Unhack, the first game created under the InvertMouse name, was produced in 2012. That means The Last Birdling happens to be my fifth anniversary project. This game is a culmination of all the lessons I have learned through the past five years. Now, I would like to share with you several features available in The Last Birdling:
Dual perspectives:
The Last Birdling alternates between Bimonia and Tayo's perspectives. Follow their journeys from childhood to adolescence as they struggle to maintain their friendship against all odds.
Multiple endings:
There are 21 decisions to make throughout Bimonia and Tayo's journeys. Depending on their resolve, this story will conclude in one of five ways. Use the progress tracker to determine how to obtain every ending.
Glossary:
Dive into The Last Birdling's lore through the glossary page. Throughout your journey, you will find links that take you to relevant entries.

Thank you! I hope you will find the experience worthwhile.

The Last Birdling, written by Invert Mouse, is an emotional & tear-jerking visual novel. Featuring an opportunity to uncover the dark truths of each perspectives.
Tayo, the proud archer daughter of Airin
& Binamon, the remnant Birdling species on earth.
The chapters feels short paced making it in my opinion easier to not get bored from 1 perspective's narrations.
Each character features a choice that shapes the outcomes of their (bonded) friendships.
Will they care for each other or will each go their own ways ? The choice lies in your hands.
The Last Birdling is a very good visual novel game with a beautiful story. The graphics are nice and the soundtrack is Chill and relaxing... I recommend it. 💗💗💗
This is truly a really great game and well worth the price-tag. I will get into the pros and cons:
❤ The art is pretty and varied. Many of the characters have character portraits, and CG scenes are also included.
❤ The story is super compelling, dark, and engaging. There were times where I chuckled, where I was at the edge of my seat, and when I was just shocked or deeply saddened by where the story was going or had gone.
❤ Your choices DO matter and can result in different endings. Some of the choices are fairly hard to make as well, and I struggled some in deciding at some points.
❤ The game is easy to navigate and allows you to backtrack if you need to reread dialogue or even if you messed up on a decision, and want to go back to pick the proper choice. This is a super nice feature that a lot of other VNs tend to lack.
❤ The amount of time you get is pretty good as well. It took me nearly 3 hours to reach just one ending, and I tend to be a fast reader in general. I believe there are about 5 endings, so if you wanted to complete all the endings, I could easily see it being a 3.5 or 4 hour game. For $6, that is super reasonable.
❤ The game includes a glossary menu that helps with world building and explaining the events of the story without the characters having to flatout explain the world and the lore. I thought this was super clever because it allows someone to learn about the world without it feeling forced through character dialogue. However, you also don't *need* to read the glossary to understand what is happening in the story - it is just a nice method of filling in the details.
❤ The music/soundtrack fits nicely with the game, even if its nothing particularly fancy
The cons are few but they include:
✘ This may or may not be a con, but keep in mind the story gets DARK. It doesn't just stick with a cutesy story about 2 kids like how it appears on the store page, but the kids do grow up and face some very twisted, depressing, dark situations. So if you are sensitive to this kind of thing, I would just avoid this game entirely. Some topics include murder, S3xual Assau1t, abvse, violence
✘ There's no voice acting at all, which is a bit of a bummer, but doesn't draw away from the overall quality
Overall, I would recommend this game at its current price, especially if you are a fan of VNs and dark themes/subject matter do not deter you.
The Last Birdling focuses on the unlikely friendship between girls of two different races that do not see eye to eye, from their childhoods to adulthood.
The story is solid, albeit overall very depressing.
There are a dozen or so different endings, the triggers of which can be known beforehand. Choices clearly show which trigger has been activated. That is a nice feature which is unfortunately uncommon in visual novels with lots of choices.
Artwork is of good quality. Music is nice and fits well with the artwork and the story. No voice acting though.
Overall, the game is well recommended, especially given its low price. Rating: 9/10.
A very compelling happy & sad story, about friendship and feud. Made me cry.
Longer than most visual Novels I have played so far. Will take probably at least 2 hours or more if you read everything and want to find all of the 5 endings, which can be tracked with the progress bar, so you don't have to use guides, and will be accomplished faster via the skip & jump functions once you read trough it once.
