I purchased this game in a spirit of eager nostalgia. I remember playing WAY too many hours of Empire on my old Amiga computer back in 1987.
The current version is an effectively unplayable bug ridden disgrace. It would be fine as a beta version in a debugging phase. Needs MASSIVE debugging to be worth anything.
Edit: Grammer
If you have every played the original Empire game, this game is not it! I was hoping it was a faithful update/copy. But it is not. I got bored after no time. Sorry I owned and played the original game in the 1980s/1990s.
fell in love with this great strategy game on my Amiga ages ago - excited to play it agai on my laptop
I've been trying hard to like this version but i've decided to stop playing it. There are a few bugs still that are a bit annoying, but not a deal breaker. The two things that bug me most are 1. the auto map generator is garbage so i have to make my own 'random' maps by hand. The other major annoyance is i see no option to change the production speed/cycle. Armies come out way too fast and i want to slow it down. This helps make the game about strategy and gets me through a map quicker.. When there are too many cities and too many units in play, each round gets too looong and tedious.
Was a great game in it's day. This version is very buggy verging on unplayable.
This is a fum game when you don't feel like thinking as much as you do with a game like Civilization. But there are some bugs in the program: when setting production in the cities, the "Repeat" function doesn't work - the box still comes up after every completed production. Also, the Goto function tends to malfunction with the Transports - they will suddenly be diverted to the top of the board, or to a city that may be land locked or belong to an enemy. When setting up a sized board, sometimes the width will pop to 4000 and can't be changed without restarting the program. It would be nice if the sized could be set lower than 100 x 100 for shorter games/
seems like a simple game, but the hours fly by. Pick a small map though or it will go on forever. 300 cities is good.
I like this remake of an old favorite. The multiplayer LAN has some bugs. I am hoping an update will fix the issues. This is a great little war game!
I would love to recommend this game, but I can't at this price. Too many bugs and it's missing a bunch of modern touches available with bigger screens etc. At .99 this would be acceptable, but for $6.99 I can't justify it.
I have played the original game Empire Wargame of the Century years ago and I throughly enjoyed it for months on and off. It was not my only game but it was great fun. Naturally I bought Empire Wargame of new Century to go with my much more modern computer. The first disappointment was not being able to name your ships. The graphic images were adequate but not impressively better in any way. There was no resistance from neutral cities, making the game much duller. I never got to attack and enemy city because I never got that far in the game until it hung up on a perpetual moving loop that could not be stopped unless you loaded a previos save which wasted a lot of effort. I played the game two days in a row and each day it hung up on moving pieces looping without stopping and making the game unplayable. Even moving around the map was unbearbly slow.. The first day I had the game an aircraft carrier and a fighter were continually trading places on the ocean when I ordered the fighter to land on the aircraft carrier for the first time.
The second day I played the game I had a troop transport and an army (tank) both move onto an island and trade places on the island in a continuous unbreakable loop at a high speed which took all the games memory and made it impossible to give commands to the units involved or any other units inthe game. I ordered the tank to land and the tank to the transport ship with it onto the land. How the game got published with this bugs in place like this is incredible. These bugs where not in the original game. This game unlike the original game did not give youthe ability to give orders to groups of your units over an area of the the map. Also flight paths did not work in this game althrough the Help section did show a command for making flight paths. The music did not signal events in the game unlike the original game. The music was crap in my opinion. This game is someone's idea of making a quick buck. This game is a complete waste of money and should never have been published in its present form. I bought the game yesterday and it sucks. I have never seen a computer game this bad before in my 20 years of gaming. Don't buy it!
Captures spirit of original very well, just spent 4 hours, didn't notice the time... Huge maps. If you are a long time war gamer (not RTS or 4X) you will enjoy this. Only reason I discount the 4X is that there is no city building or tech tree/resource management. Very addictive gameplay however. Pick it up... the price is right, and it's good fun.
