Great music, good characters design and costumes, the overall back story of each shikigami are pretty sad but it did make me keep coming back to the game.
Onmyoji is a really good gacha game, I just found some of the activities in this game annoying, like beans throwing mini games thing and the "house" raiding.
But a lot of things to do, a lot of thing to explore, I like how you can get creative with the builds and team composition. but yeah I just have less time now so I decided to quit.
If you have plenty of spare time and you like a gacha game where you can go crazy with team building, then this game is for you.
Character Design, Music, Art. Everything is so beautiful
Great gatcha game, I've literally burnt my phone batteries playing it. Too bad I have not been able to launch it on steam since the new engine update but still worth your time if you enjoy gatcha games with beautiful art and Japanese voice actors.
It's given hours of fun and if you have any issues, support gets back to you in a timely manner. The events range from ones lower levels can do and events that constantly test your skills in the game.
It's a free to play mobile RPG, so as long as you go into it knowing that and adjusting your expectations accordingly, it's great.
I started playing Onmyoji last year because I saw some art from it and I loved it. The art direction is seriously unmatched by any other mobile game currently on the market, and it stands out even among non-mobile games in that regard.
The game itself is genuinely fun & challenging, and it's one of the few mobile games that's managed to keep me playing consistently. It does have an incredibly steep learning curve that is not at all helped along by huge, poorly-translated tutorials and instructions. You'll probably rely more on external guides than in-game tooltips to figure out what the hell you're doing. I don't necessarily see that as a problem, but I know it's a huge turnoff for some people. It's also EXTREMELY grindy (which I happen to like), but if you're after short-term gratification, this definitely is not the game for you.
If you're looking for a really solid turn-based RPG to play off and on over the course of several months +, give it a go.
One of the most addictive games I've played so far, despite the occasional moneygrabbing and worse-than-bad RNG. I'd wish the developers released content in the same order as on other servers (to avoid breaking the game meta). The character designs and illustrations are a m a z i n g. One big issue I have with the game is the lack of cross-platform compatibility: iOS and Android users cannot exchange skins or S-jade packs across operating systems. Despite the faults in that aspect, the game is great for a gacha game and definitely one of the best available for global players.
Little disappointed all things considered.
It's one of the better 'gachas' with a decent story and plenty of PVP to go around, certainly good for the F2P.
PVP elements are also really good.
My recent issue, has been with farming s10 after dropping that calamity of 'sakamochi' on us you've also stealth nerfed s10 drop rates, I'm lucky atm when I get g5 souls let alone g6. Both with / without booster the drop rate is appalling. Not only has the chance for getting good souls been dropped but the amount of souls you get appear to of been. Every time I check the rewards while autoing I'm getting 1-2 g4's with the odd g5. and even had a couple with no souls..
So not only have you limited the amount of autoing we can do you appear to of drastically reduced the rewards on what was previously a shoddy drop rate.
This is for me to practice writing in English.
I apologize in advance if my grammar or English is not right :)
I can't say much about this game yet, because I usually go auto mode while online (great for someone busy in real life! Just make sure you feed that paper doll many sushi as possible). While using auto mode option, I try to level up shikigami I'm working on, earn exp, money, farm fodders or collect materials (souls, shards, and evo), and seal (wanted quests). I get on to check daily login rewards and other refreshed goodies but in my opinion, it's just one of those games you get tired out after grinding to level up so need some rest to play again.
Try to join a guild because not only you can get help but get a lot of benefits. When in a guild you can participate many activities, get rewards, work on quests, have a realm to set up, and able to ask or give shard donations. Some of the features of the realm is adding defense team, promote to level up your shikigami, earn ap/exp. Bonuses to make your grind easier.
Some system was a bit confusing and complex at first to understand as a new player.
Setting up souls, choosing the right team combination, farming fodders, how the stat works, feeding shikigami, upgrading, leveling up, following up the events are some reasons.
In time, I managed to learn by getting advice and suggestions from forums and guides.