Pro: Characters and Story, multiple Endings and Choices, good even though simple art
Con: Even on max speed AUTO function is pretty slow and should also have different color to see if it's activated (does make a sound when toggled though)
Great Job by Invert Mouse.
This game is definitely worth playing.
The story gets better as it goes along, and the endings are where the story really shines.
It takes about 5hrs for your first playthrough.
There are 21 shared chapters, with 5 possible endings afterwards.
Pros:
- It really feels as though you had an impact on the characters and how their lives play out.
- This game isn't afraid to embrace "dark" themes without shying away or trying to lighten them up.
- The game lets you decide where you stand on moral issues, rather than delivering sermons about it.
- The point-ranges you need for each ending are shown at the end of the game, so you can work out how many points you need for the endings you haven't unlocked yet.
- The system is pretty simple; each decision has the potential to increase one character's affection for the other, or to not affect it at all. The ending you get depends on how many points you've gained in favour of the two characters throughout the game.
- An image appears in the top right of the screen when you make a decision which increases a character's points. It's an easy way to keep track of your points, but it's also easy enough to ignore this.
If you don't enjoy it you will forget about it easily enough, but if you enjoy it you may finally feel a sense of connection & satisfaction that is often missing from visual novels.
Spoiler: There aren't many games that let you live together happily ever after as criminals and murderers.
Story of beautiful friendship.. or not, depends on your choices.
Too bad there is no real branching plot, just different dialogues and endings.
But still has great story and decent length. Beware though it's pretty depressing.
8/10 Vi is cute
(I played most of this offline, which is why my time played isn't accurate)
A lovely visual novel which reminded me of The Fox and the Hound. It starts out sweet but be warned it gets darker, and have the tissues ready :) Really interesting story and I enjoyed the world building. Music was good and atmospheric. I liked the art style as well, especially the colour schemes.
Choices depend on whether the two main characters are friendly/protective towards the other or fearful/violent, with chapters switching between Yoyo and Bibi. Although once you've achieved the very good and very bad endings, it's constant skipping to get the other ones with no change in text at all (and had a few crashes along the way, but only when having to skip large chunks).
I would definitely recommend.
The Last Birdling is a fantasy story visual novel with multiple endings and choices to be made, set in a different world (with a mixture of east-meets-west). The story is narrated through two main POVs (Tayo, a human girl expert in archery and Bimonia, a young bird-like hybrid entity of a species that has been at war with humans) and your choices affect the relationship between the characters and how the endings will play out. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll skip that bit but, well, yep, better come in prepared as some bits, while not directly graphical, do contain some ghastly bits. Of course for fans of something like the Higurashi series, it's probably tame. In that regard, it shares a similar feeling as Cursed Sight (another work of the same dev, which I also recommend checking out), in that the world is definitely a cruel place and there are no magic tricks that can change that. There is a constant sense of foreboding, that something's not quite right and, well, stuff happens.
Anyway, being a visual novel you can imagine it runs fairly well even on a toaster and, well, that is the case. I used the Xbox One controller and Big Picture mode to play it and it was definitely a better experience thanks to that. The achievements are helpful to track your progress. There is also an extensive glossary that further helps with the world building and it may be good to give it a quick read before starting the game although you'll get prompts as you progress with glossary entries to check out. The overall presentation, music and sound effects are also well done and contribute to some of the more powerful moments. So, yes, very recommended indeed!
The Last Birdling is not for the faint of heart. -My own being one of those. I had bouts of crying, shouting at my monitor and constantly feeling distressed and unnerved. The Last Birdling is part horror, part thriller and part love, and it’s up to you and your choices which will have the strongest impact on the 5 possible conclusions. Our two female protagonists in this fantasy fable is the birdling Bimona (Bibi), and the human Tayo (Yoyo). Birdlings are a humanoid race with many of the characteristics of birds, and them and humans don’t mix. In fact, a war, a few decades past, made humans kill out all the birdlings to the very brink of extinction. When Yoyo and Bibi have a chance meeting deep in the forest as kids, an unlikely strong bond and growing love takes hold of both them and our now branching story. -And it really is a great tale, in all it’s gory detail. With everything you’ll need from a great visual novel, from great music, really great art, lots of save spots, gallery, ingame encyclopedia etc., there really is nothing at all I can fault with The Last Bridling… well maybe a frayed heart.
