I was extremely pleased to find out there was a modern sequel to one of my favorite Arkanoid/Breakout clones, PowBall.
What made Powball extremely cool was the emphasis on weaponry and chaos, which is not only awesome on it's own, it helped it avoid some of the genre's annoying pitfalls. You can also freely switch between any weapons you have, so there's less of an emphasis on putting yourself in danger to get the right powerups. Being able to upgrade your paddle, buying weapons and ammo as you progressed through stages was also very cool and unique for the genre.
Renaissance is a further improvement in that you can have multiple balls in stock to release as you see fit - as long as you keep at least one in play, you're fine. Although there are still some of those cases where there's a block in a very awkward, difficult to hit spot, this really keeps the game moving forward. Your paddle is also less destructible than in earlier versions of Powball, you can take quite a few direct hits now; but you'll up against some heavy resistance before long, so don't get too comfy.
The upgrade in visuals is also greatly appreciated too: as before, there's tons of explosions, fx and things just constantly moving - it's all very, very smooth. It's also just nice to be able to play Powball again without having to dust off an old registered version in DosBox. (You can even play the old version's stages plus some vintage Arkanoid style ones)
If I had anything negative to say, it's that the music is a bit drab and downbeat for my liking and sometimes it can almost TOO chaotic once a stage's timer has run down all the way; but that's all part of the challenge I suppose.
Challenge is another thing worth mentioning : if you lose all your lives, that's it, no continues, you restart from Stage 1. You can quit and save between stages; but the point is to play through them all in order, just like the arcades (and of course you can purchase extra lives and balls in the shop to help keep you alive as long as possible.) This isn't a deal breaker for me at all personally; but I know it might be for some people.
This is a decent Arkanoid/Breakout-type game with a few unique tweaks, namely co-op for up to 3 players, lots of powerups and different weapons to switch between on the fly. It also has a level editor, which I have yet to try but pretty much ensures almost infinite replay value. It takes a game or two to fully understand the gameplay and controls (moreso if you adjust the deadzone) and get used to switching between weapons, but once you figure it out the game is easy to play yet provides a good challenge.
If you like games like this it's worth trying for the price.
Hello Mr Hamilton. Thank you for making the game easier. I have managed to complete Classic and Retro and managed to get to 100 level on Renaissance twice. Am determined to complete this one as well. My partner is still struggling with all of the games though. Thank you again.
Ann Sitzia.
Welcome to PowBall Renaissance
This isn't your classic Breakout game or Arkanoid, however, given that is has open endless possibilities of making your own levels, refusing to purchase upgraded ammunition for your weaponry and adjusting levels to that, you can pretty much play this game in any form or shape you want. Classic, Retro, Modern, or PowBall style.
Make no mistake this game comes with over 300+ levels, including those from PowBall Deluxe, the original game for DOS/Windows.
Good news, game runs perfectly smooth, higher resolution support, and even 4K if you are into that. Level Editor that lets you comprise your own set of master levels with gimmicks of your choice using what the game engine has provided. Perhaps the game may require a Workshop functionality so players can share their own level sets for others to play as a bonus (that is entirely up to steam if I am not mistaken).
The gray news, some weapons have been depreciated from the classic original game. The gravitron weapon no longer exists, so you won't be able to manipulate a balls motion (though the fans still remain part of the gimmick), grenade launcher no longer exists (its functionality however, has been added to the rockets instead, allowing you to tilt them in a direction you see fit based on your movement). Coins down, alchemite up. You no longer get the fancy coins, so the natural resource of alchemite is your new best friend. It is up to you to decide whether the strategy between shop exploitation of selling/buying is an advantage here (game can be beaten without really buying anything).
The combinational weapons (single, double, automatic) are gone as well and have been reduced to simply single shot machine gun and plasma. At this point I don't see a reason to have it, though upgrading back in the old one was nifty aside from losing the weapon along with your life which this logic luckily is not applied in this version, so die as much as you want. Rockets are plain warheads, the strongest of the three rocket types that used to be part of the game (Big Red, Yellow Jacket, Blue Warhead). Good news though, no friendly fire on you, as the explosion and shrapnel used to kill you on close range.
Bad News, if any is strictly opinionated based on everyone's experience. This isn't your classic breakout, but perhaps it can be accommodated to your liking in some way. There is an editor after all, so making classic levels shouldn't be a strict problem.
If you liked the original more than this, its free, but it is a low resolution game running at 320x200. Still playable, but nothing smoother than this one. It may not be an exact copy, but it sure is a better upgrade.
I played DXBall, BeatBall series, as well as the original arkanoid. Each of these games have their own style and there are knock-offs! The only thing unique about each of these games is their gimmicks, powerups, physics, and maybe content, if any. I enjoyed this game very much and tend to continue to play it. Best of all it has multiplayer, so take that as you wish, supporting a variety of control types. Including your faithful minion...AI!
---Pro---
- 20 Achievements
- 16 Unique Powerups (excluding some hidden special ones)
- 100 Levels each for both Classic and Renaissance Set.
- Arkanoid Level Set
- Level Editor
- Mod Menu / Editor (for Custom Graphics, Sound, Music)
This game has continued dedication from the developer improving an already solid game.
Lots of customisation and game types to play through, MP co-op which has been fun playing through with the ex gf..
For the price it's a steal, if you're into breakout games, then this will satisfy that itch.
Ball bricking bashing at its finest! Play this game with your graphics cranked all the way up! On top of a free demo to try it out, how can you lose? Fair warning, dont have anything else planned for the day when you start playing. If you think you are good, try multiball with multiplayer. Easily a party game with controllers and full screen
An enjoyable homage to the original powball!
Firstly, all of the positive reviews for this game are made by friends of the developer and have hardly any time played in-game, check for yourself. Since making this review I have also been spammed with harassment requests and messages by not only the developer but also 2 other players who are on his friends list. Steam Support has been notified of this.
The developer tried to get my review banned, and since that didn't work he has made up a story in the developers comment section, but I'll leave the reader to make up their own minds. But for the sake of transparency, this review has been checked by official Steam moderators and it has been given approval.
I've had a terrible experience with this and I thoroughly regret purchasing the game. Thankfully I am able to get a refund which I have applied for.
The game failed to load repeatedly and when it did, it was just a black screen. I FINALLY was able to speak to the developer behind the game and I was amazed at the rudeness I received from him when I asked for assistance. He repeatedly told me that he is no longer working on this game and so the game will not work on certain machines because he refuses to patch this dead game. Fair enough, so I told him I will refund it, which apparently made him extremely angry and he accused me of wasting his time. I am of mixed colour despite being born in the UK (same country as this white developer) and when I was conversing with him I had a profile picture of myself up so anyone could see I was mixed race. The developer brought my skin colour into the conversation and told me that it was all my fault because I am foreign and do not understand English. He went on to say some other things relating to my race which I refuse to even type out here.
I just wish steam allowed you to put screenshots with reviews so I could show how disgracefully I was treated when trying to get some help by the developer to get this game running. But with the angry/racist developer aside, this game simply does not run and goes to a black screen. I have many other games and triple A titles which I have zero issues with running, on max settings etc.
Many thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope this does not effect anybody else.
Great classic breakout gameplay with some interest new mechanics to the old formula