Concept and the story are very intriguing and I liked that you get to meet the shikigami from every each chapter. Costume design is delicate, regal, good use of kimono pattern and design fits the shikigami personality. Shikigami are unique with sensible Japanese folklore background story of their own and voice overs are high quality. I only wish there was the Korean version of the voice option which it exists but not yet implemented in Steam. Music has the vibe of good use of Japanese traditional instruments, dreamlike, and mellow. Also, brings out the light and darkness of the Onmyoji world.
One feature I didn't like about the mall was the high prices of mystery amulet that is used to get better grade shikigami (highest to lowest are SSR SR R N). The reason I don't like this is that even though you want to level up the Shikigami you love, some people wants better startup so may tend to focus on getting the SSR or SR set and end up spending a lot of real money to get those. It is also luck based and gamble and you can unpack 50 to 100 amulets and still not be able to get the one you desire. This selling strategy uses psychology to tempt and encourages players to try until their wallet is empty like an addiction. I know it is okay in moderation but it's not easy to do that for most of the people. There should be more ways to get mystery amulet or other useful items without demanding a high price that is not affordable for everyone. For example, an idea is if you finish a quest chapter you get a shikigami of your choice or get loots from chests where the team gets shikigami equally. The good thing is if you have less S-jade there are low-cost S-jade (one time only promo) packs. Other viable options to buy items are from medals, friendship, honor, and jade which you can get from the guild, sending daily friendship, events, and so on. If you manage to buy a permanent jade pouch, it grants 5 jade every 6 hours which is not bad for future investment and will profit. If you have enough jade try to buy the 100 ap daily when you can. Also, buy the souls when it's cheap because I think it gets expensive later on. Anyways, players just starting out needs more opportunities and I know the devs are trying to make events, achievements, quests reward. I thank them for considering and working on this.
I will update more what I like and don't like about it later on but as for now, I'm pretty content. You can't expect all the good in a game. If the dev cares they will try to listen and will update suggested contents and that's what it makes its long run. It's definitely fresh and one of a kind. I wish there was more like this in Steam :D
+ Before it was fully released I was unable to play due to my Asia region but thankfully it was fixed. Also, last time when I played, my linked account was not appearing so I could not log in. Turned out they were doing an update and was restored once I restarted later on. As of today, the size is only adjustable by stretching the window screen but at May 16th, they will support with the full-screen feature. I haven't tried the mobile version and Steam release is my first but it does sound odd you can't switch account and bound to one and only.
+ For my beginner counter build, I'm assembling team of Shuzu (life link that distributes and shares equal amount of incoming damage and helps survivability), her best partner in crime Vampira (high damage output with no Orb consumption & inflict insanely high damage while their HP remains low which she can benefit from Shuzu's damage sharing), Kusa or Ebisu (healer and costs little orbs) and rest of the spots I might choose from suggestions below.
One of the Onmyoji guides says good sample team for Shuzu is Samurai X, Shuzu, Ebisu, Zashiki, Ubume. For her shikigami partners or combinations are Vampira, Kuro, Kamaitachi, One-Eyed, Ebisu, Any other DPS Shikigamis using the Soul [Scarlet], Remaining DPS Shikigamis.
Also, arena PvP is Shuzu, Samurai X, Kaguya, Momo/Ebisu, DPS X 1. The strategy says Shuzu will split the damage among the party and Ebisu/Momo will heal. This will greatly increase team survivability. Being linked, Kaguya and Ebisu can trigger their passive skills to regenerate Orb for the entire team. With the Senecio on Samurai X or Shuzu, as long as the enemy attacks they will be subjected to a chance of getting stunned. DPS recommendations – Vampira, Kuro, Shuten Douji.

+ If the devs are planning to make the different genre of the game one idea is otome and bishoujo type with dateable shikigami. That would be really interesting. Not like the cheap story that people regret buying but a rich story with the Onmyoji-like world. Maybe hero or heroine can be the Onmyoji and work with the shikigami of their choice. Anything is possible :) Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds, Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms, and Nightshade are some example. I just feel like the voice and character concept is top notch and is a waste to see only in this game. Interacting with the shikigami more in-depth and getting to know more of their background would be an exciting journey to play. I know this won't work though since voice over costs a lot of money and the genre is slowly getting noticed outside of Japan but not as much.