In its core this game is a blend of some of the stronger Point&Click games and VNs here on Steam, mixed with an anime art style. If you have enjoyed VNs with multiple endings set in fanatsy worlds, this one could be for you.
Initially drawn in by the defined art style and promising concept, this VN proved to be so much more. The story is unique compared to other works here on Steam and shines with its surprises and immersion. It combines both emotions and violence and offers surprising twists and shed tears. Both main characters have unique traits and are very round characters. Although some may not enjoy the concept of reading about the stories of young children and their development into adults, think about Telltale's The Walking Dead. Choices affect the characters' development and reveal different sides, which ultimately changes the ending.
Be warned: There is no definite ending to this game. You'll have to live with your choices.
A VN for everybody who enjoys the anime art style but doesn't necessarily want to rely on the typical anime content (cute girls, girl on girl, silly plot and weak development). Unique story line, surprises and a strong, independent voice as a writer come together in this violent but fantastic novel. I highly recommend!
I wishwishwish there was a 'neutral' or 'darned if I know quite what I think of it' option, because I was back and forth on this one the whole time I was playing it. You follow two protagonists--Tayo, a human girl, and Bimonia, the possibly last of a winged humanoid species--as they grow up and attempt to overcome the hatred between their two species. The writing is clunky and erratic in tone, many events clumsily dark, the character development uneven, and the worldbuilding and internal logic have holes you could drive a Star Destroyer through. But there's still something to the premise and story, and two of the five endings actually worked for me. This is one of those stories that could have been very good, but instead is frustrating and baffling. (Also, SO MANY TRIGGER WARNINGS. Don't play if you have common triggers.)
For all the beautiful art, music, and story this vn has to offer, I can not in good conscience recommend it. While the final reveal is certainly shocking, and explains the big question on all the characters minds, it plays into tropes you may find all to familiar in LGBT circles, bad ones, ones we all need to strive to leave out of our stories. Came super close to having amazing commentary on psychological trauma but fails to say naything meaningful.
Or, to state it more clearly, the story is needlesly gritty, goes above and beyond to break it's characters, every ending is a downer, and the one ending where the girls live and escape falls super flat.
Edit: And, in retrospect, it's quite ironic that a story that goes out of it's way to point out that TWO birdlings could barely survive off one hunting ground, completely ignores the fact that an ecosystem can't be susttained where an apex predator can only feed on another apex predator. One birdling would consume a single village faster than they could reproduce, let alone a whole species.
This is a wonderful Visual Novel. The art is adorable and the music is stunning! I love music with oriental themes to it and they fit the style of the novel completely.
I wasn't expecting to become so attached to Bibi and Yoyo and I'm not going to lie, I shed some tears... quite a few. It's difficult for a VN to make me cry and Katawa Shoujo has been the only one to succeed up until now.
I reccomend this game, 100%. It has a touching story of two races at war and the children that get caught up in the traditions and ancient beliefs of the adults. The style this is done in as wonderful and I am in love with those two cuties.
Choices are also good and relitvely frequent with a nice UI to boot. 9/10 ~ because there's always room to grow ;w;
A fun visual game, interesting story with quite a few decision points.
Can or will friendship overcome the history of their races
For you to decide how the journey could go.
The outcome at the end depending on choices made during the game.
It is a short game but I'm certainly glad I played it.
I also really liked the music tracks which did emphasise the story.
I hardly write reviews but this game really needs some promotion and can't go left unsaid. The story starts sweet as they are young and exploring but soon throws you into choices that leave you thinking. I won't go into further detail as you should go in as blind as possible.
The different endings depending on your choice are nicely fleshed out, worth to go through them. Certainly some of them threw a curveball, which was a pleasant surprise. My first playthrough was about 6 hours long, I think I'm a medium speed reader, and I finished the other endings in another 2 hours. You can skip the text automatically if you've already are familiar with the lines and it will stop whenever you stumble upon unread lines. Also the skip speed is really nice.
