Great tool
Well, as of 3/8/2024, This is useful for able to actually see the desktop in VR. As Steam VR broke it's own Desktop viewer view. So it's the only way to see it for me.
As for using it as a floating window, it doesn't work. Avoid this if that is your plan.
I assume you need to own Virtual Desktop first to use this.
Stopped working for me. Won't launch properly. Built in basic Steam VR desktop mode is waaay more functional. Garbage.
Super unreliable and the lack of a VR keyboard makes it subpar compared to other apps.
it is now worse than the steam build in desktop, with problem with keyboard, no curve screen and mouse problem, even the developer suggest to use build in desktop instead, what a shame
Looks nice but doesn't work as advertised. There are no instructions so I'm going off of what I found in a couple of other comment threads for how it should function. Currently it only works like an in-game menu... dimming the game/app you open it in. In order to keep using whatever application you have running you have to close this and I'm unable to detach the screen or move it around so... at the moment it's kind of not useful.
Broken.
I launch it from Steam VR, nothing happens. I Launch it from Oculus, a load screen appears and then it crashes.
Doesn't work .. can't get it to start using HP Reverb & Steam VR. Click the button it says it's running, nothing appears in VR.
Works great on Valve Index. It takes a while to startup as you seem to have to click on the window on your desktop before it will render on your HMD. It has a ton of options and settings that are easy to use. I would recommend using a mouse rather than motion controllers though.
ya know it surprise's me that this has pretty much come to an end:?:*(
yes VR desktops are all but dieing out
i put alot of hope into such a thing but found lil to no advancements or anything that would see this take over the normal way of computing.
now that we have found that hardware and software take huge efforts to even function maybe all we have todo is wait for nvidia or ati to really push VR ahead, its our only hope........even the headsets are taking over the hardware just like monitors.
anyway
i hope sometime in the future
VR DESKTOPS COME BACK IN FULL FORCE
A must-have VR program for me. But not for the main program itself but for the Virtual Desktop Dashboard it adds to SteamVR.
This lets you view one whole monitor at a time and use the controller to laser-point-control the mouse cursor, just like SteamVR's built-in "Desktop" view. However unlike SteamVR's Desktop, if you have more than one monitor it doesn't show all of them at once shrunk-to-fit; it shows one at a time (you can cycle through them) nice and big and legible. Also better than SteamVR's built-in Desktop, if you launch a program as admin and get the Windows UAC "are you sure?" prompt, this won't make your desktop-in-VR view non-responsive but will let you see and click on that prompt.
You can grab the current monitor's window with the controller and position it in 3-D space, and when you close the SteamVR menu it will stay fixed at that spot in VR. (At this time it unfortunately cannot be resized.)
Wow I was hesitant due to the reviews but this is everything I've ever wanted. My problem was I use the desktop from within vr to switch games, multitask in elite etc but the stupid windows focus and UAC nonsense made it so i have to keep taking off my hmd. No more! Now I open the steam overlay and instead of choosing desktop I click virtual desktop and boom, click wherever without any focus issues and has no notable impact on performance. Seriously fuck these negative reviews,
Completely broken, won't start up no matter what you do.
Don't waste your money and time.
I'm just glad steam agreed to refund this for me when it was already outside the 14 day period, seeing as it never worked.
Finally pulled the trigger on Virtual Desktop/Dashboard, mostly so that I can have my Desktop open while I play PokerStars VR. I am using WMR Samsung Odyssey + and it works almost* flawlessly. There is zero performance impact.
*Almost:
- The controls/keyboard do not work inside a Citrix Desktop window. I can point and items will highlight but you cannot actually click on anything. Not a deal breaker for me but sucks I can't work while the dashboard is up. Hope the devs take note of this and fix this is a future update for the IT pro's in the crowd.
- The keyboard is a bit wonky. Many times when I open the keyboard after placing the cursor in the url box for example and try to hit the backspace key on the keyboard, it just closes the keyboard instead.
- I have to make sure that one controller is pointed way off the screen in a different direction in order to use the keyboard (one handed) otherwise the littler blue light just moves around the keyboard and I cant click any keys.
Other than a few minor annoyances, it has been worth the $. Definitely recommend if you want to watch youtube, movies, etc. while playing non action games like Poker. :-)
Being unable to scale makes this practically worthless as a gaming tool. It's just your full desktop giant on screen. You can move it around but being unable to scale down, say, a discord window, brings this to questionable use. No update from the developer on this for over 7 months
Works well for me, and crashes alot less than the built-in "Desktop" view. I like how you can move it around. Only downside is that the keyboard sometimes wants to go behind the overlay. Overall- Great.
The virtual dashboard is the coolest thing ever! I'm literally playing a game within a game or browsing the web. I sometimes struggle to get the mouse working (stuck in spot) but after switching back and forth a bit- it's possible to get it unstuck.
I've been starting it up AFTER I start my games (takes a short wait for it to appear) but everything is working fine as of 11/28/2018.
The problem is the lack of inital guidance which had me asking "Is this even working?" at the start. The answer is yes- it works; but I still haven't put enough time into it yet to confirm it to not work. If it does stop working for me then you'll see me return with an updated/edited review pretty quickly.
Quick start: Once in-game; You simply click the new Virtual Desktop button that appears- and use your grab button (WMR)
at the top of the window and drag it up a bit. Pop! It's now in your VR game world.
doesnt work, cant connect to service no matter what i do. buy at your own risk!
Simply amazing and must have for all VR users: easy way to switch from your current running app/game into a desktop and control your computer without need of putting HMD down.
I hate that it acts like a game, spamming your friends with a "Now Playing" notification every time you start SteamVR. which for me is a lot! (Probably an underlying issue with Valve's Dashboard system)
Despite this major annoyance. it's still the only desktop dashboard that is actually usable. Valve's is just terrible with multiple monitors and mouse-clicks often not working.
I haven't had the issue others are having with it not working at all.
this application is hit or miss. sometimes i can use it. sometimes i cant. i keep it though since its amazing when it does work. and there really isnt any way to troubleshoot it. or at least i never et anywere when i try