+ Personally, I find the pet system a bit tedious but can work with. I'm starving them due to my busy schedule in real life. I feed them once a while until max when I can but still feel pretty guilty for leaving them for days of my absence. For now, I think having to take care of my real dog who needs love and attention 24/7 is enough :P They do give awesome goodies and adorable (reminds me of Tamagotchi) and you have choices of woof or meow.
I'm kinda sad that this game has mixed reviews now, it's wonderful and I luv it <3 Fell in love while I was still playing on my phone, but playing on the computer is much smoother. Love the characters, design and atmosphere are amazing. Gameplay limit on PC doesn't really bother me, I can't imagine how much you have to play to reach it. Also new feature with autofarming is the best thing ever, haha. Of course, this is F2P mobile port, so why even hate stamina system? For me this is just a much, much more enjoyable version of mobile game that I like.
I keep seeing these "limit to how long you can play" but I played for 7.2 hours straight and haven't bumped into that. I am IN LOVE WITH THIS GAME. I never played the mobile version, but only because my phone can't handle games. For a game that sucked me in for that long I say it's a really good game. (plus there's a lot of hot boys too and not just cute/ big boobed ladies.) ;^)
A lot of people are jumping all over this game for being a basic port and costing 5 dollars. I think it's doing a disservice to what this game is trying to be; an incredibly sleek, UI-friendly and player-friendly remix of a tried and true formula, while removing many things that are excessively RNG.
The game's strongest comparison can be made with Summoner's War. If you know that game, I'll say the ways it's superior:
-Type advantages/disadvantages don't exist. As such, each monster is unique and stands on it's own.
-Monsters can be incredibly unique with endless synnergies. Deciding on a perfect team is as much taste as optimizing.
-Rune sets are much more interesting, and you can only have one active per char with another boosting an attribute. Leveling runes NEVER fails, but you must feed them other runes to level them up (No spending 2 million mana to get a +12, you'll get there eventually)
-Evo dungeons are open 24/7
-Buffs can be PAUSED at will. An hour of bonus EXP lasts an hour of farming EXP.
-Very interesting lore/storyline, fully acted with some high end VA's (Your pet fox is Tony Tony Chopper!)
-Coop is heavily encouraged, as you get bonuses for every dungeon, it costs less energy AND you get more loot. High levels will run you through them just for the bonus. Downside is you must solo clear to the level you want to farm.
-When you evolve a monster's rank, they don't go back to level 1, the level cap just extends.
-Many monsters are not randomly found, but you find shards, and when you get enough you summon it.
-You can summon monsters drawing boobs or worse.
-If your energy and EXP are capped (I.E. you give EXP to a max level monster) a portion is banked to use later, which can be upgraded to better ratios, so you don't feel the need to set your alarm to every 8 hours quite so much or punished for farming with a max level monster.
Disadvantages:
-I ran out of ways to summon decent monsters and also good sources of energy around mid-20's as someone not paying past the 5 dollar entry fee.
-SSR's (The Nat 5's) are incredibly rare and incredibly powerful. I have not gotten one, and a single SSR on an enemy PVP team can be impossible to overcome through no particular fault in using the resources I got.
-Leveling is really slow, and not nearly as automated. I understand this is to offset not returning to level 1, but it just feels bad and getting new monsters up to snuff is almost impossible until your other monsters are either capped or you stop using them.
-Farming shards is as tedious as trying to get Mid essences from a dungeon, I.E. knowing it will happen eventually doesn't always mean the journey is fun.
All in all, if you only want to play it a few times a day when energy fills up, it's worth 5 dollars. Use your premium currency on the 10 currency promo pack, then look into exchanging friendship packages for the rest.
I own both the 4.99 steam version and the free mobile version. Definitely get it on mobile first to try it out. The only reason to buy the paid versions is if you want the extra stuff from the packs OR (and this is my reason) if you like to multitask and already have too many grindy mobile games on one device. I love that I can farm two different games at one time so I dont have to stay up hours and hours because I still have energy to use.