Even if this Visual Novel isn't voiced the music is very ambient and amazingly fitting to every scene. What I found a nice little touch that whenever a part played out in the rain it would have rain sound for a few second and then it would diminish, which didn't leave you with constant repeating rain noise in the background. It was enough to get my attention to "hey, rain" and then not bother me anymore through repeat. It's appreciated they made the effort in little noises to create more immersion.
I would highly recommend this Visual Novel to friends. Maybe not to people who are starting out with Visual Novels as it deals with heavy themes and absolutely don't sugar coat them. (Which I highly appreciate, too little VNs of this caliber story.) Absolutely worth my money I enjoyed playing through it.
This 7th visual novel from InvertMouse feature two female protagonists - a human girl Tayo and a Birdling girl Bimonia who encounter each other in the forest while in their childhood years and form an unlikely friendship. Amidst the backdrop of a massive fear and dislike of each other between humans and Birdlings after a war which left only Bimonia and her mother Lulululu as the last Birdlings alive and living near human habitation together with multiple grey shades of morality among humans and Birdlings, Tayo and Bimonia's friendship and survival will be put to the test in this thriller and horror visual novel over 21 chapters as Tayo and Bimonia grow up to adulthood and reach different phases of their lives.
The game has plenty of save slots to allow different gameplay choices to be made during the game, with popup icons of a red/green feather and a portrait of Bimonia/Tayo to help players reach all the 5 possible endings where the number of red and green feathers required to reach each ending will be shown. Soundtracks, artwork and overall game presentation are good. Recommended with soundtrack and artbook DLC when at discount or bundle offer as it takes less than 10 hours to reach all endings.
(Also recommended to download and finish the demo version of this game before buying this game and adding to library for an additional easy to finish 100% completed game)
The last birdings tells a story of 2 children. A human girl named Tayo and a birdling girl named Bimona. In a world were both their species are sworn enemies, where despite this both children (ignorant to the feuds between both species) forms a bond with one another that last through out the years despite the odds stacked agaisnt eachother in their life.
The game is very bittersweet, some would say it is outright depressing and yet it is also very well written and has a lot of emotional scenes. Our characters (especially our 2 MCs) are morally grey, flawed as they should be based on how they were raised and their situation. We see just how much both girls mean to eachother, we see why they care so much about eachother despite the odds stacked agaisnt them.
Admitedly the story is not very long, you can finish it in less than 5 hours (depending on your reading speed) but condering the price I don't think it's much of a drawback.
I would definately recomend this game to anyone who wants a great story.
German further down...
InvertMouse is celebrating 5 years existence with her best title. Wounderful Artwork, nice music and a tragic story about a forbidden friendship.
It reminded me sometimes of Disneys "The Fox and the Hound". Seems like some aspects were inspired from it.
Pro:
- Cute Artdesign
- Over 5 hour content
- Ending requirements IN GAME and it keeps track of your choices. I want that more often in other VNs
- No blind choices
- Glossar included
- Ear Animation of the Birdings (So cute ^_^)
Contra:
- No Voices
PS: NO Yuri includes, just friendship

- Keine blinden Entscheidungen
- Enthält Glossar
- Ohr-Animation der Vogelmenschen (So süss ^_^)
Contra:
- Keine Stimmen
PS: Es ist KEIN Yuri
I'm not great at writing reviews but here I go anyway.
First off, I highly recommend it. It's a bit on the shorter side compared to some other VNs, but the quality is very high, and it is very much worth the money and time.
The Last Birdling is a VN about two children, one human and one not. Their species hate each other, and kill each other on sight. A birdling child is playing in the forest one day when a human child approaches her, and the two become friends.
They struggle to keep their friendship intact and secret from the humans, against increasingly poor odds.
It took me about two and a half hours to get my first ending (though it took me 30 minutes to finish the demo, and I fast forwarded through the "demo chapters" once I played the main game, so assume about 3 hours for your first run if you read fast like I do).
