Designed and developed in cooperation with Uwe Eickert, the original designer of Conflict of Heroes, and Western Civlization Software, the award-winning computer wargame studio, no effort has been spared to bring the outstanding Conflict of Heroes gameplay to the computer. Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! includes an AI opponent as well as full multiplayer support with an integrated forum and game lobby. To remain true to the core gameplay of the board game, the PC version is designed to be fun, fast and easy to play, though hard to master. The game design is also historically accurate and teaches and rewards platoon and company-level combined arms tactics without overwhelming the player with rules.
The year is 1941. Germany has defeated Poland, Denmark, Norway, and France with ease. In the morning hours of June 22 over 3 million German soldiers attacked Soviet forces along a 1600 kilometer front heralding the beginning of Operation Barbarossa. Complete surprise was achieved and the Germans struck deep into Soviet territory. The Germans thought that the Soviets would fold like a house of cards. Their officer cadre had been massacred by Stalin, training was poor, and morale low. The Blitzkrieg catches the Soviets by surprise and they lose over 1.75 million men in the first two months alone.
The Germans are unstoppable, their Panzers pushing to the very gates of Moscow. But then winter hit and the cold drained the German’s resources, strength, and morale. The Soviets began striking back in the dead of winter and the momentum began to shift in their favor through the following spring. The bear had awoken!
Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! takes you to the Eastern Front of World War II during Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. This release includes a historical roster of infantry, artillery, mechanized and support units for the Axis and Soviet forces for the time frame of Operation Barbarossa.
Much effort went into distinguishing the units in the game by highlighting their historical strengths and weaknesses. For example, each tank defense rating takes into account relative armor thickness, armor slope deflection percentage, speed, size, targeting mechanics, and crew training. All these factors are represented in an easy to learn target number system.
Also included are all ten original Awakening the Bear! scenarios as well as eleven new Frontier scenarios, five new Commanding Heights scenarios and a very flexible “Partisan Road” Point Buy scenario. For those with a creative urge, Conflict of Heroes also comes with a scenario editor which allows players to create and share completely new scenarios using the Awakening the Bear! units.
The included scenarios, many of which you can play in about an hour, are designed to depict the pivotal points in a given battle. You can learn enough of the game to play the first scenario in ten minutes and a full set of in-game tutorials is included, as well as a full-color printed manual.
Features
- Added “Persistent AP” gameplay mode as the default option in which units retain their AP pools when player switches to activate a different unit. "Classic AP" option is similar to the original gameplay in that APs are not retained when a different unit is activated.
- Added “Fog of War” game option that conceals all units in hexes that are not visible to enemy units.
- Add a game option to play with unit quality variations (for example, Green, Experienced, etc.). Quality levels affect a variety of unit ratings.
- Added two new levels of bunker.
- Added a new “ruined building” terrain type.
- Added rules for point buy games (such as Partisan Road)
- Line of Sight calculations use a 3D technique -- ray casting on the map geometry -- instead of the rules in the book. This allows the computer game to have more complicated hills than in the board game.
- The computer game does not have weapon cards from the board game, and there are two Action Cards that we did not implement: “Move 2 Hexes” and “+1d6 CAPs.”
- Group Movement rules are somewhat different from the board game to accommodate and keep in balance the new Persistent AP game option.
- The computer game doesn’t use the card or counter limit from the computer game.
- And many more Firefights!

I enjoy playing turn-based wargames, but this particular one seems more like a very basic prototype than a fully developed game.
Conflict of Heroes - Storms of Steel randomly crashes during play with Windows 10 on my main laptop (i7 8th gen, 16 GB ram, 1TB hd), mainly - but not exclusively - when there are airplanes on the map. That's quite frustrating, since after reloading the last save or autosave, the game keeps crashing during the same impulse. I installed Windows 8 and CoH-SoS on a secondary laptop, and crashing behavior is the same as with Windows 10.
Although old, the game is fast and playable, but the crash issue kills any will to play it.
I searched the web for fixes, but could find none.
Old game and abandoned by the devs, but scratches the itch of tactical wargaming very well. Use the boardgame maps, 2d counter graphics and top-down view and it looks great especially with maitrebongo's mod from Matrix Games forum (also a lot of user-created scenarios there).
AI is not the best but better than LnL Tactical Digital, and the game flows better in my opinion.
No crashes or bugs on my Win7 64-bit, but haven't tried the allegedly bugged scenario with airplanes yet.
BLENDS REALITY
some bugs cause crashes from time to time, and the AI is really only good on defense. however, I enjoyed my time with it.
Very disappointing. it just doesnt hang together as a digital game. Looks great but the combat system is crap and so slow.
Absolutely terrible camera angle, even with the upgraded chits and maps downloaded from the Matrix Games forum. Who on earth created the view of the map in this game? It's awful.
You can't set the angle how you want, it has to be set to one of the fixed angles created by the devs, all of which are at too shallow an angle in isometric to see the detail of the units. Change the angle of the camera, and try zooming. What happens? It resets the camera to the default. I spent 10 minutes fighting this in the into scenario before giving up and asking for a refund.
I own the boardgame and it is amazing. This digital version could have been so much better had the camera been designed like every other game I've played for the last 20yrs. Apparently, the game has been abandoned by the devs, so there's little point expecting any kind of support.
Save your money, the other reviewers who mention the camera are correct.
great game
Bought this game, and its DLC, in the recent Slitherine sale (Feb 2019) because it reminded me of the Squad Leader boardgame.
Played several hours vs computer so far and here's my initial opinions:
- Graphics are functional, Audio is good ..... but turn off the incessant squad voiceovers.