As for this version specifically, its never crashed on me and after I got it synced up, have had no issues connecting. The few features that dont work properly I rarely deal with since I mostly just farm in the background. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the convenience, although I understand where others don't want to pay for something thats free elsewhere.
Tips to play:
#1 grab ur wallet.
#2 take ur credit card out.
#3 P2W.
#4 P2W and still don't get the shiki you want.
#5 quit the game.
#6 REGRET.
***update: 3k usd spent and still have not unlock full ssr collection, I guess im just that unlucky. D:
***Edit 12/10/2018.
To keep you guys updated, now 6k usd spent and i do have full collections, every p2w cosmetic so far but missing few frames (the limited ones), tired of dueling because it is so easy to get top 20. grinding is now pretty pointless, months of grinding maybe only ONE good soul...
Now a casual player, find me in channel one sometimes :D
Why you should buy this game:
- You get an exclusive ingame frame.
Why you shouldn't buy this game:
- It's free for mobile.
- Several features simply don't work and the game will tell you to use a mobile device.
- You have a restriction how much you can play per day.
And here a little edit made necessary by yet another reason why humanity is doomed:
This is review was made while the game was in EARLY ACCESS...
As should've been obvious by the fat 'EARLY ACCESS' on top of this review before this edit.
Btw, game became pure pay2win trash later. eVeN tHoUgH iT's FrEe NoW1!
The PC port has some issues and also a feature that makes no sense but the game itself, as far as gacha games go, is definitely good and f2p friendly.
The purpose of this review is to examine the similarities and differences between the Steam version (which currently costs at least $4.99) and the Facebook Gameroom and Mobile versions (which are free). By doing so, I hope readers can make an educated decision on whether or not they should buy the Steam version. That being said, I will not be discussing the pros and cons of the game itself (if you′re looking for a traditional review of Onmyoji please read my in-depth review here).
What′s Included in the Steam Version?
Two packs are currently available, one for $4.99 and the other for $19.99. The $4.99 pack includes the Kitsune Frame, 53 S-Jades (the premium currency of Onmyoji), 100 Jades, and 1 Mystery Amulet. For anyone curious, purchasing 53 S-Jades in-game also costs $4.99. The $19.99 pack includes the Emerald Plume skin for Kagura, the Kitsune Frame, 225 S-Jades, 400 Jades, and 3 Mystery Amulets. Similarly, 225 S-Jades costs $19.99 in-game. Note that once Onmyoji leaves Early Access in 1-2 months it will be free!
Steam vs. Facebook Gameroom
As far as I can tell, these two versions are nearly identical. When comparing the graphics of both versions side-by-side, I am unable to perceive a noticeable difference. Both versions also appear to run similarly (as in using approximately the same amount of my computer′s resources). In addition, they possess the same advantages and disadvantages compared to the Mobile version (more on this in the Steam vs. Mobile section below).
So, what are the differences between the Steam and Facebook Gameroom versions? The obvious one is the different platforms. Using Steam has its benefits (ex. access to Friends list), and while I havn′t personally experienced many problems with Facebook Gameroom, many others have voiced persistent crashing issues with it. Another difference between the two versions is that players of the Steam version have more freedom when it comes to resizing the client. The same aspect ratio must be maintained for both versions, but the Facebook Gameroom version prevents players from reducing the size of the client below a certain point. This is not the case for the Steam version, which players can reduce to a minuscule size if they wish to do so.
On a side-note, players cannot run both of these versions at the same time. This means anyone looking to play two different accounts on the same PC are unable to do so.
Steam (and Facebook Gameroom) vs. Mobile
As stated in the section above, the Steam and Facebook Gameroom versions are incredibly similar; therefore, in this section, I will be comparing both PC versions to the Mobile version.
Aside from the obvious fact that the Mobile version is much more portable, the Mobile version actually has two in-game advantages. First, many events can only be completed on the Mobile version (attempting to do so on the PC versions will yield a message to try on the Mobile version instead). Second, players on the PC versions are limited to the number of times they can participate in each activity in Onmyoji per day (ex. a maximum of 50 Demon Seal clears per day). I recommend readers to look up these restrictions to judge whether or not they will have a major influence on gameplay for them.
