teenagers (27,500 or more for 18 year old is quite a bit in this game. Plus around 2 seasons of technique training). Bought another youngster who had been dropped by another FC team.
All doing well.
First season they hardly play in the firsts. Lots of games for the seconds, lots of investment in training.
Second season the have decent stats. batters averaging in the high 30's bowlers taking 35 wickets at under 40.
3rd season the batters all just about break 40 average and the bowlers get their averages in the high 20's or low 30's. Good - but not brilliant.
The overseas first class players I pick - the initial AND THE reserve have never played any international cricket. My main T20 player is Evin Lewis, the backup is a guy who has never played international cricket in case Lewis is picked for the test series.
Then it happens.
All 7 of them picked for international cricket.
All 3 youngsters, both my main overseas and the backup, and Evin Lewis my T20 player, and the other guy.
7 out of 7 picked. 6 of whom have never played international cricket before ever.
They do not have the highest averages, they do not have the best strike rates, they have not taken the most wickets.
But the game decides to take the whole lot.
Worse, with a couple of injuries I now no longer have 11 fit players so the game invents a guy called "T Francis" who I have to play
Why were my players picked? They were no where near the best . They had virtually no experience, there were better players in almost every other team.
Yes they were quite good. But to strip my team of every single half decent player.
AGAIN
If you read my review of last years game (you'll see I own every damn cricket captain game since 1998 International Cricket Captain by Empire Interactive)
It has done this every game since 2014's version.
The players picked from my team simply are not good enough to play for England (or Ireland or in Evin Lewis's case are not test players, or at least were not test players until I signed them as my overseas T20)
This is getting on my frikking nerves.
No point in playing too well. The game will kick you in the nuts by having 7 of your best players stripped in one little message in the right hand column, despite none of them really being good enough for international cricket and there being far better players from other counties.
Other issues?
The ability to pick from all historical players for some of the inbuilt scenarios seems, on the face of it, to be a step in the right direction.
But in practice it's not that good. If I could play the IPL with the right players in the right teams or set up an IPL to play with the proper teams like this the game would be a winner.
But you can't.
The teams are close to 2018 IPL set up. But are not right
My main issue is that the 2018 IPL has gone. It's done. No-one is interested in it.
This game came out months after the tournament was over.
When IPL 2019 comes around you will never get the right players to play for the right teams.
You can either play last years IPL with almost the right teams... but still quite a few errors, or just a random IPL with random players auctioned to random teams.
I thought the player database and finally having the ability to assign players to teams would allow us to do something like this. To set up something like the IPL or Big Bash to play or sim it. To do a few "what if's" based on what will happen IRL over theg next 8 months.
But you can't.
Thumbs down again for only taking a quarter of a step forward.
I want to give an ICC game a thumbs up.
So please just make a better game. Make it a worthwhile upgrade next time.
And please let us add our own player photos. It's been 11 years now since you took that feature away. Players should be players not just a page of stats.
You don't have to have any photo's already n the game (i know that brings licensing issues) just the ability for us to add our own.
Just like in the past, Cricket Captain continues to be the best Cricket Simulation game available. Along with adding playable test nations Ireland and Afghanistan, there has also been a massive statistical update (adding everybody who has ever played a test into the database) and a much better match engine in the limited over formats. Once again it seems I will get well over a hundred hours out of this game. A must buy for Cricket tragics like myself
I've been playing ICC since the original version in 1998 and have tended to invest in every new version as its come out. This year is no exception. Whilst advances have been made in the broadness of the statistics and variety of domestic and international teams available, very little else has changed and it is the predictable yet dependable game it always was.
There's a few nice changes, such as seperating the fielding coaching from main coaching to ensure anyone who's been a donkey at slip (eg Dawid Malan) doesn't use up a general coaching session best spent elsewhere just to ensure he can catch someone (eg Kohli) a little better.
If you've never experienced any of the previous versions, the game is easy to pick up. It's as in depth as you want it to be, simulating areas you don't wish to play right down to incessent ball by ball tinkering with agression, tactics and fielders if you so wish.
The game engine highlights are smoother but in essence the same as the last time they were massively overhauled a few years ago. If you've played other titles over the years you may also find the commentary is the same as it was 20 years ago which is a bit of a let down...when 3rd Umpiring was introduced there was a nice feature of red/green lights for stumping and run outs which made it more realistic. This has come and gone, but the long awaited feature of seeing run-outs at the bowlers end has finally been added. But then it's also worth pointing out the highlights reel isn't the main feature of the game.
It's ideal for any statto, would be selector/coach in the real world to try their hand at building a successful domestic and/or international team. Out of loyalty and passion for the series - I bought this game. If you want first person cricket action, this isn't for you. Unless you've been specifically waiting for a region/country and its domestic competition to be included in this version, or really need the updated stats to enjoy the title then you may well be better off sticking with an older version.
But if like me you're passionate about the title, enjoy the broad stats and minor tweaks/improvements to the series year on year, then buy it.
Another year of Cricket Captain and same old same old. Buggy game which once again bears little reflection on the game of cricket. The effect you can have with the aggression controls and field settings is next to none, same as before. The game predecides whats going to happen regardless and theres little correlation between how it should work and how it does work, for example scoring faster and losing less wickets playing defensively on a great wicket or scoring fast and losing less wickets being aggressive on a bowlers paradise. Also WTF Childish Things, you can't even get the season scoring in FC to work properly. I have to put up with teams on higher points who have losses where I have draws because you aren't giving the right points for a draw, in fact, you're giving none and I'm losing table position to someone who's actually 10 points or more behind. GG...GG
Thanks for the developer reply.
#1 I've played countless hours of this game over the many iterations, the controls don't do jack mostly, all out unbridled aggression on a flat wicket with clear overhead conditions and your team will struggle to chase the last 65 runs in ten overs for that 300 run chase. One bar from the top and they'll score at 5 an over. Go the whole way and they'll be offering chances all day and do bugger all else. Suggestion: Make the batsman aggression have different effects in different formats. Also lmao, even experts in the game have no idea what or if any effect is had by atmospheric conditions. Sounds like you've just decided rng is the way to go. Spanking up big totals on bad wickets in cloudy conditions over two day, next match batsmans paradise and all out sun and bundled out both teams for stuff all. Don't even try to tell me this makes sense feller.
#2 You will want to go and brush up hard on the points scoring systems of domestic first class competitions because I'm damn well telling you that in most competitions even with bonus points in the event of a draw the teams split the points for a win. Do it. Go check, find you're wrong and damn well fix it.
Another fine-tuned and highly polished effort from the International Cricket Captain team. Improved gameplay and graphics make this an excellent value-for-money buy. The addition of Afghanistan and Ireland to the international career mode allows one to captain either side to Test match, one day and Twenty20 glory. Domestic leagues from most of the major test playing nations are covered too. If you love bats, stats and sports simulation, you will adore Cricket Captain 2018. One small gripe, there's still no female spectators in the crowd. How's a guy meant to bowl a maiden over?
Recommended.
I spent 30 minutes deciding the best Australian XI of all time, Ended up getting Bradman an average of 100. Games really fun and a lot cleaner and improved from 2017. The only bug I had was in career it didn't let me select "no 20 over side" but I went back and then reselected it and it worked