- Gameplay is good and very much feels like a slightly simplified (eg. no leader counters) Squad Leader.
- Built in tutorials are OK and will teach you enough of the basics to start playing.
- UI is OK, though some bits like moving a unit into an enemy hex seem to require pixel perfect mouse skills.
- Computer AI is OK on fixed scenarios, I've won about 60% of battles on 'normal' difficulty.
- Unsure of computer AI on user generated scenarios - the two I generated I lost almost instantly.
- Not sure how random the dice rolls are, I turned on the 'visible dice roll' option and seem to be rolling an awful lot of 3 and 4s (on 2d6). Its not uncommon to be firing an LMG (4 sequential bursts using extra APs) and get a sequence of 3s and 4s.
Overall its an enjoyable game, and, personally, I consider I've got my moneys worth of fun already.
Updated - ok im giving this a thumbs up - I really do enjoy this game- sometimes controls are a bit clunky - but right now its the best ww2 turn based game out there.
---
here's why I'm rating it thumbs down. They dont tell you in each scenerio how to fn win it...just a generic story then you go at it - need to know how to win the scenerios as sometimes it ends saying russians win.
PLEASE fix
I wish I could do a neutral review.
Some background - I am a board game enthusiast and own (and love) Combat Commander which is a board game similar to this board game in many respects. Board game sessions can be hard to come by, so I have been waiting for this kind of a game to come along.
However, the problem lies in actually playing the game. The in-game tutorials are more annoying than helpful as you have to click through them and they can be misleading. For example, it took me several tries just to beat the first tutorial before I understood the card system. After that it was a snap. This should have been clear from move one.
The next tutorial movement highlights (or tries to) group tactics and bonuses. However, the tutorial leads you to believe that you can move everybody *at once*. What happens is that all the units can move before the opponent gets a turn. That makes sense but was not clarified effectively. I had to sit through at least 10 minutes of a YouTube video to understand the rules in this regard.
Any video game, strategy or otherwise, should be relatively intuitive when it comes to the user interface and mechanics. Alas, this game is not one of those. Thus, I find it fun and still play it but the game overall is a bit hard to recommend as a result.
I'll start by saying the Table-Top 'Conflict of Heroes' games are amazing I really enjoy playing them, they look fantastic, easy to learn and 'teach', they have become a favourite of mine.
The PC game is pretty good too,
It has a couple different small rule changes compared to the table top game - I kind of wish it was exactly like the table top - but it still plays well.
Select the 'chit' and 'Top down' view, turn off your FoW and you get pretty close to the Table top game.
You can't beat playing this game on the table top, I urge all to go out and find them and play them.. but the digital version scratches that itch when you don't have the time/room to set it up on the Table.
I really really hope they bring 'Guadalcanal' to the PC too!! PLEASE!!
I really like this game.
Conflict of Heroes is a REVOLUTION for the wargame board game hobby, and if you lack an opponent for a nice face to face sitdown, you can fire up this game and play a quick battle.
Small scenario will take you 15-20 minutes tops to get through, so it is perfect for I want to wargame, but not an idiotic kiddie modern wargame, but I don't have lots of time situation.
Longer scenarios can take an hour or two.
Make sure to turn off 3D models and switch to counters, and switch camera to top-down view and you've got a FANTASTIC tactical WW2 boardgame in your hands.
A sadly overlooked game on the PC, to the detriment of wargame enthousiasts.
A solid and workmanlike adaptation of one of the better WWII tactical squad level boardgames still available today.
At it's best when the graphics and rules are set to faithfully adapt the boardgame. Other graphics modes and rules variations water the game down into something much more average.
PBEM with an enthusiastic opponent would be a great way to play some of the larger scenarios for those without the time or space to set up the physical game.
faithful adaptation of the original board game
clunky user interface, lousy graphics, horrible map/camera controls.
the game itself is probably ok but the presentation just kills it.
massively overpriced at £20.
Best Music(classical)ive ever heard in a wargame!.Great Boardgame conversion also, the Counters have some of the sexiest Artwork ive seen to date.don't miss this franchise Folksies!...If i was a richman id gift this to all my Wargaming buds!,and trust me on the Music!-The game's even got it's own Wiki> http://cohwiki.slitherine.com/index.php/Main_Page
Edit, the controls are failrly cluncky maybe its just me but everytime i play i cant seem to get the right set up in the options,i like the chits instead of the graphicsmodels but its hard to see the chits overhead properly it feels like its at the wrong angle, this could be a really good wargame and it is but its interface is all wonky to me.Which leaves many scenarios left unplayed unfortunately.Youll see what i mean if you look at screenshot number 3 "The crossroads"and you cant see all the chits properly only the one your directly overhead,it just feels like its always at the wrong angle and you constantly try to adjust it but youc ant really.if this was done right id play this game like its meant to be played.
(Edit:) Since this review ive recently played this great game and its fixed its wonky UI and now the overhead Cam view is really nicely done, for a boardgame conversion they dont come much better done than this.
The computer version of CoH is a faithful representation of classic tactical level wargaming. Units are individual vehicles/ordnance and squads. Hexes are probably on the order of 30-50 yards, and maps represent the fields, forests, and villages of WW II. The action point system makes the game feel like a mix of real time and turn based, as players take turns back and forth many times moving units and playing actions within larger game turns (as opposed to one side moving/action while the other takes the occasional reaction fire shot, then repeat. Some scenarios can be played as quickly as 30 minutes, while others are quite intensive and could take several hours. The game supports computer opponent, online opponents, and PBEM...which seems like it would take an eternity to finish some games.
If you're a fan of tactical WWII board gaming, you should love CoH.