While it′s true the Mobile version is more portable, players of the PC versions can enjoy the benefits that come with playing games on a computer such as a bigger screen, more refined graphics, and the ability to use their physical keyboards (as opposed to the digital one on Mobile). It′s also important to note that Onmyoji will drain a phone′s battery incredibly fast.
Verdict: Is the Steam Version Worth It?
I recommend anyone that has already played and enjoyed Onmyoji on either Facebook Gameroom or Mobile who also plans on buying S-Jades in-game to purchase the Steam version. As mentioned in the first section of this now very lengthy review, the two available packs include the number of S-Jades consumers would receive for the same price as their respective packs. For example, if someone planned to buy 225 S-Jades for $19.99 in-game, they might as well buy the $19.99 Steam version pack which not only includes 225 S-Jades, but also other goodies.
For those that have no intentions of buying S-Jades but wish to play on PC, I recommend downloading the free Facebook Gameroom version instead. And for the Mobile players that aren′t particularly interested in playing on PC, well, rest assured because the Steam version doesn′t offer in-game benefits (it does the opposite actually).
Adorable voice actings, soothing music and story telling.
Bright, colourful and beautiful anime artwork.
Sparkling, shiny and moving characters attracted my attention when game appeared in Steam Store.
Just personally not particularly interested in the MMO rat race on who spends more.
Game runs rather smoothly and fluid.
A small window, unable to resize,
occasional twitching on the spot for the spirit with the prompt above its head.
Could be a good game for those who enjoys grinds and spurge to compete.
A neutral recommendation.
Reason for purchase was just an investment for trading cards and backgrounds.
*Feb 2020
Returned 2 years later, noticed there are achievements and game is now 'free'.
No doubt a fun, interesting and addicting game,
too interesting and much to keep you ingame,
but Very time consuming and
Hard to join or keep up the ongoing rat-race.
Ignore the time played - I've played many hours of this game on Facebook Gameroom and Android prior to this review.
Yes, this is a mobile game port with microtransactions, and that in and of itself will drive some players away, but as a primarily free to play player myself in these sorts of games, I can say that it is actually fairly friendly to players who don't want to spend money.
Yes, there is a gacha system when summoning units, but a lot of Rare units are better than Super Rare units, and plenty of Super Rare units are better than Super Super Rares. It's interesting, but in my experience it has been easy for any player to make a well rounded team with whatever units they do get, even if their RNG isn't great.
It's also very easy to make progress and even get a bit of premium currency just by logging in daily and participating in events and quests.
But, really, what holds this game above other similar titles is a very unique (and in my opinion gorgeous) art style, a decent and entertaining story, and some phenomenal voice actors, particularly if you're a fan of anime.
If you are not a fan of mobile games, pass on this one on Steam and give the free version a try on your mobile device or Facebook Gameroom first - I think it might change some of your opinions of the genre, but to each their own. But, if you're already a fan of the mobile editions, then this port to Steam will be a welcome change of pace with better performance and some nice bonus skins. Also, for $5, you get some cosmetics and premium currency which is a nice little bonus! :)
This game is currently available for free on iOS, Android, and Facebook Gamesroom. The steam version is $4.99 and comes with a cosmetic portrait frame, 1 mystery amulet, and 100 jade. Not exactly a value in any way, so if you are interested in checking out the game I would try it out on a free platform first. The game works fine for mobile, Gamesroom tends to be pretty buggy.
EDIT: they added 53 S Jade (premium currency) to the purchase, so it sweetens the deal a bit.
- The steam version can be linked with your iOS or android copy of the game, so no need to start over.
- Compared to Gamesroom, you cannot "maximize" the window in the steam version but you can click and drag to increase/decrease the window size
- Upon game start in Steam the window size will default
If you're interested in an actual review of the game itself this game has been out a while in Asia and has a pretty large following. Its basically your run of the mill gacha game that involves collecting, leveling, and evolving monsters in the vein of other popular games such as Puzzles & Dragons, Fate Grand/Order, and Fire Emblem Heroes. If you love gacha games this is right up your alley. If you don't know what a gacha game is you should be able to tell within 15 minutes if this is your cup of tea.
