Galactic Keep is essentially a sci-fi fantasy board game with (very) light RPG elements. The vibrant artwork gives the game a unique psychedelic look. The story is involved enough but not particularly deep. Although game play is quit simple, it's enjoyable & engaging.
Game Details:
You command seven different characters (two human, one robot & five aliens) who investigate a crash site of a space ship. One by one, each character is deployed to explore the board. A d10 die is rolled to determine the number grid squares your character moves. As the board is revealed, you combat hostile aliens, discover treasures, uncover clues & ultimately solving the mystery of the crashed ship.
Combat is simple - you have four options: Attack, Block, Special Use, & Item Use. An initiative roll is made to determine who goes first. Attacks are "I-go-you-go" until one side dies. There is no inherent armor or defense. Dice are rolled per weapon type, usually with modifiers. Damage is inflicted accordingly. Blocking doesn't stop or reduce an enemy's damage but instead grants your character a health point increase. Special Use allows a character to employ any special weapons or equipped items. Item Use opens up the character's inventory to access various grenades, healing kits or other combat boosters. In the end, combat success is largely determined by who goes first and how many healing kits your character possesses.
With the hard core option, the game ends when all seven of your characters die. On normal mode, dead characters are only removed from the game temporarily.
Verdict:
Galactic Keep isn't an RPG, but rather something like a sci-fi version of the old 1990's fantasy board game Hero's Quest. Like that popular board game, it's quite entertaining despite its lack of depth.
I didn't expect much, and I got exactly that.
Not an RPG whatsoever. The map offers no more than a succession of 1 on 1 fights. Which would have been good enough for me, had there been a modicum of tactical value to them.
There is none.
As you can predict as soon as the rules are explained, whoever gets the initiative wins the fight. There is no need to think.
Apart from that, everything is RNG-based. On 1d10, which means large fluctuations. Enough to occasionally lose the initiative roll despite your base stats. Enough to occasionally lose a fight despite having the initiative.
Even your movement on the map is rolled on 1d10, for no sensible reason.
I thought that the art would be better, but the tactical vacuum alone grants a thumb down.
Buy yourself a 10-sided die instead.
A fun little game. I love the art and the extra little bit of text description here and there. The combat is good and i like how you can place items you found into a container that you can access in another play through. Eg. you might have a bot character who cannot use certain heal items so placing it in the container for when you play with a human character for example. If you are into these sorts of games, give it a go. (note: it seems the devs have abandoned finishing the game, sadly. The game had a lot of potential.)
Some first impressions on this. Thus far, I'm REALLY digging this. Encountering monsters has dialogue describing what happens and what they look like, combat is simple yet challenging, the art style is right up my alley, and it's a cool old-school immersive dungeon crawler! This seriously makes me miss playing D&D, far more so than the modern PC D&D games. I like it!
A lukewarm recommendation from me.
Great visuals, lore and character design. Lots of enemy and loot variety.
Let down by iffy, repetitive mechanics (healing, movement, combat). Sadly, the game seems to be discontinued, so no more modules, so the overarching story is incomplete.
I hope they put out more adventures for this. If the art and the blurb appeal to you, its hard to imagine you won't enjoy it.
Honestly, it's just not very good. Unless I've missed some hidden complexity, the combat is about as straightforward as the cardgame War (in a bad way) and there is very little plot to speak of. all and all, I'm not recommending it.
The aesthetics are great and it feels very "board gamey" and I want to like it but...
Send a character out to die. Send another character out to recover the loot/body then continue a little further before die. Repeat. Not an unknown formula but for me it just doesn't work in the board game format.
I saw another reviewer say it reminded them of "D&D". That's exactly what I was hoping for but I didn't get that feeling at all. 20 minutes into the game I stopped caring if my character won or lost the next battle.
Not a bad little game for a cell phone port. Plays like Rezrog (one character goes out, when he dies another from your roster goes out to save him) but lacks the polish of that game. Character icon art isn't very good but the map art is well done. The first module is a little short, but acts as a good prelude to a bigger story. Unfortunely there are currently no more modules. It would have been nice if they had released the tools for users to build their own modules to share.
In spite of the flaws, I still played it all the way through and enjoyed it. I picked it up on a steam sale of $6, so it was worth it. I wouldn't pay much more though.
I like the concept. I like the game. But I keep dying. And I'm not really sure what to do about it.
"Hard as balls" game that easy to play but hard to master.
8/10 would roundkick it two more times!
Finished the Modul included.
I enjoyed it very much, it can be quite challenging i guess, though i took the class with roundhouse kick special, which is very strong. The Story is nice and I've never seen Races and Classes like that, it's very unique.
If you like turnbased roguelikes in Space I can recommed you!
Love the artwork and story. Great pacing so far. I'm glad they ported it to Steam because I don't have an iPhone or iPad.
If you're a fan of old-school sci-fi RPGs/Boardgames, Galactic Keep presses all the right buttons.
Mechanically, this is straighforward dungeon crawler, with quite simple single-character turn-based combat, and not a lot of levels. However, I liked the story and graphics (really gives the title "board game" feel), so I give this game thumbs up for being a small, but fun distraction.
The game made its way to Steam from iOS, but it is not crippled by the fact, aside from a few minor interface problems.
A short first impression, as there are no other reviews yet.
Have enjoyed it so far, as I like the art style.
Rogue-like elements - turn based (move is via 10d die roll), staying in place you can heal) - if you die, you can select another character who can progress to the same location and recover your old cheracter's body, which means you can use that character again after that - your current character picks up all the items your previous character had.
Combat is you go-enemy goes, until one of you is dead or can flee with certain items (e.g. flashbang).
There is some story to the mission you are engaging, have not got very far yet to see how well this turns out.
